NILES - Keith Roy Higgins, 40, of Niles, MI, passed away October 15, 2010. Born July 21, 1970 in Benton Harbor, he was the son of Linden Roy and Nancy June Higgins. His father preceded him in death.
Keith is survived by his mother, Nancy, of Hartford, MI; daughter, Ashley Leak of Niles; sister, Tina Oehler of Benton Harbor; and fiancé, Jennifer Leak of Niles.
No services are being held at this time. The McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd. South Bend, IN is handling arrangements.
The family has asked memorial donations to be made to the funeral home to help cover expenses.
Harold M. Libstaff
February 16, 1927 – October 8, 2010
Middlebury - Harold M. Libstaff, 83, passed away October 8, 2010 in Goshen General Hospital. Born February 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Henry and Myrtle (Chapman) Libstaff. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jacquelin Nell (Crites) Libstaff. Harold is survived by one son, Harold H. “Mick” Libstaff of Adrian, MI. No services are being held. Cremation will take place, then burial at Gracelawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Elkhart Humane Society.
Charles L. Tatay

SOUTH BEND - Charles L. Tatay, 69, of Ft. Worth, TX, formerly of South Bend, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 in Ft. Worth. He had complications from surgery that left his heart and lungs both weakened. He spent five months in the hospital putting up a brave fight to get well. Chuck was born on Nov. 5, 1940, in South Bend to William and Pauline Tatay. He spent most of his life in Texas. Chuck was president and owner of O.E.M, Inc. and Tatay, Inc. He loved fishing and traveling. He was an avid art collector and brought back many things from his travels around the world. He was a loving, generous and kind husband, father and grandfather He will be missed greatly by his friends and family. Mr. Tatay is survived by his loving relatives including: his wife of 42 years, Carol Tatay; his daughters, Mary Tatay Hohman and Coco Tatay (Bill) Bland and grandsons: Tre Hohman, Billy and Charlie Bland, and eight brothers and sisters. A celebration of Chuck's life and time for sharing will be held on Friday, Oct. 22 at 2 pm at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd., Granger, where there will be a reception with the family immediately following. Judith L. Askew

GRANGER - Judy Lynn Askew, 54, went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with Leukemia, on October 5, 2010. She was born July 3, 1956 in South Bend, IN and graduated from Edwardsburg High School in Edwardsburg, MI. On September 26, 1981, Judy married David Askew. He survives. She is also survived by daughter, Alisha Askew; mother and step - father, Betty and Paul Kendall of Granger, IN; sister, Linda (Keith) Maxom of Cincinnati; and brother, Michael (Cathy) McKee of White Fish Bay, WI. Judy mostly loved being a wife and mom. Her other passions included reading, which she passed down to her daughter, and collecting many different types of things. Friends may call from 4 - 7 PM today (Friday) at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR23, enter off Cherry Rd. Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 9, at 2:30 PM at the funeral home. Pastor Earl Smith of Granger Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Memorial Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Salvatore C. Lazzara

MISHAWAKA - Salvatore C. Lazzara, 84, departed from this earth to his eternal resting place on October 5, 2010, after a courageous battle due to complications of surgery. While there is relief that he is no longer suffering, his amazing personality, laugh, and caring soul will leave a void in the lives of so many. Salvatore's life began January 26, 1926, when he was born to Charles and Margaret (Datillo) Lazzara. The family moved to South Bend from Vincennes in 1936. He graduated from Central High School in 1944. He then joined the US Navy on March 10, 1944, during WW II, serving in the South Pacific on a destroyer, DD874 - USS Duncan. He was honorably discharged May 27, 1946. On May 8, 1954, he married the love of his life, Anna L. Galasso. She survives. To their union they had one daughter, Janet "Jan" Lazzara of Granger. Also surviving are two grandchildren, who meant so much to him, Brian C. Nordan of Fort Wayne and Angela M. Jasinski of Fort Wayne; and his siblings, Terese Binder, Anne Kovas and Joseph Lazzara. One sister, Mary Lazzara, preceded him in death. Mr. Lazzara was the detective sergeant for the South Bend Police Department. He retired after 27 years of service. He then became co - owner of Lazzara and O'Hara Soft Water, which is still run by family. Above all of Salvatore's accomplishments, what he was most passionate about was living life with no regrets and being a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. His legacy and memory will live on in the lives of every individual who had the opportunity to know him. If at all possible to try to sum up his life, it would be as Frank Sinatra said, "I did it my way!" Visitation will be held Sunday, October 10, from 3 - 6 PM in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, SR 23, enter off Cherry Road. A vigil service will take place at 4:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Pius X Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
Jean C. Szewczyk

SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Jean Cecilia (Wojcik) Szewczyk, 98, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday in Regency Place. Jean was born in Chicago, IL, on March 18, 1912, to Michael and Angela Wojcik. She was baptized and raised in Holy Trinity Parish, and as an adult she belonged to and sang in the choir at St. James Parish, both in Chicago. On June 2, 1934, in Chicago, she married Andrew Aloysius Szewczyk, who passed away March 25, 1961. After graduating from high school she studied for a while, intending to become a nurse. She was employed for more than 30 years as the cashier and treasurer at Continental Distributing in Chicago, retiring in 1977. She loved knitting, cooking and, in her later years, spent many hours reading. Jean moved to South Bend 17 years ago to be near her son and his family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame, IN. Mrs. Szewczcyk is survived by her son, Professor Albin A. (Barbara) Szewczyk of Granger; three grandchildren, Karen Knop of Indianapolis, Andrea Simpson and Teri (Paul) Sinka, both of South Bend; 13 great - grandchildren and one great - great - grandchild. She is the last of six siblings and was predeceased by a granddaughter, Lisa (Tim) Kruger of South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial and her life will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Damecampus. Friends may call Thursday afternoon from 1 - 2 p.m. at McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, a half - mile east of campus and from 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. prior to Mass in the Basilica. Following cremation at American Cremation Society, her ashes will be interred at St. Adalbert's Cemetery, Niles, IL. Donations in Jean's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Parish.
Margaret L. Koczan

MISHAWAKA - Margaret L. Koczan, 92, of Atria Tanglewood Trace, Mishawaka, died at 10:40 P.M. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Margaret was born Apr. 16, 1918, in Peru, IN, to the late Arthur and Grace (Booker) Carpenter. On Nov. 22, 1938, in Mishawaka, she married Charles G. Koczan Jr., who preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 2001. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Mason in 1988; infant son, Eugene in 1951; and two sisters, Hazel Keim and Florence Schrader. Margaret retired in 1979 from Koczan's Paint Corner which she operated alongside her husband for many years. From 1979 until 2004 she made her home in Pasco County, Florida, where she was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Hudson. In 2004 she returned to South Bend. Survivors include her son, Charles (Audrey) Koczan III of Granger, IN; grandchildren, Susan Mason, Linda Hazen, Diane (Randy) Rutkowski, Alison (Jason) Szabo and Charles (Christina) Koczan IV; and five great - grandsons, Phillip, Jacob and Daniel Hazen, William and Everett Koczan. Services will be at 11 A.M. today, Oct. 7th, in the multi - purpose room at Atria Tanglewood Trace, 530 Tanglewood Lane, Mishawaka, where friends may visit one hour prior to services. Cremation will take place with interment at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. McGann Hay Granger Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
