She was also a dear friend and colleague to numerous others. She was a graduate of St. Mary's College and Notre Dame Law School, and completed graduate work in International Studies at American University in Washington, DC. She was a past board member of the Potawatomi Zoo, a member of the Indiana State and Elkhart City Bar Associations, and practiced law in Elkhart County, Indiana, for 25 years, specializing in Social Security Disability litigation. During that period, she was also a longtime advocate and lawyer with the Elkhart County Public Defender Office. At the age of 16, she was diagnosed with Lupus. Over the next 40 years, she endured three separate kidney transplants interspersed with a glut of other medical procedures too numerous to humanely comprehend or list. Yet, she refused to once complain of, make excuses for, be defined or limited by, or give in to her medical conditions or limitations, choosing instead to live her life with passion and zeal, and to the very fullest. She was intelligent, quick - witted and sharp - tongued, a formidable opponent, a tenacious warrior, a medical marvel, an inspiration, a wonderful wife, daughter, sister, aunt, sister - in - law, friend, and, above all, a genuine thoroughbred and a real mench. She left us far too soon and will be horribly and unbearably missed. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 3, 2010, at 10:00 AM in Temple Beth - El, 305 W. Madison St., South Bend, Indiana. GRANGER - Mary Elizabeth Brueck, 57, passed away Tuesday in her Granger home with family at her side after a nearly 15 - month battle with cancer. She was a unique combination of boldness and kindness, of spirituality and zest for life, and humor. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Pius X Church. The Rev. William Schooler will officiate. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Pius X Church with a Rosary at 2 p.m. and a vigil at 8:30 p.m. Though deeply religious and yet sometimes incredibly irreverent, Mary was known as the neighbor who reached out to all, saw the good in the most mischievous of kids and made sure everybody felt included. In her lifetime, the mother of three grown children and the grandmother of three more reached out to neighbors as close as across the street or as far away as West Virginia and Mississippi, the latter two of which she made numerous trips to both Appalachia to work on homes with the St. Pius X youth group and to aide hurricane victims. She took to heart Jesus' teaching to "love your neighbor as yourself." and fought for what was right for her family. She enjoyed sprucing up the family's yard. It included mums, bushes, trees, and a statue of both The Blessed Virgin and a flamingo. Mary was an active parishioner at St. Pius X in numerous ways including taking the Blessed Sacrament to the sick and homebound. She also enjoyed hiking, camping, kayaking, swimming, golfing, passing on an Internet joke and spending time with family and friends. She fought her cancer bravely and with gratitude for the care she received from her family and friends and hospice. Mary was a 1971 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy HS and a 1977 graduate of Eastern Michigan University. She is survived by her loving husband, Mark Korody, whom she married in Northville, MI on Aug. 11, 1979, and her daughter and sons and their families: Amanda Rantz (Randy), Nick Korody (Chrissy) and Cameron Korody (Angela), and what she treasured most - her grandkids Rory Rantz, Braden and Logan Korody. She is also survived by her brothers George Brueck and Paula Brueck, Jim Brueck (Ruth) and sister Barbara Shubel (Gus). She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Anne Brueck.
