Jon P. Harris
Jon Philip Harris, 59, of 3 W. Canal St., Wabash, IN, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998 at his residence. He was born Sept. 26, 1938 in Wabash, IN to Kenneth and Helen (Halderman) Harris, both of whom are deceased.
He was a member of the Lagro American Legion, and was an Army veteran. He worked at General Tire in Wabash.
He is survived by two sons - Jeffrey L. Harris of Wabash and Brian Keith Harris of Elkhart; a daughter, Teresa Zimmerman of Wabash; two brothers - Jack Harris of Fontaine and Jerry Harris of Wabash; two sisters - Helen Jean Snyder and Marguerite Stouffer, both of Wabash; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, two brothers, and a sister.
Funeral service was held Saturday, April 4, 1998 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with Dr. Bill Moon officiating. Burial was in Falls Cemetery of Wabash.

Martha B. Miller
Martha B. Miller, 73, a resident of Millers Merry Manor West, Wabash, IN, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born January 4, 1925 in Wabash County to John and Lena (Drabenstot) Reed, both deceased.
She married Lewis H. Miller in August of 1945, and he preceded her in death May 11, 1976. She was employed as a cook at Rock City Cafe. She attended the Friends Church of Wabash.
She is survived by four sons - Larry Miller of Marion, IN, Jim Miller and Ron Miller, both of Fort Wayne, and Donnie Miller of Wabash; a daughter, Patti Spencer of Sweetser; and a sister, Mrs. John (Mary) Taylor of Wabash; nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. A son and a sister preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Saturday, April 4, 1998 at Eddingfield-DeLaughter Mortuary with the Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial was in Falls Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Friends Church Building Fund. Eddingfield-DeLaughter Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Max E. Slack
Max E. Slack, 66, of 407 Rivercove Lane, North Manchester, died Thursday, April 23, 1998 at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne. He was born Oct. 22, 1931 in Wabash County, IN to Earl and Florence (Miller) Slack. He married Beverly J. Schroll Sept. 18, 1954 in North Manchester.
He was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #286, both of North Manchester. He was an army veteran of the Korean War. He was a 1949 graduate of Laketon High School. He retired in 1990 from the North Manchester Post Office after 30 years. He then worked part time for seven years at the Stonehenge Golf Club in Warsaw. He was currently employed part time with Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne.
In addition to his wife, Beverly, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Stan (Jennifer) Dziabis of Columbia City; a son, Andy Slack of Campbell, CA; sisters Mrs. Mildred Salmon of Warsaw and Mrs. Phil (Carolyn) Enyeart of North Manchester; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.
Funeral service was held Sunday, April 26, 1998 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor J. P. Freeman officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester.
Preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association or to the Wabash County Cancer Society. Grandstaff-Hentgen, Bender Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth O. Leach
Ruth O. Leach, 84, of 1175 Manchester Ave., Wabash, IN died Friday, April 24, 1998 at her residence. She was born Sept. 16, 1913 in Wabash County to Albert and Amanda (Porter) Cook. She married Manual H. Leach in Wabash County on Aug. 9, 1932 and he died Jan. 23, 1997.
Mrs. Leach was co-owner, along with her husband, of Leach's Ice House in Wabash.
Survivors include two sons - Don Leach and Steve Leach, both of Wabash; a brother, Harold Cook of Lagro; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Two brothers and a grandchild preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, April 27 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel, Wabash, with Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawns. Preferred memorials are to Alzheimer's Association.

Alma J. Miller
Alma J. Miller, 74, of 1466 Garfield, Wabash, IN, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998 at Millers Merry Manor West, Wabash, IN. She was born July 6, 1923 at McDowell, KY to Fred and Loan (Hall) Stumbo, both deceased.
She married Donald Miller May 29, 1942 and he survives at Wabash, IN. She was employed at Honeywell for 25 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Wabash.
Additional survivors include two sons - Mick Miller of Roann, IN and Jack Miller of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held Friday, May 1, 1998, 1:00 p.m. at Eddingfield-DeLaughter Mortuary, Wabash, with Pastor James Engel officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memory Cemetery of Huntington County, IN.
Preferred memorials are to the Kidney Foundation.
Bertha Howard
Bertha (Granny) Howard, 94, of 9831 N 250 W, Laketon, IN, died at her residence Tuesday, April 14, 1998. She was born Aug. 29, 1903 at Salyersville, KY to Hatcher and Sinia (Whitaker) Allen. She was a homemaker, and married Fred Howard Dec. 31, 1923; he preceded her in death April 14, 1990. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church of Kosciusko County.
She is survived by four sons - Lawrence and Eddie, both of North Manchester, Mitchel of Wabash, and Wade of Anderson, IN; four daughters - Mrs. Earl (Opal) Meck of Warsaw, Oralee Gillend of Richmond, VA, Lula Owens of North Manchester, and Dorothy (Jeannie) Johnson of Laketon; a brother, Kindle Allen of North Manchester; 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 37 great-great grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. Three sons, a sister and two grandsons preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Friday, April 17, 1998 at the DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary of North Manchester, with the Rev. Chad Burkhart officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN.
Howard Wolf
Howard Wolf, 83, a resident of Millers Merry Manor East, Wabash, IN, died Sunday, April 19, 1998 at the Manor. He was born Sept. 15, 1914 in Wabash County to Louis and Cora (Pretorius) Wolf. He first married Mary E. Murphy Oct. 15, 1943 in Silver Lake. She died October 1961. He then married Virginia Hippensteel June 6, 1964 in North Manchester. She died Dec. 29, 1997.
He was a 1932 graduate of Urbana High School and attended Purdue University. He was a farmer, and drove Vice President Richard Nixon around the National Plowing Contest in 1954. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Urbana, the Urbana Lions Club, Hannah Lodge F&AM #61 of Wabash, Ivy Chapter #69 OES of North Manchester, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, and Wabash Shrine Club.
He is survived by two daughters - Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Krom of Noblesville, IN and Rebecca Zolott of San Diego, CA; a step son, David McHarry of Indianapolis; a sister, Janet Carmack of Sarasota, FL; and three grandchildren - Aaron and Amy Krom of Noblesville, IN and Sara Zolott of San Diego, CA.
Friends may call today (Wednesday) from 4 to 8 p.m. at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester. Funeral service will be held at the Bender Chapel Thursday, April 23, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Ken Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester.

Lester V. Ray
Lester V. Ray, 78, of 645 Washington St., Wabash, IN died Monday, April 20, 1998 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Nov. 2, 1919 at Wabash, IN to Frederick and Catherine Iva (Crousore) Ray, both deceased.
He was a member of Wabash Moose, Eagles, American Legion, and VFW. He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the Normandy Invasion. He retired in 1981 from Vice Brothers Foundry in Wabash.
He is survived by two sisters - Marian Dewart of Wabash and Virginia (Maxine) Sporleder of Schiller Park, IL. He was preceded by two brothers and a sister in death.
Friends may call at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel in Wabash today (Wednesday) from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Main St. Chapel Thursday, April 23, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Terry Canfield officiating. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery of Wabash.

LeRoy H. Young
LeRoy H. Young, 65, of 802 S. State Street, South Whitley, IN, died Sunday, April 19, 1998 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Sept. 8, 1932 at Servia, IN to Henry George and Sylvia Rose (Vandermark) Young, both deceased. He was married to Alonda F. Ford Nov. 2, 1958 in Wabash, IN; she survives. He was reared and spent his entire lifetime in the Wabash, North Manchester and South Whitley, IN Areas. He lived in South Whitley since 1981.
Mr. Young was a professional bricklayer during his career, working for Local #4 Indiana-Kentucky Bricklayer's Union. He spent most of his years working in northern Indiana. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean conflict from 1953-1955.
In addition to his wife, Alonda F. Young of South Whitley, he is survived by three daughters - Mrs. Scott (Melody M.) LaShelle of Savanna, IL, Mrs. Rickle (Tina A.) Moore of South Whitley, and Mrs. Kenneth (Lauralee R.) Bankston of Corpus Christi, TX; two sons - Dale D. Young of Jacksonville, FL and Rory L. (Yvette) Young of South Whitley; South Whitley granddaughters Melissa and Kristie Young, Christina and Jennifer Moore, and Korissa O'Neil; Corpus Christi, TX granddaughters Brittany and Tiffany Bankston; Savanna, IL grandsons Blake, Cody and Cameron LaShelle, South Whitley grandsons Christopher and Jason Moore; brothers Daniel and Henry Lawrence Young, both of South Bend, and Harold Young of Laketon; and sisters Sylvia Howard and Beulah Badskey of North Manchester, and Dora Fisher, a missionary in Australia. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Luther and Delbert Young, and a grandson, Michael D. Young.
Funeral service was held today (Wednesday), April 22, 1998 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Funeral Home of Columbia city, IN, with Pastor Jonathan Damon of First Baptist Church of So. Whitley officiating. Burial was in Servia Cemetery, Servia, IN.
Rev. Clarence R. Bowman
Rev. Clarence Rufus Bowman, 94, of 301 N. Second St., Bridgewater, VA. died Sunday, April 19, 1998 at the Bridgewater Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born Sept. 19, 1903 in Franklin County, VA, he was a son of the late Joseph Benjamin and Mary Susan (Barnhart) Bowman. He was the husband of Mary Idell (Cover) Bowman.
Rev. Bowman was graduated from Bridgewater College in 1929 and Bethany Biblical Seminary in 1932. After being ordained in the Church of the Brethren, he served congregations in Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California and Florida. He retired as a pastor in 1976 after 43 years of service and has been a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Beverly Ann Boyd of Sagertown, PA; two sons, Rev. Robert Cover Bowman of North Manchester, IN and Rev. John David Bowman of Lititz, PA and formerly of North Manchester; two sisters, Annie M. Heisey of Denver, PA and Essie C. Grossnickle, near Johnsville, MD; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, MD on Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. until departure for graveside services at Pipe Creek Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in the chapel of Bridgewater Home.
Preferred memorials are to the Memorial Fund of Bethany Theological Seminary, 615 National Rd. West, Richmond, IN 47374-4095, in his memory.
Florence Pittman
Florence Ida Pittman, 89, died Tuesday, April 14, at the Royal Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Terre Haute., IN. She formerly resided at Meridian Towers. She was born Feb. 9, 1909 near Patricksburg, in Owen County, IN to Preston and Burilla (Crabb) Newport. She was a 1926 graduate of Patricksburg High School. She worked in Indianapolis at Real Silk Hosiery Mill and Blocks Department Store before going to Brazil in 1934. She married Harry Pittman Feb. 13, 1937; he preceded her in death March 24, 1972.
She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Berea Christian Church, the William Oard Chapter of the DAR; the Brazil Chapter No. 80 OES; Clay County Hospital Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary Post 1126, and was active at the Brazil Senior Citizen Center.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law - Mrs. Bill (Mary) Earle of North Manchester; Mrs. Steve (Margaret) Crabb of Crawfordsville, and Jean Flak of Terre Haute; a daughter-in-law Carol Jean Pittman of Indianapolis; two sisters - Alice Kay of Highland, CA and Grace Hauser of Bowling Green, IN; and a brother, Kenneth Newport of Spencer, IN; 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son Kenneth Pittman who died Feb. 23, 1995.
Services were held Friday, April 17, 1998 at the French Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernie Rush officiating. Burial was in Clearview Cemetery.
Eugene Halvorson
Eugene A. (Bud) Halvorson, 82, a resident of Community Care Center, Wabash, died Friday, April 17, 1998 at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Sept. 3, 1915 at Menominee, WI to Harry and Bessie (Sprinks) Halvorson. He married Christine Olson in 1940; she died in 1979. His second marriage was to the former Bonnie Crist Nov. 20, 1990. He was Chief Personnel Director (retired) of the Downey IL VA Hospital. He was a member of Elks in Miles City, Montana, American Legion in Menominee, WI, Masonic Lodge and Shrine in Middleton, WIS. He was a graduate of Stout University in Menominee, and was a World War II Army veteran. He was raised by Helen and Ernie Halvorson, an aunt and uncle.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Wabash; a son, Gerald Halvorson of Avoca, MI; step son Dan Crist of New Bern, NC; step daughters, Diana Maloy of Kansas City, KS and Debbie Chenoweth of LaFontaine, IN; a half sister, Eileen Bleckner of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. A daughter, a brother and a half brother preceded him in death.
There are no visitation hours. Cremation and services took place at the Halvorson Cemetery in Menominee, WS. April 21, 1998.
