Geraldine T. Doran

SOUTH BEND - Geraldine T. Doran, 83, of St. Paul's Health Care Facility died December 5th. She is survived by her husband, W. Joseph Doran, a resident of the Sanctuary at St. Paul's; children, Anne Marie Doran of Indianapolis, Mary Margaret Doran Senft of Carmel, Joseph M. and his wife, Karyn Doran of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Lisa M. Senft of Angers, France, Joseph P. and Margaret F. Doran of Mishawaka; and sister - in - law, Sister Gabriella Doran, CSC, of St. Mary's Convent, Notre Dame. She was preceded in death by her parents, Zygmund and Hattie Piasecki. Gerry was a lifelong resident of South Bend and a graduate of South Bend Central Catholic High School. She was a construction office manager prior to her marriage to Joe on February 7, 1953. A homemaker and extraordinary hostess, she was a constant supporter of Joe's political career, working tirelessly for his election to office. She participated in numerous community activities including the South Bend Firefighters Auxiliary, the Westside Civic and Democratic Club and the Chopin Fine Arts Club, and was an active member of St. Joseph Parish in South Bend. Gerry returned to fulltime employment when her children entered high school, serving as head cook for the Holy Cross Brothers of Columba Hall until her retirement in 1982. Gerry was an avid fan of Notre Dame sports and provided wonderful hospitality after many Notre Dame home football games. Making guests feel at home and leaving well - fed was a hallmark of Gerry's entertaining. Calling will be on Tuesday, December 8th, from 4 - 8 p.m. in the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 9th, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish, 226 N. Hill St., South Bend, with burial immediately following at St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gerry's name to St. Joseph Parish, 211 N. St. Louis, South Bend IN 46617, for the benefit of the parish school. The Dorans wish to express our deepest appreciation to the staff of St. Paul's Healthcare Center for the wonderful care given to Gerry while in residence. You were always kind, patient and cheerful and gave her so much encouragement. Thank you!
Harriet J. Lehner

GRANGER - Mrs. Harriet Josephine (Deren) Lehner, 83, passed away peacefully Thursday at her home with her family by her side. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, SR 23 & Fir. Friends may call Sunday from 3 - 7 pm, at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Rd.), and one hour prior in church on Monday. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Mausoleum. She was born in South Bend on March 26, 1926 to the late Michael Thomas and Victoria (Olesky) Deren. On April 3, 1948 in South Bend she married Michael George Lehner. They were married 56 years before his death on November 27, 2004. Surviving are her children: Susan (James) Howard of Princeton, IL, Janet (John) Steed of Katy, TX and Michael (Cynthia) Lehner of Mishawaka; her siblings: Rosemary (the late Godfrey) Miholich and John (the late Jean) Deren and 11 grandchildren. Also, proceeding her in death were a sister Helen M. (Gene) Boatright and a brother M. Thomas (Marcia) Deren. Harriet was a 1944 graduate of Washington High School and was a member of St. Pius X Parish, the Ladies of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and the Elks Ladies Auxiliary. During her life, she enjoyed bowling, golfing, reading, needle work, gardening, dancing, talking on the phone, and she especially loved caring for her grandchildren. Dennis L. Aurand
April 3, 1946 - Dec. 3, 2009
NILES - Dennis L. "Den" Aurand, 63, died peacefully with his family by his side on December 3, 2009, after a four - year battle with multiple myeloma cancer. Born April 3, 1946, he was the son of John W. Aurand and Mary Ellen (Demuth) Burk. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Judy. On August 14, 1984, Den married Janice "Jan" (Abel) Parshall. She survives. He is also survived by his mother; two daughters, Denise Aurand of Elkhart and Delilah Aurand of Mishawaka; stepdaughters, Christin (Scott) Chapman of GA, Andrea (Rob) Long of VA and Emilie Parshall of GA; stepson, Mike (Gina) Shipley of GA; seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Sterling, Piper, Gavin, Kieran, Ashley and Tyler; brothers, Ron (Nina) Aurand of Granger and John Aurand of CA; and sisters, Jan (Mark) Bacon of FL and Linda (Larry) Kuczmanski of Mishawaka. Den graduated from Constantine High School in 1964 and attended Western Michigan for two years. He was stationed in Korea, with the Army, for two years. He worked and retired after 40 years with the railroad. He worked with NY Central, Penn Central, Conrail and Norfolk Southern. He was a member of the American Legion and Hope United Methodist Church. He also attended GCC. He was an avid bowler and won many awards. Most importantly, he was a loving father and husband. He cared a great deal for others and always tried to help people in need. He will be greatly missed by many. Friends may call in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, SR 23, today from 4 - 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:30 PM in the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior. The family would prefer to have no flowers. They would rather donations be made in Den's honor to Multiple Myeloma Research at Indiana University, Indianapolis. Thomas M. Bauer

SOUTH BEND - Thomas M. Bauer, 68, passed away with his family present at Memorial Hospital December 2, 2009 at 11:10 AM. Born in South Bend, he was the son of August and Anna Bauer. They preceded him in death, along with two brothers, Jim and Jerry, and sister, Mary Anne Edmonds. On August 8, 1964, Tom married Margaret "Peggy" Neff. She survives along with their four children, Phil of Florida, Judy (Mike) King of South Bend, Andy (Kari) of Plainfield, IL and Mike (Rebecca) Bauer of South Bend; six grandchildren, Matthew, Emily and Madalyn King and Anna, August "AJ", and Katie Bauer; brother, Ed (Mako) of South Bend, three sisters - in - law, Joanne Bauer of Mishawaka, Judy Neff of OH and Carol Bauer of Granger; brother - in - law, Eugene (Jean) Edmonds of Granger; and many nieces and nephews, who referred to Tom as Uncle Ornery, or "UT". Tom was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School and IU, Bloomington. Aside from his family, he loved his boat and golfing. He taught many of the accountants in the Michiana area. His teaching ended when he retired from South Western Michigan College in 2003. He was very proud of his children and was quite honored to have two that served in the Navy. Tom was a man of faith. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. Friends may call at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, SR 23, from 4 - 8 PM on Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Saturday at 10:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior in the church. Entombment will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Tom did not care much for flowers. Instead, the family wants donations to be made to St. Pius X, the Youth Group Mission Trip, or to the Christ Child Society.
Paul A. Halleck

OSCEOLA - Paul Allen Halleck, 57, of Osceola, passed away on November 18, 2009, in the Center for Hospice, Elkhart, IN. Paul was born on July 11, 1952 in Fort Wayne, IN, to Marion C. and Elizabeth Halleck. Paul lived in an Anthony Wayne Services Group Home and attended the A Wayne Advantage Day Program. Paul was also an esteemed member of the Luvability Ministries. Paul is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Blancher Halleck of State College, PA, and his brother, Phillip M. Halleck (Margaret) of Port Matilda, PA. His father, Marion Halleck passed away on February 19, 2009. Paul touched many lives with his gentle spirit. He demonstrated great strength, courage and determination throughout his life. He was a dear friends to many, including Michael, Rodger and Richard who shared his life journey through state institutions and nursing homes and finally to their own home in Osceola. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A special thank you to the staff of Anthony Wayne Services for the exceptional care, love and support they extended to Paul and to the staff of the Center for Hospice for the wonderful care and respect they afforded Paul in the last days of his life. A memorial service for Paul will be Friday December 4, 2009 at 1:00pm in the First Christian Church, Jefferson at Eddy, South Bend. Orison G. "Red" Kennedy

SOUTH BEND - Orison Glen "Red" Kennedy, 92, nationally known pharmaceutical executive, died on November 25, 2009, in South Bend, IN, after a long illness. He was born April 19, 1917, in Lost Creek, WV, to Charles E and Nora D. Kennedy. He grew up there, graduating from Lost Creek High School in 1935 as valedictorian of his senior class. In 1935 he entered Salem, College, Salem, WV, lettering for four years in basketball and baseball, and graduated in 1939 with a degree in Business Administration. At Salem, he met his wife - to - be, Betty Jane Ash of Clarksburg, a member of the class of 1940. She became a remedial reading specialist, and was the stabilizer of his life. They were married 60 years. Red taught and coached at the junior high and high school levels for three years before entering the Air Force, where he served three years during WW II. Upon discharge from the service, Red embarked on a business career that would see him begin as a salesman in 1946, and rise through the ranks from sales representative to national sales manager, and divisional general manager at Lehn and Fink Products Corporation in 1952. He completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1955. He Joined Miles Laboratories in 1958 as Vice President and Director of Planning, and entered one of the most creative and personally satisfying periods of his career. From Executive Vice President of Miles Products Division in 1960 to President of the division in 1965, he stressed the importance of growth through the development of new products and included the creation, in the early 60s, of the industry's first chewable vitamins for children, envisioned as a solution to his own children's difficulty swallowing conventional tablets. His career continued at Norwich Pharmacal Company as Executive Vice President in 1967, and as President in 1969, when Morton International and Norwich Pharmacal merged. Active trade association, he was elected in 1975 as Chairman of the Non - Prescription Drug Manufacturers Association. Red was active booster of his alma mater, Salem College. He became a member of the Board of Trustees in 1950, where he served for 25 years. During this time he served as Chairman of the Board for five years, 1963 - 1968, and was twice selected Alumnus of the Year. In 1987 he was awarded an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Laws. Kennedy was a lifelong member of the Lost Creek Seventh - day Baptist Church, and in his final years created the O.B. Bond Evangelism Ministry to help the denomination strengthen its churches. He is survived by a daughter, Katherine Kennedy of Vienna, VA; and a son, Orison G. Kennedy Jr. of South Bend, IN; and four grandchildren, Kristina Kennedy of Elkhart, IN, Karolyn Kennedy of South Bend, IN, Everett Kennedy of South Bend, IN, and Mary Elizabeth Herndon of Vienna, VA; and a sister, Mrs. Thelma Sleeth. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane, and three brothers, Lloyd, Erlo and Ray. Services will be private.
Rafael Macias, MD

GRANGER - Rafael Macias, MD, 80, of Granger, passed away Saturday, at Memorial Hospital. Dr. Macias was born on October 10, 1929, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, to the late Dr. Rafael Macias Pena and Matilde Arellano de Macias Pena. He married Mary J. (Sberna) Macias on June 29, 1955 in Belleview, OH. She survives along with their children: George (Martha) Macias, William (Susie) Macias, Meg (Stan) Mouser, Trish (Mike) Melton; and their grandchildren: Stan,III, Meghan, Gina, Ben, Jake, Jason, Amy, Matt, Nick, Jacqueline. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am, Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church where friends may call after 9:30am. Dr. Macias was educated at the University of Mexico School of Medicine. He was a retired Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon practicing for 36 years before his retirement in 1991.
