Fitzgerald, Edna
Nov. 19, 1909 - Jan. 30, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Edna nee - Mudd (Lumma) (Ackerman) Fitzgerald, 99, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend, Ind. Edna was born to James and LuAnn (Higdon) Mudd on Nov. 19, 1909, in Grayson Springs, Ky. Her formative years were spent in Sawyerville. She graduated from Benld Township High School with the class of 1929. On Aug. 14, 1931, she married the love of her life, Henry Lumma. They had four sons, Richard, James, Robert and Michael. She lost Henry to cancer in 1950. In 1955 she married Henry Ackerman and spent 14 years with him until losing him to cancer as well. In 1972 she married Raymond Fitzgerald, who also preceded her in death. She enjoyed being with her family, cooking, entertaining, playing poker and helping others. Edna is survived by her sons, Richard and Beatrice Lumma of South Bend, Ind., James and Barb Lumma of Jerseyville, Robert Lumma of Hazelwood, MO, and Michael and Sandy Lumma of High Ridge, MO; grandchildren, Mary and John Behrens, Beth and Pat Pingle, Dan and Tracy Lumma, Catherine Lumma, Jim and Sharon Lumma, Bridget and John Pargulski, Rick and Jamie Lumma, Heather and Chris Dohrn, Mary and Bob Sander, Greg and Alissa Lumma, Steve and Veronica Lumma, Scott Lumma and Mike Lumma; 30 great - grandchildren; a sister - in - law, Dorothy Lumma; and other extended family and friends. In addition to her beloved husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Garlon and Edward Mudd; and her three sisters, Nova Mudd, Virginia Grachalla and Myrtle Wickenhouser. In celebration of her life, visitation will be at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, IL. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 North Main Street in Glen Carbon, with Fr. Steve Pohlman as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Memorials may be made to the Sanctuary at Holy Cross, 17475 Dugsdale Drive in South Bend, IN, 46635, and may be accepted at the funeral home. Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon is in charge of arrangements.

Jones, Vera H.
Sept. 7, 1913 - Jan. 29, 2009

ELKHART - Vera H. Jones, 95, of Elkhart, formerly of South Bend, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2009. Vera was born on September 7, 1913 to Clyde G. and Ethel F. (Hoffman) Olsen. On July 22, 1939, she married Clifford K. Jones. A life long resident of South Bend, Vera retired from Bendix Corporation in May 1972 after more than 30 years of service. She was a member of the Apostolic Temple, South Ironwood Road, South Bend. She is survived by a sister, Marjorie Everett of Pontiac, Michigan; a niece and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her twin sister, Verna Ruff; another sister, Sarah Litty; and two nieces. A brief service will be held, before interment, at 1:00 p.m. today (Saturday, January 31) in the chapel at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

Delahanty, James L.
Nov. 11, 1917 - Jan. 27, 2009

SOUTH BEND - James Lester Delahanty, 91, passed away January 27, 2009. James was born on November 11, 1917, in Detroit, MI, to the late Edward Lawrence and Pearl Rivard Delahanty. The family moved to South Bend in 1930 where Edward was employed by the Studebaker Corporation. James is survived by his wife, Maggielee (Lancaster) Delahanty. They were married on May 10, 1941 in St. Matthews Catholic Church in South Bend, now called St. Matthews Cathedral. He is also survived by a daughter, Kathleen (William) Stover of St. Petersburg, FL; son, James Jr. (Sue Carrico) Delahanty of West Branch, MI; son, Kevin (Patricia Cudahy) Delahanty of Lawton, MI; and daughter, Jane (Jay) Edmonds of Paola, KS; brother, Thomas of South Bend; and sister, Evelyn Beeler of Bristol. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward, Jr. and two sisters, Marie Thompson and Pearl Shippam. Mr. Delahanty attended Central High School and graduated from Notre Dame in 1940 with a degree in Business Administration. He also attended Indiana University of South Bend. While pursuing his education at Notre Dame, he was employed at Studebaker and served as Sports Editor of the Studebaker Spot Light. After graduation from Notre Dame, Mr. Delahanty went with Automotive News in Detroit as Associate Editor. He returned to South Bend and went with the Uniroyal Corp. until his retirement in 1967. During WWII, Jim enlisted and graduated from the United States Naval War College in Plattsburg, NY. He has always been closely connected to Notre Dame and served as the permanent reunion chairman until 2000. He was given the honor of "Man of the Year" by his fellow classmates. He attended every ND home game from 1939 to 2001, when it became more enjoyable to watch them on T.V. Jim was a life member of the Elks Lodge 235 in South Bend and served as the Inspector on Election Day for many years. A Memorial Mass will be held at Saint Anthony de Padua Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m. where the family will receive friends a half hour prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, or to the donor's choice.

Radtke, Bonnie C.
March 20, 1952 - Jan. 29, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Bonnie C. Radtke passed away January 29, 2009. She resided in a group home locally. Bonnie was born to Gerald L. and Evelyn R. Radtke who preceded her in death. Bonnie is survived by her sister, Linda K. (Russ) Bailey; brother, Jerry L. (Kathy) Radtke; nephew, David (Paula) Ludwig; niece, Jennifer Ludwig; great nephews, Brandon Evans, Behrend Ludwig, Johnathan Ludwig, and great niece Megan Ludwig. Her family wishes to thank Dungarvin and IPMG for their service and love to Bonnie. A brief service will be held at the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood at Jefferson, Monday, February 2, at 11 a.m. Contributions may be made to Luvability, P.O. Box 46, Knox, MI 49120.

Burton, Richard D.
Oct. 4, 1946 - Jan. 27, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Richard D. Burton, 62, passed away January 27, 2009. He was born October 4, 1946 in California. He was loved very much and will be dearly missed by his mom, Roberta Kerr; daughter, Tyka Beeson; son, Richard Burton; sister, Jodie Burton; brother Patrick Burton; two grandchildren, Tyka and AJ Burton; and all of his extended family, friends and caregivers. His father, Robert Burton preceded him in death. No services are being held at this time.

Buszkiewicz, Kathy L.
Sept. 11, 1951 - Jan. 28, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Kathy L. Buszkiewicz, 57, of South Bend passed away on January 28th at 7:18 pm in Memorial Hospital. Kathy was born in South Bend on September 11, 1951 to the late Harlow C. Coney, Jr. and Lois (Nestlerode) Coney, who survives. On July 20, 1974, she married Len D. Buszkiewicz. Kathy is survived by her son, David M. Buszkiewicz ,her daughter - in - law, Kelly Buszkiewicz and her two beautiful grandchildren, Thomas Harlow Buszkiewicz and Katey Rose Buszkiewicz, all of Louisville, KY. She is also survived by her sister, Karol (Gary) Hoipkemier, her stepfather, Woody Woodburn of Leesburg, FL and two sisters - in - law, Susan Keller of Rolling Prarie and Lesley Coney of Osceola. Also surviving are five nieces, Susannah Hoipkemier, Katie Hoipkemier, Lisa Hoipkemier, Kelly Coney and Peyton Coney, and two nephews, Kyle Coney and Dalton Coney. Finally, she is survived by her two cats, Mittens and Jennifer, whom she loved very much. Her brothers, Dennis M. Coney and Douglas M. Coney, preceded Kathy in death. Kathy graduated from the former Jackson High School in South Bend, IN and from IUSB where she earned bachelors and masters degrees in education. She retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation where she taught English at both Clay Middle School and Clay High School. After retiring, Kathy held several volunteer positions at Memorial Hospital and helped to tutor students at St. Anthony's grade school. Kathy fed the birds and squirrels on the patios of her apartments and grew impatiens wherever she could find an empty flowerpot or piece of receptive soil. She loved wind chimes and windsocks, garden banners and Dogwood trees. Kathy played the organ and enjoyed the music of Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel and Judy Collins. She also liked the Poems of Dr. Zhivago and the poetry of Robert Frost. She became a Cubs fan by marriage and in recent years she loved watching University of Kentucky sports whenever she could find them on TV. She said many times that her son was the light of her life and she loved visiting and playing with her grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Little Flower Catholic Church on North Ironwood in South Bend on Monday, February 2, at 11 am. Friends may call at the church on Monday morning from 9 to 11. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Kathy's name to Pet Refuge or Little Flower Church.

James L. Delahanty
Nov. 11, 1917 - Jan. 27, 2009

SOUTH BEND - James Lester Delahanty, 91, passed away January 27. James is survived by his wife Maggielee (Lancaster); daughters, Kathleen Stover of St. Petersburg, FL and Jane Edmonds of Paola, KS; sons, James Jr. of West Branch, MI and Kevin Delahanty of Lawton, MI. A memorial service will be held at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 2, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, or to the donor's choice. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

King, Martha E. "Marty"
Aug. 30, 1929 - Jan. 26, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Martha Elizabeth "Marty" King, 79, passed away in Memorial Hospital on Monday, January 26. She is now with her Lord, loving family, and all of God's creatures. Surviving are her daughters, Ann (Wally) Harman and Melody (Frank) Grabarek, all of Mishawaka. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jackie (John) Gilmartin of Mishawaka, Aaron (Jennifer) Harman of South Bend, Julie Grabarek of Granger and Andy Grabarek of South Bend. Martha had nine siblings; currently three of her sisters are still surviving, Midge Stratton of Mishawaka, Marge Hardin and Betty Husband of Kentucky. Martha is survived by two sisters - in - law, Jeannine (Fred) Harman and Jackie King of Elkhart, and several nieces and nephew throughout Indiana and Kentucky. Martha was known to family and friends as Marty. She was born in Stithton, KY, on the 30th of August in 1929, to Henry Clay Streible and Dora Ann (Williams). Later Marty met Jack L. King, and the two were married on the 8th of May in 1948 in South Bend. Jack preceded her in death on 28 May 1984. Marty had a love of all living things and enjoyed spending her time with family and friends, playing bingo, and tending to her gardens. She also enjoyed spending time with her good neighbors, Nancy and Bob. She lived a full and wonderful life and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Healthwin Specialized Hospital and the 11th floor staff of Memorial Hospital. On behalf of Marty's wishes, there will not be any visitation. Immediate cremation is currently set up through McGann Hay, Morning Star Funeral Home, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marty's name to the St. Joseph County Humane Society, to Potawatomi Zoo or to Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana.

Grant, Merlissie
Sept. 3, 1936 - Jan. 24, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Merlissie (Howard) Grant, 72, of South Bend, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her daughter, Robertia Grant, and her son, Joseph (Mary Jo) Grant, all of South Bend; her sister, Odessa Chapman of Houston, TX; and her brother, Walter Howard of Yazoo City. Private family visitation and services will be held in McGann Hay, Morning Star Funerals & Cremations, 21275 W. Cleveland Road near Portage. Memorial donations may be made to the family to help with final expenses.
