Mildred Jane DeArmond
Mildred Jane DeArmond, 88, of 815 Crosspointe Ct., Wabash, IN, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born Feb. 21, 1913 in Wabash County to Frank and Mary (Hutchens) Stouffer. She first married Robert D. Smith; he died Feb. 19, 1950. She then married James L. "Whitey" DeArmond in Wabash, IN on March 29, 1952; he died May 7, 1999.
She was a member of the Wabash Friends Church. She was a receptionist for her husband Robert D. Smith, Attorney at Law, and was a receptionist for Dr. Black in Wabash.
She is survived by nieces Barbara Welborn of North Manchester, Mrs. Max (Jane) Updike of Wolcotville, IN and Bernadine Miller of Fort Wayne. A sister preceded her in death.
Burial will take place in the Falls Cemetery of Wabash. Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph H. Townsend
Ralph H. Townsend, 88, of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. He was born Feb. 3, 1914 in Woodland, MI to Otto and Kathryn (Oaks) Townsend, both deceased. He married Mildred F. Brumbaugh on March 21, 1942; she died Sept. 18, 1999.
Mr. Townsend was a member of the Woodgrove Christian Brethren Parish of Woodland, MI; he graduated from Woodland (MI) High School in 1932 and from Manchester College in 1936. He received his Masters Degree from Ohio State University. He was a contributor to many peace and environmental groups. He taught math and science at Lake Odessa (MI) High School and was a retired farmer.
He is survived by three sons - Philip of East Jordan, MI, Rodney of Breading, KY, and Melvin of Newville, WV; a daughter, Karen Mae of Larkspur, CA; a brother Garnet Townsend of Kalamazoo, MI; and four grandchildren. One brother preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Friday, February 8, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Timbercrest Chapel with Rev. Joan Deeter officiating. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery, Woodland, MI.
Preferred memorials are to Heifer Project International. DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, No. Manchester Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Marie E. Coe
Marie E. Coe, 100, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 at the Timbercrest Healthcare Center. She was born June 15, 1901 in Kosciusko County, IN to Ora and Rosa (Haines) Michael. She married Orman E. Coe December 1, 1920; he died December 16, 1989.
She was the oldest living alumnus of Sidney High School, having graduated in 1920. She managed a shoe store in Kalamazoo, MI in the early 1920's. She was owner/operator of Liberty Mills, IN General Store during the 1930s and 1940s. She was employed with Magnavox, Ft. Wayne, for 15 years, and retired from RBM, Bryons Mfg. Co. 1963.
Survivors include a son, Derwood (Diane) Coe of North Manchester; and grandchildren Dennis (Debra) Coe and Mrs. Brett (Dee) Patrick, both of North Manchester; and four great-grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death. She was a member of the Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren.
Funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Timbercrest chapel with Pastor Kelley Beutler officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
Preferred memorials are to Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana. DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Michael J. Bell
Michael James Bell, 52, of 4215E 500N, Urbana, IN, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 at Dukes Memorial Hospital of Peru, IN. He was born June 6, 1949 in Huntington County, IN to the late Leonard James Bell and Betty (Landrum) Bell of Hobe Sound, FL. He married Bridgette Gomez in Huntington, IN on January 28, 2000.
He worked for Chrysler Corporation of Kokomo since June 1999, and was a member of the U.A.W. Local 685, Kokomo, and Millwrights Local 1029, Fort Wayne, IN. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Shawn Bell of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Stacy Diane Bell of Warren, IN; a stepdaughter, Angelia Gomez of Fort Wayne; granddaughter Brooklyn Marie Bell of Fort Wayne; step grandchildren Austin Michael Gomez and Alysia Gomez, both of Fort Wayne; a sister Shirley Kingsley of Hobe Sound, FL and a brother Wayne E. Heitz of Port Salerno, FL.
Funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel.

Margaret E. Whitehead
Margaret E. Whitehead, 95, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community for the past seven years, and formerly of Warsaw, IN, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at Timbercrest. She was born Jan. 15, 1907 in Fairmount, IN to Cyrus M. and Caroline (Gemmer) Garner. She married Dale Whitehead June 1, 1929 at Pierceton, IN, and he preceded her in death in 1992.
She was a home maker and secretary for Whimet Inc., of Warsaw. She was an active member of the North Winona Church of the Brethren, Warsaw; Crossroads Home Economics Club of Warsaw; and she enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, journaling, and scrapbooking.
She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn Whitehead of Jamaica Plain, MA; three sons - Donald and wife Carole of Muncie, IN, Deverle and wife Mary of Grabill, IN, and Murvel and wife Mary Lou of Warsaw; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren; a sister, Josephine Likens of Sidney; and friend, Betty Jo Green of Jamaica Plain, MA. In addition to the death of her husband, Dale, a son, Norman Whitehead preceded her in death, but his wife Wanda survives at Warsaw.
Funeral service was held Monday morning, Feb. 11, 2002, at the North Winona Church of the Brethren, Warsaw, with Revs. Lester Young and Jim Davis officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw.
Titus Funeral Home of Warsaw was in charge of arrangements. Preferred memorials are to the Crestwood Unit, Timbercrest Retirement Community, PO Box 501, North Manchester 46962; or to North Winona Church of the Brethren, 2475 East CR 100 North, Warsaw, IN.

Betty M. Doud
Betty M. Doud, 83, of rural Roann, IN, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at her residence. She was born Oct. 11, 1918 in Medaryville, IN, (Pulaski County) to Elmer J. and Gladys (Ballard) Shortz. She married Lorne J. Doud June 30, 1945 in Medaryville.
She graduated from Medaryville High School in 1936, and from Manchester College in 1939. She taught at Roann High School from 1939 to 1942; at Linlawn High School in Wabash from 1942 to 1946, and also taught at Peru High School in the early 60's. She was a member of the Roann United Methodist Church. She was a life member of the Eastern Star first at Roann where she was a past worthy matron, and was a current member of the Ivy Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in North Manchester.
She was active in the ownership and operation of Doud Orchards in Miami County. She and her husband Lorne made four trips to Europe to study European fruit growing, mainly dwarf varieties.
Survivors include her husband, Loren of Wabash; two sons - Steven L. (Connie) and David S. (Valerie), all of Wabash; a daughter, Mrs. Greg (Diane S.) Miller of Carrollton, OH; a sister, Jo Ann Birdzell of Crown Point, IN, and a brother Elmer J. Shortz Jr. of Zionsville, IN; and grandchildren Emma and Theresa Doud and Michael Doud, all of Wabash, and Amy, Quinn, and Colin Miller, all of Carrollton, OH.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Roann Chapel with Rick Stone and Rev. Robert Armstrong officiating. Burial took place in the Chili Cemetery, located at Chili, IN.
Preferred memorials are to Roann United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service.

Raymond Lester Sr.
Raymond Lester Sr., 67, of Community Care Center, Wabash, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at the Care Center. He was born April 22, 1934 in Switzerland County, IN to Allan and Mary (Banks) Lester, both deceased. He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by a son, Raymond Lester Jr. of Peru; daughters Mrs. Larry (Mary) Ross of Lagro, Mrs. Bill (Linda) Noland, of Kokomo, and Mrs. Mike (Jamie) Molich of Wabash; brothers Howard Lester of Gas City and Larry Lester of Fort Wayne; and sister, Evelyn White of Marion; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester Chapel with Rev. Ralph Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Mississinewa Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

Kenneth L. Baublit
Kenneth L. Baublit, 86, of 10402 S. SR 15, Silver Lake, IN, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at Cambridge House of Warsaw, IN. He was born in South Whitley, IN to the late Virgil and Gertrude (Nine) Baublit. He married Violet (Weaver) Speigel on Sept. 24, 1968, and she survives.
He was a retired driver for Pierceton Trucking Co., of Laketon, IN after 30 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James Baublit of Peru; stepsons Larry Speigel of Warsaw, and James Speigel of Plymouth, IN; a daughter Dawn Kay Olsen of Brainard, MN; a half sister, Lucy Smith of Pierceton, IN; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a brother, a half sister, a half brother, and a step daughter.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary Silver Lake Chapel with Rev. Chad Burkhart officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery of Pierceton, IN.
Preferred memorials are to the American Lung Association, 100 Saw Mill Road, Lafayette, IN.

Curtis E. Whitmore
Curtis E. Whitmore, 45, of 12249N 400E, North Manchester, IN died Monday morning, Feb. 11, 2002 at his residence. He was born Oct. 20, 1956 at Quincy, IL to Albert L. and Dorothy (Fry) Whitmore, of 308 Hickory Lane, North Manchester.
He was a 1975 graduate from Manchester High School, and was a member of the Tri-State Engine & Tractor Association, Portland, IN. He was currently employed at Fox Products of South Whitley, IN. He had previously worked at Whitley Products, and for 20 years was employed with Bay State Abrasives at North Manchester.
Survivors include his parents; brothers Mack Whitmore of Chilton, WI and Dan Whitmore of Broadway, VA; and sisters Mrs. Richard (Marilyn) Jones of Polo, IL, Mrs. James (Anne) Hollinger of The Villages, FL, and Karen Sue Smith of North Manchester.
Friends may call at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary No. Manchester Chapel Thursday, Feb. 14, from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at the Mortuary with Pastor Susan Boyer officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

E. Blanche Metzger
E. Blanche Metzger, 96, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at Timbercrest Healthcare Center. She was born Dec. 14, 1905 at Whitley County, IN to John Amsa and Estie Mae ( Kreider) Snell. She married Jerome E. Metzger in Whitley County, IN on Nov. 28, 1926; he died Nov. 2, 1982.
She was a member of the Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren. She was a cook at the Peabody Retirement Community 24 years, retiring in 1979.
She is survived by two sons - Ronald E. (Wanda) Metzger of New Haven, IN and Dean L. (Saundra) Metzger of Fort Wayne; two daughters - Mrs. Herbert (Carolyn) Underwood of North Manchester and Mrs. Charles (Marilyn) Broyles of Westfield, IN; five sisters - Mrs. Dorothy Grossnickle of North Manchester, Mrs. Nina Prange of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Robert (Edith) Kennedy of South Whitley, Mrs. Dale (Ruby) Dilts of Larwill, and Mrs. Joseph (Beulah) Orcutt of Kendallville; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Timbercrest Chapel with Rev. Opal Nees officiating. Burial will take place in South Whitley Cemetery, located at South Whitley, IN.
Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Timbercrest Retirement Community, and the memorial guest book for Blanche may be signed on-line at grandstaff-hentgen.com.
