Myra Elizabeth Esser
Myra Elizabeth Esser, 88, died Dec. 7, 1996, at High Plains
Retirement Village, Lakin.
She was born Feb. 16, 1908, at Medicine Lodge, the daughter
of George and Ada Mary Mounsey Mounsey. She was a graduate of
Medicine Lodge High School and Southwestern College, Winfield.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Martha
Circle of the church, the Golden Agers, the Community Club,
and the American Legion Auxiliary, all at Medicine Lodge.
On May 31, 1941, she married Allen Charles Esser at Medicine
Lodge. He died Sept. 19, 1980.
Survivors include: two sons, George C. Esser, Deerfield, and
Robert A. Esser, Riverton, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Stacey
Pollart, Jayna Bahntge, Robyn Beers and Justin Esser; and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 13, 1996, at the
United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Jim
Godbey presiding. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery, Medicine
Lodge.

Doris M. Flatin
Doris M. Flatin, 69, died March 30, 1997 at her home in Green River, Wyo.
She had been in ill health the past four years.
She was born July 9, 1927 in Wendell, Minn., the daughter of the late
Knute and Mabel Pladsen Pikop. She attended schools in Minnesota. A resident
of Green River from 1980 to 1989, she moved to Kansas, returning to Green
River in July of 1996.
She was a member of the First Assembly of God.
She married Edwin Louis Flatin in Minnesota. He died in December of 1970.
Survivors include: a son, Larry Flatin; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy
and Jerry Hill of Green River, Wyo., six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation took place at the Vase White Mountain Crematory in Rock Springs.
Inurnment was in Topeka, Kan.
Vase Funeral Chapel, Rock Springs, Wyo. was in charge of arrangements.
Ronald Eugene 'Gene' Schulte
Ronald Eugene "Gene" Schulte, 64, died March 30, 1997, at his home.
He was born Sept. 8, 1932, at Pratt, the son of August and Rose Keiter
Schulte. A Pratt resident for four years, coming from Wichita, he was
a retired hydraulic specialist sales representative.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Pratt.
On Oct. 13, 1995, he married Yvonne Johnson at Pratt. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Brad, Chicago, and Mark, Wichita; two
stepsons, Mike Stivers and Pat Stivers, both of Pratt; a stepdaughter,
Suzan Patton, Pratt; three brothers, Bob, Wichita, August, Russel and Ed,
Yukon, Okla.; three sisters, Connie Mobley, Wichita, Peggy Bradley, Medicine
Lodge, and Melva Scarbrough, Pratt; six grandchildren; and four step-grand
children.
Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at Sacred Heart Church,
Pratt, with Father Ted Skalsky presiding. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery,
Pratt.

George B. Throckmorton
George B. Throckmorton, 95, died Nov. 30, 1996, at
Friendship Manor, Kiowa.
He was born May 6, 1901, at Capron, Okla., the son
of Oscar F. and Cora L. Hopkins Throckmorton. A Kiowa
resident since 1994, formerly of Capron and Burlington,
Okla., he was a farmer and carpenter.
He was a member of the Capron United Methodist Church
at Capron, Okla.
On Nov. 28, 1928, he married Myrle A. 'Sally' Wilcox
at Alva, Okla. She died Sept. 28, 1994.
Survivors include: two sons, Emil R., Oklahoma City,
Okla., and George Eldon, Enid, Okla.; a daughter, Bonita
Somerhalder, Burlington, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and
eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1996, at
Capron United Methodist Church, Capron, Okla., with the
Rev. Carolyn Murrow presiding. Burial was in the Capron
Cemetery.

Florence Wells
Florence Wells, 96, died Nov. 26, 1996, at Kiowa district
Hospital.
She was born Oct 19, 1900, in Barber County, the daughter
of Dwight P. and Sarah C. Boyer Mills. A Kiowa resident since
1978, moving from Aetna, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church, Kiowa
On Dec. 2, 1921, she married Vernon D. Wells at Wichita.
He died Dec. 15, 1969.
Survivors include: four daughters, Marion Carthrae, Kiowa,
Elaine Tyler, Wichita, Anne Jackson, Belpre, and Ellen Circle,
Ozark, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 2
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service were held Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996, at the
Southern Babtist Church, Kiowa, with Pastor Alan Locke pre-
siding. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Chad L. Blackwell
Chad L. Blackwell, 32, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,
passed away on December 19, 1996, at the Broward
Medical Center. Chad died of complications from
a car accident the morning of December 17, 1996.
Chad was born in Winfield, Kan., and had been
a Fort Lauderdale resident since 1984. Chad
graduated from high school as Shawnee Mission
Northwest in Lenexa, and attended college at the
North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston
Salem, N.C. Chad began his dancing career with
the Miller-Marley School of Dance in Kansas City.
From there he danced with the Forst Lauderdale
Ballet Company, Opryland, in Nashville, Tenn.,
Lotto World in Seoule, Korea, Beauty and the
Beast at MGM/Disney World, Orlando, Fla. and the
musical, Cats in Hamburg, Germany. Chad appeared
twice on the television show, Star Search, and
was a finalist in 1993.
Chad will be sadly missed by his father, Lee
Blackwell, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., his mother,
Jackie Snodgrass, Arkansas City, Kan., his sister,
Jennifer Blackwell, Atlanta, Ga., and his grand-
mother, Maude Blackwell, Medicine Lodge, as well
as aunts and uncles and many cousins, along with
a host of friends from all over the world.
A celebration of Chad's life took place at the
Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on
December 21, 1996. A special performance of the
musical, Cats, will be held in his honor on
December 30 in Hamburg, Germany.
Donna Lorene Clarke
Donna Lorene Clarke, 79, died Dec. 14, 1996, at Cedar
Crest Manor, Medicine Lodge.
She was born March 19, 1917, in Barber County, the
daughter of Ernest H. and Nelle F. Shanks McKaig. A
lifetime Medicine Lodge resident, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Christian Church, she
taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir, all
in Medicine Lodge. She was a member of the Kansas Farm
Bureau, the Forest City Ladies Aid, a 4-H leader, and
a member of the Mingona Farm Bureau.
On May 5, 1935, she married Dale Arthur Clarke at
Medicine Lodge. He died Feb. 7, 1994.
Survivors include: a daughter, Esther F. Hudson,
Haysville; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grand-
children.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, at
First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev.
Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery,
Medicine Lodge.

Elmer William Conner
Elmer William Conner, 90, died Dec. 22, 1996, at
Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 24, 1906, in Barber County, the
son of Andrew J. and Maidie I. DeArmond Conner. A
Medicine Lodge resident for most of his life, he
was a production superintendent for Olsen Oil
Company.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Delta
Lodge #77 A.F.&A.M., Royal Arch and Lorraine Chapter
No. 39 Order of Eastern Star, all of Medicine Lodge,
Scottish Rite, York Rite, Consistory, Wichita, and
Shrine AKDAR Temple, Tulsa, Okla.
On Jan 26, 1925, he married D. Violet Davis at
Medicine Lodge. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, E.E. "Gene", Dewey,
Okla.; two daughters, Maida Anne Holser, Medicine
Lodge, and Esther Firth, Oklahoma City, Okla.; 14
grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-
great-grandchildren.

at United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Godbey
presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine
Lodge.

Kathryn Eileen Johnson
Kathryn Eileen Johnson, 49, died Dec. 25, 1996, at
the Columbia-Aurora Presbyterian Hospital, Aurora,
Colo.
She was born Jan. 3, 1947, at St. Louis, Mo., the
daughter of Clemel L. and Margaret E. Bailey Sawyer.
She was a reesident of Auburn-Washburn (Topeka) from
1969 to 1986 moving then to Washington County. She
had moved from there to Medicine Lodge in 1992. She
received her BA from Wichita State in 1970 and her
Masters at Kansas State in 1986. She was a school
teacher and librarian.
She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at
Wichita State and the Greater Barber County Historical
Association in Medicine Lodge.
On Dec. 27, 1969, she married Darly L. Johnson at
Wichita. He survives.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, at
the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with Rev.
Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in the Old Mission
Cemetery, Wichita.

Cathleen Fay Stricker
Cathleen Fay Stricker, 58, died Dec. 24, 1996, at
Wichita.
She was born July 23, 1938, at Great Bend, the
daughter of Peter and Bertha A. Hoffman Schlegel. A
resident of Wichita since 1975, she had lived most
of her life in Kiowa. She was a homemaker and a
secretary.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church
in Kiowa.
On June 20, 1958, she married Edward John Stricker
at Kiowa. He died Feb. 8, 1989.
Survivors include: three sons, Richard Allen Stricker,
Andover, Michel Pete Stricker, Wilmer, Texas, and
Robert Scott Stricker Wichita; a daughter, Lori Ann
Jones, Wichita; parents, Pete and Bertha Schlegel,
Kiowa, grandmother, Marie Hoffman, Fort Collins, Co.;
and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 27, 1996,
at the United Methodist Church in Kiowa, with the
Rev. Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in Riverview
Cemetery, Kiowa.

Bill E. Scott
Bill E. Scott, 76, died Dec. 25, 1996 at
Kiowa.
He was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Barber County,
the son of Warren Ed and Cora M. Hardison
Scott. He was a Wichita businessman and
insurance adjuster. He lived in Wichita for
34 years, moving to Kiowa in 1990.
He was a member of the United Methodist
Church in Kiowa.
On Aug 16, 1969, he married Virginia Vogel
Curfman at Wichita. She survives.
Other survivors include: six sons, John
Scott, Kansas City, Kans., Larry Curfman,
Eagle, Idaho, Bruce, Rex and Chuck Curfman,
all Wichita, and Byron Curfman, Telluride,
Colo., three daughters, Pat Scott, Jacksonville,
Fla., Kimberly Kanne, Foley, Minn., and Kay
Wealand, Elmdale; 21 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.

Thelma L. Griswold
Thelma L. Griswold, 86, died Jan. 7, 1997 at
Anthony.
She was born Feb. 1, 1910, in Barber County,
the daughter of Van and hattie Valentine Utter-
back. A longtime Anthony resident, she was a
retired bookkeeper.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
On Oct 15, 1930, she married John F. Griswold
at Medicine Lodge. He died Dec. 29, 1966.
Survivors include: a son, Jim, Lake Winnbago,
Mo., four sisters, Ora Caywood, Goddard, Imogene
Dornon, Argonia, Helen Wood, Farmington, N.M. and
Laverne Jelinek, Bluff City; three grandchildren;
five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
and four setp-great-grandchildren.

Violet B. Hart, 94, died Jan 11, 1997 at Good
Samaritan Nursing Home, Winfield.
She was born Dec. 14, 1902, in Woods, County,
Okla., the daughter of Eusebius N. and Nancy
Elizabeth Berry Hart. A lifelong Kiowa resident,
she was a secretary for the United Methodist
church.
She was a member of United Methodist Church,
Kiowa.
Survivors include: four nephews, Vernon Hart,
Medicine Lodge, Harry Roberts, Knoxville, Tenn.,
Louis Roberts, Memphis, Tenn., and Bethel Snyder,
Sun City, Calif.; and eight nieces, Lorena Garman,
Kiowa, Naomi Ives, Wichita, Norma Fincher and
Eleanor Shriner, both of Medicine Lodge, Judy
Johnson, Winfield, Ramona Nersund, Apache Junction,
Ariz., Mabel Snyder, Cunningham, and Maxine Hart,
Fall River.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997,
at United Methodist Church, Kiowa, with the Rev. Bill
Dyar presiding. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery,

Alice L. Hill
Alice L. Hill, 82, died Jan 6, 1997 at
Oklahoma City, Okla.
She was born Sept 25, 1914, in Woods
County, Okla., and the daughter of James
Wilbur and Margaret Murphy Thomas. A
Hardtner resident, formerly of Wichita,
Haysville, and Kiowa, she was a retired
Beech Aircraft employee.
She was a member of First Christian
Church, Haysville.
In 1933 she married Herbert C. Hill in
Woods County, Okla. He died March 25, 1966.
Survivors include: a son, Patrick, Clinton,
Mo.; two daughters, Crysta Jean Keltgen,
Independence, Mo., and Mary Ann Gallon,
Oklahoma City, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and
16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan 8,
1997, at United Methodist Church, Hardtner,
with the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding.
Burial was in the Hardtner Cemetery, Hardtner.

Darrel L. Criswell
Darrel L. Criswell, 74, died Jan 18, 1997, at Scott
County Hospital, Scott City.
He was born May 21, 1922, in Beaver County, Okla.
the son of James Oscar and Cora Ethel Boren Criswell.
A Scott City resident since 1973, coming from Medicine
Lodge, he was a self-employed painting contractor.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the
American Legion Post No. 183, both at Scott City.
On May 17, 1949, he married Edith M. McCoy at McCook,
Neb. She survives.
Other survivors include: four daughters, Diane Simpson,
San Antonio, Texas, Carolyn West, Cherly Turley, and Mary
Comba, all of Scott City; three brothers, Norman, Hobbs,
N.M., Norval, Seymour, Tenn., and Larry, Odessa, Texas;
a sister, Doris Davis, Balko, Okla.; 11 grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.

Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with Father Michael
Helms presiding. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery,

Hugh R. 'Punk' Cox
Hugh R. "Punk" Cox, 84, died Feb 8, 1997, at
Friendship Manor Nursing Home, Kiowa.
He was born Aug. 30, 1912, at Sharon, the son
of Joseph and Elizabeth Garner Cox. A lifetime
resident of Barber County, he was a rural mail
carrier.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church
at Kiowa, past president of the Barber County
School Board, and was a Past Master of Masonic
Lodge No. 278, Midian Shrine, and the Wichita
Consistory.
On July 31, 1933, he married Doris Newkirk at
Cherokee, Okla. She survives.
Other survivors include; a son, Larry Cox,
Texas City, Texas; a daughter, Jerry Roy, Bryan,
Texas; a brother Maurice Cox, Wichita; a sister,
Opal Henderson, Wichita; three grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb 9, 1997
at the United Methodist Church in Kiowa, with the
Rev. Bill Dyar presiding. Cremation will follow
the service.

William D. 'Bill' Green
William D. 'Bill' Green, 51, New Bern, N.C., died
Feb 7, 1997, at Craven Medical Center, New Bern.
He was born Feb 21, 1945, in Moody, Mo., the son
of Noble J. and Beulah M. Harding Page. A long-time
Kiowa resident, he was an electrician
He married Mary E. Lancaster. She survives in
New Bern, N.C.

New Bern; his mother, Beulah Page, Kowa; father,

Ada R. Hartman
Ada R. Hartman, 96, former Kiowa resident, died
Feb 3, 1997, at the Eureka, Ill. Apostolic Christian
Home.
She was born Jan 17, 1901, at Granby, Mo., the
daughter of Ben and Marie Pfister Farney. A longtime
resident of Kiowa, she had moved to Fairbury, Ill.,
in 1953. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church.
On May 3, 1925, she married Godfrey Miller at
Burlington, Okla. He died May 8, 1937. On Oct. 25,
1953, she married Dave Hartman at Burlington, Okla.
He died Nov 8, 1971.
Survivors include: two sons Godfrey C. Miller, El
Dorado, and Dr. Robert J. Miller, Peoria, Ill.; two
stepsons, Melvin Hartman, Fairbury, Ill., and Harvey
Hartman, Watseka, Ill.; a daughter, Doris Bahr,
Sabetha; four stepdaughters, Mable Springer and
Lucille Schurter, both Ft. Scott, Ruth Hartman,
Peoria, Ill., and Evelyn Malaimare, Simi Valley, Ca.;
two brothers, Dr. Joe Farney, Sabetha, and Ben
Farney, Spring Hill; five sisters, Mary Aberle,

Nina Mae King
Nina Mae King, 90, died Feb 5, 1997, at
Wichita.
Formerly of Medicine Lodge, she was a
retired special education teacher for the
grade school.
She is survived by a son, Charles, Wichita;
7 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 10,
1997, at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel, Wichita,
with Dr. Ted Jacobs officiating. Burial was
in Resthaven Gardens of Memories, Wichita.
Wilbur F. 'Bill' Larson
Wilbur F. 'Bill' Larson, 93, died Jan. 19, 1997, at
Attica Nursing Home, Attica.
He ws born Oct. 2, 1903, at Concordia, the son of
John F. and Emma B. Larson. He attended Cloud County
Schools and graduated from Concordia High School. He
was a farmer in Cloud, Republic and Clay counties. He
retired and moved to Concordia in January 1968. In
November 1992 he moved to Medicine Lodge. On Oct 26,
1994, he moved to the nursing home in Attica.
He was a member of The Baptist Church, Concordia,
served on the school boards, township boards, Farm
Bureau, Extension Board, Co-op Elevator Board, Soil
Conservation Board and Cloud County Fair Board.
On Oct. 9, 1928 he married Esther A. Thomas at
Concordia. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Bob, Medicine Lodge;
three daughters, Emalyn Wartman, Johnson, Joyce Hansen,
Colby, and Janet Henning, Berryton; a brother, Howard,
Miltonvale; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, with the Rev.

Boyd E. Phillips
Boyd E. Phillips, 73, died Feb 6, 1997, at St. Mary's
Mercy Hospital, Enid, Okla.
He was born April 7, 1923, in southwestern Barber County,
the son of Everett and Nancy Septer Phillips. He attended
the Lake City school system and graduated from high school
in 1941. An Alva resident, having lived at Corvallis, Ore.,
Nucla, Colo., Grove, Okla., and Bernice, Okla., he worked
as a machinist, owning and operating the Phillips Machine
Co. in Nucla until he retired in 1978.
He attended the United Methodist Church, was a 50 year
member of the Norwood, Colo., Masonic Lodge No. 111, and
a life member of the Scottish Rite consistory, Grand
Junction, Colo., Disabled American Veterans and Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 1362, Pratt. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II.
On April 5, 1947, he married Laurice Hiett at Vancouver,
Wash. She died Dec 11, 1975. On Feb 23, 1982, he married
Edna Mae Slack Powell at Las Vegas, Nev. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Everett and Jay, both
of Elko, Nev.; a duaghter, Janice Markely, Oak Harbor,
Wash.; a stepson, Roger Powell, Kiowa; a stepdaughter, Kay
Lynn Glass, Sturgeon, Missouri; a brother, Ivan, Pratt; a
sister, Esther Freeman, Medicine Lodge; 15 grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service wre held Sunday, Feb 9, 1997, at Wharton
Funeral Chapel, Alva, with the Rev. David S.H. Cressman
presiding. Burial was in the Lake City Cemetery, Lake City,
Kan., with military graveside service by Pratt Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post No. 1362.
Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church at
Alva or at Lake City in his memory.

Jeannine Vincent Riney, 61, died Feb 8, 1997, at Via
Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus,
Wichita.
She was born June 9, 1935, at Hardtner, the daughter
of Alanzo and Mildred V. Walker Vincent. A resident of
Medicine Lodge since 1982, moving from Ingalls, she
was a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church,
Medicine Lodge, and Faith Circle of the church. She
was the organist and pianist at the church, and had
also served in that capacity at Pierceville Federated
Church and Ingalls Federated Church. She had belonged
to Rainbow Girls in her high school days.
On April 1, 1956, she married Glen L. Riney in
Medicine Lodge. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Alan Riney, Cimarron;
three daughters, Glenda Davis and Diane Kelley, both
Cimarron, and Cindy Kreutzer, Valley Center; two sisters,
Veldeen Moss, Medicine Lodge, and Patsy Eytcheson,
Augusta; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997 at
the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, with the
Rev. Jim Godbey presiding. Burial was in Highland
Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Marie Elizabeth Stockwell
Marie Elizabeth Stockwell, 73, died Jan 30, 1997, at
Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 7, 1923, at Danville, the daughter
of Christopher C. and Zelma M. White Ogden. A Medicine
Lodge resident for nearly all her life, she was an
optometrist's assistant and a homemaker.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, the
Church Prayer Circle, the Leisure Center, Veterans of
Foreigh Wars Auxiliary, Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary and the S.W. Council on aging.
On Dec. 25, 1941, she married Bruce Boyd Stockwell at
Anthony. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Larry B., Mariposa,
Calif., and Kelly D., Medicine Lodge; a daughter, Vickie
M. Keever, Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren; five
step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb 4, 1997, at
United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev.
Jim Godbey presiding. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery
Medicine Lodge.

Emma E. Schrock
Emma E. Schrock, 90, died Feb 4, 1997, at
Friendship Manor Nursing home, Kiowa.
She was born Dec 13, 1906, at Princeville,
Ill., the daughter of Albert and Lydia Harter
Herrimann. A Hazelton resident since 1931,
she was a homemaker and seamstress.
She was a member of United Methodist Church,
Kiowa, and United Methodist Women.
On April 8, 1931, she married George H.
Schrock at Hiawatha. He died Aug. 10, 1992.
Survivors include: two sons, LaMoine, Hazelton,
and Elwyn, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; a brother,
Ralph Herrmann, Sabetha; a sister, Irene Isch,
Sabetha; three grandchildren; three step-grand
children; seven great-grandchildren; and five
step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service were held Friday, Feb 7, 1997
at United Methodist Church, Kiowa, with the Rev.
Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in the Riverview
Cemetery, Kiowa.

Home, Kiowa.
Otto Henry Thom
Otto Henry Thom, 91, died Dec 27, 1996, at Cedar
Crest Manor, Medicine Lodge.
He was born Dec. 21, 1905, at Ravenna, Neb., the
son of C.T. and Mary Peterman Thom. A Medidicine
Lodge resident since 1994, moving from Isabel, he
was a farmer and rancher.
On Feb 26, 1931, he married Ruth Louise Monrad
at Mesa, Ariz. She died Oct. 17, 1991.
Survivors include: a son, Bob Thom, Derby, a
daughter, Phyllis N. Roth, Mission; six grand-
children; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan 11, 1997,
at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge,
with the Rev. Jim Matthews presiding.
Memorials may be sent to the Isabel Senior Center
or to the Medicine Lodge Library, both in care of
the funeral home.
Edith L. Trantham
Edith L. Trantham, 89, died Jan 22, 1997, at Medicine
Lodge Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec 17, 1907, at Gage, Okla., the daughter
of Darius V. and May I. Axtell Woodward. A resident of
Barber County for most of her life, she was a school
teacher.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the
Presbyterian Woman, Golden Agers, and the Leisure Center,
all of Medicine Lodge. She also belonged to the Kansas
Teachers Association, the NEA and the BPW. She was very
active in getting the Leisure Center started.
In 1927 she married Ben F. Mullikin in Medicine Lodge.
They divorced in 1947. On July 19, 1948, she married Bud
Trantham in Anthony. He died Dec 22, 1974.
Survivors include: a son, Ben F. Mullikin Jr., Corpus
Cristie, Texas; two daughters, Virginia M. Chance,
Medicine Lodge, and Phyllis M. Inslee, Ada, Okla.; two
sisters, Virginia Measday and Joyce Westbrooks, both of
Deming, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren;
and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan 25, 1997, at
the First Presbyterian Church in Medicine Lodge, with
Mr. Wayne DeVries presiding. Burial was in the Highland
Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Robert Louis Thompson
Robert Louis Thompson, 73, died Feb 1, 1997,
at Columbia Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
He was born Oct. 1, 1923, at Perth, the son
of George Marion and Jesse Crisler Thompson.
A Coldwater resident since 1975, moving from
Sun City, he was a retired track foreman for
the Santa Fe Railroad.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both at
Wellington. He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War II.
On April 19, 1973, he married Frances Mc
Grath at Coldwater. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters,
Susan Maddox, Wichita, and Sheryll Tusinger,
Tishomingo, Okla.; a stepson, Stephen McGrath,
San Diego, Calif.; three step-daughters, Shirley
Stone, Lake City, Donna Young, Great Bend, and
Mickey Raye, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Elsie
Scriven, Wellington; four grandchildren; five
step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and
four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb 5,
1997, at Hatfiled-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater,
with the Rev. Virginia Carthrae presiding.
Burial was in Bethany Cemetery, Perth.

Nutrition Site in care of the funeral home.
Millie O. Lawrence Wallace
Millie O. Lawrence Wallace, 88, died Feb 8, 1997, at
Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
She was born April 14, 1908, at Melrose, the daughter
of Elmer E. and Eva Lyon Davis. A Medicine Lodge resident
since 1976, moving from Kingman, she was a school teacher
and homemaker.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the
Woman of Trinity, both at Medicine Lodge, and a former
member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Nashville.
In 1928, she married Albert Lawrence. He died in 1959.
In 1967, she married Claud Wallace. He died in 1971.
Survivors include: two sons, Kent E. Lawrence, Zapata,
Texas, and Layle D. Lawrence, Mount Morris, Pa.; a daughter,
Marilyn M. Lenkner, Hutchinson; a brother, Marvin Davis,
Lexington, S.C.; a sister, Aileen Kite, Baxter Springs;
five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb 10, 1997 at St.
John's Lutheran Church, Nashville, with the Rev. Paul
Beyer presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery in
Nashville.
Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home Medicine Lodge, was in
charge of arrangements.
Roy Cylvestor Zordel
Roy Cylvester Zordel, 61, died Feb 9, 1997 at Hays
Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays.
He was born June 23, 1935, at Ransom, the son of
Walter W. and Josie Clodfelter Zordel. He attended
Cyrus Country School, Ransom High School and Dodge
City Community College where he played football. A
lifetime Ransom resident, he was a foreman for Deines
Manufacturing Company in Ransom.
He was a member of Ransom Volunteer Fire Department
and Ness City Men's Bowling Associaton. He worked on
the chain crew for Ransom High School football games.
On July 31, 1954, he married Ellen Esther Fairbank
at Ransom. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Allen, Topeka,
and Michael, Medicine Lodge; two daughters, Tami
DuBois, Idaho Springs, Colo., and Julie Zordel, Dodge
City; three brothers, Walter Jr., Albert and August,
all of Ransom; four sisters, Anna Nora Freeman, Bucklin,
Lila Reeder, Dodge City, Ida Mae Decker, Hooker, Okla.,
and Dollie Shoupe, Missoula, Mont.; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb 12, 1997, at
United Methodist Church, Ransom, with the Rev. Wayne
Stephens and Pastor Marjorie Ediger presiding. Burial
was in the Ransom Cemetery.

Hays Medical Center, Oncology Department, Hays, both
in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.
Kenneth M. Armstrong
Kenneth M. Armstrong, 63, died Jan. 30, 1997, at his
home in Medicine Lodge.
He was born April 10, 1933, in Isabel, the son of
Earl E. and Marie Fetters Armstrong. A resident of
Medicine Lodge since 1961, moving from Sawyer, he was
a line-crew foreman for WestPlains Energy from 1961 to
1994.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, Medicine
Lodge, coached girl's softball, served on the Alva
Bible Chair Development Board, and was a bible teacher
and treasurer. He served with the U.S. Army during the
Korean Conflict.
On Sept. 13, 1953, he married Rosalee Hamm at Isabel.
She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Eric D., Isabel,
and Darrin S., Edmond, Okla.; a daughter, Deborah D.
Bryant, Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Jim, Isabel; three
sisters, Darlene Hamm, Pratt, Eunice Green, Anchorage,
Alaska, and Patricia Armstrong, Wichita; and 10 grand-
children.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at
the Church of Christ, Medicine Lodge, with John Hamm
and Hartsell Johnson presiding. Burial was in the
Isabel Cemetery.
