Ernest M. Shull
Ernest Melvin Shull, 86, of 402 N. Wayne St., North Manchester, IN, died Monday morning, March 18, 2002 at his residence. He was born Sept. 8, 1915 at Gerard, IL to William and Clara (Gibson) Shull. He married Lois Netzley in Ludington, MI on August 17, 1937.
He was a college professor, retiring from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne. He was also a Church of the Brethren minister, serving 20 years as a missionary in India. He graduated from Manchester College, where he also received an honorary doctorate. He and Lois are longtime participants of Rotary International, where he had served as president of the North Manchester Chapter. He was also an avid butterfly collector, and has an extensive collection of butterflies. He authored the informative book, "Butterflies in Indiana".
Survivors include his wife, Lois of North Manchester; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Linda Shull) Fisher of Liberty, IN; sons Jim (Janet) Shull of Silver Lake and Dan (Barb) Shull of Zionsville, IN; a brother, Arthur Shull of North Manchester, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 2:00 p.m. at the Manchester Church of the Brethren with Pastor Christen Miller-Rieman officiating. Burial will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester. Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Preferred memorials are to the Manchester Church of the Brethren or Manchester College Scholarship Fund in Memory of Ernest Shull.
Robert J. Harris
Robert J. Harris, 50, of 651 Bond St., Wabash, IN, died Monday morning, March 18, 2002 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Dec. 9, 1951 at Onieda, KY to Willard and Martha Jane (Wooton Alwine) Harris. He married Linda M. Barber June 23, 1973 in Wakefield, RI.
A 1969 graduate of Southwood High School, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1973. He worked for Smurfit Stone for 27 years in Wabash. He attended the Wabash Freewill Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Marion, IN. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 of Wabash.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of Wabash; his mother, Martha Jane Alwine and stepfather, Jerry Alwine , both of LaFontaine; a son, Christopher Robert Harris of Somerset; sisters Mrs. Tom (Jeani) Richards and Mrs. Mike (Delora) Arrowood, both of Wabash, and Vera Tyner of LaFontaine; and a brother Ronnie Edmond Harris of LaFontaine. A sister Barbara Ann Harris preceded him in death.
Friends may call at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, Wabash from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; funeral service will be held there Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Tom Richards officiating. Burial will take place in the LaFontaine Cemetery.
Donald L. Shrum
Donald L. Shrum, 90, of 305 S. Maple, Akron, In died Friday, March 15, 2002 at Woodlawn Hospital. He had formerly been a long time Rochester resident and wintered in Winterhaven, FL. He was born Sept. 5, 1911 at Iroquois, IL to Elias and Ida (Abolt) Shrum. He married Mary D. Bowen June 2, 1946 at North Manchester.
He was a member of Rochester First Church of God and attended the Akron Church of God. He was also a member of Fulton County Campers Association. He was retired from Sealed Power Corporation of Rochester after 28 1/2 years employment.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Mrs. John (Crystal) Weida of Akron; a son, Douglas (wife, Sandra) of Caribou, Maine; four grandchildren - Johna Kaser of Oviedo, FL, Jena Shewman of Akron, Karon Rosingol of Caribou, Maine, and Jerry Shrum of Wooster, Mass., nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A brother and three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, March 18, 2002 at Zimmerman Brother Funeral Home of Rochester. Pastor Terry McGarrity officiated, assisted by Lavon Crissinger. Burial was at Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to We Care DayCare Ministries of the Akron Church of God.
Martha A. Jontz
Martha A. Jontz, 84, a former rural North Manchester resident, and recently of Cardinal Nursing & Rehab Center, South Bend, IN, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at he South Bend Nursing Center. She was born November 16, 1917 at Fulton County, IN to Benjamin and Susie (Maloy) Jontz.
She was a member of the Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren. She graduated from Sidney High School and attended Manchester College; she never married. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Duane (Mary Louise) Rowland of South Whitley, IN. A brother and a sister preceded her in death.
Graveside funeral service is planned by Wednesday afternoon, 2:00 p.m. March 20, 2002. The Rev. Paul Tinkel will officiate and the burial will take place at South Pleasant Cemetery of rural Silver Lake.
Agnes R. Bechtold
Agnes R. Bechtold, 94, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, IN, died Friday evening, March 15, 2002 at Wabash County Hospital, Wabash, IN. She was born at Kosciusko County, IN to Worth Ersil and Tressa (Idle) Norris. She was a homemaker, married to M. Otto Bechtold on Nov. 11, 1929; he preceded her in death Aug. 30, 1970.
She was a graduate of Larwill High School, and attended Manchester College. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, and of the Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Carl Bechtold of Huntington, IN; daughters Mrs. Michael (Phyllis) Leckrone of Middleton, WI and Mrs. William (Miriam) Ruppel of North Manchester; a brother, Uhul (Mary) Norris of Wabash; sisters Virginia Keppler of Warsaw, IN and Mary Lancaster of San Antonio, TX; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Fred Bishop and Rev. David Friend officiating at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN.
Preferred memorials are to Timbercrest Retirement Community, 2201 East St., North Manchester, IN.
Edith M. Crumline
Edith Merle Crumline, 97, of 3235 Overman Ave., Marion, IN, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Marion General Hospital. She was born at Miami County to Charles and Eva (Shaw) Ramsey. She was a homemaker and helper on the farm, and was married to Harry F. Crumrine, Dec. 24, 1935; he preceded her in death. She lived in Marion the past 30 years, and was formerly a resident of Wabash County.
She was a graduate of Gilead High School, and attended Brookhaven Wesleyan Church at Marion.
Survivors include a son, Everett (Gladys) Crumrine of Marion; a grandson, Dennis (Sandra) Crumrine and two great granddaughters - Trista Ferguson and Juliet Pavey, all of Marion; five great grandsons - Shawn McClanahan, Robert J. Sparks, Christian McClanahan and Mark A. Jones, all of Marion, and Keith Sparks of Franklin, IN; also 10 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Walter Ramsey of Denver survives as do two sisters - Mrs. George (Geneva) Miller of Akron, IN and Marie Abner of Knightstown, IN. Three brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held Tuesday morning, March 19, 2002 at McDonald Funeral Home, LaFontaine Chapel, with the Rev. Gerry Shoemaker officiating. Burial was in Mississinewa Cemetery, Somerset, IN.
Bertha L. Steele
Bertha L. Steele, 79, of 563 Washington St., Wabash, IN, died at her residence Thursday, March 14, 2002. She was born May 27, 1922 at Wabash, IN to Sam and Ethel (Hippensteel) Leach. She married Wilbur E. Steele in Wabash, IN on Feb. 28, 1940; he died June 2, 1997. She was retired from Wabash Magnetics after 28 years.
She is survived by three sons, all of Wabash, IN - James A. Steele, Carl H . (Diann) Steele and Danny J. Steele; a daughter, Ms. Ollie (Sandra S.) Perkins of Pierceton; brothers Lorin Leach of Mishawaka, IN and Ralph Leach of North Manchester; a sister Mrs. Joe (Fran) Nemeth of Abilene, TX; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was a son, Larry Steele; five brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter.
Funeral service was held Monday, March 18, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel of Wabash, with Rev. Ralph Johnson officiating. Burial took place in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery located at Marion, IN.

Mildred L. Bridegroom
Mildred L. Bridegroom, 94, of 105 S. Jefferson Street, Silver Lake, IN, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Miller's Merry Manor of Warsaw. She was born November 3, 1907 at Silver Lake, IN to Samuel S. and Trella (Rhoades) Reed.
She married Merle Bridegroom on Dec. 15, 1925 in Silver Lake, IN and he died in 1956. She was a homemaker, and operated a fruit market in Silver Lake for several years. She had also worked in several area factories. She was a member of the Warsaw American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include sons Marland "Jim" (Evelyn) Bridegroom, and Ronald (Barbara) Bridegroom, all of Wabash; a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Jean) Warren of North Manchester; 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
A daughter, Sondra Sellers, died in 1996.
Funeral service was held Saturday, March 16, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary Silver Lake Chapel with Pastor Nikki Marker officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery of Silver Lake.
Joseph H. Sausaman
Joseph Hugh Sausaman, 71, of 1619S 700W, Wabash, IN, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at his residence. He was born November 8, 1930 at Peru, IN to Chester and Thelma (Rouch Eikenberry ) Sausaman. He married Patty Sue Baer in Wabash on June 30, 1951. He worked for Container Corporation 38 years, retiring in 1986. He was a self-employed farmer and a Roann High School graduate.
He is survived by his wife of Wabash; daughters Mrs. Jim (Kathy) Dale of North Manchester, Mrs. Mike (Tammy) Howard of Urbana, and Mrs. Paul (Linda) Smith of Lagro; a son, Dave (Nora) Sausaman of Wabash and a sister, Mrs. William C. (Jean) Kepner of West Lafayette, IN; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Friday, March 15, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with Pastor Jason Gross officiating. Burial was in Falls Cemetery of Wabash.

John E. Kline
Services for John E. Kline, 61, of 5142 W. Warren Ave., Silver Lake, IN were held Friday afternoon, March 15, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee North Manchester Chapel. The Rev. Lorenza Hurd officiated, and burial was in South Pleasant Cemetery of rural Silver Lake, IN.
Pallbearers were Bill Kline, Dan Easterday, Chris Kline, Robert Silvia, Andrew Slone, and William Kline.
Harold Watson
Services for Harold Watson, 84, of 4233W 1300N, Silver Lake, IN were held Friday morning, March 15, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary No. Manchester Chapel; Pastor Jeffrey Hawkins officiated, and burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery of Urbana, IN.
Serving as pallbearers were Jim Speicher, Steve Watson, Jim Shear, Todd Bechtold, David Dickerhoff, and Tom Bucher.
Jesse D. Lefforge
Services for Jesse D. Lefforge, 81, of rural North Manchester, were held Saturday morning, March 16, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel. The Pastor Fred Bishop officiated and Leona Leckrone presided at the organ.
Military service consisted of the color guard and gun salute, provided by the V.F.W. Post #286 of Wabash. Max Reed presented the flag, and burial was in Fairview Cemetery of Servia.
Serving as pallbearers were Roger Price Jr., Rodney Price, Rocklin Price, Randy Schroll, Kenneth Hoemig, and Jeff Woods.
