SOUTH BEND - Lena J. Berebitsky, 83, passed away peacefully October 2 after a brief illness. She was born July 2, 1927 in Indianapolis to Jacob and Rebecca (Camhi) Calderon. She married Harold (Teener) Berebitsky on March 28, 1948 in Indianapolis and has lived in South Bend since then.
For many years, she coordinated activity for the Friendship Club of the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley and was honored with a lunch upon her retirement. She was also a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital. She was a member of Sinai Synagogue and the Jewish Federation.
Lena enjoyed traveling and attending live theater with her husband. She also enjoyed bowling, mahjong, reading and hosting bar - b - ques and other family gatherings at their homes.
She is survived by her husband Harold of 62 years; sons Paul (Ann), Roger (Mara), Larry and Jerry (Diksha); brothers Hymie (Wanda) and Dave (Arlene). She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents and sister Annie.
Memorial contributions can be made to either Sinai Synagogue or the Jewish Federation.
Services will be conducted on Monday, October 4 in the Chapel at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Jefferson and Logan, Mishawaka beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Anna Olga Graf

SOUTH BEND - Ann Olga Graf, 98, passed away at The Acres of Indiana, New Carlisle, IN late Tuesday, September 29th. She was born June 25, l912 to John and Julia (Jambrich) Krizmanik in South Bend, IN. She married Wilbur F. Graf July 20, 1935 in South Bend where they lived all of their lives except for many winters spent in Clearwater, FL. Ann is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Frank) Nemeth of South Bend and a son Ronald (Darlene) Graf of Centerville, IN, grandchildren Jeffery (Nancy) Nemeth, Johannesburg, South Africa, Jayn (Ray) Barson of South Bend, Jon (Tracy) Nemeth of West Bloomfield, MI, Todd (Monica) Graf of Clarksville, TN, Nancy Million of Aurora, IN, Nicholas (Nicole) Graf, Los Angles, CA and Alex (Laura) Graf of Melbourne, Australia and thirteen great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister Julie (Steve) Nyikos of Broken Arrow, OK, brothers Edward (Eleanor) Krizman and Andrew (Florence) Krizman both of South Bend. She is preceded in death by sisters, Catherine Mezykowski and Helen Campbell and brothers, Mathew Krizman, John Krizman, Arthur Krizman and Steve Krizman. Ann was the oldest member of Little Flower Church at the time of her death. She and her husband, Bill, spent many wonderful years volunteering at the church. She was dearly loved by her family including nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to her as "Auntie Ann". The family would like to thank the staff at The Acres of Indiana for their compassionate loving care and also Becky, Bill, Lynda and Rocky for their dedication and love caring for Ann in her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 in Little Flower Catholic Church with visitation in the church Friday, October 1, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. and one hour before mass on Saturday. Internment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to Little Flower Catholic Church.
Mayer Goloubow
January 20, 1926 – September 28, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Mayer Goloubow, 84, passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle against non - Hodgkins Lymphoma. He will first and foremost be remembered as a loving husband to his best friend and wife of 61 years Sally. He was a loving father to his children Linda (Dr. Mark Toth), Diane (Dick Evans), and Ron (Christine Schenone); and a big brother to Mrs. Rae Smith.
Mayer served proudly in armed forces during World War II and was a graduate of Purdue University; class of 1949. He was highly regarded as a civil engineer and land surveyor in northern Indiana and southern Michigan. His professionalism and attention to detail made him well respected in the engineering field and all over the South Bend planning department.
His wisdom, guidance, and charitable contributions will form the lives of his surviving children and their children Sam, Abigail, Lisa, Scott, Garrett, Gabrielle, and Jillian.
Funeral Service will be held today at 3:00 at Sinai Synagogue; the burial is to follow at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Sinai Synagogue, the Jewish Federation, or the charity of your choice.
Susie Ritchey

SOUTH BEND - Susie Ritchey, 89, passed away peacefully in her home September 26, 2010. She was born September 14, 1921 to the late William and Annie Sparkman. Survivors include two daughters, Lois Wilkinson of South Bend and Betty (Larry) Clark of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Susan (Brian) Lee and Timothy Clark; great grandchildren, Brandy Cragg, Kayla, Madison and Owentyr Clark, Gauge and Savo Rios, and Daniel Lee; and a great - great grandson, Brenton Teders. No services are being held.
William T. Schmitt

SOUTH BEND - William Thomas Schmitt, 85, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 18th, in the health care unit of the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Bill was born June 18, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Mary (Newton) and William Frederick Schmitt. His education included Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and a bachelor's degree in education from Fordham University. He served in the U.S. Navy as radioman on the destroyer U.S.S. Maddox in the Pacific in World War II. On April 16, 1955, Bill married the former Eileen Bird of Queens, N.Y. They had one child, William Gerard, raising him in New Hyde Park, N.Y., where the family was active in Notre Dame Parish. William T. was also active in the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was an avid music - lover who embraced ongoing learning about science and current events. William T.'s career centered on writing and administration in the publishing and management consulting fields, including the position of sales promotion manager for the Grolier Encyclopedia Company. His beloved wife passed away in 1994. Shortly after retirement from the Risk Management Planning Group in 2004, he moved from Long Island to St. Paul's in South Bend. He valued the closeness to his son's family and to his new neighbors in the retirement village, where the Mass and a Rosary group were especially cherished. He was a member of KofC Council 553. In his final months he and his family valued the caring attentiveness of staff at St. Paul's. He is survived by his son, daughter - in - law Eileen (Schongar) Schmitt, and beloved granddaughter, Mary. Interment will be at Mount St. Mary Cemetery in Flushing, N.Y. Contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with calling one hour prior (10 - 11 a.m.) in St, Joseph Catholic Church, Hill Street & LaSalle Avenue, South Bend. Contributions in Mr. Schmitt's memory may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
Farrel B. Allen

MISHAWAKA – Mr. Farrel B. Allen, 97, passed Friday at Morningside Nursing Home. He was born in South Bend. Surviving are his wife: Beatrice; Children: Dorla Allen, Wesley Allen, Juanita Washington, Laura White and a nephew Jerry Bell ten grandchildren and 2 great - Grandchildren. His parent and a son Richard Allen predeceased him. He was a self - employed Mechanic and loved fishing, golf and going to LasVegas. Services will be later. Donations to: The Humane Society. McGann Hay and American Cremation Society are handling his cremation.
Agnes L. Szczesniak

SOUTH BEND - Agnes Loretta Szczesniak, 87, passed away September 14, 2010. Born November 29, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Nettie (Maievsky) Swirski. She was also preceded by her husband, Edward Sr.; and son, Edward Szczesniak Jr. Agnes is survived by her daughter, Diane (Rae Sovereign) Szczesniak of South Bend; sisters, Mary Binkowski of GA and June Downs of Michigan City; brother, Sonny Swirski of Michigan City; and a special caregiver, Kelly Rocca of South Bend. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Agnes loved....To DANCE. She and her husband would go to all the dances, dressed in their finest, and were the first couple up and the last to stop. For twenty years, Agnes taught belly, Hawaii dance, and developed an exercise program called Polkaerobics at the Forever Learning Center. As a young woman in Chicago, she sang in the Lyric Opera chorus and kept singing until the very end of her life. She worked most of her adult life as an executive secretary for various firms, including the Social Security Administration. The family would like to thank all the people that cared for Agnes so she could remain at home, especially her hospice nurse Chrissie. Graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday, 9/29 at 4 pm at Highland Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made in her name to the Center for Hospice.
Helen Donovan

SOUTH BEND - Helen Fitzgerald Donovan, 87, of South Bend, died peacefully in the early hours of September 11, 2010, at Morningside Nursing Home in South Bend. Helen was born March 16, 1923, in Cambridge, Mass. In December 1950 she married Mortimer J. Donovan, who was on the English faculty of the University of Notre Dame. He preceded her in death in September 1981, as did their son Joe in 1998. Helen is survived by her children, Anne McGraw of South Bend, John Donovan of Galveston, TX, Elizabeth Peralta (Paul) of Charlotte, NC, James Donovan of Chicago and Bernard Donovan of Belleville, MI; and grandchildren, Patrick (Lindsey), James, Katherine, Ellen, Grace, Thomas, Elizabeth and Anna. She is also survived by her brother, Kevin Fitzgerald (Joan) of Cambridge, MA. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, in St. Joseph Church, 211 N. Hill St., South Bend. The family will receive friends in the church one hour before Mass. Helen was a tutor in the Chapter One program of the South Bend Community School Corporation for many years and was later a dedicated volunteer at St. Margaret's House. She was a voracious reader, a champion of the underdog, a wise friend with a compassionate heart. She was a second mother to many throughout the years. She was well - loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Margaret's House, 117 N. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601; or to the Friends of the St. Joseph County Public Library, 304 S. Main St., South Bend, IN 46601. The family would like to thank the legions of friends who loved our Mother as we did, with special gratitude to Lilia Barriga, Helen's caregiver and friend, and to the wonderful, caring staff at Morningside.

SOUTH BEND - Irene M. Wozniak, 89, passed away August 2, 2010. On April 14, 1945, Irene married James Alan Wozniak, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Jim (Charleen) Wozniak of Granger; three grandchildren and one great - grandchild. No services are being held at this time. The family would like to thank the concerning people at Sterling House, and give great appreciation to the staff at the Center for Hospice. McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
