Irvin Rumple
Henry Irvin Rumple, 78, of Dolan, Indiana, passed away Thursday, January 20th, at his home from complications of a brain tumor. He was born November 15th, 1926, in Monroe County, the third child of Henry and Ruby (Godsey) Rumple. He grew up near Stinesville. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and was sent to DePauw University and Purdue University as part of the V12 program. In February, 1956, he married Marjorie Howland of Santa Monica, California, and they had two sons. He and his brother Ken formed Rumple Brothers Construction in the 1950’s and built many homes and apartment buildings around Bloomington. He continued to manage College Mall Apartments and Arlington Valley Mobile Park until they were sold several years ago. On August 7th, 1989, he married Gaye Scudder, a native of Switzerland County. They enjoyed 15 years of travel and retirement together. He is survived by his wife, Gaye; his son Eric and wife Charron of Salt Lake City, Utah; his son Brent and wife Mariete of Indianapolis; four grandsons; much family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Winfred Rumple and Kenneth Rumple; and his sisters, Marian Hammerman and Jewel Paddack. Memorial services were held Sunday, January 23rd, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Bloomington or to the Stinesville Scholarship Fund in care of the Monroe County Foundation.
Samuel S. Schwartz
Samuel S. Schwartz, 81, of Scotts Ridge, near Pleasant, passed away Sunday, January 23rd, at his home following an extended illness due to Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born October 27th, 1923, in Berne, Indiana, the son of Sam J. and Elizabeth (Schwartz) Schwartz. He was raised in Berne. On November 15th, 1942, he was united in marriage in Berne, to Elizabeth J. Wickey. This union was blessed with seven sons and one daughter. The family moved to Bowling Green, Missouri in 1948. He resided there until 1978 when he moved to Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pennsylvania. In 1988, he moved to the Canaan-Pleasant community, residing there until his death. He was a wheelwright and blacksmith by trade. He repaired buggies all of his life. He enjoyed working as a carpenter and farming. He was a member of the Old Order Amish. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth J. Wickey Schwartz of hear Pleasant; his sons, Jerry Schwartz and wife Marie of Bowling Green, Missouri, Jake N. Schwartz and wife Elizbeth of Canaan, Amos Schwartz and wife Rhoda of Salem, Missouri, Samuel Schwartz and wife Lida of Hastand, Kentucky, David Schwartz and wife Susie of Ohio; his daughter, Melinda Yoder and husband Chris of Bowling Green, Missouri; his brothers, Jake Schwartz of Bennington, Joe Schwartz of Angoila, Indiana, and Noah Schwartz of Bowling Green, Missouri; his sisters, Lizzie Borntreger and Anna Borntreger, both of Bowling Green, Missouri, Barbara Yoder of Glasgow, Kentucky, Verena Schwartz and Carlina Schwartz, both of Bowling Green, Missouri; 50 grandchildren; 101 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his children, Daniel Schwartz and a stillborn infant; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, John Schwartz; and his sisters, Mary Hilty and Katie Eicher. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. today (Thursday) by Bishop Jerry Wickey at the Jake N. Schwartz residence, 7958 N. Scotts Ridge Road, Canaan, near Pleasant. Burial will be in the Old Order Amish Cemetery in Pleasant. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home of Vevay is in charge of arrangements.
William ‘Bill’ Lay
William Alton “Bill” Lay, age 75, of Versailles, Indiana, formerly of Patriot, passed away with his loving family by his side at 5:10 a.m. on Sunday, November 25th, 2018, at his residence.
Bill entered this life on May 23rd, 1943, in Liberty, Kentucky. He was the loving son of the late Thornton Bantam and Bessie L. (Buck) Lay. Bill was raised in Aurora, Indiana, where he attended school.
Bill was united in marriage to the love of his life, Betty Sue Crawford on July 25th, 1964, in Aurora, Indiana. This happy union was blessed with a son, Richard and a daughter, Renda. Bill and Betty shared over 54 years of marriage together until his death.
Bill was employed as a machine operator for Campbell Hausfield in Harrison, Ohio, from 1973-1978. He was a former fork lift driver and machinist for General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1979-1993. He was later employed as a custodian for Garnett and Scott in Carrollton, Kentucky, for a few years.
Bill resided in Patriot for 32 years; Rexville, Indiana for 10 years; and in Versailles for five years. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church in Bennington. Bill enjoyed fishing, watching old western movies and spending time with his kids and grandkids.
Bill will be missed by his loving wife of over 54 years: Betty Sue (Crawford) Lay of Versailles; his son Richard “Rich” Lay and his wife Debbie of East Enterprise; his daughter Renda Mills and her husband John of Quercus Grove; his grandchildren: Rebekah Leppert and her husband Chris, James Williams and his wife Heather, Anthony Williams and his wife Ashley, Chelsea Reagan and her husband Justin, Brook Zarse and her husband Brock, Richard Lay, Jr., Lily Mae Williams, Sierra Mills, Daisha Lay, Shelbie Lay and Collin Lay; his great-grandchildren: Eden Grace Leppert, Everest Saige Leppert, Eylah Sue Leppert, Jackson James Williams, Emma Kay Williams, Aria Lynn Williams, Kyler Lawrence Reagan, Daisy Brook Zarse and Kambrie Elyse Lay; his brothers: Carl Lay of East Enterprise and Chester Lay and his wife Mary of East Enterprise; his sisters: Linda Cann of East Enterprise, Carolyn Wright and her husband Terry of Milan, Indiana, and Connie Sigmon of East Enterprise; his sister-in-law: Henrietta Lay of Osgood, Indiana; and his several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Thornton Bantam and Bessie L. (Buck) Lay; by his sister: Lilly Mae Lay; by his brothers: Stanley Lay and Jesse Lay; by his half-brother: Raymond Lay; his half-sister: Datha Carman; and his brothers-in-law: John Cann and Fritz Sigmon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st, 2018, by Brother Hobert Byrd at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, Indiana 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery.
Friends may call 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st, at the funeral home.

Shirley Slack
Shirley Slack, 77, of Rising Sun, passed away on November 19th, 2018, at The Waters of Rising Sun Nursing Home.
Shirley entered this world on May 25th, 1941 at the Milan Hospital in Milan, Indiana, the first-born of five children that her parents, Marjorie (Whitham) Bovard and Charles Hilbert Bovard were blessed with. She grew up on a farm in Aberdeen, Indiana where she shared duties with her four brothers in helping with the farm work.
She attended elementary school at the Cass-Union School, graduating from there in 1955. She then attended high school in Rising Sun and graduated from there in 1959. While in high school, Shirley decided that she wanted to become a teacher at the elementary level. In pursuit of her BS degree in education, she entered college in the fall of 1959, at the Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois and graduated from there in July 1963.
Soon after, she obtained employment by the Rising Sun Ohio County School Corporation to be a second grade teacher in the Elementary School for the 1963-64 school year.
In December of 1963, she was united in marriage to Raymond Slack. She continued her teaching, and on September 19th, 1968, she and Raymond were blessed with their son, Brian.
After a hiatus to care for him, she returned to teaching for 27 years. Then, in October of 1990, tragedy struck her life as a result of an automobile accident. The injuries she received ultimately render her to be totally disabled. After a lengthy stay in the hospital, she was cared for in her home for the next 17 years. As her health deteriorated further and In-Home Care was no longer possible, she entered the Waters of Rising Sun Nursing Home in February of 2008. She was a resident there until her death.
Shirley is survived by her husband of nearly 55 years, Raymond; by her son, Brian and her daughter-in-law, Shannon and three grandchildren: Anthony, Lilian and Paul. She is also survived by her four brothers: Gale, Gary, Rodger and Timothy Bovard; her cousins, Bill and Jerry Bovard; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 2003 and her father in 2007.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday, November 26th at Markland Funeral in Rising Sun, with Pastor Darwin Pressler officiating. Visitation was held on Sunday, November 25th, at the funeral home. Burial was in Rising Sun New Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to The Waters of Rising Sun Activity Fund. Cards are available at the funeral home.
Darlene Scudder
Darlene Angela Scudder, age 69, of Vevay, passed away at 4:12 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27th, 2018, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.
Darlene entered this life on October 4th, 1949, in Vevay, the daughter of the late Julian and Emma (Beutel) Scudder. She was raised in Vevay, and was a 1967 graduate of the Vevay High School.
Darlene was employed as a shuttle bus driver for Grand Victoria Casino in Rising Sun for 12 years; and for Plastic Moldings Factory in East Enterprise for several years. She was also employed for the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay for nine years; and for the Madison Shoe Factory for five years.
She was a member of the Riverview Southern Baptist Church and enjoyed reading James Patterson books, watching the Colts and The Waltons on television.
Darlene will be missed by her daughters: JoKay Beatty and her husband Mike of Florence and Amy Teeter and her husband Rob of Somerset, Kentucky; by her son, Freddie Sullivan and his companion: Misty of Vevay; by her companion, Kenny Springer of Vevay; by her grandchildren: Devin Sullivan, Nigil Sullivan, Brackston Sullivan, Brystol Teeter and Bentley Teeter; and by her nephew, David Anthony Schurman of Bright, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julian and Emma (Beutel) Scudder; by her sister, Nancy Schurman; and by her brother, Freddie Eugene Scudder.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 4th, at 1 p.m., by Pastor Loren Lamson at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery.
Friends may call on the family on Tuesday, December 4th, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Mary Alice Scudder
Mary Alice (Knox) Scudder, age 102, of Vevay, went to her heavenly reward on Sunday, November 25th, 2018.
Mary Alice was born on August 20th, 1916, in Carrollton, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Melvin and Ollie B. (Sutherland) Knox. At the age of five, Mary Alice and her family moved to Switzerland County, where she attended Vevay High School.
On February 8th, 1935, she was united in marriage to Wilford Delmar Scudder, and they shared 48 years together until Delmar’s passing on March 13th, 1983. Delmar and Mary Alice were blessed with one daughter, Margaret Ann.
Mary Alice worked at the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay, Lloyd Farrar’s Cloverleaf Store in Vevay, and at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, Indiana. Mary Alice was fond of saying “I’d rather wear out than rust out.” In addition, Mary Alice helped Delmar raise hay and tobacco and milk cows.
She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, quilting, cooking, baking and gardening. She took great pride in keeping a clean house to the point where Delmar would often remark “She hunts for dirt!” Mary Alice was very generous with her family, friends and neighbors and always shared what she had, be it extra vegetables from the garden or a meal on the table. She babysat her granddaughter, Sherry, and was an especially strong influence in her life.
Mary Alice was a staunch Democrat and supported the party whenever possible. However, above all else, Mary Alice was a devout Christian and faithfully attended the Vevay Nazarene Church until she was unable to attend due to her health. At the end of her life, she said that everyone needs to love each other and get along.
Mary Alice will be missed by her daughter, Margaret Ann Rowlett and her husband, Gary of Vevay; by her granddaughter, Sherry Rowlett and her husband, Carlos Delgado of Martinsburg, West Virginia; her sister-in-law, Gretchen (Carlton) Knox of Vevay; her several nieces and nephews; along with her neighbors that she was very grateful for the help and kindness, Dean and Tina Henry, Paul and Sharon Schmitt, and Mike Meyerhoff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Knox, who died on December 8th, 1968 and Ollie B. (Sutherland) Knox, who died on September 6th, 1966; by her husband, Wilford Delmar Scudder, who died on March 13th, 1983; her brothers: Willie D. Knox, who died on January 26th, 1996, Albert B. Knox, who died on October 11th, 2006 and Charles M. Knox, who died on July 24th, 2008; by her sisters: A. Dorothy Hambrick, who died on April 8th, 2006 and Clara Shreves, who died on February 21st, 2007; her nephew, Dennis Ray Knox, who died on January 29th, 2011; and her niece, Phyllis Hambrick, who died on October 20th, 2017.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 30th, 2018, at 1 p.m., by Reverend Mike Jones and Pastor Patrick Lanman at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday, November 30th, at the funeral home.

John Asher Barnes
John Asher Barnes, age two weeks, of Madison, passed away on Monday, November 19th, 2018, at 4 a.m. at Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
John Asher entered this life on Monday, November 5th, 2018 at 2:39 p.m., at Norton Women’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, the loving son of Ryan Cody and Ashley Michelle Smith Barnes. John Asher fought a battle with HLHS, a heart issue, and following his birth, had heart surgery. He was a very strong little baby boy who fought to live. The surgery was a success, but little John Asher passed away on Monday, November 19th.
John Asher will be missed by his heart-broken parents, Ryan and Ashley Barnes of Madison; by his big sister, Rebekah Faith Riley of Madison; by his big brothers: Noah Ryan Barnes and Luke Cody Barnes of Madison; his paternal grandmother, Penny Brim of Madison; his paternal grandparents, Fred and Francis Barnes of Vevay; his maternal grandparents, Rebekah and Roger Brooks of Bennington; his maternal grandfather, Knohi Smith of Canaan, Indiana; and his maternal great grandfather, Benny Copeland of Madison.
He will also be greatly missed by his aunts and uncles: Brittany and Landon Hitchel of Canaan; Kayla and Kyle Kimble of Vevay; Amanda and T.J. Hobson of Charlestown, Indiana; and Jeremiah and Haley Smith of Bedford, Kentucky; and by several cousins and great aunts and great uncles.
John Asher was preceded in death by his paternal great grandparents, Helen Marie Jump Barnes, who died on June 20th, 2007 and Glenn E. Barnes, who died on February 14th, 1988; by his maternal great grandma, Connie Eileen McMahon Copland, who died on March 25th, 2016; and his paternal great grandma, Robena Cole Ferris, who died on December 10th, 2009.
A private funeral service was held on Monday, November 26th, with Pastor Patrick Lanman officiating at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment followed in the Canaan Cemetery.
William Paul Schanding
William Paul Schanding, age 90, of Madison, died on Wednesday, November 21st, 2018, at 2:51 a.m. with his loving wife at his side at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
Paul entered this life on October 13th, 1928 in Harrison County near Cynthiana, Kentucky, the loving son of Thomas William and Zelphia Mane Schanding, He was raised in Cynthiana and attended school there.
On June 30th, 1949 Paul was united in marriage to Mable Bernice Turner in Paris, Kentucky. This happy union of 69 years was blessed with a son, Paul Douglas; and two daughters, Karen and Mona.
Paul had worked at Kawneer Company in Carrollton from 1950 until he retired in 1991 as a foreman. He had resided in Madison since 1970 and was a 65 year member of the Church of the Nazarene, where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent.
While in high school he played basketball with Joe B. Hall and grew up in the same community with him. Paul was an avid UK Basketball fan, collected duck decoys, enjoyed fishing, puzzles, Sudoku, and refinishing furniture. He was a devoted husband, loving dad, grandpa and brother.
Paul will be missed by his loving wife of 69 years, Mable Bernice Turner Schanding of Madison; by his loving son, Paul Douglas “Doug” Schanding and his wife, Becky of Saint Simons Island, Georgia; by his loving daughters: Karen Lewellyn and her husband, Doug of Madison, and Mona Crabtree and her husband Steve of Vevay; by his loving grandchildren: Eric Crabtree (Lindsey), Sarah Lewellyn (Fiancée’, Kris Mott), Paul Schanding, and Lauren Schanding; by his adoring great grandchildren: Xavier Pietrykowski, Magnus Pietrykowski, Eliza Mott, Abigail Crabtree and Harrison Crabtree; by his brothers: Joe Schanding of Carlysle and Donald Schanding and his wife, Paula of Louisville, Kentucky; by his sisters: Ann Chapman of Bargersville, Ohio, Betty Howard of Cynthiana, Kentucky, and Judy Blethen of Richmond, Kentucky; his sisters in law and brothers in laws, Mary Lou Crisci and her husband, Jerry of Palatine, Illinois, Noland Turner and his wife, Linda of Fort Worth, Texas; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas William Schanding; his mother, Zelphia Mane Schanding; and his brothers, E.T., Clarence, Leroy, Gene, Raymond Charles, and George Schanding.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday, November 26th, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison. Interment followed in the Grandview Memorial Gardens, 9306 North US 421 near Madison, Indiana.
Friends were invited to pay their respects to the family on Sunday, November 25th, and on Monday, November 26th at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene. Cards are available at the funeral home.
