Gibbons, William Daniel

GRANGER - William "Bill" Gibbons, 85, of Granger, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009, in Hospice House, South Bend. He moved here in 2007 to be closer to his daughter. Bill was born in Olean, New York, on February 2, 1923, to the late James Gordon Gibbons and Mary Ellen (Keating) Gibbons. His grandfather worked on the Erie Canal system in New York State. In May 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia, who passed away in 1981. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, and by siblings Gordon, Jack and Jane. Prompted by the bombing of Pearl Harbor, at the age of 19 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the 1st Marines and participated in the Bismarck Archipelago, Treasury - Bouganville Operation and the consolidation of the Northern Solomons in the South Pacific Theatre during WWII. Always a tough Marine sergeant, he was proud to have served his country and passed away wearing his USMC hat. He is survived by his three children, William Gibbons of Colton, NY, Paula Hallowell of Hilton, NY, and Mary (Jack) McCambridge of Granger, IN; and by seven grandchildren, Brian, Courtney and Peter Gibbons, Linda and Robert Carley, Chris and Ashley Peterson. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses and physicians of 11S at Memorial Hospital and Hospice House for their kind and compassionate care. Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date in Rochester, New York.

EDWARSDBURG - Mr. Marvin D. Bicknell, 82, passed away Friday in the Cass County Medical Care Facility. M.D., AKA "Bink" or "Fiddler," was a Navy veteran of WWII. He is survived by his sons, Thomas Bicknell, David Bicknell and Robert Bicknell; brothers, James and Richard Bicknell; and four grandchildren, Amy Tallbut, Julia Hay, Mary Bicknell and Beth Bicknell. SOUTH BEND - Everett "Punk" Miller 67, passed away January 6, 2009. He was born to the late Everett and Hope Miller, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard. On Oct. 1, 1966, he married Jane McCordell. She survives. Also surviving are children, Amy (Derek) Wiseman of Granger and Rock (Chastity) Miller of MO; grandchildren, Mason and Piper Wiseman and Myriah, Makenna and Mataya Miller; three sisters, Ann Zwer, Leta Babb and Vickie Miller; and one brother, John Miller. No services are being held. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Kapson, Karen S.

SOUTH BEND - Karen S. Kapson, 60, of Northbrook, IL, passed away January 4, 2009. She was born January 6, 1948, in South Bend, IN, to the late Jordan H. and Bette M. Kapson. She is survived by her brother, Craig (Carol) Kapson; a sister, Nancy Kapson; nieces, Denise (Joel) Kaplan and Heather (Brian) Lazarus; a nephew, David (Heather) Kapson; great - nieces and nephew, Betsy, Ben and Rebecca; and her beloved dog, Juicy, who kept her fighting until the end. In 1996 Karen was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award for the American Cancer Society. This recognized her extraordinary fundraising efforts. During one year, she chaired three major events for the society. Karen's strong commitment to fight cancer came as a result of her mother's death from this terrible disease. Over many years, she chaired a number of events, including Relay for Life, and was chosen to be on the Florida Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society. Karen had a master's degree in science, and she spent a great deal of her life in the fashion world before her mother became ill. She was a professor at Keiser College in Florida, and also taught at Bauder College in Florida as an instructor and counselor. She was in sales and merchandising for Polo Ralph Lauren. She ran two boutiques for an absentee owner. She was an account executive for the campaign division of United Way of Dade County, Inc. Karen was always trying to make others feel good, in a variety of ways. She will be remembered as a driven individual, who wouldn't stop until the task was completed. No matter how tired she became, she charged ahead. She was always dressed immaculately. Karen will be deeply missed by her loving family and many friends. We bid her farewell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, at Temple Beth - el. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Macakanja, Caroline E.

GRANGER - Caroline E. (Lafko) Macakanja, 68, passed away January 3, 2009, after a long courageous battle with sarcoidosis of the lungs. On November 9, 1940, she was born in Aka, Hungary, to the late Joseph and Anna (Furtenbacher) Lafko, who immigrated through Ellis Island just after WWII. She graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in English and Education in 1962, and taught first grade at Paradise Knoll School in New Jersey. On May 25, 1963, Caroline married Louis B. Macakanja, who survives along with their four children, Ann (Christopher) Hilger of Indianapolis, Karen (Trans) Amador of Hickory Hills, Illinois, Michael (Stephanie) Macakanja of Glencoe, Illinois, and Peter (Jennifer) Macakanja of Spokane, Washington; a brother, Edward Lafko of New Jersey; and 10 grandchildren, Andrew, Angela, Julia, Joseph, Elizabeth, Katherine, Bella, Megan, Emily and Nicholas. After her husband retired from the U.S. Army the family settled in Granger, Indiana. Caroline became a state - licensed social worker and was employed with Catholic Charities for 11 years. Caroline was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved painting and gardening, especially roses, and was an advocate of the Right - to - Life movement and a devout Catholic. Friends may call today, January 5, from 4 - 7 p.m., with a Rosary said at 4 p.m. in McGann Hay Granger Chapel (enter from Cherry Road). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Pius X Building Fund or to Reins of Life.

SOUTH BEND - Garnet C. Barrett, 89, passed away on January 2 in The Sanctuary at St. Paul's. She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Barrett. She leaves behind her sister, Betty Russo of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Judith Turpin (Bill); sons, Williams P. (Phyllis) Barrett Jr. of Westlake, OH, and Michael Barrett of Burbank, CA; four grandchildren and six great - grandchildren. Mrs. Barrett resided in Atlantis, FL, for 27 years prior to moving to South Bend in 2005. Private services are being held. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

PLYMOUTH - Helen M. Schrader, 88, passed away Dec. 30, 2008, in Miller's Merry Manor. Born May 11, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Signe Pearson. In 1943 Helen married William Schrader. He preceded her in death along with a daughter - in - law, Casha Schrader. She is survived by two sons, Raymond (Sue) Schrader of Mishawaka and Ronnie Schrader of Oregon. She was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church in Donaldson, IN. No services are being held at this time.
Farris, Alice A.

SOUTH BEND - Alice A. Farris died on Monday, December 29, after a year's struggle with cancer. She was born in 1926 in Prairie du Chien, WI, graduated from St. Mary Academy in 1944, and joined the U.S. Cadet Nurses Corps in Dubuque, IA, until her graduation as a Registered Nurse in 1947. Her family has lived in South Bend, IN, since 1961. She was preceded in death by her husband, James (1999), her son, Daniel (1988), and her brothers, Donald (Pat d.), Neil (Barbara) and Fr. John Ginsterblum, and by her sisters, Helen (Glen d.) Watson and Ann (Jerry d.) Sheridan.
She is survived by her sisters: Marian (Walt) Carroll of Winona, MN; Sr. Mary Joan Ginsterblum,OLVM of Huntington, IN and her brother Richard (Rose d.) Ginsterblum, of Prairie du Chien, WI; and her children: Michael (Pam) Farris of Florissant, MO, Fr. Bill Farris, OFM, of Cincinnati, OH; daughter - in - law, Cathy (Gerry) Trewhella of Granger, IN, Joanne (Gary) Hinz of Anderson, IN, John (Colleen) Farris of East Hartford, CT, Thomas (Kim) Farris of Indianapolis, IN, and Jimmy Farris of South Bend; 25 grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
After her retirement as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, Healthwin, and St. Mary's Convent at Notre Dame, Alice remained active in many organizations, especially as Eucharistic Minister of St. Anthony Parish, a volunteer for Meal on Wheels, a member of the Area Council of Catholic Women, a volunteer for Special Olympics and Logan Center, and a member of Harvest House. She bowled in two leagues and enjoyed playing bridge with many friends, and still found time to tend her gardens and roses.
Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2009, in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, where the Holy Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.
Memorials may be made to LOGAN, The Center for Hospice of St. Joseph County or to The St. Joseph County Special Olympics.
Alice's family would like to thank her close friends and the caregivers at hospice as well as the nurses who provided much support during the final months of her life.
