Ethel M. Adams, 91, Batesville
Ethel M. Adams, 91, Batesville, died on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville.
Born Feb. 21, 1913 in Batesville, she was the daughter of Charles Green and Clara (Lehmkueler) Green. She married Sam Adams on June 15, 1959 in Kalamazoo, Mich. He preceded her in death.
Ethel wrote and published a music theory textbook which became a standard teaching aid in universities across the country and was also an avid Bridge player and was also a Professor of Music at Western Michigan University for 30 years before retiring in 1975. She was a member of the St. Mark’s Church in Batesville, the College Music Society, Music Educators National Conference, Music Teachers National Association and Sigma Alpha Iota. The title of the book she authored is “An Introduction to Musical Understanding and Musicianship.”
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Green of Batesville; a dear friend and care giver, Lillian Powell of Batesville; four nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews and nine great-great nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Tuesday funeral service at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mark’s Cemetery. Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s music program or the Sam and Ethel Adams Vocal Music Scholarship Fund.
Wanda F. Shaver, 60, Greensburg
Wanda F. Shaver, 60, Greensburg, died on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 at her residence in Greensburg.
There is no visitation or service.
Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Frances Grace Zinger, 84
Frances Grace Zinger, 84, of Batesville, died Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Visitation is Saturday, 2-3 p.m. followed by funeral services at 3:00 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville with cremation following the services.
Joan Friend, 75
Joan Friend, 75, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 in Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
Joan was born Sept. 17, 1929 in Summitville, the daughter of the late Walter and Dicia Mae (Goble) Bailey.
She was a homemaker and a member of the New Point Baptist Church.
She married Clarence L. Friend on Dec. 9, 1944.
He survives with sons Clarence (Joyce) Friend Jr., Albert Friend, Carroll Joe (Wilma) Friend, Robert Lee (Betty) Friend, Sr., Jerry Lee (Virginia) Friend, Sr., Kenneth Wayne (Audrey) Friend, Sr., Brian (Suzette) Friend, all of Greensburg, Richard Allen (Sherri) Friend of Hamilton, Ohio; a daughter: Donna Gooden, Columbus; a brother, Frank Bailey, St. Paul; three half-brothers, Levi Friend, John Friend, Holton, Ralph Friend, Greensburg; two half- sisters: Alberta Anderson, North Vernon, Rachel Bartley, South Carolina; 34 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, one grandchild, one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Wenning officiating. Burial will be in the South Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Decatur County Hospice.
Clarence Meadows
Clarence A. Meadows, 58, of Muncie, died Thursday, October 28, 2004 at Ball Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born in Greensburg, July 3, 1946, the son of the late William and Lucille (Spicer) Meadows. He graduated from Greensburg High School and the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne.
Clarence was retired from Delphi Automotive, and had more than 15 patents and technical papers with General Motors. He also taught electricity and robotics at Ivy Tech State College.
He was a member of Corinth United Methodist Church; the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and was a volunteer and worked many hours with the Cowan High School Band and Boy Scouts.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Mary (Kanney) Meadows, whom he married April 16, 1983; sons, Clarence William (Wendy) Meadows of Daleville, Trevor Andrew (Nicole) Mea-dows of Muncie, Kim Matthew Linton of Gaston and Patrick Michael Meadows of Muncie; his mother, Lucille Meadows and his brother Charles (Debbie) Meadows, all of Greensburg; sisters Velma (Maurice) Miller and Marita (John) Fasbinder, all of Batesville; grandchildren, Christine, John, Dillon, Zachary, Cassie, Abbie, and Seanna.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Parson Mortuary, 801 W. Adams Muncie. Burial will be in Tomlinson Cemetery.
Visitors may call an hour prior to the services at the mortuary.
Bernard M. Hull, 81
Bernard M. Hull, 81, of Greensburg died Monday, October 11, 2004 in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.
Bernard was born on Aug. 2, 1923, in Decatur County, the son of the late Ercie. M. and Susie E. (Brandeiwiede) Hull.
He was a 1941 graduate of Sand Creek High School, served in the Navy as a hospital corpsman during World War II and then graduated in 1949 from Indiana University and received his masters of public health degree from the University of Michigan.
On Aug. 25, 1946, he married Virginia E. Colvin. She survives.
Bernard was employed by state and local health departments in Indiana and Ohio and was an adjunct professor at The Ohio State University.
He retired from the Dept. of Health in 1977 and continued to work as a health planner for the Indiana Health Systems Agency until retiring to Greensburg in 1981. He served as president - and was a life member - of Ohio Environmental Health Association and was also a life member of the Ohio Public Health Association.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he had been an elder since 1983 and was a board member; was a member of the Greensburg Country Club, of the Masonic Lodge; of Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite; of the Goshen Jaycees; of Scottsburg Kiwanis; a life member of the VFW; had earned his Eagle Scout honor and was active in the Boy Scouts of America; was involved in Decatur County Lifelines Systems; and was a member of the Decatur County Housing Board.
He is also survived by his son, William M Hull of Cincinnati and by many cousins and nieces.
Visitation is today, 4-7 p.m. at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Services are Thursday, 2 p.m., at the funeral home, Rev. Dr. Lee C. Riggs officiating. Burial will be in South Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.
Charles G. Williams, Jr., 90
Charles G. Williams, Jr., 90, of New Point, died Saturday, October 9, 2004 in Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville.
Charles was born on April 1, 1914, in New Pennington, the son of the late Charles, Sr., and Letta (Collicutt) Williams.
He was a 1932 graduate of New Point High School. He married Mary Olive Minning on Sept. 28, 1936. She died on April 4, 2004.
Charles was a lifelong farmer. He also retired from Highway Equipment Co. as a a Caterpillar dealer in Cincinnati.
He was a member of the New Point Christian Church.
He is survived by his daughter Shirley (Bobby) Maines of Durham, N.C., and a son, Gordon (Carol) Wil-liams of London, Ohio, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by a son, Charles V. Williams, and by two brothers, Andrew and John Williams.
Visitation is Friday, 5-8 p.m. at the Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, and for a half-hour until Saturday’s 10 a.m. services at New Point Christian Church, Pastor Mark Vice officiating. Burial will be in Rossburg Cemetery, New Point.
Memorials may be made to the church’s building fund.

Robert W. Cruser, Jr., 67, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 in his Westport residence.
Visitation is Saturday, 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. services in Bass & Gasper Funeral Home, Westport.
