Olive Elnora Spiegel, 86, Greensburg
Olive Elnora Spiegel, 86, Greensburg, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at the Odd Fellows Nursing Home in Greensburg.
born Dec. 19, 1917 in Ripley County, she was the daughter of John P. and Lillian A. (Wiedeman) Weber. She married Wilfred Spiegel on Oct. 29, 1966 in Batesville and he preceded her in death on June 5, 1987.
She was retired from Decatur County Memorial Hospital and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greensburg.
She is survived by a brother, Norman Weber of Greensburg; a sister, Ethel George of Spiceland; a brother-in-law, James George of Spiceland; three sisters-in-law, Mary Weber, Evelyn Weber and Lois Weber, all of Greensburg; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Arthur and John (Jack) Weber and two sisters, Dorothy Powers and Nellie Grow.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Friday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg with Rev. Mark Flory officiating. Burial will follow in St. Louis Cemetery in Batesville. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Decatur County Hospice.
Landon Gage Straight
Landon Gage Straight died at 7:13 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital one hour after he was born
He was the son of Jessie James Straight and Leslie Sue (Dean) Schonfeld.
Besides his parents, he is survived by four grandparents, Edith Miller of Greensburg, James and Linda Dalziel of Warner Robins, GA and Craig Straight of Janesville, Wis.; three sisters, Whitney Garwood of Greensburg, Jessica Straight of Acworth, GA and Daisy Schonfeld of Greensburg; three brothers, Mason Garwood and Branson Schonfeld, both of Greensburg and Thayland Parks of Acworth, GA and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by a grandfather, John R. Dean
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Aerie Cemetery in Letts with Rev. David A. Scaggs officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Aerie Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been made by Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport.
Richard W. Glass, 66, Hazlehurst, Miss.
Richard W. Glass, 66, Hazlehurst, Miss., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.
Richard was born April 1, 1937, in Greensburg, the son of Arthur and Carrie Glass.
On Dec. 27, 1956, in Greensburg, he married Clara (Kohrman) Rathburn. She survives.
Richard was a retired maintenance worker. He served his country in the Marine Corps, with tours of duty in Japan and Vietnam.
He is also survived by sons Stephen W. (Rose) Glass, of Hazlehurst, Patrick A. (Terrie) Glass of Clinton, Miss., and Jeffrey T. Glass of Cathedral, Calif.; a brother, Charles (Kathryn) Glass of Wesson, Miss.; three grandchildren,
Carolyn, Zachary and Zoie; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no local visitation. Burial will be in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg.
Nellie Miller, 73, Greensburg
Nellie Miller, 73, Greensburg, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 at Kindred Hospital in Greenwood.
born March 8, 1930 in Lebanon, KY, she was the daughter of George T. Walston and Nellie H. Wright. She married Jules T. Miller on Aug. 5, 1955. He survives.
A retired James Rivers Corp. worker, she was a member of the Rushville Nazarene Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Thomas H. Miller of Manilla, Timothy H. Miller of Greensburg and Kerry L. Miller of Pekin, IL; a sister, Sally Wright Unsled of Lebanon, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael J. Miller.
Funeral service is at 1 p.m. Monday at Burns Funeral Home in Milroy with Rev. Michael Dees officiating. Burial will follow in East Brook Cemetery in Milroy. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Lenora Richards, 92, Greenfield
Lenora Richards, 92, Greenfield (formerly of Greensburg), died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 at Brandywine Nursing Home in Greenfield.
born May 11, 1911 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Jesse C. Tucker and Hazel Riser Tucker. She married Leslie L. Richards on Aug. 6, 1943. He preceded her in death.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Kingston Presbyterian Church, past president of the Decatur County Fair Board, Eastern Star, VFW Ladies Auxiliary 5584 and also various other organizations.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Doris) Long of Fairland; two sisters, Thelma Merry of Shelbyville and Irene Wilkinson of Falmouth; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Ed L. Richards; three sisters, Fern Capicci, Mary Taylor and Louise Theabold and two brothers, Charles Tucker and Paul Tucker.
Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Monday at Kingston Presbyterian Church in Kingston with Pastor David Crowley officiating. Burial will follow in Kingston Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-4 p.m. Sunday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Martha Lay Zinser, 83, Greensburg
Martha Lay Zinser, 83, Greensburg, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital after a long illness of kidney cancer. born Sept. 12, 1920 in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Russell and Mary (Gosch) Boger. She graduated from Waldron High School in 1938 and Indiana Business College in 1940. A homemaker, Martha worked in the Rosenmund School cafeteria, was a member of the First Baptist Church for 52 years, and was a volunteer at Decatur County Memorial Hospital for 20 years. She is survived by two sons, Maury (Marsha) Lay of Lake Santee and Bob (Betsy) Lay of Muncie; sisters Cecilia (Marvin) Boring of Fountaintown and Lois (Jim) Woolard of Shelbyville; brother, Lawrence (Louise) Boger of Russell Springs, Ky,; grandchildren Scott (Amy) Best and Monte (Lesley) Best, all of Westport, John Best of Hartsville, Erika Lay of Bethesda, Md., and Robert Lay of Muncie; great-grandchildren Taylor and Oakley Best of Westport; step-daughter Mary Ann (David) Scripture of Greensburg; step-grandchildren Tammy (Roger) McIntire of Waldron, Jamie (Lisa) Scripture) of Batesville, David Scripture of Greensburg; step-great-grandchildren Brandon and Blake McIntire and Dylan and Devin Scripture. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband of 42 years, Ernest Lay; her second husband of 17 years, Thomas Zinser; daughter, Beverly Best; grandson Joshua Best of Hartsville; a brother, Eugene Boger of Waldron; and a sister, Evelyn Jackson of Waldron. Visitation is today, 4-7 p.m., at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, Greensburg. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lewis Creek Baptist Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Decatur County or Greensburg Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.
Mark Kerr Hurst, 83
Mark Kerr Hurst, 83, Greensburg, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
born Feb. 10, 1921 in Fayette County, Ind., he was the son of Otto and Fern Kerr Hurst.
He married Dorothy Jean Jobe on Nov. 12, 1948 in Connersville. She survives.
He was a First Class Aviation Machinist Mate in the Navy during World War II having served from 1942 to 1946. He retired in 1986 after 40 years of service with Winship Tractor and Implement in Connersville and moved with the company to Rushville. He was a member of the Kingston Presbyterian Church in Kingston, Ind.
In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, boating and water skiing.
Aside from his wife, other survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah (Thomas) J. Wood of Lake Santee and Melissa (Richard) Shafer of Greensburg; a brother, Wayne Hurst, Connersville; four grandchildren, Marcy Houston of Orange, Ind., Ericka Huntsman of Connersville; Nicklaus Wood, currently serving in Kuwait with the U.S. Army, Cory Mark Powers, Mesa, Ariz.; five great grandchildren, Skylar Powers, Mesa, Ariz., Zac Moore and Shelby Houston, both of Orange, Ind., Tierra Huntsman and Harlee Huntsman, both of Connersville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, a granddaughter, Angela Boughner, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. services Monday at the Urban Winkler Funeral Home, the Rev. James Orr officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery.
