Mary B. Johnson
Mary Bernice Johnson, 83, of 1250E 200N, Wabash, died Jan. 28, 1997 at Community Care Center, Wabash. She was born Aug. 15, 1913 in Wabash County to John Charles and Minnie Catherine (Truss) Trent. She married Franklin Johnson June 1, 1941 and he died May 22, 1974.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Lagro United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a 1931 graduate of Somerset High School. She taught Sunday School classes. She was a 50-year member of Home Eco-nomics Clubs of Wabash County and a current member of the Progressive Homemaker Club. She loved to travel and had vis-ited all 50 states and all but one province of Canada, and five Eu-ropean countries. She worked for the John Ford family for four years and Papa Joe's Restaurant for four years.
Survivors include a son, Byron L. Johnson of Wabash; daughter Mrs. Donald (Joyce E.) Sparling of Wabash; two sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Elsie) Tyner of Wabash and Mrs. Cecil (Carrie) Oswalt of New Haven; and four grandchildren. A sister and two broth-ers preceded her in death.
Friends may call at Manchester Ave. Chapel Grandstaff-Hengen from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 31, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Melissa Rice officiating. Burial will be in Mississinewa Memorial Ceme-tery, Somerset.
Former Manchester Resident Succumbs To Cancer
Michael Eugene Snyder, 60, of 7333 N. Tuxedo, Indianapolis, IN 46240, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996 at Community North Hospital, Indianapolis, IN. He was born May 25, 1936 at Fort Wayne, IN to Eldon E. and Catherine E. (Yeager) Snyder, both of North Manchester.
Mr. Snyder had been an Indianapolis resident since 1990, previously of North Manchester. He was a manufacturer's representative for R. Young Associates, Indianapolis, since 1988. He was formerly employed at Bender Funeral Home in North Manchester from 1961 to 1969 when he became owner, and owned the funeral home until 1985. He was a 1954 graduate of Central High School, North Manchester, Attended Manchester College, and graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1956. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.
He was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren, Deming Lodge #88 F&AM North Manchester, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne, and the Mizpah Temple of Ft. Wayne.
He was Past President of the North Manchester Rotary Club, Past President of the Eel River Shrine Club of North Manchester, Past President of North Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Past President of the North Manchester Economic Development Commission, Past President of Peabody Home Foundation, and former member of the North Manchester Library Board.
Mr. Snyder was 1975 North Manchester Citizen of the Year; was secretary-treasurer of Wabash County March of Dimes Walk-a-thon for many years. He was involved in the Wabash County and North Manchester United Fund programs for many years.
He married Judy Fleetwood Stephens Feb. 9, 1990 in Indianapolis, and she survives at Indianapolis; other survivors include his parents, E. Eugene and Catherine E. Snyder of North Manchester; a son, Mathew Alan Snyder of Indianapolis; a daugh-ter, Mrs. Vern (Betsy) Miller of Jacksonville, FL; a stepson, Christopher Stephens, at home; a brother, Patrick R. Snyder; and three grandchildren - Alexis, Maddie and Mitch Snyder of Indianapolis.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 3, 1997 at Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, with the Rev. David L. Rogers officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society.
Tobie Prater
Fellowship Food Pantry Chairman Dies At Fort Wayne
Tobie Prater, 51, of Liberty Mills, IN, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997 at St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne. He was born June 3, 1945 at LaPorte, IN to Asberry and Nazzie (Bailey) Prater, both deceased. He married Susan Clevenger June 29, 1963, And she survives.
Mr. Prater was employed at Peabody Seating Company until he was disabled in 1976.
He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church, where he served as past chairman of the board. He was actively involved in the Fellowship Food Pantry. He was a representative on the Fellowship of Churches, and was active in Crop Walk as Area 5 Representative.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Mrs. James (Dee Dee) Elder of Pierceton, Mrs. Terry (Sharon) West of North Manchester, and Mrs. David (Tammy) Scribner of Roanoke; brothers Leonard Prater and Stacey Prater, both of Athens, Alabama; and sisters, Mrs. Paul (Rosalie) Blanton, Ms. Shirley Hughes and Mrs. Lonnie (Rachel) Harmon, all of North Manchester; and four grandchildren. One brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday (today) Jan. 8, 1997 at the Christian Fellowship Church with Jon Gidley officiating. Burial was in Swank Cemetery, North Manchester.
Preferred memorials are to the Fellowship Food Pantry. DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Gail R. Heeter
Gail Richard Heeter, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas, was born Nov. 28, 1916 in Pierceton, Indiana, the son of Roy and Blanche (Shorb) Heeter. He de-parted this life Thursday, Jan-uary 2, 1997 in his home at the age of 80.
Mr. Heeter was a truck driver for Consolidated Freights. He served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II and he attended the Freeman Heights Baptist Church in Berryville.
On April 5, 1947, he was united in marriage with Helen L. Brubaker who survives him at his home. He is also survived by one sister, Eileen J. Krieder of Huntington, Indiana; a niece, Sally of Huntington, IN; and a nephew, Bill Krieder of Goshen, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents. Roy and Blanche Heeter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at Nelson's Chapel in Berryville with Rev. Scott Cox officiating. Interment was in the Berryville Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service. Memorial donations may be made to the Freeman Heights Baptist Church Building Fund, W. Freeman St., Berryville, Arkansas 72616.
Mary L. England
Mary L. England, 78, of 5903 W. Old 24, Wabash, IN, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 at 409 W. Cathryn, Milford, IN in Kosciusko County. She was born Dec. 6, 1918 at Anderson, IN to Cletus and Vera (Cross) Fox. After her father's death, her mother married Russell L. Mey-ers.
Mary was married to Walter J. England Aug. 7, 1936 and he preceded her in death.
She was employed for 15 years at USG Corporation. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Wabash.
She is survived by sons Terrence L. England of Wabash and Russell E. England of Milford, IN; a daughter, Mrs. James (Alice) Weber of Indianapolis; and a brother, Russell (Bud) Meyers of Wabash; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held today (Wednesday, Jan. 8) at Falls Cemetery with Elder Russ Graf officiating.
Eddingfield-DeLaughter Mortuary, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Betty Hathaway
Betty E. Hathaway, 74, of Angola, IN, died Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 at Sacred Heart Home, Avilla, IN. She was born in Wabash County, IN Nov. 1, 1922 to Paul and Oma (Fisher) Hathaway, both deceased.
She was a 1940 graduate of Central High School, North Manchester; she attended and graduated from Indiana University in 1944. She taught fifth grade elementary for two years, then went to Indiana University Medical School and graduated in 1952. She was named to Alpha Omega Alpha, which was an Honorary Medical Fraternity.
Dr. Hathaway served her residency in Radiology at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Later, she was given the Naval Rank of Captain of the U.S. Public Health Service; she was then the Chief of diagnostic X-Ray at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. After that, she was an advocate for medical patients.
Survivors include brothers, Max Hathaway of Indianapolis and Ted Hathaway of Merrillville; and a sister, Shirley (Hathaway) Glade of North Manchester.
Friends may call at Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9th. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home Friday, Jan. 10, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Patricia Helman officiating. Burial will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Steuben County Humane Society.
Mikel L. Lancaster
Mikel L. Lancaster, 41, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he had been a patient since Dec. 30, 1996. He was born May 26, 1955 in Wabash County, a son of Merritt "Curley" and Margaret (Baublit) Lancaster. His formative years were spent in South Whitley, where he graduated from Whitko High School in 1974.
After completing his education, he started his employment with the Whitley Manufacturing Company of South Whitley, where he served as a group leader in the roof department.
On May 19, 1979, he was united in marriage to Debra S. Smith and they have always made their home in the Sidney area. His church affiliation was with the South Whitley Church of the Brethren. He was an avid fisherman and horseshoe pitcher.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Debra; a daughter, Ashley Margaret Lancaster, at home; his father, Curley Lancaster and step mother, Barbara Lancaster of South Whitley; a sister, Patti Michaels, North Manchester; a step sister, Pam Bradley of Beulah, MI; two step brothers, Randy Holler and Brett Holler, both of South Whitley. His mother, Margaret, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Smith and Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley, with the Rev. Mark J. Flora Swick, pastor of the Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, officiating. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the educational fund for Ashley Lancaster.
Orville Ellis
Orville Ellis, 92, a former Akron, IN resident whose residence was at 2110 Gilford, Huntington, IN, died at the Norwood Nursing Center of Huntington Saturday evening, Jan. 4, 1997. He had spent most of his adult life as a farmer on the home place near Akron.
He was born Aug. 23, 1904 in LaGrange County, IN to Edward and Nora (Greenawalt) Ellis. He married Doris Keesey Jan. 24, 1926 and she died Aug. 26, 1967. He married Grethel Reed in February, 1968, and she died May 1, 1989. His surviving third wife is Evelyn (Bonewitz) Ellis of Huntington.
Mr. Ellis was a farmer and was a member of the original Akron Jonah Club which began in 1936. He was a member of the Akron Church of God, where he had served on the Board of Direc-tors, was active in the choir and as a Sunday School teacher. He also served as song leader, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of the Gideons for 27 years, and a long time active member of the Farm Bureau.
In addition to his wife Evelyn, he is survived by three daughters - Marcile Becker of North Manchester, Mrs. John (Donna) Spencer of Cicero, IN and Mrs. Harold (Janice) Shewman of Akron; 12 grandchildren, including Peg Wieland and Don Becker of North Manchester; 19 great grandchildren, including Heather, Kyle, Heidi and Kasha Wieland of North Manchester; and two great-great grandchildren; 11 step children and several step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Wagoner; a brother, Clair Ellis; two infant brothers; a son-in-law, Fred Becker; and a step son.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997) at the Akron Church of God with Pastors James Malbone and Terry Canfield officiating. Burial was in Athens Cemetery, Athens, IN.
Hartzler Funeral Home of Akron, IN was in charge of arrangements. Preferred contributions may be made to Gideons International and/or the Akron Church of God.
Tony Marcum
Tony Marcum, 16, of 21 EMS B 49, Warsaw, IN died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997 at Wabash County Hospital, the result of an auto accident. He was born March 14, 1980 at Wabash, IN to Tony and Tina (Ward) Marcum.
He was employed at McDonald's in Warsaw. He attended the Wawasee Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed competing in the Kosciusko 4-H demolition derby tournament.
He is survived by his father of Warsaw; his mother Tina of North Manchester; his maternal grandmother Cleditha Allen of North Manchester, and his maternal grandfather, John Davis of Silver Lake; half brothers Kenny Marcum, Michael Hackworth And Thomas Marcum, all of North Manchester; half sisters Lisa Marcum of Tennessee, and Kinda Hackworth and Jennifer Daisy, both of North Manchester; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother.
Funeral service was held Monday, January 6, 1997 at Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, which was in charge of arrangements. Pastor J. P. Freeman officiated, and burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester.
Ruth E. Marks
Ruth Elean Marks, 75, of 408 W. Main St., Wabash, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 at Parkview Memorial Hospital of Fort Wayne. She had lived at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester since September, 1996. She was born May 7, 1921 in Wabash to Joseph and Emma (Meredith) King, both deceased.
Mrs. Marks was married to LaMoine Marks in 1971 in Wabash, and he died February 1996. She retired from General Tire & Rubber Co. in 1982 and also worked in and managed local restaurants. She was a member of Wabash Bachelor Creek Church of Christ, and the Wabash American Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. Marks is survived by a daughter, Susan Moke of Bloomington, IN; a step daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Booth of Homer, IN; brothers Frank King of Wabash and James King of Newark, OH, Don Flynn of Wabash and Ron Flynn of Urbana; sisters Mrs. John (Hazel) Butler of Indianapolis and Mrs. Rex (Ann) Meyer of Wabash; and two step grandchildren. Three brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral arrangements were by Main St. Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, and services were held Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 with Rev. John Leinbaugh officiating. Burial was in the Friends Cemetery of Wabash.
Charles C. Luther
Charles Christian Luther, 89, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997 at Timbercrest Home in North Manchester. He was born July 27, 1907 in Champaign County, IL, son of John William and Emily (Webster) Luther. He moved with his family to a farm in Union Township, Whitley County, Indiana, at the age of three. He attended school in Coesse and graduated from Coesse High School in 1925.
He received his A.B. degree from Indiana University, and began a teaching career at his home school in Coesse where he taught math and science. In 1941, he received a B.S. degree from Purdue University, and then taught vocational agriculture at Jefferson Center High School for the major portion of his teaching career. He also served as a 4-H leader at Jefferson Center.
He taught math and science at Columbia City Joint High School from 1958-1959, then transferred to Woodlan High in East Allen County School system where he taught until 1967; he retired after 30 years teaching.
He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a major.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Brandon June 7, 1941 in Churubusco. They made their home on a Jefferson Township farm in Whitley County for 35 years before moving to Timbercrest Retirement Home in September, 1989.
He was a member of Laud Christian Church, the Columbia City Masonic Lodge #189 F & AM, Huntington York Rite, Indiana State and Wabash County Retired Teachers Associations. His interests included conservation, planting trees and wild life habitat. He served on the Board of Supervisors for the Whitley County Soil and Conservation District for several terms. He also raised registered American Saddle Horses and won awards in the State Horse Shows in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Charles C. Luther Jr. of Fort Wayne and William Brandon Luther of Springfield, OH; three granddaughters; a step grandson; two great grandsons; a brother Stuart Luther and a sister, Gladys Luther, both of Columbia City. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Luther and Ralph Luther.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997 at Smith and Sons Funeral Home of Columbia City with Rev. James A. Clifford, pastor of Laud Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in South Park Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be made to Laud Christian Church.
