William “Bill” Burman, 48, Greensburg, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at his residence in Greensburg. Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cook Funeral Home in Brookville. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Dewberry. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. services Friday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service, Southport Chapel in Indianapolis. Burial will follow in Concordia Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Mary Ruth Underhill, 71, Greensburg
Mary Ruth Underhill, 71, Greensburg, died at 5:03 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at her residence in Greensburg.
born Jan. 29, 1933 in Decatur County, she was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison and Myrtle Dell (Hankins) Ruble. She married Chester Underhill on Nov. 26, 1976. He survives.
She was a former employee of the Admiral Corporation in Shelbyville and was a member of the Rodney Wesleyan Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, James Allen Wright of Greensburg, Jeffrey Wayne Wright of Clifford and Joe Harrison Wright of Columbus; a brother, Orville Ruble of Napoleon; two sisters, Edith Means of Greenfield and Marritta White of Greensburg; fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, John Ruble, Sr., Leland Ruble and Delbert Ruble; three sisters, Elizabeth Smith, Unis Rose Ruble and Gladys Underhill.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. Funeral service is at 1 p.m. Friday at at the funeral home, with Rev. Michael Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Sandcreek Cemetery. .
Memorials may be made to the Decatur County Hospice.

Medna C. Hardwick, 54, Fairland, died at 1:20 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2004 at her residence.
born Nov. 14, 1949 in Clute, Texas, she was the daughter of Cyrus Hittle and Lou Anna Roberts. She married Ron Hardwick on April 10, 1976 and he survives.
An accounting clerk for Indiana Insurance Company in Indianapolis for seventeen years, she was a member of the Heather Hills Baptist Church in Indianapolis.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Daniel Hardwick of Hermosa Beach, Cal.; two step sons, Stephen Hardwick of Indianapolis and David Hardwick of Pleasant View; a daughter, Angie McCreary of Connersville; a step daughter, Angela Crafton of Greenfield; three brothers, Mike Hittle of Greensburg; Henry Hittle of Shelbyville and John Hittle of Indianapolis; a sister, Anita (George) Larrison of St. Paul and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville with Elder John H. Hanson officiating. Burial will follow in Fairland Cemetery in Fairland. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Shelby County or Gideons International.

Helen R. Spears, 73, Greensburg, died at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg.
born March 25, 1930 in Bellview, she was the daughter of Ernest Lively Priddy and Lucille Tempia Johnson. She married Malcom Spears on Sept. 3, 1968 in Decatur County and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1996.
A dietician at Decatur County Memorial Hospital, she retired in 1994.
She is survived by four sons, Lewis Yorn, Jr., William Yorn, Sr., James Russell Yorn and Kelly Spears, all of Greensburg; a step son, Dennis Spears of Greensburg; a daughter, Shirley Loper of Greensburg; two sisters, Shirley Lutes of Connersville and Janet Lemieux of California; twenty-four grandchildren and thirty-nine great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Robert Yorn; a brother, Ernest Lively Priddy, Jr. and a sister, Ernestine Revalle.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home with Mark Vice officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Emerson “Cleet” Bate, 83, Greenville
Emerson “Cleet” Bate, 83, Greenville, South Carolina, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina.
born April 6, 1920 in Forest County, Wisconsin, he was the son of Thomas Edward Bate and Mary Myrna Pitts Bate. The family moved shortly thereafter to the Greensburg area where he grew up. He married Eleanor Harrel Bate and she preceded him in death in 1983.
He served as an Army front-line medic in the South Pacific during WWII and was wounded at the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and received the Purple Heart. Following the war, he farmed in Ripley County for several years. In 1956, he yielded to God’s call to full time Christian service. After receiving ministerial training at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, he pastored several churches in Indiana and Upstate New York until his retirement in 1985.
He is survived by three sons, Thomas Bate of North Vernon, Michael Bate of Greenville, SC and Richard Bate of Lexington, KY; a brother, Odell Bate of Greensburg; a sister, Breta Bate Buer of Greensburg; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Charles and Oscar Bate and four sisters, Olive Bate Robbins, Vergie Bate Tressler, Jewell Bate Ramer and Gladys Bate Davis.
Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Morningside Baptist Church in Greenville, SC on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Sr. Sarah Page, O.S.F., 76, Oldenburg
Sr. Sarah Page, O.S.F., 76, Oldenburg, died Friday, March 5, 2004 at Sisters of St. Francis Convent Infirmary.
born Oct. 26, 1927 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Horace H. Page and Gertrude (Messer) Page.
A teacher, she taught at St. Joseph in Cincinnati, St. Aloysius in Bridgetown, Our Lady of Angels in St. Bernard and the Cincinnati Archdiocesan Office of Education (all in Ohio); Scecina High School, St. Mary and Marian College in Indianapolis and the Motherhouse in Oldenburg (all in Indiana); Archdiocesan School Office Director of Curriculum in St. Louis (all in Missouri); Salve Regina College in Newport, R.I. and Sacred Heart Retreat Center in Gallup, N.M. She entered the convent in Feb. 2, 1951 and made her final vows on Aug. 12, 1956. He retired to the Motherhouse in 2002.
She is survived by a cousin, Rita Messer Brooks of Glendale, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 1 until service time at 3 p.m. at the Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg with Fr. Raymar Middendorf, O.F.M., officiating. Burial will follow in Sisters of St. Francis Cemetery in Oldenburg. Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville is in charge of funeral arrangements.

James Russell Ryle, Sr., 97, Greensburg
James Russell Ryle, Sr., 97, Greensburg, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
born Sept. 9, 1906 in Decatur County, he was the son of Lucian and Effie Mae (Mathews) Ryle. He first married Audrey Louise Starks on Jan. 20, 1931 and she preceded him in death on April 17, 1973. He then married Ellen M. Covington on Aug. 30, 1975 and she survives.
A retired contractor, he was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Greensburg, a past president of the Home Builder’s Association and a former member of the Red Men’s Lodge.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, James R. (Letha) Ryle of Greensburg, Howard “Buddy” June Ryle of Greensburg and Dave (Patty) Ryle of Greensburg; two daughters, Sara (Dan) Smith of Sellersburg and Martha Ann (Jerry) Gerken of Ocala, FL; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara L. Evans; six brothers, Floyd, Connely, Paul, Bernard, Loren Ryle and an infant; four sisters, Bernice, Urba, Daisey and Ora.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg with Rev. Jim Newberry officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Decatur County Hospice.
