Clifford D. Cordes
Clifford D. Cordes, 72,. of 6738 N. Bowman Rd., Roann, IN, died Friday, May 15, 1998 at his residence in Roann. He was born Nov. 22, 1925 at Ulysses, NE to Herman Jacob and Frieda Augusta Hedwig Hinze Cordes, both deceased.
He married Marjorie E. Sack in Ulysses, NE on May 15, 1945, and she died Feb. 28, 1997. He was a retired dairy farmer, a member of the Roann Church of the Brethren, the Indiana Archaeological Society, and the Huntington County Indian Artifact Society.
Cliff and his wife, Marjorie, participated in an archaeological dig in Jerusalem in 1983. He was an associate supervisor for the Wabash County Soil & Water Conservation District, after serving as the supervisor for 23 years.
He is survived by two daughters - Mrs. John (Gail) Byrum of Twelve Mile, IN, and Mrs. Peggy Morris of Wabash; two sons, Clifton "Corky" Cordes and Kevin S. Cordes, both of Roann; two sisters, Dorothy Byam and Anita White, both of Ulysses, NE; 11 grandchildren and one great grandson. A brother and a sis-ter preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, May 18, 1998 at the Roann Church of the Brethren with Pastors Kurt Snyder and Bruce Hostetler officiating. Burial was in Roann Community Cemetery, Roann, IN.
Grandstaff-Hentgen Roann Chapel was in charge of ar-rangements, and preferred memorials are to the Church of the Brethren Disaster Response Program or Wabash Shalom Place (Foster Care Ministry).

Lois E. Hartsough Leasure
Lois Evelyn Hartsough Leasure, 77, died May 15, 1998 in her home in Rockbridge County, Virginia. She was born July 30, 1920, in Nappanee, IN, the daughter of the late Rev. Harvey Leroy and Clara (Culler) Hartsough.
She is survived by her hus-band of 57 years, Melvin Norris Leasure, currently of Rockbridge County. Her four children, James Lee Leasure, Glen Evan Leasure, Rita Jane Leasure, and Jo Ellen Parent, six grandchildren and two of her four sisters also survive.
Lois was a life long member of the Church of the Brethren, and her father was a minister of that faith for 40 years. Rev. Hartsough was minister of the Walnut Street Church of the Brethren in North Manchester for many years. Lois graduated from Central High School in North Manchester, and from Manchester College. She was an early elementary school teacher for 30 years and retired to Rockbridge County, Virginia, to be near her chil-dren and grandchildren in 1981.
After her retirement, Lois was the first coordinator of Literacy Volunteers of the Rockbridge Area from 1986 through 1990. She was an ideal person for the job because she truly wanted everyone to be able to read and was very ap-proachable and friendly.
A home burial was con-ducted near her home follow-ing her death. A memorial service will be held at the Quaker Meeting House in Lexington, VA, Saturday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m.

Harmon O. Stensel
Harmon Otto Stensel, 85, a former Cleveland Township farmer, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998 at Clark County Health Center in Owen, WI. He had moved to Wisconsin in 1996. He was born Feb. 28, 1913 in Whitley County, Indiana, a son of Otto and Nora (Vogt) Stensel. His formative years were spent in the Huntington County and Andrews areas.
On April 27, 1957 he married Ila L. Gradeless Miller. They always resided in the South Whitley area. Mrs. Stensel died in 1982.
He engaged in farming jointly with his brothers. Upon his retirement, he worked for Whitley Feeds and later Nutritional Research. He attended the Columbia City Wesleyan Church and Columbia City Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by a daugh-ter, Mrs. Lloyd (Nora) Engelberth of Greenwood, WI; a step daughter, Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Walters of Roanoke; a step son, Dean E. Miller of Columbia City; nine grandchildren; three great grand-sons; two brothers, Earl Stensel of Silver Lake and Ray Stensel of North Manchester; and a sis-ter, Grace Cullen of Tiffin, OH. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
The funeral service was held Saturday, May 16, 1998 at Smith and Sons Miller Chapel of South Whitley, with Pastor Harold Polk, pastor of Columbia City Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Andrews.

Frieda P. Krom
Frieda P. Krom, 95, a former Shriner Lake resident, died Monday in the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren.
She was born Oct. 31, 1902 in Whitley County, daughter of Charles and Iva Fisher Knoop. Her formative years were spent in the South Whitley and North Manchester communi-ties. She graduated from Chester Township High School.
On Aug. 18, 1921, she mar-ried Milo Oliver Krom and in 1936, they purchased a general store at the west end of Shriner Lake on SR 9. They operated the store until their retirement in 1966. Mr. Krom died March 27, 1981.
In 1989, Mrs. Krom moved to North Manchester, and for the past five years, she has resided at the home in Warren. Her church affilia-tion was with the St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, and she was a former member of the Thorncreek Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
The surviving relatives in-clude two daughters, Mrs. Everett (Louise) Jacoby Shull of North Manchester and Mrs. Gordon (Thelma) Smith of Warren; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchil-dren; and a sister, Ruby Powell, a resident at the Masonic Home in Franklin. A son, Lewis Krom, a daughter, Trischa Herron, and a brother, Paul Knoop, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held Friday, May 22, 2 p.m. in the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with the Rev. John Bellante officiat-ing. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery at Merriam.
Preferred memorials are to St. Matthew's United Methodist Church of the United Methodist Home.

Richard Workman
L. Richard "Dick" Workman, 64, of 1260E SR 13N, North Manchester, died Monday, May 26, 1997, at Miller's Merry Manor, Huntington, IN. He was born Oct. 3, 1932 in Wabash County to the late Martin Luther Workman and Mabel (Sommers) Workman, a resident of Timbercrest Church of the Brethren Home.
He married Peggy Baker in North Manchester June 8, 1952. He was a member of the North Manchester First Brethren Church. He was a Korean War Army Veteran and had lived most of his life in the North Manchester area.
Mr. Workman was employed in the maintenance department of Heckman Bindery, North Manchester, and had been a dispatcher for Pierceton Trucking Company of Laketon, IN for 10 years. He was a patrolman with the North Manchester Police Department from 1967-1970, and a volunteer fireman with Chester Township Fire Department for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Workman of North Manchester; his mother, Mabel Workman of North Manchester; sons Kent A. Workman of Peru and Kyle J. Workman of south Whitley; daughters Mrs. Stanley (Kathy) Singpiel and Mrs. William (Kim) McKenzie, both of North Manchester; a brother, Kenneth Workman of Auburn, IN; four sisters - Mrs. James (Bonnie) Lauer and Mrs. Richard (Janet) Miller, both of North Manchester, Mrs. Jerry (Jane) Murphy of Butler, IN and Mrs. Jim (Barbara) Krichbaum of Chelsea, MI; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel Wednesday (today) from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel Thursday, May 29, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Kurt Stout officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Wabash County Cancer Society, or the North Manchester First Brethren Church.

Mabel L. Burch
Mabel Lenora Burch, 86, of Miller's Merry Manor East, and formerly of SR 114W, North Manchester, died Friday, May 23, 1997 at Miller's. She was born Jan. 4, 1911 in Wabash County to Levi and Bertha (Oswalt) Milam. She married Vores Lester Burch July 4, 1933 in Columbia city; he preceded her in death May 23, 1996.
She was a 1929 graduate of Laketon High School, and in 1937 she and her husband started the Burch Shell Station located at the intersection of SR 15 and SR 114W. She also owned and operated the Corner Cupboard Restaurant adjacent to the Shell Station until retiring in 1974.
She was a member of the South Pleasant United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, was a Past Worthy Matron of Ivy Chapter of the Eastern Star, past district deputy of District 18 and past Grand Martha of the Indiana Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star, and past president of Indiana Business and Professional Women Inc.
Survivors include a son, Thomas L. Burch, North Manchester; a sister, Mrs. Homer (Caroline) Sampsel of Rochester; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Four brothers and a sister are deceased.
Services were held Monday, May 26, 1997 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service Bender Chapel, Rev. Kent Maxwell officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Portia I. Haupert
Portia I. Haupert, 91, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community, died Saturday, May 24, 1997 at Peabody Healthcare Center. She was formerly a resident at 1015 Erie Street in Wabash prior to moving to Peabody. She was born Dec. 6, 1905 in Wabash County to Frederick and Georgia O'Dessa (Owen) Johnson. She married Howard Haupert in Plymouth, IN July 25, 1934 and he died June 1950. Mrs. Haupert was a retired teacher, retiring in 1971 from Wabash High School where she taught 17 years. She also taught 15 years at McCulloch Jr. High in Marion, four years at Linlawn in Wabash and two years at Somerset in Wabash County.
She was a member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ in Wabash, the Dorcas Circle of the church, and the Wabash County Teachers association. She was a former member of the Latreian Club (a literary club), and the Wabash Women's Clubhouse Association. She was a graduate of Marion High School and Marion College, received her master's degree from Ball State University, and also attended Lewis & Clark College of Portland, OR and Indiana University.
Survivors include a son, William F. Haupert of Ovid, MI and a sister, Lola Soward of Escondido, CA; three grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. A sister and four brothers preceded her in death.
Graveside service and burial was held today (Wednesday), May 28 at Falls Cemetery of Wabash, with the Rev. Carl Hanser officiating.
Grandstaff-Hentgen Funer-al Service, Main Street Chapel, Wabash was in charge of arrangements.

Ray Hoover
Ray Hoover, 85, of 50 S. Main Street, Laketon, IN died Friday, May 23, 1997 at Community Care Center, Wabash. He was born Aug. 9, 1911 in Wabash County to George and Pearl (Butler) Hoover. He married Ella Haas Aug. 12, 1950 and she survives.
A retired farmer, Mr. Hoover was a member of the Laketon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ella of Laketon; a son, James R. Hutton of Wabash; a brother, Donald Hoover of Westland, MI; a sister, Lena Thomas of Bunker Hill, IN; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
Funeral service was held Monday, May 26, 1997 with the Rev. David Inskeep officiating. Burial was in Laketon Cemetery, Laketon, IN.

Susan E. Rife
Susan Elaine Rife, 44, of 545 E. Washington St., Lagro, IN died Thursday, May 22, 1997 at her residence. She was born June 5, 1952 at Wabash, IN to Theodore and Marilyn (Hileman) Schlemmer. She married Clyde Rife in Wabash Jan. 8, 1977.
She had worked at Wabash Magnetics in Huntington for three years, and was a member of the Lagro American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde Rife of Lagro; her parents Theodore and Marilyn Schlemmer of Wabash; a son, Roger Rife, of Wabash; daughters Mrs. William (Shelly) Davidson of North Manchester and Kelly Rife of Lagro; brothers Philip Schlemmer of Fort Wayne and Steven Schlemmer of Wabash; a sister, Charlotte Coburn of Wabash; and five grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Saturday, May 24, 1997 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with the Rev. Tony Thomas officiat-ing. Burial was in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash.
Preferred memorials are to the Wabash County Cancer Society.

Donald E. Yike
Donald Edward Yike, 81, of Roann, IN, died Saturday, May 25, 1996 at Millers Merry Manor East, Wabash. He was born Jan. 4, 1915 at Logansport, IN to Floyd and Lulu (Martindale) Yike.
He married Wanda Jean Courter in Wabash, April 23, 1950 and she preceded him in death Sept. 16, 1988. He was a retired rural mail carrier for the Roann Post Office. Prior to being the rural mail carrier he worked for General Tire in Wabash and the Mayer Grain Company in Roann. He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the 38th Infantry Division; he was a part of the Avengers of Bataan. He was a member of the Roann American Legion, Wabash American Legion, Wabash VFW, and the Peru Moose. He was a 1934 graduate of Roann High School, and was an avid fisherman, golfer, bowler, and pool player.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. David (Debbie) Williams of Roann, and a grandson. Three sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 29 at Roann Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, with the Rev. Lowell Burrus officiating. Burial was in Roann Community Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to Disabled American Veterans.

Janis S. Sutter
Janis S. Sutter, 59, of Huntington, died Thursday, May 23, 1996 in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born Sept. 29, 1936 in Hunting-ton, IN to Carl and Helen (Harvey) Clipp[. Her marriage was on July 8, 1955 in Middlebury, IN to Donald E. Sutter, who preceded her in death Dec. 8, 1994.
A 1954 graduate of Huntington High School, she was a member of the Central Christian Church in Huntington. She was special events coordinator for Homier Distributors Headquarters of Huntington.
Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Mitchell (Kendall) Overmyer of Fort Wayne, Mrs. DeWayne (Leslie) Wolf and Mrs. Tim (Heidi) Engleman both of Huntington; two sons: Donald E. Sutter Jr., of Claypool and Matthew C. Sutter of Akron; her father, Carl Clipp of Huntington; a sister, Mrs. Nelson (Rosemary) Schoeff of Huntington; seven grandchildren and two step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, with Rev. Cameron Douglas officiating.
Burial was in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association.
