Maxine Baker
Services for Maxine Baker, 86, of 1100 W. Fourth St., North Manchester, were held Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee North Manchester Chapel with Rev. J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
Pallbearers were David Metzger, Robin Baker, Steve Hill, Rick Michel, Phil Shepherd, and Jack Schlagenhauser.
Martha A. Dickey
Services were held for Martha A. Dickey, 79, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2002 at West Eel River Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake. The Rev. Paul Tinkel and Chaplain Joan Deeter officiated and Marjorie Vance presided at the organ. Eulogy was given by Rev. Lester Young.
Special music was provided by Kay and Dale Kemph.
Burial took place at Elm Grove Cemetery, Bluffton, IN. Pallbearers were David Dickey, Kevin Dickey, Dan Hogen, Brian Weber, Heath Curless, and Derek Curless. Honorary pallbearers were Philip Curless, Karen Clark, Rob Clark, Mikel Hogan, Alicia Lankford, Theo Lankford, Sarah Hogan, and Alisha Weber.
Robert Charles Watson
Robert Charles Watson, 79, of 1316 Creekside Dr., Wabash, IN, died Monday, April 8, 2002 at Wesleyan Healthcare Center of Marion, IN. He was born April 10, 1922 at Wabash, IN to Manford and Agnes (Bridegroom) Watson. He married Marjorie Kuffel in Wabash on Feb. 27, 1971; she died June 6, 1999.
He was a member of the Grace Fellowship Church of Wabash. He was a 1941 graduate of Wabash High School. He was a life member of the Indiana Sheriff's Association. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 10th Armored Division and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe and was a radio operator. He received the European Theater Ribbon, three bronze stars, bronze star medal, and good conduct ribbon. He was a life member of Wabash V.F.W. Post 286.
After the war he worked for Diehl's in Wabash and General Electric Shop in Fort Wayne. He and Marjorie owned Watson Trophy Shop in Wabash. He joined the Wabash County Civil Defense in 1986, now the Emergency Management Agency, and was the director for 10 years. He became a member of the Sheriff's Reserve in 1954, and joined the Sheriff's Department in 1957 as a deputy; he was Wabash County Sheriff from 1963-1967.
Survivors include two sons - Rolland Gene Watson of Oklahoma and Larry James (Sue) Watson of Wabash; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Judith Anne) Owen of Gas City, IN; four granddaughters and two grandsons; also five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
Funeral service was held Friday, April 12, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel with Pastor Tom Cross officiating. Burial was in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery located at Marion, IN. Garl E. Shank
Garl E. Shank, 90, of 6529W 850S, Claypool, IN, died April 9, 2002 at Whitley Memorial Hospital, Columbia City, IN. He was born July 5, 1911 at Wabash County to Elmer E. and Florence Edna (Ferree) Shank. He was a 1930 graduate of Roann High School. He married Virginia Mae Spurgeon in Akron, IN on Oct. 8, 1933, and he owned and operated Shank's Store at Yellow Creek Lake 35 years, worked winters at Mollenhour's Lumber Co. in Mentone, IN and was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Claypool; a daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Donna) Swihart of Warsaw; three sons - Gerald "Bud" Shank and Merl Shank, both of Claypool and Charles Shank of Wabash; four granddaughters and a grandson as well as six great grandchildren. A granddaughter preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Friday, April 12, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Roann Chapel with Pastor Roderick Smith officiating. Burial was in Roann Community Cemetery, located at Roann.

Roselyn M. "Lynn" Gribben
Roselyn Marie "Lynn" Gribben, 60, of 1268 Richmond Dr., Wabash, IN, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at her residence. She was born Dec. 24, 1941 at Bay Ciy, MI to Joseph H. and Kitty (Grouix) Miller. She married James D. Gribben in Wabash on November 16, 1963; he died January 26, 1990.
She was a 1959 graduate of Wabash High School. She was formerly employed by the Wabash Clinic and retired from he Manchester Clinic, North Manchester in 2001. She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by three sons - James J. "Jamie" (Stephanie) Gribben and Joseph M. (Lisa) Gribben, both of Wabash, and Michael D. Gribben of Waterford, MI; two grandsons and two granddaughters, all of Wabash.
A rosary service was held Tuesday evening at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel; funeral service was set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Catholic Church with Father Sextus Don officiating. Burial took place at Falls Cemetery of Wabash.

Max Jordan Friermood
Max Jordan Friermood, 83, of 546 W. Harrison Ave., Wabash, IN, died Monday morning, Apr. 15, 2002 at Wabash County Hospital. He was born May 18, 1918 at Wabash County, IN to Guy Thomas and Rosa (Haupert) Friermood. He married Mary Helen Gackenheimer on Sept. 19, 1947 in Wabash, IN. He was a member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ.
Max was a 1936 graduate of Roann High School. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a 50-year life member of the Wabash American Legion Post #15 and VFW Post 286. He received his 50-year membership pin from the Hanna Masonic Lodge in Wabash and was a member of the Wabash F.O.P.
He and his brother Robert started Friermood Brothers DX Service Station in Wabash in 1952, and Max started and owned the Car Wash on South Wabash Street in 1966.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Helen of Wabash; a daughter, Mrs. James (Linda) Gardner of Wabash; two sons - Thomas (Pamela) Friermood of Harrison, OH and Dean(Karen) Friermood of Schererville, IN; a sister, Bonnie Schultz of Mesa, AZ; five granddaughters and a grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Friends may call at Grandstaff-Hentgen, Main Street Chapel Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthews United Church of Christ with Dr. Kent Young officiating; burial will take place in Falls Cemetery of Wabash. Catherine G. Fishback
Catherine "Katie" G. Fishback, 83, a lifetime resident of Wabash County, at 564 W. Maple St., Wabash, IN, died April 15, 2002 at Parkview Hospital, Ft. Wayne. She was born August 26, 1918 at Lagro, IN to Frank and Genevieve (Noonan) Edward. She married George A. Fishback June 8, 1942 and he preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1984.
She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church of Wabash. She was a 1936 graduate of Lagro High School, and was retired as bookkeeper from Maggart's Pontiac, Wabash. She was a member of St. Bernard Ladies Group; also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and at St. Bernard's.
She is survived by four sons - Dick (Ronda) Fishback, Dan Fishback, and Don Fishback, all of Wabash, and Doug (Amy) Fishback of Tipton, IN; three daughters - Mrs. Bob (Anne) King of Algonquin, IL, Mrs. Joe (Mary) Vogel of North Manchester, and Mrs. Jamie (Theresa) Singleton of Wabash; 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
A rosary service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, following an afternoon of visitation at McDonald Funeral Home, Eddingfield Chapel, Wabash. Funeral mass will take place Thursday, April 18, 2002 at St. Bernard Catholic Church of Wabash at 10:00 a.m. with Father Sextus Don and Father Timothy Wrozek officiating. Preferred memorials are to St. Bernard School. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash.
Edith L. Porter
Edith Louise Porter, 71, of 254 W. Main St., Wabash, IN, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at Wabash Skilled Care Center. She was born June 3, 1930 at Pennsylvanis to Clarence and Dora (Cettering) Fowler. She married Stephen N. Porter in Mishawaka on July 1, 1994. She was a resident of Wabash since 1994, coming from Mishawak whee she lived since 1963.
She was retired from Tepe's in South Bend, IN. She was a member of Belles and Beaus Square Dance Club of North Manchester, and the Highland Hills Women's Golf League.
She is survived by her husband Stephen of Wabash; two sons - Larry (Donna Saunders) Cook of Atlanta, GA and Kevin (Penny) Cook of Mishawaka; four daughters - Mrs. Richard (Pam) Kunkel of Torrance, CA, Mrs. Wayne (Patricia) VanGilder of Terre Haute, IN, Mrs. Richard (Carol) Groning of Elkhart, IN and Mrs. Robert (Kathy) Rhodes of Bradenton, FL; a step son, Jeffrey Porter of Marion, IN, step daughter, Janene Porter of Las Vegas, NV; a brother, John Fowler of Camden, MI; three sisters - Doris Kashin of Mocksville, NC, Norma DeNoon of Waterford, MI, and Linda Fowler of Camden, MI; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers and a sister.
Friends may call at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, Wabash on Saturday, April 20, 2002 from 9 to 10 a.m. Funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. with Rev. Melissa Rice officiating.

Edith Ryan
Edith Ryan, 91, died Monday, April 8, 2002 at Community Care Center of Wabash. She was a former resident of Silver Lake, IN and was a homemaker, and had been employed with the former Bryan Manufacturing at North Manchester, IN. She was born July 27, 1910 at Albany, Oregon to Charles and Mary (Ellsworth) Deter. She married Frank Ryan Sr. on August 4, 1929; he died Oct. 9, 1994.
She attended United Methodist Church, SR 15 North, Silver Lake.
Survivors include a son, Frank Ryan Jr., of Fremont, IN; daughters Mrs. Ed (Jean) Kerlin of Warsaw and Mrs. Ester (Shirley) Griffey of North Manchester; a brother, James Deeter of Marion, IN; nine grandchildren and one step grandchild; 23 great grandchildren, and two step grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren. One brother and a grandchild preceded her in death.
Friends may call at Center United Methodist Church, SR 15 North, Silver Lake on Thursday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Center United Methodist Church with Rev. Doris E. Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake.

Raymond C. Myer
Raymond C. Meyer, 83, of 5378N 400W, Wabash, IN, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester. He was born March 21, 1919 at Wabash County, IN to Horatio and Margaret (Gretzinger) Meyer. He married Helen Bechtold on May 11, 1941 in Wabash County.
He was a World War II army veteran, serving in the 3rd Army Division tank destroyer battalion; he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, Crossing of the Rhine,. and the occupation of Germany; he also received the Purple Heart. He was a former Cub Scout volunteer and a longtime coach and volunteer in the Roann Little League. He was also active many years in the Wabash Men's Bowling Association.
He was retired from General Tire, Wabash in 1976 after 34 years, and was a farmer. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Wabash County; the Wabash American Legion Post 15, the Moose Lodge, and the Peru VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Wabash; sons Ray Allen of Warsaw and Roger L. of Wabash; daughters Rebecca S. Smith of Wabash and Mrs. Rex (Ann) Meyer of Wabash; a brother Dale (Lois) Meyer of Canton, AL, and a sister Mrs. Lloyd (Doris) Mitterling of Sun City Center, FL; 10 grandchildren 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson; five step great grandchildren and one step great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be Wednesday, 2-8 p.m. at Grandstaff-Hentgen, Manchester Avenue Chapel. Funeral will be held Thursday, April 11, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN. Preferred memorials are to Wabash Field of Dreams.
Paul W. Greer
Paul W. Greer, 85, of 7394W 100N, Wabash, IN died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Rolling Meadows Healthcare Center, Lafontaine, IN. He was born June 16, 1916 at Logansport, IN to Jess and Bess (Bowman) Greer. He married Evelyn M. Greer at Covington, KY on May 17, 1941; she died Oct. 12, 2000.
Paul was a member of Center Chapel Brethren Church in Miami County. He graduated from New Waverly High School in 1934, and lived at one time in the Logansport area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and was a member of the Noble Twp. Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Donald (Carolyn) Everest of Marion, IN; two granddaughters and six great grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning, April 10, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Grandstaff-Hentgen Roann Chapel, Roann with Rev. Al Peck officiating. Burial will take place in the Greenlawn Cemetery of Mexico, IN.
