She is also survived by 22 great - grandchildren and a sister, Caroline Van Horn (Robert) of Los Altos Hills, Calif.
She was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Hinsdale, Ill., to Bernard William and Ethel (Law) Maas.
On July 31, 1943, in Hinsdale, she married Robert H. Olson Jr., who survives.
They were high school sweethearts who had known each other since they were children.
Their fathers worked for the same company and played golf together.
Their mothers played bridge together.
Bob called her "Peachy." Ellie and Bob spent the early years of their marriage in the Illinois communities of Western Springs, Hinsdale and Naperville before moving to Salt Lake City in the early 1950s when Bob was promoted from plant manager for Kroehler Mfg. Co. to sales representative. When he was transferred to the Midwest in 1961, they settled in South Bend, living in three different houses in Swanson Highlands. Bob retired in 1979, and they spent the next five years in a motor home, traveling everywhere from California to Nova Scotia. They spent their winters in Melbourne Beach Fla., where they attended Los Angeles Dodgers spring - training games, played golf, and attended their share of happy hours. They returned to northern Indiana seven years ago for good.
She and Bob were living in the Hearth at Juday Creek in Granger at the time of her death. Eleanor loved art, music and golf.
For many years she took piano lessons and continued to teach herself new music. She was very interested in art and painting, and took many art classes and continued to paint through her life for enjoyment. Her artistic talent also supplied an avenue for financial reward as she co - owned with her daughter Barbara a small creative studio called "The Owls Nest" where they produced hand - painted household items, ornaments and knickknacks. She and her daughter sold their work at a retail store on U.S. 31 North in South Bend and they traveled the Midwest attending art shows and festivals displaying their wares for many, many years. Eleanor was also an avid golfer. She shot three holes in one, and also played in many South Bend women's city golf tournaments. She and Bob played couples golf at both the Morris Park Country Club in South Bend and Four Lakes Golf Course in Edwardsburg.
They were also active in Moose Lodges in Elkhart and Florida, and were members of the United Methodist Church.
She was an accomplished seamstress and made all her daughters' clothes, including their prom dresses when they were in high school.
When Nancy was named homecoming queen on a Thursday night, she stayed up all night making a dress Nancy could wear to the homecoming parade and dance Friday night. She made her daughters dolls dressed in clothes she made herself, using toothpicks as needles to knit sweaters and caps. She also was a Cub Scout den mother, enjoyed playing bridge and attended numerous swim meets, ballet and piano recitals, baseball and hockey games. When Bob was coming back from the road and she was too busy having fun with her children to make sure everything was picked up, everyone would band together to straighten up the house.
She would hide the dirty dishes in the oven so Bob wouldn't know.
One of the highlights of Bob and Ellie's day was spending some quiet time alone together in the living room having a cocktail before dinner to catch up on their day. Soon after arriving in South Bend, Bob bought four season tickets for University of Notre Dame football games, and for many years they hosted large tailgate parties before heading off to the game, with Eleanor, like other women in those genteel days, getting dressed up and wearing high heels. She remained an Irish fan long after she could no longer attend games. Family will visit with friends from 10 - 11:30am before a memorial service at 11:30am on Saturday, Dec. 11, in McGann Hay Funeral Home on Indiana 23 in Granger. Memorial contributions may be made to Hannah and Friends, 51250 Hollyhock Road, South Bend, IN 46637; or to LOGAN, P.O. Box 1049, South Bend, IN 46624.
