born March 17, 1925 in Madison, Indiana, he was the third child of Henry A. and Mildred Kathryn (Kalb) Heitz who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Norbert, Richard and Wilbur Henry “Wib” Heitz.
Bernie graduated from North Madison High School in 1943. From meager means, as a young man he pursued his dream to fly. He was accepted into the Army Air Corps and entered the prestigious Cadet program during WWII. Only the best cadets were selected to fly the fighters. Bernard made the cut and was allowed to pilot both the P-38 and P-51. When the war ended, he worked for a short time at the Jefferson County Proving Ground while achieving his bachelor’s degree at Hanover College. Unable to stay away from aviation, he joined TWA as a commercial pilot for several years. Then meeting his life love, Norma Dean Holt, in Madison, he gave it up to move back to Madison and begin his long successful career as a father and an entrepreneur.
Holding to his depression era work ethic and extraordinary motivation, Bernie held multiple jobs and ran his own businesses throughout his life. He worked as a circulation manager for the Indianapolis Star newspaper while on weekends flying military aircraft for the Kentucky Air National Guard. He was known to buzz his house in an F-86 jet fighter which meant "Norma, pick me up at the Jefferson Proving Ground airfield." Later, he founded Heitz Sign Company and Heitz Car Wash which are now owned and operated by his sons, Patrick and John. He also was the first corporate pilot for Grote Manufacturing. He served on the Madison Air Board for decades and was instrumental in building the airport and later improving infrastructure including the runway extension. He flew his prized Piper Comanche, 6050POPPA, throughout the US and to Mexico for many years. Never idle, in his retirement he made aviation art which he sold internationally.
Bernard and Norma loved travel and adventure. They traversed the world from the Grand Canyon to the Great Wall of China, to the Pyramids and the Amazon, much of Europe, and Australia, New Zealand, and then always back to his beloved Madison. He loved small-time gambling, always playing the odds, but still his favorite game was penny rummy with Norma nearly every evening. Living life to its fullest, he left it with no regrets. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Past President of the Madison Rotary Club and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He also enjoyed arranging the Cincinnati Reds baseball trip for the Rotary club. He was also a member of the Madison Elks Club #524, Moose Lodge #765, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree and the American Legion Post #9.
