Mary Ruth Butterbaugh
Mary Ruth (Dilling) Butterbaugh, 88, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester. She was born Aug. 3, 1910 at North Manchester to John and Fannie (Brookins) Henricks. She married H. Wayne Dilling in 1935 at North Manchester. He died May 30, 1955. She then married Paul R. Butterbaugh Aug. 4, 1962 in North Manchester, and he died April 14, 1978.
A lifetime North Manchester resident, she was a 1928 graduate of Central High School in North Manchester, and a 1933 graduate of Manchester College where she received a B.A. degree. She taught third grade for eight years in Urbana and 12 years at Laketon Elementary School. She was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by two sons - Wendell L. Dilling of Midland, MI and Roger L. Dilling of New York, NY; three granddaughters - Robin S. Vatalaro of Grosse Pointe, MI, and Anne-Marie Dilling and Alison Sue Dilling, both of New York, NY. She was preceded in death by three half sisters and a half brother.
Funeral service took place today, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Peabody Chapel, Peabody Retirement Community, with Pastors Susan Boyer and Christen Miller-Rieman officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery of North Manchester.
Preferred memorials may be made to Peabody Foundation. Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Diann Carroll
Diann Carroll, 43, of 9637W 1200N 35 South Whitley, IN, died suddenly of an aneurysm of the brain at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born July 16, 1955 in Whitley County to Gale and Inez (Plattner) Sickafoose. She married Joe Carroll Nov. 25, 1982 in Whitley County.
She was co-owner of Joe & Diann Farms, where she was engaged in farming.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; her parents, Gale and Inez Sickafoose; and two brothers, Steven and Stan Sickafoose, all of Whitley County.
Funeral service was held today, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Huntington Chapel, Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder, 338 E. Washington St., Huntington, IN.

Irene E. Yocum Layman
Irene E. Yocum Layman, 78, of 7132W 1000N Lot 10, Roann, IN, died Thursday, March 11, 1999 at 1921 Highway 231, Cottondale, FL. She was born Feb. 13, 1921 in Whitley County, IN to Walter and Grace (Howenstine) Ruch. She married Melvin J. Yocum Aug. 18, 1940 near Roann, IN; he died Sept. 11, 1994. She then married Paul Layman Sept. 26, 1998 in Miami County, IN. She was a graduate of Clear Creek Twp. High School in Huntington County. For many years, she co-owned and operated, with her husband, Melvin, the Yocum Machine Works in Roann. She was a member of the Olive Branch Church of God and a former member of the Roann United Methodist Church for 50 years.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Layman of Roann; a daughter, Patricia Kennedy of Jasper, TN; two sons - Donald Yocum of Roann and Dale Yocum of Mentone; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and five step grandchildren.
Funeral service was held today, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at the Olive Branch Church of God, of rural Roann in Miami County. The Revs. Lowell Burrus and Lawrence See officiated for the service and burial at Roann Community Cemetery.

Mildred M. Steele
Mildred M. Steele, 85, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, died Thursday, March 11, 1999 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. She was born Dec. 3, 1913 at Camden, IN to Raymond and Dorothy (Giles) Fross. She married Earl E. Eis in Delphi, IN in 1935; he died Nov. 28, 1968. She then married Darius Steele in North Manchester on May 1984, and he died in October 1985.
She was a member of the West Manchester Church of the Brethren, and a member of Cheer, Inc. in Wabash County. She was a former member of Manchester Shepherd Center.
She served as a dietitian at Timber crest for 14 years prior to her retirement in 1980. She has been a North Manchester resident since 1966, and a Timbercrest residence since July 1990.
Survivors include a son, David R. Eis of Goshen, IN; two daughters - Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Cree of Evansville, IN and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Harris of North Manchester; a half sister, Marie Caldwell of Indianapolis; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. A daughter and a brother preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Timbercrest Chapel with Rev. Byron Miller officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester.
Preferred memorials are to the Orville Sherman Memorial Fund at Timbercrest Church of the Brethren Home. Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
George A. Smith
George A. Smith, 64, of 64 Washington St., P.O. Box 11, Urbana, IN, died Thursday, March 11, 1999 at his residence. He was born Apr. 24, 1934 at Peru, IN to Carl and Mary Frances (Slaybaugh) Smith. He married Pam Shaffer in Wabash on Feb. 27, 1993. He was a member of the Wabash Calvary Chapel and a 1952 graduate of Gilead High School in Miami County.
Mr. Smith retired from the Wabash General Tire Co. in 1979 after 26 years, and from Cyclone Manufacturing Co. in Urbana in 1995 after 29 years. He had also worked at the Wabash Wal-Mart. He was an Army Veteran during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Pam of Urbana; a son, Scott Smith of Wabash; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Lisa) Coldren of Wabash; a stepson, Scott Conner of Wabash and a stepdaughter, Stacy Conner of Urbana; a sister, Mrs. Ron (Karen) Ember of Findlay, OH; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren and four step grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Sunday, March 14, 1999 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, with Pastor Stephen Eckart officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawns Cemetery of Wabash.
Preferred memorials are to Wabash County Cancer Society. Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Betty Ann Custer
Betty Ann Custer, 77, of 2276N 200W, Wabash, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. She was born May 15, 1921 to Fred and Ruth (McKinley Pullen, both deceased. She married Merle Custer in Wabash on Dec. 17, 1941.
She was a member of the Wabash Friends Church, the United Society of Friends Women, a former member of the Wabash County Extension Committee, and was an avid gardener. She was also involved in Wabash County 4-H for many years.
Survivors include her husband Merle of Wabash; three daughters - Melanie Weisman of Houston, TX, Karen Custer-Thurston of Flagstaff, AZ, and Lisa McClure of Wabash; two sons - Kim Custer of Long Beach, CA and Lane Custer of West Lafayette, IN; a sister, Becky Kerr of Wabash; a brother, Jon Paul Pullen of Oklahoma city, OK; her stepmother, Opal Pullen of Lincolnville, IN; six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. A brother preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Saturday, March 13, 1999 at the Wabash Friends Church with David Phillips officiating. Burial was in Friends Cemetery of Wabash.

Oma M. Briner
Oma M. Briner, 89, of Lagrange, IN, and formerly of Bluffton, IN, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Markle Health Care. She was a victim of Alzheimers disease and had been ailing the past four years. She was born September 21, 1909 at Lagrange, IN to Frank and Sophrona (Nickel) Greenawalt.
She married Corvin Briner March 17, 1934 at North Manchester; he died Dec. 22, 1970. Her second marriage was to Lee Wittwer on Nov. 26, 1983, and he died Feb. 5, 1990.
A resident of Lagrange County most of her life, she graduated from Lagrange High School, and was a 1931 graduate of Manchester College. She taught music in the Lagrange County School system after college. She was retired in 1970 after 25 years as secretary for Briner Building Co. of Bluffton. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons - Joe Briner of Uniondale and Jerry Briner of Fort Wayne; a daughter Mrs. Albert (Janice) Head of Gold Canyon, AZ; a stepson, Larry Wittwer of Bluffton and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Kim (Karen) Griffin of Forest, VA; a brother, Ben Greenawalt of Lagrange, IN., seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Friends may call today (Wednesday, March 17, 1999) at Thoma/Rich, Hewitt & Chaney Funeral Home of Bluffton, IN from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 18, 1999 at the funeral home with the Rev. William Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Helen M. Morton
Helen M. Morton, 61, of Anderson, died Sunday, March 14, 1999 at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Wabash County July 27, 1937, and lived in Anderson since 1964, moving there from Evansville. At one time she worked as a registered nurse in pediatrics at Community Hospital and Turtle Creek Convalescent Center in Anderson.
She was a graduate of Chester Township High School in Wabash County, and a graduate of nursing school from Parkview Hospital and Purdue University in Fort Wayne. She enjoyed gardening and canning food, garage sales and had a special love for animals. Along with raising her family, she also enjoyed traveling on family vacations.
Survivors include her husband of 42 years, C. Victor Morton; a son and daughter-in-law, Randall W. and Diane L. (Zirklebach) Morton of Anderson; daughter and son-in-law, Lori A. (Morton) and Jack Lewis of Anderson; grandchildren, Alisha M. Morton and Sarah R. Morton, both of Anderson; step-grandson, Wes O. Scharnowske, Anderson; brothers and spouses, Walter J. Penrod (wife, Mary Janet) and John Penrod (wife, Alyce), all of North Manchester, IN; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today (Wednesday) at the Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home from 3 to 8 p.m. Services will be held Thursday, March 18, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Kathy Otis and Bob Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Lola J. Elliott
Lola Jeanette Elliott, 96, of 2790 Mark Ridge, Reno, NV 89509, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at Life Care Center of Reno, NV. She was born Aug. 31, 1902 at Wabash, IN to Lea Jeffries and Rose Dunbar. She married John Raymond Elliott May 14, 1933 in Chicago; he died July 13, 1993.
The entire obituary was printed in March 10, 1999 publication of the News-Journal, but arrangements were incomplete regarding local services. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 6, 1999 at the University Chapel of the International Community of Christ Church in Reno. burial will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester funeral service will be held Friday, March 19, 1999 at Peabody Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Rev. Rebecca Willis will be the officiating clergy. Burial will take place at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Floren J. Kreider
Floren J."Shorty" Kreider, 92, a retired Cleveland Township, Whitley County farmer, died Monday, March 15, 1999 at Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia City. He was born Sept. 16, 1906 in Cleveland Township, a son of Noah and Oma (Klutz) Kreider. He spent his lifetime in Cleveland Township and completed his education at the Reelhorn School
He married Bernice L. Aldridge March 14, 1934, and they made their home on 1000 South since 1940. She preceded him in death May 8, 1991. He was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren.
In addition to general farming, he was a bus driver for Cleveland Township for 16 years until 1950, and assisted in the mowing of South Whitley Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters - Mrs. Carl (Beverly) Schmidt of Fort Wayne, Judy L. Kreider of South Whitley and Mrs. Dennis (Diann) Krider of Loon Lake; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Stewart of Toledo, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joe Kreider and a sister, Katherine Hanley.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 19, 1999 at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Rev. Gale Burkholder, pastor of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Nora Jean Miller
Nora Jean Miller, 86, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, and formerly of Smithville, OH, died Monday, March 23, 1998 at Wabash Skilled Care Center, Wabash, IN. She was born June 14, 1911 at West Alexander, PA to Isaac and Hortense (Hertig) Lawton. She married Dwight L. Miller Feb. 8, 1933 and he died July 10, 1975.
She is survived by three daughters - Mrs. Marlin (Lila) McCann and Mrs. Dale (Ann) McCauley, both of North Manchester, and Mrs. Larry (Marilyn) Weidenhamer of Sarasota, FL; a brother, William Lawton, of Lodi, OH and a half brother, Isaac Lawton of South Carolina; sisters Louise Conley of Wooster, OH and Kathryn Smedley of Smithville, OH; half sisters Mrs. Emerson (Rebecca) Stull of Wooster, OH and Mrs. Bill (Maloa) Palmer of Medina, OH; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
She was a member of North Manchester First Brethren Church, and its Hadassah Circle.
Friends may call Thursday, March 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary; also one hour prior to services Friday, March 27, 1998 at the Peabody Chapel, North Manchester, 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Ray Aspinall and Rev. Robert Schmeiser will officiate.

Lucille L. Colbert
Lucille L. "Joy" Colbert, 85, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community, died Saturday, March 21, 1998 at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester, IN. She was born in Huntington County, IN May 12, 1912 to Charles and Rose (Gross) Steerhoof. She married Delmar Colbert Aug. 4, 1934 and he died January 14, 1989.
Mrs. Colbert was a homemaker and seamstress for Kramer Cleaners, formerly of North Manchester. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Manchester, and was Past President of Lutheran Church Women.
Survivors include a son, Gregory Colbert of Three Rivers, MI; daughters, Mrs. James (Jeanne) Shanahan of Clinton Township, MI and Mrs. Johnny (Chiquitta) Boyles of Kingsport, TN; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A brother and four sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held this morning (Wednesday, March 25, 1998) at Peabody Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor Jeffrey Hawkins officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
