Adron "Dee" Stapp
Adron "Dee" Stapp, 83 of Edinburgh died Monday July 9, 2012 at 11:07 p.m. at his home.
Mr. Stapp served as a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army stationed in Ft. Eustis, VA.
He retired from Burnsides Concrete Company in 1979 and served as town marshal of Hope from 1979 to 1990.
Mr. Stapp was a member of the Hope American Legion and also received the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel.
Funeral will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Pastor Dennis Aud officiating.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday.
Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery in Hope with full military graveside rites.
Memorial contributions may be made to Edinburgh Fire Dept.
Mr. Stapp was born in Russell County, KY. on March 25, 1929.
The son of Lawrence and Willie Pearl Kearns Stapp, he married Charlene Saylor, Sept. 10, 1954 in Hope and she survives.
Other survivors include; daughters, Anita (David) Frazee of Hope, Bonnie Lawson of Edinburgh, Dee Ann (Carl) Hitchcock of Hartsville, and Janie Bailey of Edinburgh and a sister Mary White of North Vernon. He has twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Aldon and Eldon Stapp, sisters Pauline Chapman and Alene Watkins; a granddaughter, Amber Frazee and a great grandson Kiegan Frazee.
Hal Doy Sampson
Hal Doy Sampson, 71 of Mt. Washington, Ky, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2012 at his home. Born May 23, 1941 in Shelby County, Indiana, he was the son of the late O. Carl and Velma L. (Patterson) Sampson. On January 27, 1979, he married Davia Judith "Judy" Sampson in Louisville and she survives. Other survivors include a son, Val Drew Sampson; a granddaughter, Ashleigh Byrd; brothers, Tony Sampson (Jim Turner) of Provincetown, MA, Rudy (Christina) Sampson of Plymouth, MA; first wife and close friend, Nancy (Gellert) Upton; aunts, Elsie Hines, Freeda Sampson and Effie Wasson; several nieces, cousins and countless high school and college friends. Hal Doy was a lifelong member of the Geneva United Methodist Church and he attended Mt. Washington Baptist Church. He was a 1959 graduate of Southwestern High School and a 1965 graduate of Franklin College. In 1995 he was inducted into the Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame. His funeral will be Thursday Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope, IN with Rev. Marvin Arnett officiating. Calling will be Thursday from 4 - 7 pm at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the service. Hal Doy retired from teaching after a career expanding over 30 years. He coached basketball, football and track and field at Westport, Waggener and Jeffersontown high schools in Kentucky. He enjoyed telling stories of his life experiences and he met with former classmates once a month for reminiscing. Hal Doy was an avid collector of cowboy and western memorabilia. His knowledge of movies and their stars was extraordinary. He rode horses all his life, was a trainer and competed for years on the rodeo circuit. Hal Doy lived hid life to the fullest. He was loved by all and will sadly be missed.
Donald W. Burton
Donald W. Burton, 66, of Hope, died Monday, August 13, 2012, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Mr. Burton was retired from FAB Trucking and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Navy. He attended St. Louis Crossing Baptist Church, was a member of Hope Masonic Lodge, love racing, NASCAR and football.
Visitation for Donald will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope. A memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. Cremation is planned and a private military graveside service will be held at a later date at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bartholomew County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Donald was born on June 29, 1946, in Edinburgh, the son of Donald William, and his maternal mother, Imogene Lee Ferrell Burton. He was raised by his mother, Mary Kroft of Hope. He married Sandra Kay Lacefield and she preceded him in death on June 12, 2004.
Other survivors include a son, Kevin Burton (Jackie Stark) of Columbus; a granddaughter, Jasmine Molitor (Kiel) of Edinburgh; brothers, Michael Burton (Julie) of Columbus and Jarrod Burton of Charleston, South Carolina; a sister, Andrea Barrett (Kevin) of Bargersville and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in -law, Keith and Ginger Burton; a daughter, Donna Burton; a granddaughter, Erika Burton; and a brother, Jimmy Allen Burton.
James M. Andrews
James M. Andrews, 69 of Columbus died Thursday Oct 4, 2012 at Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Mr. Andrews was born March 11, 1943 to Gladys M. Robertson and James F. Andrews in St Louis Crossing. and attended Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School. Following early graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany and one of his most memorable assignments was being stationed along the East-West border as the Berlin Wall was being constructed, observing activites and reporting back to U.S. intelligence.
After being honorably discharged, Mr. Andrews worked briefly at the former Regal Paper plant in Edinburg and then entered the hospitality industry. He worked at the Chanteclair in Indianapolis, owned and operated Jim"s Yellow Turkey in Columbus and later served as manager of the BPOE 521 Elk's Lodge. After retiring from hospitality, he joined Arvin in Process Improvement and retired from there in 2007.
Mr. Andrews was preceded in death by his wife Donna Ellsworth Frazee Andrews, his parents and a grandchild Joey Rose.
He is survived by his brother Timothy M. Andrews of Princeton, N.J., his daughter Vici Frazee Bushey of Greenville, S.C., his son Richard Andrews of Avon, his daughter Jamee Andrews Rose Wyan of Pendleton, S.C. and his daughter Rachael Andrews Bannister of Columbus; grandchildren Jessica Andrews Vance of Williamston, S.C., Samantha Andrews of Greenville, S.C. Jordain Rose of Millersport, OH. Matthew Andrews of Greenville, S.C., Kevin Wyan of KY, Ashley Wyan of Pendleton. S.C., and Travis Wyan of Pendleton, S.C. and great grandchildren Carter, Hannah, Ella, Kylee, Jacey and Hazel.
He requested no services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the Hope Food Bank Endowment Fund. He will be forever with his beloved Donna at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
Laura L VanGorden
Laura L. VanGorden, 92 of Flat Rock died Monday Dec. 12, 2011 at Franklin United Methodist Home. Mrs. VanGorden was a member of the Flat Rock United Methodist Church. She love cooking and gardening. She retired as a school cook The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2: 00 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with the Rev. Leslie Fix officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be at Norristown Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Norristown Cemetery thru the funeral home. Mrs. VanGorden was born Nov. 20, 1919 in Brunswick, In. She was the daughter of James Tilman and Lu Graham. She married Henry Dustin Van Gorden in 1947 and he preceded her in death in 2006. Mrs. VanGorden is survived by a son Jim (Diane) VanGorden of Flat Rock. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter Mary Jane VanGorden; a sister Geraldine Seward and brothers Thomas and Jack Graham.
William "Will" Andrew Thomas Torrance
William "Will" Andrew Thomas Torrance, 18 of Bargersville passed away Friday February 17, 2012 in Vincennes, IN. He was a full time student at Vincennes University where he was majoring in welding. He graduated from Center Grove High School in 2011. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Firecrafter Assoc. He was a member of the William G. Morgan Chapter of DeMolay and a lifetime member of the Indiana Railroad Museum. He worked at the Ransburg Reservation Boy Scout Camp in the summer. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 am at Norman Funeral Home in Hope . Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 - 8 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery. . Born April 3, 1993 in Franklin, IN, Will was the son of Dennis H. and Linda L. Reed Torrance. Survivors include, his parents of Bargersville; brothers, Stephen H. and Ira S. Torrance both of Bargersville; sisters, Saralyn A. and Lauren A. Torrance both of Bargersville and a nephew, Logan Torrance of Bargersville. Will was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Velma Reed and William and Virginia Torrance.
Terry Michael McCarty
Terry Michael McCarty, 60 of Franklin, passed away Saturday January 21, 2012 at Methodist Hospital. He was employed in construction. He loved canoeing, fishing and golfing. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Norman Funeral Home in Hope. The calling will be on Wednesday from noon until service time. Burial will be at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery west of Clifford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to Mr. McCarty's funeral expenses through the funeral home. Born June 17, 1951 in Shelbyville, Mr. McCarty was the son of Alfred and Dorothy Johnson McCarty. Survivors include his children, Eva McCarty of Columbus, Mike (Sarah) McCarty II of Columbus and Greg (Christine) Carey of Greenwood; his wife, Jo Ann; his mother, Dorothy McCarty of Columbus; grandchildren, Christopher Moon of Columbus, Steven Penrose of Columbus, Bethany McCarty of Columbus, Haley McCarty of Columbus, and Alex Carey of Greenwood and siblings, Dotty (Jerry) Hill of Columbus, Rosy Moss of Hope, Carolyn (Darrel) Burbridge of Hope and Randy (Barb) McCarty of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his father; brothers, Larry and Jerry McCarty and sisters, Sharon Rea and Sherry Coffman.
John T. Humphrey
John Thomas Humphrey, 23, of Flat Rock died Thursday Jan. 19, 2012 near Flat Rock. John had been a premise technician for A T & T. He was a member of Flat Rock United Methodist Church and he liked baseball, basketball, football, golf, video games and spending time with his family on Memorial Day weekend and at Destin, FL. He was a 2007 graduate of Southwestern High School. The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Rev. Leslie Fix officiating. Calling will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Flat Rock Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the John T. Humphrey memorial fund thru the funeral home Born in Indianapolis June 23, 1988, John was the son of Scott Brown and Kristy Harrod Green. He married Alissa Mays on Nov. 25, 2011 and she survives. Survivors include his wife, his mother of Hope, brothers Owen Rush Green of Hope, Jeffery Green of Flat Rock, Justin Green of Shelbyville and Joseph Green of Chicago; nephew David Green of Chicago and grandparents Jenny Thompson of Shelbyville and John and Penny Harrod of Flat Rock. John was preceded in death by his father Scott Brown and step\ father David Green.
Maggie Murray
Maggie Murray, 92 of Columbus died Saturday Jan. 14, 2012 at Four Seasons Health Care Center. She was a member of Hartsville Order of Eastern Star, Columbus Moose Lodge and Newbern United Methodist Church. She loved to do ceramics and quilting. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Norman Funeral in Hope with Rev. Dan Bragg officiating. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. with an Eastern Star memorial service at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Foundation. Born Sept. 21, 1919 in Bartholomew County, Mrs. Murray was the daughter of James Edward and Bertha Cohee. She married Herschel U. Murray on April 6, 1944. He preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1987. Survivors include; sons, Donald E. (Louise) Murray of Newbern, Herschel E Murray and James F. (Sheri) Murray both of Columbus; grandchildren, Cindy (Ang) Harris of Greenwood and Scott ( Cassie) Murray of Columbus; great grandchildren Steve Harris of Columbus, Kristin Albertson of Martinsville and Alyssa Murray of Columbus and eleven great great grandchildren. Mrs. Murray was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Charles and Clarence Cohee and sisters Gladys Perdue, Lucille Henderson and Ethel Byrd.
Elizabeth Ann Thayer Land
Elizabeth Ann Thayer Land, 83 of Hope passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Ann was born January 1, 1929 in Bartholomew County. She was the daughter of John and Winona Pugh Thayer. She lived on her family farmland her entire life. She enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker. In her earlier years, Ann was employed as a Registered Medical Librarian at Bartholomew County Hospital where she met her husband, Paul Land who was also employed at the hospital for 40 years. They were married July 3, 1949 at St. Louis Crossing United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on February 23, 2004. Ann loved her church, the Chapel of The Good Shepherd and actively participated. She was also a member of Global Harvesters Missionary Organization and the Joseph Hart Chapter of DAR. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 am at the Chapel of The Good Shepherd with Rev. Bill Tennyson officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 - 8 at Norman Funeral Home and from 10:00 until service time at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be donated to the Chapel of The Good Shepherd or Gideons International Bibles. Survivors include; children, Paulette (Ron) Munn of Hope and Barbara (Buzz) Hjelter of Columbus; grandchildren, Christopher (Monica) Munn of China, Timothy (Mandy) Munn of Columbus and Mary Elizabeth Hjelter of Columbus; great grandsons, Isaiah, Owen, and Brayden Munn; a great granddaughter, Evelyn Munn; sisters, Joan Turney of Columbus, Jane (Glen) Keller of Columbus and Bonnie (Tom) Bradley of Noblesville. Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Katheen Stuart and brothers Don and Jim Thayer.

Cremation is planned Survivors include her husband Albert Unsworth; sons Timothy Ray and Joshua Chadwick Grow both of Edinburgh; two grandchildren; siblings Meredith Gabbard, Karen Sneed and Candace Campbell all of Edinburgh, Pete Gabbard of Columbus and Lois Wade of Westport. Joan was preceded in death by her son Christopher Gabbard.

Zenis E. "Bob" Vest Sr., 81 of Hope died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was retired from Knauff Fiberglass in Shelbyville. He was a member of Hope House Of Prayer in Hope. He served in the U.S. Army. He loved gardening. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 pm at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Paster Rick Leonard officiating. The visitation will be Sunday from 4 - 8 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at Flat Rock Cemetery in Flat Rock, IN with military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be donated to Mr. Vest's funeral expenses. Born September 7, 1930 in Pekin, IN, Mr. Vest was the son of Roscoe Vest and Estelle Stuart Llewellyn. He married Carrol Wade October 14, 1952 and she survives. Other survivors include; children, Diana S. Miller of Hope, Zenis E. Vest Jr. of Hope and Sherry E.(Rickey) Leonard of Greensburg; grand children, Amy Leonard of Columbus, Shannon Pittman of Columbus, Christina "Ralph" Humphress of Columbus, Jeromy Leonard of Hope, Misty Miller of Hope and Emily and Debra Vest of Columbus and twelve great grandchildren. Mr. Vest was preceded in death by his parents, a step-father, Everette Llewellyn, granddaughter, Jamie Leonard Gibson, sisters, Francis Ooley, Marlene Cheatom, Laverne Napier; a son in law, Russell Miller; a grandson and a granddaughter.
