18 January 1883 The Martinsville Republican

Obituary

Died at his residence, NAMAN REED. He was born in Kentucky, on the 8th of May 1813. He moved to Morgan County in 1831, where he has lived since.

From Centerton - After a chronic courtship of about 10 years, JIM MORGAN and MATTIE STIPP were married at the church Sunday night.

Obituary - ALEXANDER CALDWELL was born near Knoxville, Tennessee, January 10, 1827. Moved to Morgan County, Indiana in the fall of 1833. His parents were Virginians. His father died when he was quite young and out of 9 children, ALEX was the oldest son. ALEX died December 26th, 1882, aged 55 years, 11 months and 16 days. He leaves a wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Mrs. MOLLIE JOHNSON, wife of ALONZO JOHNSON and daughter of RICE and ANN BROWN, died December 18th, 1882, near Hall. She leaves a husband and 3 little children, a father and mother, sisters and brothers.

25 January 1883 The Martinsville Republican

From Mooresville - LIZZIE, daughter of JOHN GLANDON, was buried at this place last Wednesday.

Mr. JACOB FEAZELL, one of our oldest citizens, died on last Friday morning and was buried on Saturday. He was 79 years of age, and had been a resident of Indiana for 38 years, mostly spent in Morgan County. He leaves a wife and 4 children.

01 Feb 1883 The Martinsville Republican

From Mooresville - ASA BALLARD, of Indianapolis, died last Monday and was buried at Fairfield Cemetery, near Friendswood, on Tuesday. He was the father of J. D. BALLARD and well known in Morgan County, age 67 years.

Death of a Pioneer - Mrs. DEBORAH HADLEY, widow of GEORGE HADLEY, deceased, died at her residence, near Brazil, on the 16th. She was born in North Carolina in 1797. She removed, with her husband to whom she was married in 1814, to Morgan County in 1825, near the present site of Mooresville. She removed to Brazil in 1860, where on January 2nd, 1868 Mr Hadley died. Of a numerous family of children, 7 survive: ASA, J.W., ELLIE, ZENO, DEMPSEY, and SAMUEL, of Brazil, and Mrs. DAVID BLUNK, of Lake Valley, Morgan County.

Another Pioneer gone - From the Indianapolis Daily Journal,
Tuesday - Many of our citizens will regret to learn of the death of ASA BALLARD, the last member but one of a large and well respected family, that settled near Mooresville in 1822. He will be buried today at Fairfield, on the I.V. road, near his old home. Mr. BALLARD was 67 years old.

08 Feb 1883 The Martinsville Republican

Old Uncle STEVEN COLLIER died at his home, last Sunday night. He was a native of Kentucky and lived in this state 52 years; was 83 years old. He leaves a wife and several children.

From Morgantown - A son of JNO F. HAMILTON, living 2 miles West of here, died last Friday. His age was 17.

Mr. SAM LAKE's second and only remaining child, died, last Thursday. This makes the 2nd death, in this family, in the last 6 months.

In Memorium - WILLIAM BURNS departed this life December 28th, 1882, aged 57 years. He was born in Kentucky but had been a resident of Morgan County since his boyhood. He leaves a wife and 4 children.

Obituary - THOMAS J. BURGESS, was shot on the night of January 23rd and died in Eminence, Adams Township, Morgan County, Indiana on the 26th day of January 1883. He was born October 4th, 1854, making him 28 years, 2 months and 22 days old. He was buried at Stilesville, Hendricks County.

JOHN A. BUTNER, a prominent citizen of Mooresville, died last Friday night and was buried Monday. He was a prominent businessman of Mooresville. (See obituary further down this page.)

Today at noon, ANSON HENDRICKS, one of our best known young men and a most promising young farmer, was drowned in teh overflowing waters, near his home 2 miles North of this city. He and his bother-in-law, ALBERT NUTTER, had been out in a boat looking for hogs. Mr HENDRICKS was 22 years old, unmarried and resided with his mother, the widow of the late THOMPSON HENDRICKS.

15 Feb 1883 The Martinsville Republican

From Mooresville - Mrs. ELLEN THOMAS, wife of WILEY THOMAS, died on February 9th. She leaves a husband a 2 little children.

Mrs. MARGARET JONES, age 77, died on February 7th. She has 2 living children, B. F. and NATHAN JONES.

From Washington Township, Monroe County - Mr STEPHEN COLLIER one of the Pioneers of Washington Township, died at his home last Sunday night. He was 84 years old. He was buried Tuesday in the Collier burying grounds. Dated Feb. 3.

From Mooresville - Mrs. PARKER, mother of Mrs. JESSE TANSY, who died on last Tuesday, was buried on last sabbath, near Monrovia. Mrs. PARKER came to Indiana, during the Civil War.

Obituary - JOHN A. BUTNER was born March 12th, 1833, in MArion County, Indiana, near what is now Friendswood. His father moved to Mooresville in 1839. He went to school until he was 17 years old and at that time, his father apprenticed him to the cabinet business. Afterwards, he went to Iowa and Oregon but returned to the cabinet business in Mooresville. He served in teh Civil War from 1861 to 1864. He was united in marriage to Mrs. NANCY GREGORY, December 30th, 1869. 2 children, girls, were born to them, ANNA and CORA, the former 12 and the latter 10 years of age, who survive him. NANCY, his wife, died August 19th, 1881. He died February 4th, 1883.

In Memorium - ROBERT ANDERSON HENDRICKS came to an untimely death by drowning, in a bayou of White River, Thursday at noon, February 8th. He was born April 24th, 1861. At the time of his death, he was 21 years, 9 months and 15 days old. He leaves a mother, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
