Michelle Elayn Knapp, 44, Arcadia
Michelle Elayn Knapp, 44, Arcadia, died at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville.
Born July 25, 1959 in Noblesville, she was the daughter of John A. and Sylvia Kay (Ehman) Hartley and they survive. She was a 1977 graduate of Hamilton Heights High School.
She married Gregory Allen Knapp on June 19, 1976 and he survives.
She was currently an office manager at Flightax, Inc. in Cicero. She had formerly worked at Ryland Mortgage Company and Northwest Mortgage Company in Indianapolis as office manager. She also assisted her family at Hartley Funeral Homes and Hartley Interiors & Antiques in Cicero and Arcadia.
She was a member of Cicero Christian Church, the John Street Girls, Husky Hoopsters and she was very active in assisting with athletics in Hamilton Heights schools. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.
Aside from her husband and her parents, she is also survived by three sons, Christopher Michael, Joseph Ryan and John Adam, all of Arcadia; two brothers Michael Jowayn Hartley (wife Robin) of Arcadia, Steven John (wife Dena) of Arcadia; father John A. and wife Melinda of Rushville; mother Sylvia Kay Hartley Morrow and husband Carroll of Cicero; step-brothers Ken Morrow of Indianapolis, Brett C. Morrow of Cicero; and step-sisters Mallory and Madelaine of Rushville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cicero Christian Church, with the Rev. Larry Wiseman and the Rev. Mark Knapp officiating. Burial will follow at Arcadia Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michelle Knapp Memorial Fund to be used for the Hamilton Heights boys and girls basketball programs, c/o Hartley Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 407, Cicero, IN 46034.
Howard H. Westerfeld, 85, Batesville
Howard H. Westerfeld, 85, Batesville, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at his residence.
Born June 18, 1919 in Batesville, he was the son of William and Elizabeth (Barg) Westerfeld. He married Stella Pat Goyert at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads on Nov. 29, 1941 and she survives.
A life-long farmer, he was an Army veteran of World War II and also a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads and of several different church organizations in the past.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, David (Janet) Westerfeld, Daniel Westerfeld and James (Melissa) Westerfeld, all of Batesville and Rick (Patti) Westerfeld of Greensburg; two brothers, Monroe Westerfeld of Batesville and William Westerfeld of Indianapolis; two sisters, Ethel Parmer of Columbus and Evelyn Parmer of Edinburgh; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Bauer and three brothers, Wilbur, Clarence and Raymond Westerfeld.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads with Pastors Robin Owen and Danny Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Margaret Mary Hospital Hospice.
Pleas Martin, 78, Greensburg
Pleas Martin, 78, Greensburg, died at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at his residence.
Born Dec. 8, 1925 in Clay County, Ky., he was the son of Leonard Martin and Lucy (Turner) Martin. He married Patricia (Howson) Martin on Jan. 4, 1974 in Greensburg and she survives.
A retired school teacher, he worked with many local schools in the area. He was also pastor with several Southern Baptist Churches and was very involved with buying and selling of real estate and even owned rental properties. He worked with Ohio Valley Opportunities where he worked with children as a job development and career awareness counselor. He was also a graduate of Clay County High School, Sue Bennett, Jr. College of London, Ky. and Union College of Barbourville with his B.S. and Masters.
Besides his wife, he is survives by two sons, David (Jan) Martin of Shelbyville and Tim (Debbie) Martin of McKee, Ky.; three daughters, Alice Faye Stainbrook of Shelbyville, Lucy Kempton of Highland Park, Ill. and Darlene Beauchamp of Big Clifty, Ky.; a step daughter, Connie Lindzy of Buckeye Lake, Ohio; five sisters, Naomi Mills of Hillsboro, Ohio, Mable Brumley and Doris Cottongim, both of Manchester, Ky.; Marie Whitehead of Greensburg and Evelyn Davidson of Lynchburg, Ohio; two brothers, Leonard Martin, Jr. of London, Ky. and Charlie Martin of Manchester, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; two step grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Thomas Martin and a sister, Olzie Bowling.
Funeral service is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg with Charlie Martin officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Decatur County Hospice.
Sue Ellen Rice, 47, Cleves, Ohio
Sue Ellen Rice, 47, Cleves, Ohio (formerly of Holton), died Friday, June 18, 2004 at her residence.
Born April 17, 1957, she was the daughter of Gerald and Carolyn Schlotman Williams.
A homemaker, she attended Holton Elementary School and was a 1975 graduate of South Ripley High School. She had worked in restaurant management for Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken and was a member of the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she is survived by three sons, Steven (Shannon) Rice of Versailles, David (Tracy) Rice of Osgood and Kyle Rice of Ft. Sill, Okla.; three grandchildren, Austin, McKenzie and Skyler Rice; paternal grandmother, Martha Williams of Osgood; maternal grandmother, Madge Schlotman of Holton; three brothers, Mark Williams of Edinburgh, Steve Williams of Atlanta and Andy Williams of Greensburg and two sisters, Beth Hewitt of Batesville and Lisa Granger of Greensburg.
Funeral service is at 2 p.m. today at Union Flat Rock Baptist Church near Osgood with Rev. Carolyn Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service today. Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Ms. Rice’s grandchildren in care of the funeral home.
Lois C. (Harcourt) Henderson, 89
Lois C. (Harcourt) Henderson, 89, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Rushville. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Burns Funeral Home in Milroy. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bob Land officiating. Final disposition will be in Old Milroy Cemetery.
Anson P. Hobbs, 89
Anson P. Hobbs, 89, died June 8, 2004, at University Village Health Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Anson was born March 4, 1915, in Greensburg.
He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1932. Upon graduation from Indiana University in 1936 he went to work for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Mich., as a Chemist. He worked for Dow for 35 years.
On May 30, 1937, he married Mildred M. Robinson in Indianapolis. She preceded him in death, 1986.
Anson was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Civitan Club and of the American Chemical Society. Throughout his life he was very active in Church and Lay Witness Mission work.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Anson P. Hobbs, II, in 1975.
Anson is survived by a son, David A. Hobbs of Sterling, Va., a daughter, Carol Callahan of Fairbanks, Alaska, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His body was donated to science. There was no memorial service or funeral.
Eileen Ann Kessens, 81, Batesville
Eileen Ann Kessens, 81, Batesville, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at her home on the farm.
Born Oct. 14, 1922 in Batesville, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Bertha (Gunter) Klostermeyer. She married Virgil Kessens at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads on April 12, 194. He survives.
She was a homemaker on her family farm and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Donna Harrelson of Greensburg; three sons, Gary (Cynthia) Kessens, Robert (Joyce) Kessens and Kenneth (Diane) Kessens, all of Batesville; a son-in-law, Robert Krieger of Batesville; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Krieger.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads with Pastor Gary Groth officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Margaret Mary Hospital Hospice or St. Paul Lutheran Church.
