Francis Carl Shafer
Oct. 4, 1920 - July 25, 2010
GRANGER - Francis Carl Shafer, 89, of Granger, formerly of South Bend, passed away July 25, 2010. Born October 4, 1920, he was the son of the late Vernon Joseph and Louise Clara (Schiffli) Shafer. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Fred Shafer. After serving in the Army during World War II as an engineer, Francis married Joan M. Vanderbosch on November 22, 1945. She preceded him in death in 2002. Francis is survived by two daughters, Linda (Doc Andrews) Shafer of Granger and Sandi Plummer of New Palestine, IN; two brothers, Joseph of South Bend and Jack Shafer of Granger; four grandchildren and one great - grandchild. Mr. Shafer was a tool designer and later an engineer draftsman. He retired from Bendix in 1985. His favorite thing in life was tennis (playing and watching), being an avid tennis player until age 85, winning many city and state tournaments. After retirement he was asked and then coaxed by his daughter to take a coaching job with Saint Joseph High School which he thoroughly enjoyed for the next 15 years. He also enjoyed bowling, and was a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame. Francis retired as a football usher, holding a Gold Card, at the University of Notre Dame. He was also a member of St. Anthony's Parish where he was part of the Ushers Club. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 AM on Friday in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, with Mass beginning at 11 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Please don't send flowers; instead, please make donations to the church.
Mike Burnette
ST. JOSEPH - Michael John Burnette passed into His gracious Light on July 20, 2010.
Mike touched the hearts of everyone he met and never knew a stranger.
Mike was born Feb. 15, 1953, in Watervliet, to Bill and Edna (Bahm) Burnette. He grew up in Keeler and attended the first school (Arlington) and workshop in Van Buren County for children with learning disabilities, which his parents help found. He lived in St. Joseph and worked at Gateway before retiring. He was very active in Milestone programs, Special Art Programs and Area 17 Special Olympics. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, bowling and "Duh Cubs."
Mike is survived by his siblings - Pat, St. Joseph, Carl, Seattle, and Judy (Homer) Sales, Fairview, N.C.; his niece, Amy Muth, Atlanta; his nephews, Grant (Kristen) Root, St. Joseph, and Chris (Deborah) Winans, Richmond, Va.; his special great - nieces and nephews - Alex, Brian, Carter, Derek and Elizabeth Root, St. Joseph; Benjamin, Rebekah and Ana Winans, Richmond, Va.
He will be remembered by his dearest friends - Jim and Joyce Bunk, Krin Jurgensen, Marie (Al) Hartline, Bryce, (Sandy), Tristan and Meghan Engle, Renata Hartman, Peg and Ron Davis, Cindy (Rick) Jones, Deanna (Loyall) Bennett, Jolene and Doug VonKoenig, Magda and Bruce Zoschke, Sandy and Dennis Hafer, The Birthday Group, his Hidey Ho Neighbors, all his Canadian friends, all his Special "Buddies" at Milestones, Gateway, Special Olympics, and Spiritual Frontiers, they were all like family to Mike.

Dorothea Lorraine Jura
January 5, 1931 – August 13, 2010
SOUTH BEND – Dorothea “Dee” Jura, 79, of Regency Place of South Bend, Indiana, formerly of Walahalla & Lakeview, Michigan passed away peacefully on Friday, August 13 in Hospice House Palliative Care Elkhart, Indiana.
Dee was born in Milton Township, Michigan on January 5, 1931 to Warner and Maude Hause who both preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her son Steve (Deb) Jura and brother Ronald Hause.
Survivors include her 3 children; Scott (Marcia) Jura of Delphi, Indiana along with their 3 sons, Jonathan, Martyn, and Silas Jura. Sandu (Dan) Harrell of Granger, Indiana and their children Bryan (Haley) Harrell, Brittany (Wade) Iams, and Lauren Harrell. Shaun Jura of Delphi, Indiana and the grandchildren of Steve (Deb) Jura; Mike (Jennifer) Jura, Misty Jura, and Marc Jura.
Dee is also survived by three sisters; Elaine (Jim) Shupe, Bobbie Soule, and Wanetta Mahlich, all of Michigan and 5 great - grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be arranged by McGann Hay Funeral Home, 13260 SR 23, Granger, Indiana at a later date, but the family wishes to thank the many caring people who have assisted Dee while at Regency Place of South Bend & Hospice House.
Jane E. Wogoman
May 3, 1942 - Aug. 12, 2010
ELKHART - Jane Eileen Wogoman, 68, of Elkhart, IN, died of surgical complications Thursday in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 3, 1942, in South Bend, IN, to Allen and Musa (Walker) Daffinee. She married Frank Wogoman on July 31, 1965, in South Bend. She graduated from James Witcomb Riley High School in 1960. She received an Associate Degree from Ball State University in 1962. She worked at Miles Laboratories/Bayer Corporation from 1962 until retirement in 1999. She enjoyed many years singing with the Sweet Adelines. The Melodeers won numerous national competitions and sang the National Anthem at a Chicago Cubs game. In her retirement she was an active member of the community as a volunteer for the South Bend Symphony Orchestra League, Center for History where she was named an outstanding volunteer in 2010, the South Bend Library, and the South Bend Regional Airport. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, her brother, Richard Daffinee, as well as by her parents. Survivors include sister - in - law, Cathy Daffinee (Jim) Heeter of Long Beach, IN; nephew, Jim (Cindy) Daffinee of Westfield, IN; nephew, Marc (Sirilak) Daffinee of South Bend, IN; niece, Jill (Jason) Jaronik of Granger, IN; great - nephews, Suepsai Daffinee and Camden Daffinee; great - nieces, Kenzie Daffinee, Isabelle and Sophia Jaronik. Friends may call from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. on. Monday, August 16th, in McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Road). WILLIAM H. “UNCLE BILL” KROGER
July 26, 1923 - August 10, 2010
SOUTH BEND - William H. Kroger, 87, of South Bend, IN, known to all as “Uncle Bill”, died on August 10, 2010, at The Milton Home. Born July 26, 1923, in Michigan City, IN, he was the son of the late Dominic F. Kroger and Bernice L. (Fogelman) Kroger. He was also predeceased by his son, Robert H. Kroger. who died in February 1968 in Viet Nam while serving his country in the U.S. Army. On March 24, 1945, Bill married Patricia D. MacDonald, who survives. Also surviving are his sister, Phyllis J. Fitzgerald, his two brothers, Ronald G. (Jan) Kroger, of Clayton, IN, and Darryl D. (Judy) Kroger, his sister - in - law, Mildred R. Seall, his brother - in - law, Winfield A. MacDonald, his many nieces and nephews, and his good friend Walter Overton.
Bill was employed by The Torrington Company for over 31 years, where he served as a Maintenance Supervisor. Prior to that, he had been a South Bend City Fireman. Bill was a combat veteran of World War II, having served in the Army from January 1943 until February 1946. He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School.
For many years, Bill was the Treasurer of the Inter - City Catholic League. He also was active as an Umpire in the South Bend City Baseball and Softball Leagues for several years, after his playing days ended. Bill was like a second father to his many nieces and nephews. Whenever his nieces or nephews, or their children, were participating in any athletic or other event, Bill and his wife Pat were always in attendance to offer their support and encouragement. He was also an avid fan of all Notre Dame sports teams, as well as the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 13, 2010, at St. Joseph Church in South Bend, where he was a parishioner. Friends may call at the Church one hour prior to the funeral services. Joyce E. Murdock
May 1, 1944 - Aug. 4, 2010
SOUTH BEND - The gentle soul of Joyce Elizabeth returned to God on August 4, 2010. She was born the only child of Howard and Lucille (Kinerk) Murdock on May 1, 1944. Both parents are deceased. Joyce lovingly cared for her mother for many years. She graduated from LaPorte High School in 1962, St Mary's of the Woods, Terre Haute, Ind. in 1966, and Purdue School of Nursing in 1977. Joyce lived her passion for nursing, retiring from Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was known among her colleagues as a "great IV nurse". A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 7, at 10:00 a.m. in St Joseph Catholic Church in South Bend. Visitation will be in the church one hour prior to the mass. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery in LaPorte. Joyce leaves dear friends a wealth of smiles and laughter by her good humor. May she now rest peacefully with her parents and family. Joyce loved to read, so in lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the St. Joseph County Public Library.
Roberta L. Noland
May 17, 1947 - July 31, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Roberta L. Noland, 63, passed away unexpectedly at Ironwood Health and Rehab on Saturday, July 31, 2010. Roberta was born on May 17, 1947, to the late Robert and Wilma Noland, who both passed away in 1974. Left surviving are her sister, Ruth (Greg) Kozak of South Bend, and their children, Rosemary and Steven Kozak. Born with spinabifida, Roberta NEVER let her disabilities stand in her way; she never saw it as a burden, just an obstacle. No matter the condition, she was always more concerned about others. Roberta loved to, and enjoyed, working at Logan Industries for many years. As well as working, she was an active member of the R.A.Pclub (Really Able People). Among her many interests, Roberta loved her Soap Operas, Diet Dr. Pepper, and B.I.N.G.O. She had no enemies and touched the lives of whomever she met. She was a loving sister and aunt who will be missed by her friends and family. Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Aug. 5th, in the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend. Rev. Carl Bassett will officiate. Friends and family may visit one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Thomas Edward Hoyer Sr.

MISHAWAKA - Thomas Edward Hoyer Sr., 90, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2010, with family by his side. He was born to Raymond A. and Mary Kohin Hoyer on December 19, 1919, in LaSalle, Illinois. The family moved to Mishawaka in 1924 when Raymond Hoyer joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame. They moved to 1001 E. Corby Street in South Bend in 1926. Tom Hoyer formed a lifelong attachment to Notre Dame, watching Knute Rockne's stadium go up in an empty field on the north side of Angela Blvd. He attended St. Joseph's grade school and then Central High School. At Central he was an outstanding athlete, earning his varsity letter four straight years in both swimming and football. He swam on two of Coach John Wilmore's State Champion teams (1935 & 1938). In his senior year, he was elected captain of the swimming team and was conference champion in the 40 freestyle and anchorman on the 1st place 180 - yd. Medley Relay. On the football team he was the primary ball carrier for the legendary Bob Jones - coached offense and also starred on defense. In 1937 he was named 1st team full back on the very first South Bend All City Team After graduating from Central in 1938, he entered the University of Notre Dame, where he majored in Physical Education and was on the swimming and gymnastics teams. He graduated in 1942 with a physical education degree and was drafted into the Army Air Force. He served in Lakeland, Florida, and England between May 22, 1943, and Feb. 6, 1946, mustering out as a 1st lieutenant. He remained active in the Air Force Reserves in which he served as liaison officer to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for the South Bend areas. He referred many outstanding students to the Academy over the years and retired in 1984 at the rank of Reserve Lt. Colonel. On September 8, 1945, at the SFAAF base in Sioux Falls, SD, Tom married Jeanne Audrey Crockett of Roseland. During over 60 years of marriage, Tom and Jeanne had seven children, six of whom survived and were raised in South Bend. After the war the couple returned to South Bend where Tom worked briefly for Studebaker. In the fall of 1947 he began his long teaching and coaching career by accepting a job at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1949 Central High School appointed Tom Hoyer head swimming coach. He coached for 10 seasons as varsity swimming coach and as a junior high assistant in football and baseball. His 1955 swim team won the state championship, the school's first since 1939 when Hoyer, as a sprint star, helped the Bears capture the championship. During his tenure, he produced 11 individual state champions. Three other Hoyer - coached teams finished second in the State Championship meet but none ever placed lower than 5th. His Bears also captured three Northern Indiana Conference championships and six city titles before his coaching retirement in 1959. In recognition of his contribution as a coach, he received the Wegner Award in 1983. In April 2007 he was inducted into the Indiana High School Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame. In addition to coaching, Tom was a lifelong teacher. He taught Social Studies and American History at Central (1949 - 1965), Jackson (1965 - 1975), and Riley (1975 - 1984). He was Chairman of the Social Studies Department at both Jackson and Riley. During his long teaching career, he completed graduate work at Western Reserve, Indiana University, Purdue University and Notre Dame. Many of his former students will remember with great pleasure their Basic Events in U.S. History and the American Presidents, which were fixed in their minds using HAM, the Hoyer Association Method. He retired from the Riley High School faculty in 1984 In retirement, he re - established his close relationship with Notre Dame, swimming every weekday at the Rockne Memorial and walking the Notre Dame campus. Avidly following Notre Dame football was one of his greatest pleasures. In 2005 he moved with his wife from his longtime home at 815 Patterson Drive to live at Tanglewood Trace in Mishawaka. He moved to Fountainview in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne C. Hoyer; his brother, Robert Hoyer (Gloria); and his children, Thomas E. Hoyer Jr. (Maureen), Timothy P. Hoyer (Toni Folger), Judith Berg (Tom), Janet S Hoyer (Kim Orfanos), Jeanne M. Hoyer and JohnPaul Hoyer (Marlow). He is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher Moon (Berg) and Zoe' Orfanos. Visitation will be held at Little Flower Church on Tuesday afternoon, August 3rd, from 4 to 6 p.m. On Wednesday morning, August 4th, there will be an a hour of visitation at Little Flower Church at 9 a.m.. followed by a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Memorials for Thomas may be made to Catholic Charities.
Annamae Bauer
April 28, 1933 – July 30, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Annamae Bauer, 77, of South Bend, passed away July 30, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Anna Marie Hummel; and daughter, Barbara Ann Snider. On September 5, 1953, Annamae married the love of her life, George A. Bauer. He survives; along with a grandson, Donald Schiring of Pittsburg; and a great granddaughter. Annamae retired, after 33 years, from the University of Notre Dame, where she worked in the Economics Dept. No services are being held at this time.
Richard F. Good
May 1, 1957 - July 26, 2010
GRANGER - Richard Francis Good, 53, of Granger, passed away in Cancun, Mexico, on Monday, July 26th. All who knew Richard know what a wonderful son, father, brother, boss and friend he was. He was successful in all areas of his life. He was extremely intelligent and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Akron in Industrial Management. He owned a successful business that has grown and prospered for over 26 years. He loved to travel, and had been to many exotic locations, including Jamaica, St. Martins and Puerto Vallarta. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, supported Right to Life, and loved Notre Dame football. He has helped so many people throughout his life and has left a lasting legacy through his family, friends and business. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Richard's surviving family includes his mother, Pauline Good - Hales of Akron, Ohio; two children, Autumn and Maryann of Granger; former wife, Lou (Bailey); girlfriend, Colleen Krugh; three sisters, Linda (Darrell) Olson of Watauga, Texas, Francine Good of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Debbie (Greg) Eldridge of Mogadore, Ohio; two nephews, Justin and Tyler Eldridge; two nieces, Kathy Dorsey and Erica Olson; and numerous close friends. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Francis, and by his grandparents. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 2nd, and the funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd, at noon, with viewing one hour prior to service in the McGann Hay Granger Chapel at 13260 SR 23, Granger.
