SOUTH BEND - Gwendolyn "Gwen" B. Powell, 69, of South Bend, IN, passed away January 21, 2010. Born January 13, 1941, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Mildred Burriage. They preceded her in death, along with her son and daughter - in - law, Chris and Nancy Powell. Gwen was a fabulous mother and loving grandma and great - grandma. She is survived by her three children, Rod (Laura) Powell of Rochester, IN, Ken (Judy) Powell of Kansas City, KS, and Heather Dixon of South Bend; six grandchildren, Mike, Danny, Jessica, Brandie, Cassie and Christopher; and six great - grandchildren, Nyah, Chloe, Liam, Logan, Kylie and Alex. She will be remembered as being very honest and having a strong will. She was a great cook and good friend to many. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in her name, to the COPD Research Foundation.
Valis G. Musselman

MISHAWAKA - Mrs. Valis G. "Genny" Musselman, 89, passed away Thursday in the residence of her daughter, Charlene. She was born in Millcreek, IN, to Earl and Alma (Worthington) Huffman. She was married in 1940 to "the love of her life," Quentin R. Musselman, who passed away on Sept. 23, 1987. Genny had been employed by the Indiana Toll Road as the Food Service Supervisor in charge of all the restaurants on the east half of the Toll Road. She is survived by her children, Charlene A. Musselman of Mishawaka, Carol A. Rozanski of Elkhart and Quentin A. Musselman of Amarillo, TX; a sister - in - law, Florence Huffman of South Bend; two grandsons, Anthony Lombardi of Mishawaka and Adam A. Rozanski of Elkhart; and two great - grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband she was also predeceased by her brother, Ray Huffman, and a great - grandson, Matthew G. Rozanski. Genny was an avid crossword puzzle and card player. She will be remembered by many for her famous neighborhood Poker and Canasta parties. She enjoyed cooking (especially her Ginger Bread Houses) and decorating: "she had very good taste. She loved shopping at Thrift Stores. She had a good business sense about her managing their rental properties after her husband died. Friends may call from 5 - 7 p.m. Monday in the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive at Jefferson, where the funeral will be on Tuesday at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Disabled Americans Veterans Association.
Brent L. Geiger

GRANGER - Brent Lewis Geiger, 28, passed away suddenly Wednesday evening at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka of an illness. Brent was born in South Bend to Dorothy (Granbacka) and Paul. L. Geiger who survive of Granger. Also surviving is his sister Christie (Jason) Krause of Elkhart and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by all four grandparents and an aunt Helen Huggard in 2002. Brent was in the graduating class of 2000 at Penn High School where he was a member of the 1996 and 1997 State Championship Football Teams and a member of the Track Team making it to the State Finals two years in a row in both the Shot Put and Discus, the first time in school history anyone had done that. He graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2004 with a BS in Environmental Sciences and a minor in Business. While at IU he was a member of TEK Fraternity and was on the Dean’s List. When he attended Schmucker Middle School he was the Bi - county Wrestling Champion in his weight class, which he was very proud of. After college he worked as an Operations Manager at Frito - Lay in Cincinnati, Ohio. While there he was a member of the Pacific Asian National (PAN) a professional trade group. Through work he was involved with the Susan B. Koman Race for the Cure, the Homeless Shelter and USMC’s Toys for Tots. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Saturday, at St. Pius X Catholic Church of which he was a member with Msgr. William Schooler, Pastor, officiating. Friends may call from 6 - 8pm TONIGHT at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Rd.) and one hour prior to the Mass in church. There will be a Wake Service at 6pm tonight in the funeral home. He loved his late dog Star so the family wishes to have memorial donations in Brent’s memory made to the St. Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Rd., Mishawaka, IN, 46545.
Vera Littleton Miller
August 23, 1912 - January 19, 2010
SOUTH BEND, IN - Vera Miller, 97, passed away at Ironwood Health and Rehab. Vera was born in Parker, South Dakota, in 1912. Her parents were Frank Joseph Fritz (1887 - 1960) and Vera Irene Stevens (1890 - 1978). About 1913 her family moved to Alberta, Canada. Because of her mother’s poor health, they were told to move to New Mexico. In 1915, they moved to Raton, New Mexico, where Vera and her brother Leonard grew up. After graduation from Raton High School, she attended beauty college in Denver and started working as a beautician. In 1937 she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she met and married Glen Berlin Littleton (1912 - 1975). They had three children, one of whom lived only six hours. After Glen’s death, she took a trip to the Holy Land where she met Oscar Edwin Miller (1897 - 1989) of San Antonio. They were married in 1978 and she moved to San Antonio, Texas. In 2002 she moved to South Bend, Indiana, to be nearer her daughter. Vera was a beautician for over 50 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Santa Fe and later in San Antonio. She was an amateur artist and won three awards from a senior citizen art contest in Texas. She loved to grow flowers and had a large flower garden in Santa Fe. Vera is survived by two children: Richard (Judi) Littleton who lives in Austin, Texas, and Ann Littleton, who lives in South Bend. She has two grandchildren and four great - grandchildren. Her ashes will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. There will be a memorial service for the family in June. SOUTH BEND - Helen J. Homman, 83, passed away January 15, 2010. She was born May 27, 1926 to the late Walter and Calla Dell Correll. She is survived by one daughter, Judith Russell; son, Roger (Dawn) Homman; two grandchildren, Dennis (Stephanie) Homman and Diane Pierce; two great - grandchildren, Kyle and Connor Pierce; daughter - in - law, Jackie Homman, all of South Bend; and brother, Walter Correll, Jr. of Denver, CO. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Ruby L. Stratigos

SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Ruby L. Stratigos, 85, died Wednesday morning at 9:00 am, at Shubert Villas, Holly Cross Village, surrounded by loved ones. Ruby was born on June 22, 1924, in Muncie, IN. She graduated from Ball State University and taught at Lakeville High School. She later served on the South Bend Community School Corporation Board in 1966. On June 22, 1947 she married George S. Stratigos, who preceded her in death. Ruby was a member of the Service Guild, Pi Phi Sorority, The Good Samaritans and St. Andrew's Greet Orthodox Church of South Bend. Her favorite hobbies included knitting, playing Bridge, working in the garden and travels to Greece. Most importantly, Ruby was a beloved guiding force in her children's lives and an adoring and treasured Yiayia to her grandchildren. She and her husband George purchased the franchise and started Barnaby's Pizza here in 1969. Ruby is survived by her three children; Spyridon "Don" Stratigos (Niki) of Bloomington, IN, Amelia Stratigos (James Allen) of Spokane, WA, and John Stratigos (Kate) of South Bend; and her grandchildren: Gabriel Stratigos (Stacey) of Atlanta, GA, Alexi Velis Weirich (Kent) and Dr. Nick Velis of San Fransisco, CA, Nick and George Stratigos of Bloomington, Johanna Stratigos of Scottsdale, AZ, Michael Stratigos of South Bend and three great - grandchildren, Olivia, Cannon and Sayre. "May Her Memory Be Eternal." Funeral service will be at 11:00 am, on Saturday, at St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church. Friends may call from 10 - 11:00 am in the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial donations maybe made to St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church. Marilyn Miller Doyle
July 30, 1923 – January 13, 2010
South Bend - Marilyn Miller Doyle, 86, was born July 30, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio to Welby West Miller and Maude Harrison Miller, and passed away peacefully in Memorial Hospital of South Bend on the morning of Wednesday, January 13, 2010. She was also preceded in death on November 30, 2005 by her brother, Welby Harrison Miller. She is survived by a son, James Leon Doyle of Mishawaka, Indiana; Welby’s wife, Audrey Lois Miller; and a nephew, Kurt Paul Miller, both of South Bend, Indiana. Mrs. Doyle was an elementary school teacher in the South Bend Community School Corporation for 32 years, both at Perley and McKinley Schools. She belonged to the former Alliance Francaise, several educators’ organizations, and the Leighton Center. She was a long - time member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of South Bend. Marilyn studied two years at Sophie Newcomb College, a part of Tulane University in New Orleans, and was married in 1944 before bringing little Jimmie into the world in 1945. Returning to South Bend in 1948, she finished her degree work at St. Mary’s. Mrs. Doyle was granted a semester sabbatical in 1971 for educational travel in Australia and New Zealand. She traveled many areas of the world including China, France and Hawaii. She had a strong interest in the study of French and Spanish. A Memorial Service will be held at in the First Christian Church of South Bend on Saturday, January 16 at 10:00AM. The family would welcome memorial donations, in Marilyn’s name, to the First Christian Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Harold G. Gerstenkorn

SOUTH BEND - Harold G. Gerstenkorn of South Bend, Indiana, died on January 12, 2010, at the age of 90. He was born Feb. 26, 1919, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Oscar and Lillian Gerstenkorn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by two sisters, Lois Frenthway (Robert) and Janet Nason (Robert). He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, David (Pamela Tomlinson); and daughter, Linda Weaver (Robert) of Niles, Michigan; two granddaughters, Laura Kolo (Weaver), husband, Michael, and Melissa Long (Weaver), husband, Michael, both of Edwardsburg, Michigan; and three great - granddaughters, Sara Kolo, Jessica Kolo and Abigail Long. When Harold was a young boy, his family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. He married Doris Albertson of Kalamazoo on Sept. 1, 1939. Shortly after, they moved to South Bend where they lived for over 40 years. In February 1944 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged in May 1946. In 1964 Harold founded NIMET Industries with three business partners. Harold became the sole owner of NIMET Industries in 1974. He developed many new customers, and developed many new business relationships with local, national and international clients. In 1978, NIMET expanded to a new facility in the Airport Industrial Park where they soon grew to over 50 employees. In 1981 he sold the company and retired to Marco Island, Florida, where he and his wife lived for 10 years, then later moved to Venice, Florida, for 12 years. He spent most of his time deep sea fishing and traveling with his wife. They were fortunate enough to travel to many places around the world and especially enjoyed remote locations, which Harold spent a lot of time researching and planning their trips. In 2002 they moved back to South Bend to be near their family. Friends and relatives may call one hour prior to the service which will be held in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel at 13260 SR 23 on Friday, January 15, at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Jeff Reese of Hope United Methodist Church in Edwardsburg presiding.
