Ida Mae Stellar
Ida Mae Stellar, 76, of 55 S. Mulberry St., Servia, IN, died June 19, 2002 at her residence. She was born Oct. 22, 1925 at Laketon, IN to Henry D. and Mabel I. (Sickafus) Reiken. She was a homemaker, and married Carl E. Stellar Jan. 1, 1949; he preceded her in death April 16, 1990.
She was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church, North Manchester.
Survivors include a son, Herbert Stellar of North Manchester; daughters Carla Stellar, North Manchester and Mrs. Curtis (Tanya) Shoemaker of Wabash; a brother, Jim Reiken of Mentone; and sisters Mrs. Carroll (Lena) Coble of Wabash, Mrs. Walt (Susie) Brown of Roanoke, Ruth Calhoun if Ijamsville, Joan Meredith of Pierceton, Rose Bell of Warsaw, and Carol Jean Coleman of Roann; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Saturday, June 22, 2002 at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary No. Manchester Chapel with Pastor Eddie Akins officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, IN.

Sarah E. Gidley
Sarah E. "Betty" Gidley, 79, of 672 Columbus St., Wabash, IN, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at her residence. She was born Mar. 11, 1923 at Salem, IN to Sylvania "Vane" and Maude Marie (Knight) Pitts. She married Wayne A. Gidley in Wabash on Sept. 4, 1939; he died Jan. 1, 1990. She retired from General Telephone Company after 30 years.
She was a former member of the South Side Evangelical United Brethren Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a 30-year member of the Wabash Order of the Eastern Star; and a former member of Tri Kappa, all of Wabash.
Survivors include sons William E. "Duke" Gidley of San Antonio, TX, Larry D. Gidley of Peru, IN and Gary B. Gidley of Wabash; daughters Nancy J. Crowe of Ft. Knox, KY, Beth Girtz of Monticello, IN and Brenda D. Norman of Brighton, MI. Three sisters survive - Martha Jane Worrel of Lafayette, IN, Lucy Christle of Venice, FL and Pauline Plum of Wabash; a brother Harry Pitts of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Jeffrey P. Gidley, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral service was held Saturday, June 22, 2002 at the Wabash Friends Church with Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial was in Friends Cemetery of Wabash.

E. Max Maggart
E. Max Maggart of Tucson, AZ, died at his residence June 5, 2002. He was born Nov. 4, 1928 at Cromwell, IN to Albert and Mabel (Leedy) Maggart. He first married Beverly Klingaman in 1952 at Cromwell; she died in 1993. He then married Ardith "Dolly" Gaff Pontious in Akron, IN in 1995 and she survives. He had lived at Tucson since 1980.
He attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church near Akron, and was a member of the Tucson American Legion Post 36. He worked in civil service at David Monthan Air Base in Tucson, retiring in 1990. He was an Army Veteran during the Korean Conflict, and received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife Ardith "Dolly" Maggart of Macy, IN, a son, Dwaine (Carol) Maggart of Moorpark, CA; step sons Steve (Vicky) Pontious of Monroe, MI and Eric (Diane) Pontious of Akron, IN; step daughters Mrs. Darrell (Cheri) Lewis of Wabash and Mrs. David (Patti) Cordill of North Manchester; sisters Mrs. Ed (Sharon) Batesia of Syracuse and Janis Turner of Goshen; 13 step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday, June 24, 2002 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church near Akron with Rev. Richard K. Fox officiating.

William I. Caldwell
William Isaac Caldwell, 94, of Tucson, AZ, died Feb. 17., 2002 at Tucson. He was born Oct. 28, 1907 at Bloomington, IN to Leroy W. and Anna (Jaques) Caldwell. He married Pauline Frances Pfeifer on August 15, 1937, and she survives. He was a member of the Methodist Church of West Hills, CA.
He was a 1925 graduate of Silver Lake High School, and a 1929 graduate of Indiana University, earning a B.A. in Math. As a graduate student at Purdue, he was a physics assistant, an instructor in an x-ray course for chemical engineers, set up a laboratory for crystal structure determination using continuously evacuated x-ray tubes, and for radiography. He designed a new type of electron diffraction camera, and found the difference in cellulose spiral angle in spruce wood used in a Stradivarius violin and present-day spruce. He received an MS Physics degree in 1934.
He worked in the research department of Taylor Instrument Company, Rochester, NY from 1937-1959. During work on flat-sided Boudron springs, he developed a theory relating dimensions, pressure change, and stress. As a result, the life of industrial mercury and steel temperature-measuring instruments was significantly increased.
During World War II, he made contributions to instruments used in gaseous diffusion plants for separating uranium 235 for atomic bombs and was the engineer for assembly and testing of the double-ended periscope gun sight for A-26 airplanes. He worked at Marquardt Corp., Van Nuys, CA from 1959 until his retirement in 1990. At Marquardt he designed hydraulic inlet control systems for Lockheed supersonic transport, controls for missiles, and altitude control rockets for space vehicles. He obtained a patent for a self-tuning automated controller, co-edited Frequency Response for Process Control, was a program chair for the Princeton Conference in Nonlinear Controls, and was active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He was the descendant of several pioneer families of Kosciusko County including the Caldwells, Jamesons, Wells, McClure and Jaques families. He was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the Physics Honor Society, Sigma Pi Sigma, and the beta theta chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was also a Mason (Seneca Lodge). He was a member of Nature's Conservancy and the Indiana Historical Society. His interests included working in the garden and investing.
In addition to his wife, Pauline, he is survived by three daughters - Carol C. VanDerMeid of Tucson, AZ, Dianne Sax of Venice, CA and Bonnie Irwin of Urbana, IL; a brother, Lt. Col. (retired) McClure Caldwell of Biloxi, Mississippi; sisters Anita Hamaker of Dallas, TX and Christobel Sears of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at the Graceland Cemetery of Claypool, IN with Rev. Richard Sochacki officiating. Preferred memorials are to the Salvation Army.

Everett T. Miller
Everett Trell Miller, 78, of 374 Sherman St., Wabash, IN died Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Nov. 20. 1923 at Wabash, IN to Clean Everett and Alta May (Cook) Miller, both deceased. He was a graduate of Urbana High School, and married Doris West Dec. 25, 1946; she preceded him in death Nov. 2, 1991.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II from 1943-46. He was awarded the Silver Star. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #286 of Wabash, Hanna Lodge #61 F & AM, Wabash. He was a member of the Ironworker Local at Ft. Wayne and a long-time member of Experimental Aircraft of Rockford, IL. He was retired from Fisher Body, Marion, IN in 1979 after 20 years service.
Survivors include daughters - Mrs. Fred (Shirley R.) Neibauer of Jenkintown, PA, Jodie A. Miller and Jamie B. Miller, both of Wabash; and two grandchildren. A brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Private graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Memorial Lawns Cemetery of Wabash with Pastor Jim Morrisett officiating.
Max I. Allen
Services for Max I. Allen, 89, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, were held Wednesday afternoon, June 19, 2002 at North Manchester United Methodist Church. Rev. Bruce Hostetler officiated and Robin Gratz presided at the organ. Vocal music was provided by Carol Streator.
Burial was at Davis Cemetery of Burnettsville, IN. Pallbearers were Drew Allen, Bill Allen, Nate Allen, Nick Allen, Richard Guidry, and Kerry Hippensteel.
Arrangements were by DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary No. Manchester Chapel.
Brad Alan Mishler
Brad Alan Mishler, 42, of Clemons, North Carolina and formerly of North Manchester, IN died Monday, July 1, 2002 at the Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born February 5, 1960 at Wabash, IN to James W. and Shirley (Smith) Mishler, both of whom survive at North Manchester. He married DeAnne Poole Dec. 31, 1983 and she survives.
Brad was an athletic trainer with Pryblo-RESS Rehabilitation Center of Winston-Salem, N.C. from 1991-1999. He graduated from Manchester High School with the Class of 1978 and from Indiana University in 1982 with a Bachelors Degree in sports medicine. He received his Masters Degree in sports medicine from the University of North Carolina in 1983. He was employed with I.P.F.W. from 1983-84 and at Marietta College, Marietta, OH from 1985-1991.
He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, N.C.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by a son, Kyle William and a daughter, Kelly Elizabeth, both at home; a brother Kent (Holly) Mishler of Chesterton, IN and a sister, Mrs. Kevin (Janean) Watson of North Manchester; and his paternal grandmother, Theresa Mishler of Akron, OH and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 7, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at First Brethren Church, North Manchester, with Pastor Kurt Stout officiating. The family will receive friends following the 1:00 p.m. service.

Magdalene Howard
Magdalene Howard, 71, of 972W 900S, Claypool, IN, died Monday, July 1, 2002 at her residence. She was born April 9, 1931 in Risner, KY to Alvin and Melvinia (Pitts) Ousley. She married Lawrence Howard March 31, 1951, and he preceded her in death May 20, 1997.
She was a homemaker who resided in Kosciusko County since 1950. She was a member of the Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of Silver Lake, IN.
Survivors include two daughters - Sharon Roe of Warsaw, and Cheryl Buell of Claypool; two sons - Jim Howard of Warsaw and Tim Howard of Mentone; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters - Bernice Coon of Decatur, IN and Non Robinson of Prestonsburg, KY; four brothers - Carlos Wade Ousley of Warsaw; Home Ousley of Pierceton; Charles Ray Ousley of Claypool; and Carson Ousley of Silver Lake. She was preceded in death by two sons, a grandson, two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral service will be held at Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of Silver Lake, IN with Rev. Frank Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Silver Lake, IN.

Sharon Ann Scott
Sharon Ann Scott, 66, of 3271N 400E, Lagro, IN died June 27, 2002 at Hospice of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born Dec. 14, 1935 at Lagro, IN to Garland and Lucille Catherine (Urschel) Jester. She was married to William O. Scott, who survives in Cloverdale, IN.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Lagro United Methodist Church. She was a 1954 graduate of Lagro High School.
She is survived by two sons - William Fredrick Scott of Trafalgar, IN and Dr. Ronald Ray (Cassie) Scott of St. Charles, MO; a brother, Dr. Max (Carol) Jester of Antioch, IL, and a sister Sandra Hartman of Huntington, IN. Three grandchildren also survive, namely Michael Joseph Scott, Claire Elizabeth Scott and Jack Brendan Scott, all o f St. Charles, MO.
Funeral service was held Monday, July 1, 2002 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Main Street Chapel, Wabash, with the Rev. Melissa Rice officiating. Burial was in Center Grove Cemetery of Lincolnville, IN.

Alfred Spice
Alfred Spice, 100, a former Columbia City area resident, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002 in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester. He was born Oct. 16, 1901 in Kent, England, a son of Walter and Katherine (Andrews) Spice. His family moved to the United States when he was 11 years old, and settled in Fort Wayne. Mr. Spice was educated in the Rudisill Grade School and Fort Wayne Vocational School.
He was employed as a plumber for the Plumber's International Union and retired in 1962 from the Parkview Hospital, where he was employed in maintenance for eleven years.
On Nov. 25, 1922, he was united in marriage to Bessie A. Bechtol and they made their home in Fort Wayne until 1975, when they moved to Crooked Lake, near Columbia City. In October 1990, they moved to Peabody Retirement Community. Mrs. Spice preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 1994.
Mr. Spice was a member of the Merriam Christian Chapel Church and a 50-year member of Columbia City Eagles Lodge. He had served in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Ruth Ely, Toms River, N.J.; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and a great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert W. Spice, and he was the last of 19 brothers and sisters.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, July 2, 2002 in Peabody Retirement Community Chapel, with Chaplain Harry J. Truman officiating. Burial was in Lindenwood Cemetery of Fort Wayne,.
