Robert McGuan
October 19, 1944 – April 2, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mr. Robert McGuan, 64, of Catalpa Dr., passed away Thursday at 10:35am, at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross.

Mr. McGuan was born in Chicago and came to this area 15 years ago. He was a United States Army Military Veteran of the Viet Nam War era serving from 1963 - 1966. Mr. McGuan worked for many years as a Longshoreman in the Steel Mills in Northwest Indiana until his retirement. He was a member of the Longshoremen’s Union.

He is survived by a brother, Daniel Joseph McGuan,Esq. of Maryland. He was beloved by those that knew him and was a kind and graceful man according to those who cared for him at Holy Cross. In the short time he was there he touched their lives.

McGann Hay, Morning Star Funerals & Cremations, 21275 W. Cleveland Rd. has been entrusted with his cremation. No services are planned at this time. Memorial Donations maybe made to any charity.

Jeffery L. Luber
December 2, 1941 – March 27. 2009

GRANGER - Mr. Jeffery Lynn Luber, 67, of Granger passed away Friday at Memorial Hospital following an illness.

Mr. Luber was born in Lafayette, IN on December 2, 1941 to Clayton Talbet and Elsa Faye (Lambert) Luber. Mr. Luber was a manager at Southern Wine & Spirits Company.

He is survived by cousins: Robert W. (Marie E.) Lambert of Granger and Laurel (Richard) Melton of Cincinnati, OH, Bob Peterson of Oregon, John Lambert of Florida, Charlie Lambert of Granger and Greg Peterson of Texas; nieces: Amy of North Dakota, Jackie (Michael) Platz of Osceola, IN and two nephews: Ron (Kelli) Lambert of Elkhart and Jeff (Angie) Lambert of Granger.

Private burial will be Monday at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations in Jeff’s name may be made to John Hagee Ministries, P.O. Box 1400, San Antonio, TX 78295 - 1400.

Jacquelin N. Libstaff
November 12, 1929 - March 25, 2009

Middlebury - Mrs. Jaquelin “Jackie” (Crites) Libstaff, 79, passed away on Wednesday at Goshen General Hospital following an illness.

Jackie was born on November 12, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Clarence Clifford and Dorothy Bell (Ripple) Crites, Sr. She is survived by her husband of nearly sixty years Harold Monroe Lidstaff of Middlebury; her son Harold Henry “Mick” Libstaff of Adrian, MI and a brother Harold (Ruth) Crites of Horton, MI.

No services are planned. She will be cremated and her ashes will be buried later at Gracelawn Cemetery in Middlebury. McGann Hay, American Cremation Society, South Bend was allowed to help the family.

Memorial donations may be made in Jackie’s memory to: Care at Home & Hospice Services, 1721 S. Main St., Goshen, IN 46526.

McMahon, Ellen V.
Jan 2, 1930 - Mar. 23, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Ellen Virginia McMahon, 79, of South Bend, IN passed away on Monday March 23, 2009 in her residence. She was born in South Bend to William James and Urbany (VanDeWalle) McMahon. They preceded her in death. Her brother, James; and nephew, Dr. Michael J. McMahon also preceded her in death. Surviving are a brother, Joseph (Mary Ann); sister - in - law, Anne (Kil) McMahon; niece, Mary Katherine McMahon of Chicago; and five nephews, James Patrick (Amy) of Carmel, IN; Kevin Michael (Martine) of Lockport, IL, Brian Sean (Jodie) of Granger, David William (Kimberly) of Sarasota, FL and William McMahon of St. James City, Fla. Other survivors include her beloved great - nieces and great - nephews: Ashley, Allison, David Michael, Julie, Angelina, Kyle, Mitchell, Dylan, Shannon, Hanna, Ryan, Keri and Michael. Ellen was a dedicated professional retiring from Associates after more than thirty years of service. She spent her weekends entertaining her beloved family and friends at their cottage on Donnell Lake. She was a devoted member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, where she volunteered her time in the parish office for many years. Her love for the church and especially the Blessed Mother is what we will remember most when we think about "Auntie Ellen." A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Ellen tomorrow, Saturday, March 28, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, corner of Hill & LaSalle, South Bend with Rev. John DeRiso, CSC, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 pm today and from 8 to 8:30 am tomorrow at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd. at Ironwood Dr. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 pm today at McGann Hay. Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County for St. Joseph High School for the Michael J. McMahon Scholarship Fund, PO Box 837, South Bend, IN, 46624.

Becerra, Antonio L.
Nov. 25, 1946 - March 19, 2009

MISHAWAKA - Antonio L. "Tony" Becerra, 62, of Mishawaka, IN, passed away March 19, 2009. He was born in Cuba on November 25, 1946. He is survived by two sisters, Catalina and Barbara Becerra of Cuba; his girlfriend, Sandra Gonzalez of Mishawaka; and by many friends. Tony worked in the maintenance department at Notre Dame for over 26 years. He will be remembered for his charisma, his love of dancing and animals, and for being a great friend to everyone he would meet. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help cover funeral arrangements.

Handwork Jr., Bertrand A.
April 9, 1927 to March 18, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Bertrand A. Handwork, Jr. was born in South Bend, Indiana on April 9, 1927 to Ianthe Cole Handwork of South Bend and Bertrand A. Handwork, Sr. of Huntington, Indiana. As grandson of Dr. Elmer Ward Cole and Alice West Cole he grew up in the parsonage of the First Christian Church on Main Street. He attended Madison Elementary, South Bend Central High School and De Pauw University where he was an ATW. He was a non-commissioned officer in the Army Air Corps during his early military service. After receiving a master's degree from the University of Stockholm he reentered the military service as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve. During these years he taught social studies at Madison School where he was also coach. After graduation from the Command and Staff College in Manhattan, Kansas, he served the remainder of his service time on active duty. He received many medals, letters of commendation, and a master's degree from the Army War College. His final promotion was to Colonel while serving as an instructor at that post in Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Handwork; his brothers, Larry Handwork of Huntington and Ronald Handwork of Sarasota, Florida; and his former wife, Nancy Bittle Handwork of Fairfax, Virginia. His children include: Ruth Nieboer (Kourtney), Susan Bacs (Aron) of Orlando, Florida, John Handwork of Clackamas, Oregon, and Julia Thomas (Mark) of Fairfax, Virginia. His grandchildren are Geoffrey, Elizabeth, and Emily Nieboer; Aron and Gordon Bacs; John, Ryan, Melissa and Matthew Thomas. He also has two great - grandchildren: Sydney Baugh and Anna Finkelstein. Funeral services will be at 1 pm on Monday, March 23, 2009, in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Dr. at Jefferson, with Rev. Susan Beamer, Interim Pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Friends may call on Monday from 11 am to 1 pm in the funeral home. Military Honors and burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Col. Handwork's memory to First Christian Church, 1001 E. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend, IN 46617.

Myers, Harry Bruce
May 22, 1926 - March 17, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Harry B. Myers, 82, passed away Tuesday. He was born May 22, 1926, to the late Bruce and Edna Myers. He is survived by daughter, Shirley Myers of South Bend; two sons, Tom (Becky) Myers of Indianapolis and John Myers of Syracuse; daughter - in - law, Jacquiline of Osceola; and three grandchildren. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the McGann Hay, Morning Star Funeral Home, 21275 W. Cleveland Road. Services will be at the funeral home on Friday at 1:30p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Reins of Life.
Mast Jr., D. John
July 20, 1943 - March 14, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mr. Donald John Mast Jr., 65, passed away Saturday at 5:43 a.m. in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Mast is survived by a son, Mitchell Mast of California; three sisters, Donnajean "D.J." Tehl of South Bend, Martha (Dominique) Grand of Grenoble, France, and Barbara (John) Meloy of Florida; and a brother, Douglas (Lauren) Mast of South Bend. A sister, Joan Dubin, predeceased him. McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Homes, 435 S. Ironwood Drive, is handling the cremation. No services are planned.

Witz Sr., Charles A.
July 30, 1922 - March 13, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Charles A. Witz Sr., 86, passed away March 13, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Roher; and two sons, Terry and Robert Witz. Survivors include daughter, Marjorie (Delmar) Robinson of South Bend; two sons, Charles Jr. (Mary) of Plymouth and William of Mishawaka; five grandchildren and 13 great - grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday in the McGann Hay, University Chapel, at 11:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
