Eleanor W. Helfin
Eleanor W. Helfin, 76, of 5510 S 300 E, Wabash, IN died July 21, 1997 at Millers Merry Manor East of Wabash. She was born May 30, 1921 at Alliance, OH to Harrold and Bessie Marie (Parr) Hodgkinson, both deceased. She married Paul Helfin in Barberton, OH Sept. 2, 1939 and he died Nov. 24, 1984.
Mrs. Helfin was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Peru, IN, Wabash County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, a longtime volunteer at C.H.E.E.R. and Thrift Shop, and was a former Girl Scout leader. She had lived in Wabash County since 1947 and was a homemaker.
She is survived by sons Jon Helfin of Wabash and Mark Helfin of Easton, PA; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Kathryn) Dennison of LaFontaine, IN; sisters Mrs. Earl (Jeanne) Brumbaugh of Green, OH, Mrs. Lester (Louise) Shaffer of Yuma, AZ, Mrs. Paul (Patricia) Shook of Greentown, OH, Laura Hodgkinson of Kennasaw, GA and Mrs. James (Kathryn) Long of Stow, OH; two brothers, Bruce Hodgkinson of Akron, OH and Michael Hodgkinson of Atwater, OH; and three grandchildren. A son preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, July 24, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel, Wabash, with Bishop Mark A. Waite officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash.
Preferred memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or National Kidney Foundation. Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Marcus D. Hackworth
Marcus D. Hackworth, 21, of PO Box 326, 11046E SR 14, Akron, IN, died July 17, 1997 due to an automobile accident which occurred at 925E & SR 14, Akron, IN. He was born May 28, 1976 at Rochester, IN to Duane and Janet (Sheetz) Hackworth.
A lifetime resident of the Akron Community, he was employed by Hackworth & Son Oil Co., Akron, IN. He was a member of the Akron United Methodist Church was a 1994 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a class car collector.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Hackworth of Akron; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Edith Sheetz of Akron; paternal grandparents, Oliver and Ora Lee Marsillett Hackworth of Warsaw; and aunts, Mrs. James (Barbara) Whitaker and Mrs. Rick (Becky) Whitaker, both of Warsaw.
Funeral service was held Saturday, July 19, 1997 at Foster & Good Funeral Home of Akron, with the Rev. Steve Flack and Rev. Doug Witt officiating. Burial was in Akron Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be made to the Henry Township Fire Department and/or the Akron United Methodist Church.
Roy G. Lancaster
Roy G. Lancaster, 81, of 11 Laurel Drive, North Manchester, and formerly of Bippus and Silver Lake, IN, died Saturday, July 26, 1997 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born at South Whitley, IN August 7, 1915 to Otis H. and Odie (Biddle) Lancaster.
He married Mary F. Huffman April 19, 1935, and she survives.
Mr. Lancaster was a carpenter and contractor, retired from Miller & Sons Lumber Co. of Silver Lake. He was a 1933 graduate of Bippus High School, a member of St. John's United Church of Christ of Bippus, a former member of the St. John's Cemetery Board and a former member of Bippus Lions Club.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Mary, are daughters, Mrs. Marion (Susan) Urschel of Bippus, Mrs. Ronald (Judith) Moeller of Columbia City, IN, and Mrs. Dan (Beth) Zile of Ozark, MO; a son, Ronald Lancaster of Huntsville, AL; sisters, Mrs. Fern Faust and Mrs. Howard (Alice) Fox, both of Fort Wayne; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. One grandchild, three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, July 28, 1997 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Bippus, IN, with the Rev. David Pinkham officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery at Bippus.

Samuel Lee Stephens
Samuel Lee Stephens, 61, of 301 N. Buffalo, North Manchester, IN died Saturday, July 26, 1997 at Parkview Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 3, 1935 at Lancaster, OH to Ora and Ruth (Kibbe) Stephens, both deceased. He married Rose Werstler, and she survives.
Mr. Stephens was a 1953 graduate of Wabash High School, and a 1957 graduate of Indiana University. He was a member of the Wabash Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and worked for John H. Stephens RLS Inc. in Wabash, IN.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David J. Stephens of Seattle, WA; a brother John H. Stephens of Wabash, IN; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel C. and Philip W. Stephens, a sister, Martha Jean Stephens, and a brother Charles W. Stephens.
Friends may call at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester on Wednesday (today) from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral will be held at the funeral home Thursday, July 31, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor J. P. Freeman officiating. Burial will take place in Falls Cemetery, Wabash, IN.
Preferred memorials are to Indiana University Cancer Fund.
Deanna T. Badger
Deanna T. Badger, 58, of 27 E. Ireland Dr., North Manchester, died Sunday, July 27, 1997 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Ft. Wayne. She was born April 27, 1939 at Rogers City, MI to the late Clarence Dietlin and Gladys (Trapp) Dietlin of Rogers City, MI. She was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Timbercrest Retirement Community.
Mrs. Badger is survived by two sons - Mark Badger of Minnesota, and Scott Badger of Ypsilanti, MI; a daughter, Kim Klee, Alpena, MI; brothers Donald Dietlin and Neil Dietlin, both of Alpena, MI; a sister, Susan Teske of Sault Ste. Marie, MI. One brother preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held Friday, August 8, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Alpena, MI.

Mildred C. Murphy
Mildred C. Murphy, 91, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, died Sunday, July 20, 1997 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. She was born Nov. 8, 1905 in Richland Twp., Miami County, IN to Lewis E. and Clara (Fisher) Fouts. She married Wayne W. Murphy, April 29, 1926, and he died June 6, 1981.
Mrs. Murphy was a graduate of Chili High and Manchester College. She started teaching at age 17 at Eastside School in Miami County; she also taught at Chili and Walton for a total of 24 years. She was a member of the Chili United Methodist Church, and Retired Teachers. She moved to Timbercrest Retirement Community in October, 1989, coming from Peru.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by two sons - Mark W. of Indianapolis and George A. of San Diego, CA; a sister, Marjorie Norman of North Manchester; three grandchildren - Mark Wayne Murphy II of Minneapolis, MN, Noble Murphy of Phoenix, AZ, and Jane Murphy Zeronik of Lafayette, IN; also two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, two sisters and a brother.
Funeral service was held today, Wednesday, July 30, 1997 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Roann Chapel with Deacon George Murphy and Chaplain Helen Beery officiating. Burial was in Chili Cemetery, Chili, IN.

E. Maurine Beery
E. Maurine Beery, 81, of 402 Rustic Lane, North Manchester, IN died Wednesday, July 23, 1997 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born Mar. 3, 1916 at South English, IA to Samuel E. and Estella (Hamer) Brower. She married Glen A. Beery August 19, 1939 in South English, IA.
Mrs. Beery graduated from South English High School, and Manchester College in 1938 with a B.S. Degree in Education, and from Ball State University in 1964 with a Masters Degree. She taught penmanship at Manchester College and Manchester Elementary Schools from 1936 to 1942. She taught in the elementary grades in Chester Township and Manchester Community Schools from 1952 until retiring in 1978.
She was a member of the North Manchester Woman's Club for 55 years. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma education sorority, and a former member of Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority. She held membership in the NEA, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, North Manchester Historical Society and State of Indiana Historical Society, and Shepherd's Center of North Manchester. She was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren and sang in the choir for 50 years. She also sang with the Manchester College Quartet during her years in college.
She is survived by her husband, Glen A. Beery of North Manchester; daughters Mrs. Bob (Joyce) Miles of Jacksonville, FL and Mrs. Thomas (Lois) Fulmer of Cincinnati, OH; sons Delbert A. Beery of North Manchester and Lynn E. Beery of Wabash; brothers Glen H. Brower of Van Nuys, CA and Vernon Brower of Okemos, MI; four step granddaughters and five step great-grandchildren. A brother preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Sunday, July 27, 1997 at the Manchester Church of the Brethren with Rev. Susan Boyer and Rev. David L. Rogers officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Servia.
Preferred memorial is to E. Maurine Beery Memorial Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Wabash County (P.O. Box 98, North Manchester, IN 46962) for the benefit of the music programs of the Manchester Church of the Brethren.

Emma A. Studer
Former North Manchester resident Emma A. Studer, 78, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997 where memorial service was held July 23, 1997 at Derby Friends Church, Derby KS. She had also previously resided at McMinnville, TN, Greenville, PA, and Ocala, FL.
She was born January 20, 1919 in Stonecreek, OH to Karl and Helen Miller. She married Vernon Studer and he preceded her in death, as did a son, William Liston.
Survivors include former Manchester resident, Dale Liston, now of Derby, KS; a step son, Robert Studer of Cleveland, OH; brothers Roland Miller of Virginia and William Miller of Dallas, TX, seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Interment was to be at Union Hill Cemetery in Sugar Creek, OH.

Helen L. Perry
Helen L. Perry, 68, of 1593 Garfield St., Wabash, IN, died July 26, 1997 at Wabash Skilled Care Center. She was born March 12, 1929 at Denver, IN to Grimes B. and Edna Mae (Dawalt) Derck, both deceased. She married Charles E. Perry Dec. 2, 1954 and he survives.
She had been employed at United Tech for 20 years.
Survivors in addition to her husband include a son, Ralph Perry of Wabash; brothers James Derck of LaFontaine, IN, Charles Derck of Glendale, Ar., and Robert Derck of Wabash; sisters Mrs. Max (Norma) Gaston of Urbana and Ms. Judy Johnson of Wabash; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral service was held today, Wednesday, July 30, 1997 at the Cathedral of Praise Church of God, of which she was a member. The Rev. James Hughes officiated and burial was in Friends Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be directed to the Cathedral of Praise Church of God. Eddingfield-DeLaughter Mortuary, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
Wilma T. Satchwill
Wilma T. Satchwill, 52, of 5288N 650E, Urbana, IN died July 24, 1997 at 650E 800N, Urbana, IN. She was born Oct. 5, 1944 at Howard County, IN to Tobias and Bertha (Gingerich) Miller, both deceased. She married Keith Satchwill in Converse, IN Aug. 20, 1978.
She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Steven Satchwill of Urbana; daughters Susan and Sara Satchwill, both of Urbana; step mother, Mary Miller of Kokomo; brothers Lester and Lloyd Miller of Kokomo; sisters Viola Miller of Kokomo, Martha Miller of Kalona, IA, Edna Schmucker of Goshen, IN; a half brother, Gene Miller of Kokomo; and three half sisters - Rachel, Esther and Rosanne Miller, all of Kokomo. One step sister preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, July 28, 1997 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Curry officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawns Cemetery of Wabash.
Helen J. Horner
Helen Josephine Horner, 82, of 643 Manchester Ave., Wabash, died July 25, 1997 at her residence. She was born March 4, 1915 in Huntington County, IN to Clarence Fremont and Mary Elizabeth (Lowrie) Garretson. She married Charles L. Horner in Wabash on March 14, 1970 and he died March 16, 1997. She was a dietary cook at Millers Merry Manor East in Wabash, retiring in 1986. She had lived in Wabash since 1960, coming from Huntington, IN.
Survivors include two daughters - Mrs. Dean (Kay) Eakright of Wabash and Mrs. Richard (Helen) Shanefelt of Andrews; three sons - Bobby Griffith of Covington, KY, Harold L. Griffith and Max E. Griffith, both of Andrews, IN; two stepsons - Charles E. Horner of Palatka, FL and James F. Horner of Henderson, NV; three sisters - Ruby Lannfert of Huntington, IN, Marjorie Cole of Marion, IN and Mrs. John (Patty) Herrick of Roanoke, IN; three brothers - Paul D. Garretson and Willard L. Garretson, both of Huntington, and Jack Garretson of Mishawaka, IN; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild. Five brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 29, 1997 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main St. Chapel, Wabash with Dr. Bill Moon officiating. Burial was in the Friends Cemetery of Wabash.
Ira Wilson
Ira Wilson, 100, of 6472 E. Division Road, Lagro, IN, died at his residence Tuesday, July 22, 1997. He was born Dec. 24, 1896 at Pulaski County, Indiana, to Absalom and Christine (Working) Wilson. He married Anna Story April 30, 1920, and she died March 2, 1985.
Ira was a life-long member of the Richvalley United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. He was a 50-year member of Hanna Masonic Lodge #61 F&AM of Wabash. He was a graduate of Chippewa High School.
A retired farmer, he was the last World War I Veteran in Wabash County. He enlisted in the Army in 1918, serving in Company A at Ft. Benjamin Harrison.
Survivors include three daughters - Dorothy McKenzie of Wabash, Clara Swan of Lagro, and Christine Deeter of Marion; two sons - Gene Wilson of Wabash and Don Wilson of Beaver Dam, WI; three brothers - Oscar Wilson of Champaign, IL, Junior Wilson of Rome City, IN and John Wilson of Wabash; 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister, and five brothers.
Friends may call at Grandstaff-Hentgen, Manchester Avenue Chapel, Wabash, from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 24. A Masonic Service will be held Thursday evening., 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held Friday morning, July 25, 1997, at 10:30 a.m. at the Richvalley United Methodist Church at Richvalley, IN with the Rev. Bruce Mowery officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, Wabash.
