Carl Ray Bennett
Carl Ray Bennett, 65, of 3867E 1100N Macy, IN, died Friday, May 3, 2002 at Woodlawn Hospital of Rochester, IN. He was born March 12, 1937 at Piqua, OH to Almon and Lula (Garrett) Bennett. He married Shirley Henderson on Dec. 22, 1955 in St. Louis, MO.
He was a member of the Olive Branch Church of God of Roann, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors in addition to his wife Shirley include three daughters - Mrs. Dean (Shirley Lee) Schaeffer of Troy, OH, Mrs. Thomas (Shari) Treon of Wabash, IN, and Mrs. Donald (Sharla) Reavis of Wrightwood, CA; two sisters Mrs. Ray (Betty) Wackler of Piqua, OH and Mrs. Joseph (Phylis) Matthews of Dayton, OH; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Three brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral service was held Monday, May 6, at the Olive Branch Church of God, Roann, with the Rev. Lowell Burrus and Pastor Stanley Owen officiating. Burial was in Enterprise Cemetery located at Rt. 1, Roann, Miami County.

Paul E. Meyer
Paul E. Meyer, 83, of 5866W 200S Lot #30, Wabash, IN died Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at Highlands Regional Medical Center of Sebring, FL. He was born January 4, 1919 at Wabash County, IN to Ross and Creth (Brower) Meyer. He married Phyllis Jean Carpenter in Wabash County Aug. 26, 1945. He lived winters in Sebring since 1980.
He was a member of the First Brethren Church, the V.F.W. Post 286, the Moose Lodge, and the Eagles Lodge all of Wabash, and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a retired truck driver for Brown From Wabash Trucking Co. after 27 years.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Jean of Wabash; sons Stephen (Ann) Meyer of Roann and Stanley Meyer of Wabash; a daughter, Mrs. Don (Linda Jane) Whitney of Roann; and sisters, Mrs. Robert (Dorotha) Dyson and Betty Nees, both of Wabash; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel with Rev. J. D. Smith officiating. Burial was in Roann Community Cemetery, Roann. A Moose Twi-Lite service was held Monday evening at the funeral; home.

George A. Nagel
George Albert Nagel, 83, of 4412 Sail Fish Lane, Palmetto, FL, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at Community Care Center, Wabash, IN. He was born Sept. 27, 1918 at Corry, PA to George Oscar and Julia (Ohrn) Nagel. He married Christina L. Galley on Sept. 18, 1943 at Niagara Falls; she died January of 1992.
Mr. Nagel was president of Wabash Alloys, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Palmetto, FL Presbyterian Church. He was an avid fisherman and an enthusiastic supporter of the Wabash Smelting/ Alloys Men Softball Teams. He was a 1939 graduate of Taylor University and did graduate studies at Penn State University. He was one of the founding principles of Wabash Smelting in 1957. He lived in Wabash 1957-1985, then moved to Palmetto, FL. He was a past president of Aluminum Recyclers Association.
Survivors include two sons - Robert (Julie) Nagel of Wabash and David (Pamela) Nagel of Crown Point, IN; a daughter, Mrs. James (Penelope) Goodyear of Black River, NY; sisters Mrs. George (Ruth) Mock of Pensacola, FL and Mrs. William (Charlotte) Burdick of Cape Cod, MA; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Saturday, May 4, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel with Rev. Tony Thomas officiating. Preferred memorials are to C.H.E.E.R.

Lester A. West
Lester A. West, 89, 6051N 900W, and a resident of Norwood Nursing Center of Huntington, died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Parkview Huntington Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 31, 1913 at Huntington Township, Huntington County, IN to Ernest and Jennis M. (Carl) West and a lifetime resident of Huntington County. He was a 1931 graduate of Huntington Township High School. He married Melba M. Berry on April 8, 1939 in Huntington County; she preceded him in death on Sept. 16, 1999.
He retired in 1975 as the former owner of W.W. Locker in Bippus, which he owned since 1947. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Bippus.
He is survived by one son - Thomas (Susan) West of Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Julie) Kaylor of Huntington; a half brother, Clifford Webb of Bippus; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild. Three sisters - Marguerite Eckart, Evelyn Burnworth and Helen Ulrich and one half brother Donald Webb, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 6, 2002 at Bailey-Love Mortuary, Huntington, with Rev. Robert Hanson officiating. Burial was in Gardens of Memory in Huntington County.
Memorials may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, or the Activity Department of Norwood Nursing Center, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington, IN 46750.

Arloene E. Haynes
Arloene E. Haynes, 91, of 3559W SR 124, Wabash, IN, died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Millers Merry Manor West, Wabash. She was born Dec. 9, 1910 at Roann, IN to Ira and Alice (Hunter) Heagy. She married Verlin A. Haynes on Dec. 17,1955 in Miami County; he died March 3, 2002.
She graduated from Laketon High School in 1929, and the Nursing School at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in 1939. She worked as a registered nurse at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Wabash County Hospital of Wabash, and as a private duty nurse. She was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church and the Hoosier Homemakers Club.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Robert (Roberta) Snoke of Ft. Wayne, Joan Day of Peru, and Mrs. Richard (Sharon) Landis of Venice, FL; nephews DeWayne (Betty) Heagy of North Manchester, John (Carolyn) Heagy of Roann, and Pawnee (Lois) Haynes of Gas City. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Funeral service was held Monday, May 6, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel, Wabash, with Dr. David Abel officiating. Burial was in Murphy Cemetery of Wabash County.

Kathryn A. Lisk
Kathryn A. Lisk, 90, of Rolling Meadows Healthcare, LaFontaine, IN, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at Marion General Hospital, Marion, IN. She was born July 31, 1911 at Westfield, NJ to David C., and Charlotte (Woidt) Austin. A homemaker, she married Huyler L. Lisk on Sept. 2, 1935; he survives at Upland, IN after 67 years of marriage.
She was a lifelong resident of New Jersey until moving to Upland in 1977. She graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School of New York City in 1930. Before her marriage, she was employed with Bankers Trust Co., New York City. She was a very active member of Upland United Methodist Church; and a member of Upland Community Homemakers and Epsilon Deca.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters - Mrs. Tom (Janet) Jarman of North Manchester and Mrs. Harry (Carolyn) Bronkar of East Greenwich, RI; sister Hazel Stickney of Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester; three grandchildren - Jennifer Jarman Geraghty of Rogers, MN, Rebecca Jarman Hoekstra of Hudsonville, MI, and Benjamin Jarman of Columbus, OH; three great grandchildren - Braedon Geraghty and Griffin Geraghty, both of Rogers, MN and Zachary Hoekstra of Hudsonville, MI; a fourth grandchild, David Bronkar, preceded her in death.
Funeral service is planned for Saturday, May 11, 2002 at 4:30 p.m. at the Upland United Methodist Church, of Upland, IN. The Revs. Ken Puent and Harry Bronkar will officiate; preferred memorials are to the Upland United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel.

Richard G. Marden
Richard Gibbs Marden, 92, died April 29, 2002 at a Brunswick Hospital. He was born in 1909 in Worcester, MA, a son of Leslie E. and Lillian (Grimes) Marden. A 1931 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, he received a M.Ed. from the Boston University Graduate School of Education. He married June Florence Parker on April 9, 1932 and she predeceased him in July 1985. They were residents of South Freeport for 21 years and he moved to Topsham, Main in 1992.
He was commissioned a Ltjg in 1942 and served with U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served at the USNR Midshipman School, US Naval Base, Leyte, Philippine Islands and as the commanding officer USNRTC at Elmira, NY and retired as a Commander USNR in 1964.
For 32 years he was the chairman of the science department at the Worcester, MA Classical High School and for eight years at the Falmouth, ME High School. He was a member of the South Freeport Congregational Church and the Harraseeket Yacht Club.
Surviving are his sons, Parker G. Marden and his wife, Ann of North Manchester, IN (where he is president of Manchester College) and Alan L. Marden and his wife Nancy of North Adams, MA (where he is serving as president of the North Adams City Council); his grandchildren, Jonathan R. Marden, Kerri Ann Marden, Darcy M. Hisert, Elizabeth M. Harden; his great-grandchildren, Rutger Hisert and Rachel Bisson.
Private family services will be held at the Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth, Maine. Interment will be in the South Freeport Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana 46962.

Carl R. Metzger
Services for Carl R. Metzger, 74, of Claypool, IN were held Thursday morning, April 25, 2002 at Eel River Old German Baptist Church of Silver Lake, IN; the Home Brethren officiated.
Burial was in Old German Baptist Cemetery of North Manchester with Laban Hopkins, Melvin Moser, Reuben Moser, Todd Metzger, Carlos Metzger, and Curtis Metzger serving as pallbearers.
Arrangements were by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary No. Manchester Chapel.

Hayden E. Slagal
Services were held for Hayden E. Slagal, 97, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, on Wednesday afternoon, May 8, 2002 at Timbercrest Chapel. Chaplain David Doudt and Rev. Glenn Mulligan officiated. Wanda Miller presided at the organ and Margaret Pletcher was soloist.
Burial was at Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington, IN. Pallbearers were Bill Shanks, Roy Beeler, Steven Slagal, Michael Vernon, and Richard McCutchen.
Arrangements were by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel.

Esther M. Anderson
Esther Meriam Anderson, 83, formerly of 845 N. Miami St., Wabash, moving from here to Spring, TX, in 1998, and died May 3, 2002 at Tomball Regional Hospital, Tomball, TX. She was born Oct. 5, 1918 at Cleveland, OH to Joseph B. and Esther (Seymour) Meriam. She married Harold H. Anderson at Muncie, IN on August 23, 1941; he died May 27, 1997.
She was a graduate of Purdue University and received her nurses training from Mount Sinai Hospital, Cleveland, OH. She worked as a registered nurse for the Ball Memorial Hospital of Muncie, the Stratford House Nursing Home of Wabash, and served as the Wabash County Health Nurse. She received the Book of Golden Deeds from the Exchange Club.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Wabash, Wabash County Republican Women, Wabash County Hospital Auxiliary, the Golden Nurses, League of Women Voters, and a life member of Wabash Historical Society. She served on the following boards: American Red Cross, Wabash Symphony Board and Wabash Women's Club. She belong to the Red Cross Blood Bank and Wabash County Hospital Volunteers.
She is survived by two sons - Richard (Sherry) Anderson of Spring, TX and Philip (Patty) Anderson of Frisco, TX; granddaughters Mrs. Dennis (Tamara L.) Welch of Houston, TX, Mrs. Ken ( Heather J.) Lee of Denton, TX, and Mrs. Matt (Kari R.) Keck of Stillwater, OK; two brothers Joseph Meriam of Vero Beach, FL and Mark Meriam of Olmstead, OH; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 10, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel, Wabash, with Pastor Bill Garver officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawns Cemetery of Wabash. Preferred memorials are to the American Red Cross.

Margaret P. Smith
Margaret P. Smith, 81, of 1225 Greencroft Drive, Goshen, IN, formerly of North Manchester, died May 5, 2002 at Greencroft Healthcare Center of Goshen, IN. She was born Sept. 29, 1920 at Madison County, Virginia, to J. Tucker and Sarah Leigh (Lillard) Dixon. She married John H. Smith on July 7, 1946; he died May 11, 1978.
She was an active member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren and a former member of the Business & Professional Women's Club of North Manchester, as well as a former member of Manchester College Women's Club. She was a 1938 graduate from Criglersville (VA) High School and from Bridgewater College in 1942. She taught Home Economics at Sidney High School from 1955 until consolidation and then taught at Whitko Junior High until her retirement in May 1978.
She is survived by a son, Steven (Suzanne) Smith of Jersey City, N.J.; daughters Bonnie Hammonds of South Bend and Mrs. James (Deborah) Emans of Bremen, IN; brothers Randolph (Ervel) Dixon and Denton (Delores) Dixon, both of Madison, VA; sisters Mrs. Thomas (Mildred) Ford of Madison, VA and Annie Lena Kitchen of Criglersville, VA; four grandchildren - Mrs. Ryan (Cassie Emans) Scheerer of Kendallville, IN, Laura Hammonds of South Bend, IN, Eric Emans and Andrew Emans, both of Bremen, IN; also great-grandchildren Massana and Madison Scheerer of Kendallville, IN.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester. Friends may call at Timbercrest Chapel one hour prior to service. Rev. Hubert Newcomer will officiate and burial will be in Ulrey Memorial Cemetery, rural Silver Lake.
DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary North Manchester Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Preferred memorials are to Greencroft Foundation, Manchester College, or Alzheimer's Association.
