Margarette E. Bassetti
Margarette E. Bassetti, 88, died July 14, 1999, at Medicine
Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge.
She was born May 25, 1911, at Haven, the daughter of Henry
J. and Alta Elnora Wilson Koch. A Medicine Lodge resident
since 1997, moving from Corpus Christi, Texas, she was an
aircraft repair controller.
She belonged to the American Business Women's Association,
The Business and Professional Women's Association and was
a former member of the board of director for the Red Cross
and Salvation Army, both at Corpus Christ.
In July 1946, she married Joe Bassetti at Wichita. He died
in 1966.
Survivors include: a brother, Gerald Koch, Medicine Lodge;
a sister, Clarice L. Irion, Medicine Lodge; a nephew; and two
grandnieces.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Willis H. Koch.
Graveside services were Monday, July 19, 1999, at Seaside
Memorial Park, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Jennifer Marie Rathgeber
Jennifer Marie Rathgeber, 14, died July 15, 1999, at Colorado
Springs, Colorado.
She was born October 29, 1984, at Kiowa, the daughter of John
and Lisa Nixon Rathgeber.
A Wichita resident for two years, moving from Kiowa, she
attended Curtis Middle School, Wichita.
She attended United Methodist Church, Kiowa.
Survivors include: parents, Wichita; a brother, Trenton
Rathgeber, Wichita; grandparents, Clarence and Dorothy Weber,
Lansing, Michigan, and Eloise Rathgeber, Kiowa; and numerous
aunts and uncles.
Memorial service was Monday, July 19, 1999, at United Methodist
Church, Kiowa, with the Rev. R. Laney Kuhn presiding.

Guy Frederick Aubley
Guy Frederick Aubley, 90, died July 2, 1999, at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge.
He was born April 17, 1909, on the family farm near Medicine
Lodge, the son of William C. and Lucy A. Lukens Aubley. A lifetime Barber County resident. He was a farmer and rancher and the
former operator of Aubley Trucking.
He was a participant in the Indian Peace Treaty, starting with
the very first one. He was involved in the Pony Express portration
for as long as his health let him.
He belonged to First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, where he
was a deacon, was a past president of the Barber County Farm Bureau,
a 4-H leader and belonged to the Pratt Saddle Club.
On January 30, 1931, he married Bertha Ellen Singer at Kiowa.
She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Gene and Pat Aubley, Sawyer; a
daughter, Barbara and Dick Petry, Dover, Tennessee; a brother, Ralph,
Medicine Lodge; three grandchildren, Stephanie and Ron Hawkins,
Medicine Lodge, Brad Petry, Renton, Washington, and Pam Ferguson,
Seattle, Washington; and three great-grandchildren, Clayton Miracle,
Pratt, Ian and Maggie Hawkins, Medicine Lodge.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl; and a sister, Madge
Evans.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 5, 1999, at First Christian
Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Tom Walters, presiding. Burial
was in Mumford Cemetery, Nashville.

Ernest F. Hoch
Ernest F. Hoch, 60, died June 26, 1999, at Medicine Lodge Memorial
Hospital, Medicine Lodge.
He was born December 20, 1938, in Butler County, the son of Chester
R. and Beatrice Foreman Hoch. A Medicine Lodge resident since January
1981, moving from Williston, North Dakota, he was a logging and
perforating engineer and station manager for most of his life and
recently worked as an equipment operator for Medicine Lodge Township.
He belonged to United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, the American
Legion, the Bridge Club, and was a 32nd. degree Mason and Shriner, and
served with the Peace Treaty Pageant for many years. He was a U.S.
Marine Corps Veteran.
On June 25, 1966, he married Connie Marie Bennett at Logan. She
survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Eric R. and his wife Corona,
Medicine Lodge, and Brett E. and his wife Michelle, Union, Missouri;
mother, Lincoln; a brother, Wesley W., Logan; and two grandsons,
Travis Ray Hoch and Dale William Hoch, Medicine Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his father; a son, Todd D.; and a
sister, Hazel D. Conaway.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at United
Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Revs. Jim Godbey and
Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine
Lodge.

J.W. 'Jim' McCullough
J.W. 'Jim' McCullough, 83, died June 28, 1999, at Medicine
Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge.
He was born October 13, 1915, at JoyCoy, Colorado, the son
of Moody and Fanny Kendall McCullough. A Medicine Lodge resident
since 1931, moving from Joy Coy, Colorado, he was a farmer and
rancher.
He belonged to the Kansas Farm Bureau, the Barber County
Cattlemen's Association, Kansas Wheat Growers Association and
the Kansas Livestock Association; served on the Barber County
Fair Board, was a Sawyer Co-op Board member and a 4-H tractor
safety leader, and was chairman of ASCS and a past president
of the Saddle and Roping Club.
On January 15, 1938, he married Marian Clair Lukens at Medicine
Lodge. She died April 24, 1997.
Survivors include: three sons, Stan L., Lamar, Colorado, Jimmie
Dean and Pat G., both of Medicine Lodge; a daughter, Marilyn Sue
Smith, Galva; a brother, Tom, Wichita; a sister, Viola Shaw, Inman;
14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Jack; a grandson,
Mikeal Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Billie Smikth, and
Kassie and Katie Thomas.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 2, 1999, at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Tom Walters
presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Lonnie L. Nelson
Lonnie L. Nelson, 74, died July 5, 1999, at his home in Clinton,
Oklahoma.
He was born November 13, 1924 at Grandfield, Oklahoma, the son
of Dewey R. and Ozella Arter Nelson. He was raised in Clinton where
he worked for Allison Hyde and Metal. He lived in Medicine Lodge
from 1952 to 1974, the returned to Clinton where he opened Nelson
Iron & Metal which he operated until retiring in 1991.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
On July 31, 1943, he married Alice DeVore at Clinton. She survives.
Other survivors include: a daughter, Linda Kay Nelson, Burrton; a
brother; a sister; six grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at First Church
of God, Clinton. Burial was in Clinton Cemetery.

arrangements.
Minnie Jacobs Nagel
NAGEL - Minnie Jacobs (Mother Nagel), was born May 31, 1865, in
Essen, Germany, and died February 18, 1960, in Wichita, Kansas.
While in Germany, she was married to Alex Seegar; to this union a
daughter was born. At the age of twenty-three, she came to America
and settled in Monongahela Valley, Pennsylvania. It was here that
she met and married Frederick Henry Nagel in 1905; two sons were
born to them. Originally a Lutheran, she later became a member of
the Hitite movement. She and her husband moved with that group to
Kansas, where she first heard of the Reorganization. Following her
baptism into the Reorganized Church the family moved to Oilton,
Oklahoma, where she was instrumental in getting a branch of the
church started. In 1930 she returned to Kansas, where she became
manager of the Prairie View Hotel in Hardtner. Many ministers
recall her hospitality and good cooking.
She is survived by her daughter, Elsa M. Kennedy of Graciom,
Oregon; two sons: Carl Frederick Nagel of Longview, Texas, and
Benjamin Densmore Nagel of Bethany, Oklahoma; twenty-three grandchildren; fifty great-grandchildren; and twelve great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Culbertson Chapel, Wichita,
Kansas. Seventy James S. Menzies officiating. Interment was at
Oilton, Oklahoma.
Charles Warren 'Chuck' Payne
Charles Warren 'Chuck' Payne, 77, died June 30, 1999, at Kiowa
District Hospital, Kiowa.
He was born October 20, 1921, in Kansas, the son of John Franklin
and Rosa Josephine Payne. He graduated from Hutchinson High School.
He was a plumber and heating and air contractor. He also operated
Thoroughbred Trailer Park, Kiowa, for over 40 years.
He belonged to America Legion for 53 years and was vice commander
at the time of his death. He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign
Wars Cosmos Lodge No. 278, Shriners and Kiowa Camping Club for
serveral years. He did volunteer work at a cardboard recycling plant
and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving a Victory
Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
On January 10, 1948, he married Maxine Elizabeth Veatch at Hutchinson.
She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Kent, Chicago, Illinois; a daughter,
Virginia Hasenack, Manzanola, Colorado; two brothers, Paul, Charlotte,
North Carolina, and Mark, Topeka; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John; and a sister Ruth
Roland.
Memorial service was Saturday at United Methodist Church, Kiowa,
with the Rev. Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in Hope Cemetery,
Arkansas City.

Sue C. McDowell-McClelland
Sue C. McDowell-McClelland, 51, of Hutchinson, died June 13, 1999,
in Payne County, Oklahoma.
She was born June 13, 1948, at Great Bend, the daughter of Herman
B. and Dortha Mae Donner McDowell. A Hutchinson resident since 1956,
she was a former CNA/home health aide with Wichita Independent Living
Center.
On August 30, 1965, she married Garry L. Ward at Hutchinson. He
died August 3, 1984.
Survivors include: a son, Tim Ward, Hutchinson; a daughter, Jamie
Sue Atchison, Medicine Lodge; a brother Harlan McDowell, Hutchinson;
five sisters, Delila 'Dee' Freer, Hutchinson, Linda White and Bonnie
Keller, both of Arlington, Cathy Valleau, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Nancy
Foster, Wichita; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Bobby Lee Ward.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 18, 1999, at Elliott
Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. W.C. Tillman presiding.

Tanya Dawn Meritt
Tanya Dawn Meritt, 20, died May 23, 1999 in an automobile accident.
She was born July 25, 1978 at Wakita, Oklahoma, the daughter of Don
and Connie Crain Meritt. She started to school in Pond Creek and
moved to Cherokee, Oklahoma, when she was in the second grade. She
graduated from Cherokee High School in 1997. She was a cheer leader
in grade school and junior high school. She took gymnastics in grade
school and was a member of the Salt Fork Zoomers. She was also a
member of the Girl Scouts, Order of Rainbow Girls, FHA, FFA and
played softball.
At the time of her death she was living in Medicine Lodge and
working in Norwich.
She is survivied by her companion, Chris Parker and son, Dalton
Dale Parker of the home; her mother, Connie Meritt of Cherokee;
two brothers, Topny Meritt, Lahoma, Oklahoma, and Larry Meritt,
Enid, Oklahoma; a sister, Natasha Meritt, Cherokee; paternal
grandparents, Wayne and Olive Meritt, Enid.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1992 and her maternal
grandparents, Ray and Nellie Crain.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at the
Cherokee First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland Youngberg
officiating. Burial was in McKeeman Cemetery, near Jefferson, under
the direction of the Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee, Oklahoma.

Kathryn C. Clark
Kathryn C. Clark, 90, died July 22, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical
Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born May 13, 1908, at Coldwater, the daughter of Harvey E. and
Ethel VonSchriltz Myers. A longtime Medicine Lodge resident, she was a
retired school teacher.
She was a 56-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Lorraine Chapter
No. 39, Medicine Lodge, the HDU and several bridge clubs.
In 1934, she married Burton E. "Burt" Clark at Pratt. He died in 1976.
Survivors include: a son, Jerry B. Clark, Tulsa, Oklahoma; two brothers,
Claude Myers, Ashville, North Carolina, and Harvey Myers, Sublette; two
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 25, 1998, at First Christian
Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in
Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Idris E. Fausett Cohoe
Idris E. Fausett Cohoe, 88, of Hazelton, died June 21, 1999,
at Riverside Hospital, Wichita.
She was born May 11, 1911, at Hazelton, the daughter of
Fredrick B. and Mary Ethel Pfaff. She graduated from Hazelton
High School. She was a lifetime Barber County resident.
She belonged to the Quilting Club, Hazelton, and a lifetime
member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hazelton and later
Medicine Lodge.
On February 21, 1931, she married H.A. "Jack" Fausett. He
died September 11, 1972. In 1973, she married Claude Cohoe at
Medicine Lodge. He died July 6, 1982.
Survivors include: two daughters, Jackie Wright, Medicine
Lodge, and Paula Marteney, Tucson, Arizona; three sisters,
Arlene Pereau, Irvine, California, Dorothy Hoover, Colorado
Springs, Colorado, and Shirley Turner, Anaheim, California;
five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Curtis
and Kenneth Pfaff; and a sister, Reva Anderson.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, 1999, at Fisher
Funeral Home Chapel, Kiowa, with the Rev. Bill Dyar presiding.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton.

Ernest Burton Woodward
Ernest Burton Woodward, 92, died June 17, 1999, at Forest Hill
Convalescent Center.
He was born February 3, 1907, at Medicine Lodge, the son of
James Ernest and Cora Burton Woodward. A graduate of Kansas State
University with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He was
formerly employed by County Engineers in Barber and Smith counties,
Kansas. United States War Department, Surface Combustion Corp,
and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
He was a member of Ascention Lutheran Church.
He is survivied by his wife of 56 years Edith.
Other survivors include: adopted daughters, Patricia (James)
Wilson, San Jose, California, and Diane (Daniel) Smith, Nazareth,
Pennsylvania; a brother, Reb (Ruth), Mt. Vernon, Illinois; brother-in-law Roy Crist, Atwood; grandchildren, Shawn and Dina Smith;
great-granddaughter Danielle Crespe; devoted friends Fred and
Ruth Ann Helser and Ruth Cummings; five nephews and nieces; several
great-nephews and great-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Leona Crist;
and nephew Kevin Crist.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 21, 1999, at Ascension
Lutheran Church. Interment Glen Rest Memorial Estates.

Myrtle 'Nev' McKeever Whelan
Myrtle 'Nev' McKeever Whelan, 103, died March 3, 1996,
at Attica Long Term Care Facility, Attica.
She was born January 31, 1893, at Sharon, the daughter
of John Nicholas and Mary Laura Clough McKeever. She was
the fourth of ten children. A Sharon resident for most of
her life, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and St.
Boniface Altar Society, both of Sharon.
On September 26, 1915, she married Robert Henry Whelan at
Sharon. He died May 31, 1977.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert R., Chohkio, Minnesota,
and Gene, Medicine Lodge; two daughters, Marie Underwood,
Kingman, and Joyce Botts, Mattoon, Illinois; a brother, Ray
McKeever, Salem, Oregon; a sister, Lois Brock, Medicine Lodge;
13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 6, 1996, at St.
Boniface Catholic Church, Sharon. Burial was in the St. Boniface
Cemetery.

Patricia Teer
Patricia Teer, 58, died March 3, 1996, at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 21, 1937, at Wichita, the daughter of
Albert Sr. and Grace Benbow Grimes. A Medicine Lodge
resident for 25 years, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Medicine
Lodge.
On March 11, 1952, she married Marvin Teer at Wichita.
He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Edward, Medicine Lodge;
two daughtrs, Deborah Dutton and Rebecca Teer; both of
Medicine Lodge; four brothers, Albert Jr., Gary and Bob
Grimes, all of Wichita, and Edward Duncan, San Francisco,
California; two sisters, Ruth Williams, Harrah, Oklahoma,
and George-Ann Lawerence, Wichita; six grandchildren; and
a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 5, 1996, at
First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev.
Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery,
Medicine Lodge.

Mildred Cushenbery Hart
Mildred Hart, 78, died Tuesay evening February 20, 1997, at
her home in Delta, Colorado.
She was born July 11, 1917, to Jesse and Lillian Schloetzer
Cushenbery near Crisfield. She spent her childhood in Sharon,
and graduated from Sharon Rural High School, in 1937. She
attended business college in Hutchinson.
She married Allen Hart on June 30, 1938, in Medicine Lodge.
Shortly thereafter, they moved to Gunnison, Colorado, where
they lived until 1990 when they moved to Delta, Colorado. He
survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Paul Wayne of Atlanta and
Vikki; two daughters, Janice Neale and husband Dick of Delta
and Judi Frank and husband Ted or Orcutt, California; two
brothers, Donald Cushenbery of Omaha, Nebraska and Wilbur
Cushenbery of Casper, Wyoming; eight grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Garnet Mesa Baptist Church
in Delta on February 24, 1996 with burial in the Delta City
Cemetery.

Jerry L. Ford Sr.
Jerry L. Ford Sr, 51, died June 14, 1999, at Pratt.
He was born April 21, 1948, at Nashville, Kansas, the son of
Laverne and Rena Lee Thompson Ford. A lifetime Pratt County
resident, he was a manager of the Super 8 Motel at Pratt.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as
a boatswain's mate third class on the USS Serrano.
On November 25, 1966, he married Marsha Ann Culver at
Kingman. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Jerry Jr., Macksville,
and Jeff, Pratt; three brothers, Mike Detwiler, Iuka, Lendl
and Robert Detwiler, both of Enid, Oklahoma; and a grandson,
Jerry L. Ford III.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Justin Lee;
and a sister, Judy Ford Foster.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Isabel
United Methodist Church, Isabel, with Stanley Sears and the
Rev. Jim Dieker presiding. Burial was in Isabel Cemetery, Isabel,
with military honors conducted by a detachment from Fort Riley.

Winifrede E. Freeman
Winifrede E. Freeman, 84, died January 18, 1998, at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge.
She was born January 5, 1914, at Medicine Lodge, the daughter of
David Ralph and Myrtle Warren Watkins. She was a resident of Barber
County most of her life. A retired Elementary School teacher, she
taught 41 years in Barber County schools.
She was a past member of KNEA, NEA, and local Teachers Association.
She belonged to United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge.
On December 6, 1936, she married Clair Freeman at Medicine Lodge.
He died January 12, 1939.
Survivors include: two brothers, Glenn Watkins, Colorado Springs,
Colorado, and David Watkins, Kingman; and a sister Corrine Watkins,
Medicine Lodge.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 21, 1998 at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge, with John Hamm presiding. Burial
was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Alice Louise Bailey
Alice Louise Bailey, 81, died June 8, 1999, at Hodgeman County
Long Term Care Center, Jetmore.
She was born October 24, 1917, in Clark County, the daughter
of Frantz and Nellie Rose Betschart. A lifetime Jetmore resident,
she was a homemaker and beautician.
She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, the Extension
Homemakers Unit, and was a 4-H leader.
On February 12, 1947, she married W. Chester Bailey at Dalhart,
Texas. He died July 7, 1982.
Survivors include: two sons, Bill, Medicine Lodge, and John,
Watonga, Oklahoma; a daughter Barbara Whipple, Offerle; a brother,
Calvin Betschart, Idaho; a sister, Ruby Smith, Ashland; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Forrest, Floyd,
Carl and Lester; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 11, 1999, at United Methodist
Church, Jetmore, with the Revs. Gary Winget and Mitch Reece presiding.
Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

Cora McCracken
Cora McCracken died at Stollwood Convalescent Hospital at
age 92 on February 23, 1996.
Her husband, Boyd McCracken, preceded her in death in 1979.
Cora was born in Medicine Lodge in 1903, and moved to
Vallejo, California in 1937. She lived and worked in Vallejo
until her retirement from Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1969.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Vallejo and
Woodland; moving to Woodland in 1979.
She is survived by her daughter Virginia Wilson and husband
Robert Wilson of Woodland; grandsons Hugh Wilson and wife
Lisa of Green Valley, Stephen Wilson of Meeker, Colorado, Gary
Wilson and wife Nancie of Woodland; granddaughter Luann McAnelly and husband Clifford of Woodland; and seven great-grandchildren: Hugh, Matthew, Joshua, Jacob, Ethan, Ginny Lou and
Cliffy.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Kraft Brothers in Woodland, California. Services were held Wednesday, February 28,
1996, at Kraft Brothers Chapel. Burial was at Monument Hill
Memorial Park in Woodland, California.
