John Wilfred Fremeau Jr.
March 11, 1922 - Sept. 6, 2010

SOUTH BEND - John Wilfred Fremeau Jr., 88, passed away Monday at 9:25 p.m. in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, South Bend, IN. John was born in Lowell, MA, to the late John W. Fremeau Sr. and Ethel Louise (O'Sullivan) Fremeau. On May 1, 1948, he married Monica Ellen Kelly in Graniteville, MA. They were married 60 years until her death on August 29, 2008. John attended the University of Pennsylvania on the Navy V - 12 program, and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II as a Communications Yeoman serving in the Mediterranean theater. He graduated from Lowell Commercial College, and made his living as a grocer and supermarket manager for 30 years with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) in Massachusetts. He later worked as a banker at First Bank in Chelmsford, MA, and retired in 1984. He and Monica enjoyed 20 years of retirement in Bradenton, FL, before retiring a second time to Mishawaka, IN. John was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, IN. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Indiana, Massachusetts and Florida, volunteering his time with special - needs children. He was an avid golfer, bowler and bridge player, and he loved to travel. He loved his family, and had a special devotion to his grandchildren. Mr. Fremeau is survived by a son, Jack (Joyce) Fremeau of Jackson, MI; his daughters, Rosemary (Norman) Mathews of Goffstown, NH, and Joan (George A. Jr.) Spohrer of South Bend, IN; grandchildren, Scott (Lidija) Fremeau of Jackson, MI, Brian (Molly) Fremeau of South Bend, Joseph Fremeau of Mt. Prospect, IL, Michael Fremeau of Jackson, MI, Ethan Foss of Arlington, VA, Rebecca Spohrer of Geneva, Switzerland, Kelly Spohrer of Chicago, IL, Katie Spohrer and George A. Spohrer III, both of South Bend; and great - grandchildren, Colin and Owen Fremeau of Jackson, MI, and Audrey Fremeau of South Bend. He was predeceased by a sister, E. Louise Nicholson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Fir & SR 23, Granger, with visitation an hour prior to the Mass. Following cremation at American Cremation Society, he will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in East Chelmsford, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to Center for Hospice Care or to the Foundation of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are being handled by McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations| Gatherings, in Indiana, and Richard Burkinshaw Funeral Home in Massachusetts.

Elmer Jackson
June 7, 1924 - Sept. 4, 2010

NEW CARLISLE - Elmer Jackson, 86, passed September 4, 2010. Mr. Jackson was a long time and beloved resident of the Hamiliton Grove - Greencroft Community Homes. He was an avid fisherman, scholar of ancient literature, and civil rights advocate. He graduated with honors from Dusable High School in Chicago and later joined the Army. He was a patriot to the last and served his country honorably during WWII. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his family who loved him dearly.

Eileen T. Bender Ph.D.
Dec. 1, 1935 - Aug. 10, 2010

SOUTH BEND - Prof. Eileen T. Bender, Ph.D., 74, died Tuesday. Survivors include husband, Dr. Harvey A. Bender; children, Leslie C. (Chris Wunder) Bender, Samual D. (Ellen) Bender and Philip H. (Linda Rotuno) Bender; sisters, Edith (Melvin, MD) Goodman and Cynthia (Mark, MD) Soloway; and eight grandchildren. Private graveside services are planned for later today (Wednesday) at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the scholarship fund in her memory at IUSB where she was a Professor of English.

Robert J. Hastings
Dec. 30, 1948 - Sept. 4, 2010

MISHAWAKA - Robert Hastings, 61, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on Saturday, September 4, 2010. He attended Farris State College after graduating from Culver Military Academy. He worked in the South Bend area most of his life. He was a beloved husband, father and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethel Hastings. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Hastings; daughters, Amy (Nick) Drost, Angela Hastings and Allison Dewald; sons, Bobby Hastings and Ben Ameling; and by a sister, Doreen (Howard) Wilkison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to McGann Hay, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend, IN 46615.

Mildred E. Emboden
October 22, 1912 – August 25, 2010

EDWARDSBURG - Mildred E. Emboden, 97, passed away in her home August 25, 2010. She was born October 22, 1912 in South Bend, IN. Mildred is survived by one son, William A. Emboden, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA. No services are being held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Leader Dogs for the Blind, 1039 S. Rochester Rd., Rochester Hills, MI 48307. McGann Hay Funeral Home is being entrusted with arrangements.

Irving M. Waxman
Sept. 6, 1946 - Aug. 22, 2010

SOUTH BEND - Irving Mark "Butch" Waxman, 63, passed away on Sunday, August 22nd. Irving was the son of the late Sol and Marion Waxman. He is survived by a brother, Kalvin (Bonnie) Waxman; a sister, Diane (Mark) Voight; six nieces and nephews, and 12 great - nieces and nephews. Irving was fortunate enough to have had two families in addition to his immediate family, his Logan Center family and his Sinai Synagogue family. Irving was born with special challenges which did not stop him from living a full life and inspired his family to create opportunities for him and others with developmental disabilities. Irving was one of the first students at Logan School, the predecessor of Logan Center, participated in the 1st International Special Olympics in 1968, and was one of the first clients at Logan's Sheltered Workshop Program and a resident in the Logan Group Living Program. He was active in the local Special Olympics and the Logan Recreational Programs. He was a lifelong member of Sinai Synagogue. If it is our responsibility to live up to our potential and make a difference in our world for good, Irving was most accomplished. In his own way, Irving made a valuable contributions to the community. He was a trailblazer for those with developmental disabilities. He will be missed by all who knew him Services for Irving Waxman will be at 11 a.m. today, August 24, 2010, in the McGann Hay Funeral Home, 435 South Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN 46615. Interment will take place at Westlawn Cemetery, 78012 West Montrose Ave., Norridge, IL 40706, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to honor his memory do so with a contribution to Logan Center, 2505 East Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46615; or to Sinai Synagogue, 1102 East LaSalle Ave., South Bend, IN 46617.

Karl B. Varga
April 3, 1947 - Aug. 18, 2010

GRANGER - Karl Bruce Varga, 63, of Granger, passed away August 18, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 3, 1947 in South Bend, he was the son of the late Eugene and Helen Varga. On December 15, 1974, Karl married Star Ann Gill. She survives. Also surviving are sons, Karl R. (Kimberly) Varga of Mishawaka, William Minder of Elkhart, and Robert (Debra) Minder of Nappanee; daughter, Stacey (Jeff) Rach of Osceola; sister, Shari Cuzinski of South Bend; and eight grandchildren, Abigail and Victoria Varga, Lindsey, Ashley, Katelyn and Cole Minder, and Edward and Jeffrey Rach, Jr. Karl was a graduate of Washington High School in 1965 and earned his Associates degree in Business Administration in 1967. Karl proudly served our country as a Marine. Most of his employment career was spent in sales, retiring in 2009. He had a tough outer shell, but those who knew him best, knew he was kind, gentle and loving on the inside. He had many hobbies including camping with his treasured friends, where he was known as Baggo (corn - hole) champion, and he let everyone know it! He also enjoyed hunting in his earlier years, spending time by his pool, driving his Corvette and teasing his family as his show of affection, especially to his grandchildren to whom he displayed your typical "Grandpa" characteristics of spoiling them and teasing them to no end. We will always love our Papa/Pa! Karl could often be found with his friend, George, cutting wood, gardening, picking seasonal fruit or mushroom hunting, among other things. Karl will be remembered for his gracious and generous spirit. He was always willing to lend a hand and his caring personality was such that he did not like to see others hurt. He also never backed down from an argument...and he let you know what his opinion was even if you did not ask for it. Most of all, Karl loved his wife, children, grandchildren and his niece Candance. He will be forever missed! Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, August 23 in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, SR 23. Enter off Cherry Rd. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, or to the American Cancer Society.

LaMar Mathews
Feb. 25, 1923 - Aug. 13, 2010

GRANGER - The life of LaMar Mathews, 87, was one to truly celebrate! LaMar passed away Friday, August 13, 2010, surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. LaMar now joins his wife of 54 years, Margaret, who preceded him in death in 2003. LaMar was born February 25, 1923, to David Jay and Sarah May Mathews in Fawn River, MI. He has a large family consisting of seven siblings, three children, seven grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren. LaMar married Margaret Shannon on October 15, 1949. He leaves behind three loving children, Joe (Janet) Mathews, Crystal Lake, Illinois, Marsha (Richard) Daviduke, Granger, IN, and Ellen (late Steve) Pyznarski, Lockport, IL. LaMar was the Labor Relations and Benefits Manager for Clark Equipment (retired 1987). In his retirement he enjoyed winters golfing in LeHigh Acres, Florida, and summers with his ever - growing family across the Midwest. He was generous with his time and delivered meals to those in need for Meals on Wheels. He was also a regular at Battell Senior Center where he honed his game of euchre. Seven "perfect" grandchildren celebrate his life as they tell stories to his seven great - grandchildren on his ability to stack the deck in euchre, bluff his grandchildren out of poker pots, and the kindness and support he offered without hesitation. Visitation arrangements have been made at McGann's Funeral Home, (574 - 247 - 1411), Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Road), Granger, IN, today, August 15th, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., where there will be a parish vigil service at 4 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Fir & SR 23, where friends may call one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be at Battle Creek Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan. Donations may be made to the American Heart/Stroke Association, Greater Midwest Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Lockbox, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.

Mildred Knoblich
Oct. 12, 1923 - Aug. 18, 2010

SOUTH BEND - Mildred "Mickie" Knoblich passed away, joining the Lord and her beloved family in heaven, on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010. Her last days were spent peacefully with her family by her side. Mickie was born the youngest of eight children to Charles and Marie Marty on October 12, 1923 in Pana, IL. She is survived by her eldest sister, Agnes Elden Maxson of Elmhurst, IL; her 6 children and 10 grandchildren, Joan, Katie and Greg Wahlman of Houston, TX; Jean, Toni and Nicole Wallace of Washington, D.C.; Mary, Tim, and Kara Wynkoop of Roswell, GA.; Kirstin and Jonathon Moehlig of Lexington, KY.; John, Sheila, Andrew, Kevin and Marissa Knoblich of Acworth, GA.; Theresa, Michelle and Colleen King of Evanston, IL.; and Tom, Karen, John and James Knoblich of Mishawaka, IN. Mickie is joined in heaven by her much loved husband, Marvin "Marv" Morris Knoblich, whom she met on a blind date and was married to for fifty - four years prior to his passing. She is also welcomed by her youngest son, William "Billy" Gerard Knoblich; her parents; and six of her brothers and sisters. Mickie was a resident of South Bend for almost 50 years. She had joyous memories spending time with her many friends while raising her family. She was a member of Little Flower Parish and Sacred Heart Parish on the campus of Notre Dame, where she enjoyed interfacing with the college students and the never ending ND "Fighting Irish" spirit while working at the Notre Dame Bookstore. She was an avid supporter of Right To Life, the Center for the Homeless in South Bend, and an active member of her church community. After graduating with a degree in Chemistry from St. Francis College in Joliet, IL and her marriage, Mickie had the daunting task of raising seven children. With the patience of St. Job and her strong Catholic faith, she faced each day with compassion and never - ending love for her family, her siblings and friends. She was known for her gentle spirit, her wit and her creativity in managing a large family. Mickie moved to Atlanta in 2002 to be with her children, Mary and John and their families. The family invites you to visitation from 2 to 6 p.m., with a rosary at 4 p.m. in McGann Hay Funeral Homes University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison at Ironwood on Sunday, August 22. A funeral Mass with burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery will be in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of Notre Dame at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 23 with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Right To Life, 320 N. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601, or the Center for the Homeless, 813 South Michigan, South Bend, IN 46601.
