Harold E. Jahnel
Harold E. Jahnel, 82, of 3 Peabody Dr., Peabody Community, North Man-chester, IN, died Friday, June 13, 1997 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. He was born July 30, 1914 at Lemmon, SD to Frank B. and Elizabeth E. (Rosenau) Jahnel. He married Mary E. Ellis Oct. 14, 1939 in Greene, Iowa, and she survives.
He graduated from Iowa State University in 1937, receiving a B.A. Degree in Business Administration. He was controller of the National Bank and Trust Co. in Sycamore, IL for several years, retiring in 1974. Harold had lived in North Manchester since 1991, coming from Beulah, MI.
In addition to his wife Mary E., survivors include a son, Martin E. Jahnel of Sycamore, IL; daughter, Mrs. Carl (Kathryn E.) Doran of Wabash; brother, Edgar B. Jahnel of Mina, S.D.; sisters Chrystal Madsen of Aberdeen, S.D. and Audrey Kanian of Minneapolis, MN; and four grandchildren. A son and a brother preceded him in death.
Anatomical donation will take place, and there is no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Caring Circle at Peabody Retirement Commu-nity.

Donna W. Pinney
Donna Winter Pinney, 63, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 16, 1997 at her home in Boyne City, MI after a brief illness. She was born May 20, 1934 to John and Anna (Ulrey) Winger in Kosciusko County, Indiana, and graduated from Sidney High School in 1952.
She attended Manchester College and graduated from Ball State University. She was a teacher in Atlanta, GA and Miami, FL.
On Aug. 28, 1954, she married Jack Pinney, who survives. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren.
Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Pam) Garman of Atlanta, GA; sons Dr. J. T. Pinney of Midland, MI and Dr. Chris Pinney of Schulenburg, TX; and eight grandchildren. Other survivors include three sisters - Mrs. Gail (Pauline) Bentz of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Robert (Leona) Leckrone and Mrs. Max (Mary Ellen) Armey, of North Manchester; and a brother, John Winger, Jr. of North Manchester.
Memorial Services will be held Thursday, June 19, at 11:00 a.m. at the Stackus Funeral Home of Boyne City, MI. Burial is at Boyne City.
Charles E. Dalton
Charles Eugene Dalton, 48, of 324 Alena St., Wabash, died June 15, 1997 at his residence. He was born Nov. 29, 1948 at Marion, OH to Monroe and Dorothy (Spradlin Sizemore) Dalton. He married Donna Brechbiel in Wabash on Nov. 5, 1971.
He was a member of Wabash Faith Baptist Church, and had worked at Diehl Machine Manufacturing and Graycon Tools, Inc., in Wabash.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, of Tomahawk, KY; daughters Teresa Ann Ward and Deborah Kay Dalton, both of Wabash; sons Michael, Philip, Tommie and Matthew Dalton, all of Wabash; sisters Alice Kay Butcher and Jessica Spence, both of Tomahawk, KY, and Charollette Preston of Boons-camp, KY; brothers, Herbert and James Sizemore, both of Wabash, Timothy Sizemore of Tomahawk, KY and Orville Glen Sizemore of Somerset, KY.
Funeral service was held today, Wednesday, June 18, 1997 at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel, with Pastor Danny Boone officiating. Burial was in Falls Cemetery, Wabash.
Arrangements were made by Grandstaff-Hentgen Manches-ter Ave. Chapel.
Frieda S. Freitag
Frieda Schipper Freitag, 97, of Cedar Falls, Iowa since 1991, and formerly of North Manchester, IN, died Jan. 31, 1997 at Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. She was born Oct. 20, 1899 at Enos, IN to Eilt and Antje (Janssen) Schipper.
She married Henry J. Freitag Dec. 12, 1920, and he preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Manchester College and completed studies at University of Illinois, Indiana University, the University of Iowa and North-western University. She was an elementary school teacher for 22 years in Indiana, Illinois, and Florida. An avid writer and poet, Mrs. Freitag published a collection of poems entitled, Fondly with Love. She was a member of St. John American Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Survivors include a son, Arnold J. Freitag of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were four brothers - Edward, Herman, Albert and Arnold Schipper, and three sisters - Anna Kampen, Annette Gaerte, and Grace Brown.
Graveside service will be held Saturday, June 21, 1997, at 10:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, with Pastor Jeffrey Hawkins officiating.
Memorials may be directed to St. John American Luth-eran Church Library or the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel.

Marjorie A. Souder
Marjorie A. Souder, 84, a former Columbia City area resident, died Thursday, June 12, 1997 at Peabody Retirement Center in North Manchester.
She was born Dec. 29, 1912 in Peru, IN to Howard D. and Neva (Loop) Strong. Her first home was on the family farm near Mentone. As a young girl, her family moved to Nebraska and after the death of her mother, she moved to Warsaw and made her home with her grandmother and step grandfather, Alice Loop and James Cretcher. She completed her education at Warsaw High School.
She was united in marriage Nov. 4, 1933 to Donald M. Souder who owned the East Side Market in Warsaw. After selling the store in 1934, they moved to Columbia City where they operated the William Miller Grocery Store. Later, Mrs. Souder managed a convenience store on North Walnut Street, across from the Marshall School. After closing their store, she worked for several years at the Three Sisters stores in Southgate Plaza and Northcrest Shopping Center in Fort Wayne. She retired in 1978.
In 1994, they moved to Peabody Retirement Commu-nity. Mr. Souder died Oct. 25, 1996. She was a mem-ber of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Dennis C. and Peter D. Souder, both residing in Ohio; two grandchildren, David Souder and Pamela Jo Manders; six great grandchildren and a brother, Elbert (Doc) Strong of Tucson, AZ.
The funeral arrangements were by Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, where service was held Saturday, June 14, 1997 with Chaplain Robert Schmeiser of Peabody Retirement Com-munity, officiating. Burial was in Union Township Cemetery, Coesse.
Lorena B. Lee
Lorena B. Lee, 77, of 844 Highland Dr., Vista, CA, died June 16, 1997 at her home. She was born Nov. 16, 1920 at North Manchester, IN to Alfred and Ruby (Rinehart) Steele, both deceased. She married Oscar C. Lee in 1937 and he died in August, 1983. She and her husband were co-owners of Lee's Iron & Metal for 37 years.
Survivors include sons and their wives - Jim and Kay Lee, Jack and Terry Lee, Joe and Barbara Lee, Jerry and Patti Lee, and Jeff and Joyce Lee, all of Vista, CA. A brother, Robert Steele and a sister Mrs. Lewis (LaDonna) Gale, both of North Manchester, also survive, as do 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Two sisters preceded her in death.
Memorial service will be held July 1, 1997 at the Vista Christian Fellowship where she was a member. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be in Fall Brook Cemetery, Fall Brook, CA. Preferred memorials are to the Leukemia Society of America.

Mary I. Gathany
Mary I. Gathany, 80, of 605 N. Mill Street, North Manchester, IN since 1994, and formerly of Warsaw, IN, died at her residence June 18, 1997. She was born April 11, 1917 in Genesee County, N.Y. to Irving S. and Grace (Church) Whipple, both deceased. She graduated from Oakfield (N.Y.) High School and Practical Bible College of Johnson City, N.Y.
A homemaker, she was married to R. Leo Gathany Oct. 29, 1939, and he survives, along with three sons - Paul H. Gathany of Cedarville, OH, James W. Gathany of Crown Point, IN, and Andrew L. Gathany of North Manchester; a daughter, Mrs. Doug (Deborah) Hardy of South Bend; a brother, Morell Whipple of Corfu, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Howard (Doris) Hester of State College, PA; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Friday, June 20, 1997 at the Faith Baptist Church of North Manchester, and burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Faith Baptist Church of North Manchester. DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Catherine L. Harman
Catherine L. Harman, 80, of Wabash, IN died at her residence in Wabash June 18, 1997. She was born July 10, 1916 at Peru, IN to Charles and Mary (Dice) Mills. She married Joseph Harman May 30, 1953 and he died July 1, 1978.
She retired in 1975 from Honeywell, Inc. in Wabash after 19 years. She was a member of the Wabash First United Methodist church, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose, both of Wabash.
She is survived by a sister, Helen Hettmansperger of Wabash. She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Graveside service was held Friday, June 20, 1997 at Falls Cemetery, Wabash, where burial took place; Dr. Bill Moon officiated.
Memorial contributions may be given to the First United Methodist Church of Wabash. Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Mary "Jean" Kissinger
Mary "Jean" Kissinger, 91, of 1201 N. Market St., North Manchester, died June 18, 1997 at The Oaks Living Center of Columbia City, IN. She was born June 16, 1906 in Wabash County to Marion Douglas and Leona Belle (Myers) Hubbard. She married Alton Levi Kissinger Nov. 29, 1930 in Angola, IN and he died April 29, 1984.
Mrs. Kissinger attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Butler University, and graduated from Manchester College. She taught high school Home Economics and Music for 30 years. She taught at LaFontaine, Beaver Dam, Silver Lake and Claypool, IN. She was a member of the Congregational Christian Church of North Manchester and the Retired Teachers Association of Indiana.
Survivors include a son, William D. Kissinger of North Manchester; daughters Barbara J. Stroh of Decatur, AL and Mrs. Arnold (Sheila) Kiefer of Fort Wayne, IN; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a grandchild.
Funeral service was held Friday, June 20, 1997 at Bender Chapel Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service with the Rev. Sue Hahn officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake, IN.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Christian Church of North Manchester.
Beulah I. Bowers
SOUTH WHITLEY - Beulah I. Bowers, 87, a Cleveland Township resident, died Thursday, June 19, 1997 at Renaissance Village at Dunfee. She was born Oct. 3, 1909 in Chester Township, Wabash County, to William I. And Caroline (Obringer) Burkhart.
She graduated from Bippus High School in 1927, then completed Huntington County Nurses Training School in 1930. She finished her nurse's degree at I.U. Medical Center. In 1938, she received a Public Health Degree from the University of Michigan. From 1930-1932, she was supervisor of obstetrics at Huntington County Memorial Hospital, then served as school nurse for Northern Wabash County for 10 years.
She married Merritt Bowers Aug. 30, 1941, and he died February 27, 1971. During their married life, they made their home in LaPorte, Walkerton and Harvey, IL where she was employed by the Cook County Department of Public Health. Since March, 1947, they made their home on the same farm west of South Whitley. She was a member of the Collamer Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Thomas (Pat) Bowers of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Larry (Linda) Bowers of South Whitley; two daughters, Mrs. Stan (Nellie) Duggins of South Whitley and Mrs. Paul (Marsha A.) Usher of Sweetser, IN; 10 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a sister, Evelyn Greer of North Manchester. A sister, Arthelia Wolfe and brothers, Calvin and Arnold Burkhart are deceased.
Funeral service was held Saturday, June 21, at Smith and Sons Miller Chapel of South Whitley, with the Rev. David Wagner, pastor of Collamer Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in South Whitley Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be made to Collamer Christian Church or the Whitley County EMS Medic 41.
Margaret E. Wilson
Margaret Evelyn Wilson, 80, of 801 Huntington Ave., Warren, IN, died June 18, 1997 at the United Methodist Memorial Home of Warren. She was born Nov. 7, 1916 at Fowlerton, IN to Garr and Bessie (Lewis) Wilson.
She graduated from Wabash High School in 1934 and from the Kansas City Deaconess Training School in 1940. She never married, but chose to become a licensed deaconess in the United Methodist Church in November 1941. She received a 50-year pin from the Board of Global Ministries in 1991. She served as a deaconess in the Deaconess Home and Settlement of Philadelphia, PA, Prospect Church of Bristol, Conn., Warsaw Methodist Church of Warsaw; First Church of Marion, Epworth-Euclid Methodist Church of Cleveland, OH; Wilmette Parish Methodist Church of Wilmette, IL, and the Emma Norton Residence of St. Paul, MN. She retired in 1978. She worked in Christian education and parish work at all the churches, and was executive director at the Emma Norton Residence.
She returned to Wabash and lived there from 1978 to 1992 when she moved to Warren. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Wabash.
She is survived by two sisters - Mrs. Clyde (Phyllis) Mittank and Mrs. Jim (Wilma) Guthrie, both of Wabash. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Preferred memorials are to Christ United Methodist Church. The Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Ethel Shull B. Meyer
Ethel Irene (Shull) Brubaker Meyer, 96, was born near Girard, Illinois, on November 19,1901. Her parents were William H. and Clara (Gibson) Shull. Ethel was the fifth child of their 10 children. Five of her siblings have preceded her in death. Still living are Cleda Zunkel, Ralph Shull, Arthur Shull, all of Timbercrest, and Ernest Shull of North Manchester.
Ethel grew up on a farm. Her father was a farmer preacher and Elder of several churches. As a child, Ethel's interest in art was being developed. She spent much of her time drawing and painting scenes. She graduated from Girard High School and attended Manchester College.
At Manchester College, Ethel majored in art and education. She was the Art Editor for the Aurora, and also worked as Assistant Matron and Superintendent of the College Dining Room. In her junior year, Ethel enrolled in an Illustrating Class with Mrs. A. W.Cordier as instructor. One of the projects assigned was to reproduce the picture, "God of the Open Air" two times larger than the original. Ethel spent hours on it and prized it more than anything else she ever did. Ethel's comment regarding the project, "...could use only the three primary colors, red, yellow, and blue. This meant I even had to paint the background color in ivory. 'God of the Open Air' has sky, water, trees, flowers, animals of all sorts, and the designs in it were intriguing. When I took it to Mrs. Cordier, she said , 'That puts me to shame.'"
After graduating in 1931, Ethel taught art in the Chester Township Schools. In the 1940s, she moved to Elgin, IL. She met Everett Brubaker there and they were married on January 1, 1944. Everett worked for Bobbs-Merrill Corporation, and Ethel taught at the Illinois Correctional School for Boys at St. Charles, IL. They were active in the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren.
Everett died on January 15, 1971. Shortly thereafter, Ethel moved to Timbercrest where she pursued her interest in art. Her paintings of the North Manchester covered bridge were so popular that as soon as she had one completed, someone would want it. She painted 14 covered bridge pictures. Five of her paintings are mounted on the walls of Timbercrest.
Ethel married Herman Meyer on July 12, 1980, after meeting him at Timbercrest. He had three children - Wendell Meyer of Midland, MI, Phil Meyer of Sparta, NJ, and Edie King of Findlay, OH. Herman died in 1986. In April 1997, Ethel became a permanent resident of Health Care. She died Saturday, June 13, 1998. One of her last gifts to society was the donation of her body to science.
A memorial service will be held in Timbercrest Chapel Monday, June 22, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Susan Boyer and Rev. Charles Lunkley will officiate. Preferred memorial gifts may be given to Timbercrest Church of the Brethren Retirement Home.
