John E. Staples Sr., 54
John E. Staples Sr., 54, Butlerville, died at 9:43 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Kings Daughters Memorial Hospital, Madison.
born Jan. 21, 1949, in Scottsburg, he was the son of John and Betty (Gabbard) Staples Lanham.
He married Rose Brixey Nov. 21, 1966, and she survives.
He owned Staples Pipe and Muffler Shop for 30 years, retiring in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his father and two half-brothers.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, John Staples Jr. of Scipio and Joe Staples of Butlerville; two daughters, Shirley Staples of Scipio and Anna Streaker of Cincinnati; a brother, Roy Staples of North Vernon; two sisters, Rosalie Harper of Columbus and Sara Speer of Butlerville; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral service is at 3 p.m. Sunday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home, North Vernon, with the Rev. Mitch Coggin officiating.
Visitation is from noon-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Mary C. Gasper, 95
Mary C. Gasper, 95, North Vernon, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at her home.
born Feb. 18, 1908 in Jennings County, she was the daughter of Frank and Lula (Hill) Walters.
She married Herbert W. Gasper Oct. 2, 1928 and he preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1998.
A homemaker and member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting and cooking.
She is survived by three daughters, Frances Richart of Seymour, Agnes Bloemer of North Vernon and Theresa Phares of Fountaintown; two sons, Bernard and Leo Gasper, both of North Vernon; 26 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Lawrence, Clarence and Albert Walters, a sister, Florence Lay, and two grandchildren.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anne's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ryan McCarthy officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Anne's Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today at Vance-Fisher-Sawyer Funeral Chapel with Rosary service at 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Anne's Cemetery endowment.
Ethel Lammerding, 95
Ethel Lammerding, 95, Greensburg, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital, Greensburg.
born Aug. 29, 1907 in Decatur County, she was the daughter of John and Mary Alexander.
She married Joseph Lammerding Jan. 26, 1929 in Greensburg and he preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1907.
She was a bookkeeper at Lammerding Plumbing and Heating for more than 30 years, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She is survived by a nephew, Charles Alexander of Shelbyville; a niece, Edna Fightmaster of Greensburg; a great-nephew; and two great-nieces.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Charles and Lewis Alexander, and two sisters, Mary Teiman of Lillie Goldschmidt.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service.
Memorials may be made to Decatur County Hospice or the American Heart Association.
Sister Ann Manderscheidt, OSF
Sister Ann Manderscheidt, OSF, 70, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at the Sisters of St. Francis Convent.
born July 7, 1932 in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Frank and Anna (Messinger) Manderscheidt.
She entered the convent Sept. 7, 1952, and made final vows Aug. 12, 1958.
She was a former teacher and librarian at eight Ohio schools and four Indiana schools, including St. Mary's, Aurora.
She served at Tender Mercies, Cincinnati, from 1985 to 1992 and was a bereavement counselor at Niehard Funeral Home, Cincinnati, in 1992.
She retired to the Motherhouse in 1997.
She is survived by two sisters, Fran Dooley of Cincinnati, and Betty Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Friday at the Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse Chapel.
Funeral services will immediately follow with the Rev. Raymar Middendorf officiating.
Burial is in St. Francis Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Convent.
Arrangements were by Weigel Funeral Home.
Lois Ruth Badgley, 90
Lois Ruth Badgley, 90, Greensburg, died at 4:49 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003 at Columbus Health & Rehabilitation Center.
born June 18, 1913 in Chickasha, Okla., she was the daughter of Arthur and Addy (Mabry) Hollis.
She married Paul Dee Badgley Feb. 25, 1935 in Chickasha, Okla., and he preceded her in death Nov. 11, 1969.
She was a musician, artist and enjoyed her farm life, and was Lois of Lois and the Guys, a well-known Greensburg music act.
Her first employment was playing the piano for silent movies at the Sugg Theater in Chickasha.
She and her husband owned a photography studio in Ohio, where she was the color artist.
The couple moved to Indiana in 1943 and owned and operated a dairy farm.
She later worked at Murphy's, Minear's and Newlon's shoes in Greensburg.
Last year, she received the Decatur County Senior Volunteer of the Year award.
A 1931 graduate of Anadarko High School, she was an active member at Rockcreek Baptist Church, where she was the pianist for more than 50 years.
She is survived by two sons, Ed Badgley of Letts and Bill Badgley of Greensburg; two daughters, Judy Nugent of Alert and Mabryan Hutchins of Columbus; a sister, Yvonne Hatch of San Antonio, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Jessie Slade, Elizabeth Henson and Audrey Fitz; and a brother, Royce Hollis.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Monday at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home, Westport, with the Revs. Steve Malone and Connie Barr officiating.
Burial will follow in Rockcreek Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
