James R. Wegs
April 23, 1937 – July 14, 2010
MISHAWAKA - James Robert “Bob” Wegs, 73, passed away in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center on July 14, 2010, after a long struggle with Primary CNS Lymphoma.
Born April 23, 1937 in Quincy, IL, he was the son of the late Frank and Gladys (Flynn) Wegs of Mt. Sterling IL. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Harry Wegs.
Bob married Joyce Markert on June 13, 1964. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Alison (Richard) Abner of Granger; two grandchildren, Amanda and Ciera Abner; twin sister, Betty (Gene) Jansen and brother, Harold Wegs, both of Quincy, IL.
Reared near the small country town of Mt. Sterling, IL, he graduated from the equally small St. Mary's Academy in 1955. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and spent the next three years sorting parts at an army base in Stuttgart, Germany and traveling around Europe with his army buddies. He had been introduced to a much wider world, so he enrolled in Western Illinois University and obtained his B. S. in Ed. with a major in history in 1963. Continuing his educational career funded by the GI Bill, he became a graduate teaching assistant at Northern Illinois University and was awarded his Ph.D. in 1970.
Bob began his academic career at New York University in Greenwich Village, where he enjoyed all the urban opportunities of attending the opera, the theater and jazz clubs. Then he spent one year as a visiting assistant professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tn. In 1977 he came to teach at the University of Notre Dame' s Dept. of History, where he served as department chairman and ultimately was promoted to full professor. In cooperation with the Holocaust Education Foundation, he introduced the study of the Holocaust at Notre Dame and for many years team taught this course with colleagues from the theology department. Under HEF auspices, he was able to travel to Jerusalem and to Poland to see sites important for the study of the Holocaust. Perhaps his proudest accomplishment was turning a lecture series into what was to become the Nanovic Institute for European Studies; he became the Institute's founding director.
His publications included The Economic Mobilization of Austria during World War I, Growing Up Working Class(a social history completed through oral interviews with elderly Viennese who spoke a German dialect), and Europe Since 1945, which has now come out in six editions and was recently published in an edition in Polish.
Bob's friends and relatives will always remember the aggressive tennis player, the lover of music who even studied the cello in his fifties until he developed “cello elbow”, and the appreciator of good wine.
Bob's family will always appreciate the wonderful medical care he received at the Mayo Clinic and the Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester MN and were deeply touched by the always personal concern exhibited by Dr. Brian O'Neill.
Visitation will be Friday (today) from 4 - 7PM at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, SR 23, enter off Cherry Road. Funeral Services will be Saturday at 11AM at the Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior.
