Virginia Nelle Wolgamott Alder
Virginia Nelle Wolgamott Alder, 75, died Nov. 12, 1999, at Bass
Hospital, Enid, Okla.
She was born Dec. 12, 1923, west of Hardtner, the daughter of
Lyman Ernest and Mable Hardin Wolgamott. She graduated from Hardtner
High School. A longtime Kiowa resident, moving to Amorita, Okla.,
she was a stenographer and bookkeeper.
She belonged to Burlington Christian Church and the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She married John Alder Jr. at Cherokee, Okla. He died in 1982.
Survivors include: a companion, Jack Martin, Stillwater; a brother,
Kenneth B. "Shorty" Wolgamott, Hardtner; two sisters, Doris Packard
Ames, Anthony, and Mabel Ruth Stranathan, Kiowa; and numerous nephews
and nieces.
She was proceded in death by seven brothers, Wayne, Willis, Wilfred,
Franics, Clifford, Donald Dean and George; and a sister, Mary Lee
Huston.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at United Methodist
Church, Hardtner, with Ron Olson presiding. Interment was in Hardtner
Cemetery.

American Cancer Society, both in care of Fisher Funeral Home, Kiowa.
Ada Mae Bush
Ada Mae Bush, 97, died Sept. 18, 1997, at Friendship Manor.
She was born Feb. 24, 1900, at Eskridge, the daughter of
Ruben and Edith Blankenship Murray. A Pratt resident since 1973,
moving from Isabel, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to First United Methodist Church, Pratt, the
Rebakah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary at Isabel.
On Dec. 24, 1941, she married John Allen Bush at Isabel. He
died in 1976.
Survivors include: two sisters, Geneva Morley and Blanch
Blackwelder, both of Wichita; a nephew, R.D. Wehling, Pratt; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, at Larrison
Mortuary, Pratt, with the Rev. Kendall Utt presiding. Burial was
in the Isabel Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church in Pratt
or in Isabel, in care of the mortuary.
Anna Lenora Campbell
Anna Lenora Campbell, 91, died Sept. 11, 1997, at Attica Long Term Care
Annex, Attica.
She was born Nov. 5, 1905, at Lookeba, Okla., the daughter of John L.
and Elizabeth Wadkins Keller. A Medicine Lodge resident from 1975 to 1989,
moving from Sun City, she had been an Attica resident for the past eight
years. She was a homemaker, had supervised the school cafeteria in Sun
City, was a nurse's aide at Pratt Hospital and was employed at Boeing
during World War II.
She belonged to Assembly of God Church, Medicine Lodge.
On Nov. 18, 1922, she married Samuel Grant Campbell at Kansas City, Mo.
He died April 23, 1984.
Survivors include: a son, J.L. Campbell, Wichita; a daughter, Rosa Mae
Miller, Fort Worth, Texas; five grandchildren; and 11 great=grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, in Sunnyside Cemetery,
Sun City, with the Rev. Jerry A. Yates presiding.

Alfred L. Adler
Alfred L. Adler, 83, died Sept. 12, 1197, at Kiowa.
He was born Aug. 22, 1914, at Cody, Neb., the son of John W. and Pearl
W. Huff Adler. A longtime Burlington resident, formerly of Kiowa, he was
a farmer, rancher and merchant, owning a drug store in Nash, Okla., and
Kiowa.
He belonged to Flying Aggies, Stillwater, Okla., and was a charter
member of the Lions Club in Nash.
On Nov. 22, 1935, he married Marie Schupbach at Cherokee, Okla. She
survives.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at Driftwood
Christian Church, Driftwood, Okla., with Rollin Boothby presiding.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa.

Joan M. Fielder
Joan M. Fielder, 61, died Aug. 26, 1997, at Harper Hospital.
She was born Nov. 19, 1935, at Loyal, Okla., the daughter of Carl
and Lula Elder Hoskins. A Gardner resident since 1964, formerly of
Medicine Lodge, she was a homemaker.
In March, 1951, she married Richard Fielder at Bentonville, Ark.
He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Ricky L. Fielder, Gardner; a
daughter, Janet M. McDougal, Emporia; three brothers, Donald Hoskins,
Keene, Texas, Leonard Hoskins, Lahoma, Okla., and Raymond Hoskins,
Arnett, Okla.; two sisters, Ilene Webber, Okeene, Okla., and Helen
Streber, Belle Vista, Ark.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services and burial was held Friday, Aug. 29, 1997 in
Harper Cemetery, Harper, with Ronnie Hoskins presiding. Elliott
Funeral Home, Harper, was in charge of arrangements.
Victor Austin Griswold
Victor Austin Griswold, 87, died Aug. 27, 1997, at Cedar Crest Manor,
Medicine Lodge.
He was born Feb. 6, 1910, at San Antonio, Texas, the son of Arthur
and Theresa Hawkins Griswold. He was raised in Canton, Pa. A Medicine
Lodge resident since 1949, he was a retired Barber County Soil Conser-
vationist, having worked for U.S. Dept of Agriculture for 45 years. He
was a Veteran of World War II, a retired Capt.
He was a member of the Silver Haired Legislature for six years and on
the Judicial selection committee for ten years. He belonged to the Lions
Club.
On Dec. 28, 1942, he married Lillian Trechter at Hoisington. She
Survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, John Griswold, Roland Heights, Calif.,
and Rick Griswold, Seattle; a daughter, Connie McColley, Wichita; a sister,
Jean Stores, Lakeville, Pa.; and a grandchild, Ryan McColley.
Graveside service was held Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Resthaven Gardens
of Memory, Wichita. A memorial service will be held at Holy Rosary Church,
Medicine Lodge, on Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at 11:00 a.m.

Beverly Dean Henderson
Beverly Dean Henderson, 48, died Sept. 16, 1997, at Lawrence
Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 9, 1948, at Hardtner, the daughter of James
D. and Carol Cline. A longtime resident of Lawrence, she attended
Deerhead Country School. She moved with her family to Medicine
Lodge in 1961 and graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in
1966. She attended Kansas State Teacher's College at Emporia for
two years and graduated from Fort Hays State College. She worked
in Gov. Robert Docking's office during his term in office and later
worked in the Institute for Public Policy in Business Research at
Black Hall at the University of Kansas for 20 years.
On July 24, 1993, she married Glenn E. Henderson. He survives.
Other survivors include: a stepson, Matt Henderson, of the home;
mother of Medicine Lodge; brother, Dave Cline, Sun City; and a
sister, Jean McCullough, Medicine Lodge.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at Rumsey-Yost
Funeral HOme, Lawrence. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence.

Tessie M. Hoover
Tessie M. Hoover, 87, died Sept. 6, 1997, at Sterling Presbyterian
Manor.
She was born July 1, 1910, at Everton, Mo., the daughter of William
H. and Alice Chambers Rogers. A Chase resident since 1945, she was a
homemaker.
She belonged to First Baptist Church, Chase.
On Sept. 13, 1931, she married Herbert C. Hoover at Lockwood, Mo. He
died Oct. 29, 1962.
Survivors include: five sons, Roy, Texhoma, Okla., Dale, Lyons, Rex
and Truman, both of Medicine Lodge, and Ray, Hutchinson; a daughter,
Alice Cassidy,Wichita; 22 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at Sillin Funeral
Home, Lyons, with the Rev. Bob Bethell presiding. Burial was in Lyons
Municipal Cemetery.

Dean Harding
Dean Harding, 61, died Sept. 17, 1997, at Wichita.
He was born Sept. 1, 1936, at Isabel, the son of Lyman T. and Lillie
Cirkel Harding.

Dean Harding, Wichita; a daughter, Deanene Marie Spater, Belton, Mo.;
and two sisters, Leona Muth, Wichita, and Lois Hare, Kimberling City,

Curt Douglas Kimberly
Curt Douglas Kimberly, 36, died Sept. 10, 1997, as the result of a farm
accident near Watonga, Okla.
He was born Oct. 26, 1960, near Cherokee, Okla., the son of Myron Claude
and Charleen Washburn Kimberly.
Survivors include: his mother, Alva; three sons, Charles Alan, David
Adam and Ernest Tee, all of Alva; two brothers, Bill Kimberly, Orange,
Calif., and DeWain Kimberly, Carmen, Okla.; four sisters, Betty Youvan,
Sterling, Del Lyon, Medicine Lodge, Dinell McCalip, Sand Springs, Okla.,
and Danett Wright, Collierville, Tenn.
Graveside service was held Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, in Haviland
Cemetery, with the Rev. Lawrence Lambert, Jr. presiding.

Alice Luty
Alice Luty, 95, died Aug. 25, 1997, at Friendship Manor, Kiowa.
She was born July 8, 1902, at Kiowa, the daughter of Charles E. and
Cesey Mae Burns Alberding. A lifetime Kiowa resident, she was a retired
manager of O.K. Co-op Grain Elevator.
She belonged to Kiowa United Methodist Church.
On Sept. 11, 1927, she married Horace T. Luty at Kiowa. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sisters-in-law, Bernice Piersall, Hardtner,
and Ida Luty, Kiowa; and seven nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, at the church, with
Rev. Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.

Matilda Thressa Lillieqvist
Matilda Thressa Lilleqvist, 102, died Aug. 25, 1997, at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 17, 1895, at Versailles, Mo., the daughter of Frank
and Caroline Karsick Kumberg. A resident of Medicine Lodge since 1989,
moving from the family farm near Sawyer, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Elm Mills HEU, Elm
Mills Card Club, and Stitch and Chatter Club, all of Medicine Lodge. She
had been manbed "Master Homemaker of the Year."
On Dec. 17, 1919, she married Walter R. Lillieqvist at Sawyer. He died
in 1971.
Survivors include: a son, Lucky E. Lillieqvist, Pratt; five daughters,
Laurene Johnson, Holtville, Calif., Ada M. Mitchell, Medicine Lodge, Pearl
A Baker, Cheyenne, Wyo., Corlena F. Hunt, Wichita, and Vera I. Hanneken,
Palm Desert, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 11
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at the church, with
the Revs. Jim Godbey and John Hamm presiding. Burial was in Highland
Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Martha E. Lovette
Martha E. Lovette, 92, died Aug. 25, 1997, at Friendship Manor, Kiowa.
She was born Dec. 4, 1904, in Edward County, the daughter of Norris A.
and Myrtle Gay Davis. A Kiowa resident since 1938, moving from Meade,
she was a homemaker and owned Lovette Drug.
She belonged to Congregational United Church of Christ, Pilgrim Daughters
and Eastern Star, all of Kiowa.
On June 13, 1928, she married Otto Lovette at Hutchinson. He died July 4,
1968.
Survivors include: a son, Stephen, Washington, D.C.; and two grandchildren,
David Lovette, Wichita, and Jackie Lovette, Seattle.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at the church, with the
Rev. Virgie Davis presiding. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa.

Nelma C. Lampe
Nelma C. Lampe, 83, died Sept. 1, 1997, at Kingman Community
Hospital.
She was born Jan. 19, 1914, at Lincolnville, the daughter of
Ernest and Rosa Lawrence Poppe. A longtime Nashville area resident,
she was a homemaker.
She belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and the
Dorcas Society, all of Nashville.
On Dec. 17, 1933, she married Lawrence W. Lampe at Radium. He
died July 7, 1968.
Survivors include: two sons, Don, Grove, Okla., and Dennis,
Edwardsville; three daughters, Twyla Harbison and Marlene Vierthaler,
both of Wichita, and Elaine Davidson, Comarron; 14 grandchildren; and
26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997, at the church,
with Pastor Paul Beyer presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Charles "Chuck" McGuire
Chuck was born May 19, 1925 at Sharon, Kan. to Charles and Grace
(Bindsall) McGuire. He died at Big Springs, Texas at age 72.
He served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife
Sue, his parents and two sisters, Edna McGuire and Opal Goldsmith
and a brother Lawrence.
Services were held at Odessa, Texas. Burial was in the Garber
Cemetery, Garber, Okla.
Tonkajo Mills McElyea
Tonka Mills McElyea, 72, died Aug. 28, 1997, at Medical Lodge, Goddard.
She was born May 21, 1925, five miles southeast of Lake City, the
daughter of Tempel H. and Mima L. Draper Mills. She graduated from Lake
City High School in 1943 as valedictorian of her class. After graduation
she attended Wichita State University. She was a sales supervisor of
National Gypsum Company in Medicine Lodge and transferred to Phoenix
in 1969 where they lived until ill health brought them back to Kansas
to be closer to family in May of this year.
She was a member and Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Lake
City; member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary in Medicine Lodge;
and member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in
Medicine Lodge and Phoenix.
On June 24, 1944, she married Wallace McElyea, a cadet in the Army Air
Corps, at Victorville Air Force Base, Victorville, Calif. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son and wife, Tim and Lee McElyea, Phoenix;
a daughter and husband, Robin and Kendall Warren, Wichita; a brother and
wife, Huston and Lois Mills, Lake City; six grandchildren; three great-
grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at United Methodist
Church, Lake City, with Pastor Chris Miller presiding. Burial was in Lake
City Cemetery.

Juanita I. Pollock
Juanita I. Pollock, 82, died Aug. 25, 1997, at Friendship Manor of
Anthony.
She ws born Aug. 15, 1915, at Anthony, the daughter of Perry and
Irene McCaulley Moore. A longtime Anthony resident, she was a home-
maker.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Anthony, Order of
Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge.
On Jan. 17, 1932, she married Charles R. Pollock at Medford, Okla.
He died March 19, 1966.
Survivors include: a son, Gene Pollock, Hazelton; a daughter, Sue
Waggoner, Monteauma; a brother, John Moore, Waldron; 10 grandchildren;
and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at the church,
with the Rev. Tom Marker and Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in
Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony.

Robert C. Simpson
Robert C. Simpson, 92, died Oct. 6, 1999, at his home in Medicine
Lodge.
He was born May 11, 1907, at Medicine Lodge, the son of Warren and
Mary Elizabeth Clarke Simpson. A lifetime Medicine Lodge resident, he
was a dirt contractor.
He belonged to the Roping Club, Medicine Lodge.
On March 29, 1930, he married Marjorie P. Rozzelle. She died in
1977.
Survivors include: two sons, Richard K., Lima, Peru, and Phillip
D., Medicine Lodge; three daughters, Phyllis J. Shelite, Pratt,
Evelyn R. Pierce, Liberal, and Mary K. Rucker, Sharon; 12 grandchildren;
28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee; a sister, Gladys Ware;
and two grandchildren, Tony Simpson and Al Pierce Jr.
Graveside service was held Sunday, October 10, 1999, in Highland
Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, with Ron Schwerdtfeger presiding.
Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge, was in charge of
arrangements.
Kayla Jean Price Vulgamore
Kayla Jean Price Vulgamore, 60, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at her
home in Clearwater, following a battle with cancer.
She was born Nov. 1, 1938, in LaCrosse, the daughter of Clovis Theron
and Mabel Schenk Price. She attended Mission Ridge Rural School and
Rozel Grade School.
She graduated from Rozel High School in 1956 and then attended Fort
Hays State College. She taught music at the Clearwater Elementary and
High Schools for several years. She was active in the Clearwater First
Christian Church music ministry for many years.
She belonged to the Resurection Lutheran Church in Haysville. She was
a lifetime member of Sigma Alpha Iota honorary music fraternity, and
Delta Zeta soroity.
On April 2, 1961 she married Jim. C. Vulgamore at Rush Center. He
survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Craig, Wichita; a daughter, Kelly
Truman, Clearwater; mother, Mabel Price, Nekoma; four brother, Donald
Price, Fort Morgan, Colo., Bill Price, Rozel, Frank Price, Burdett, and
Kenneth Price, Arkansas City; and three grandchildren, Angela, Craig
and Joshua.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clovis Price, on Dec. 6, 1983.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oc. 30, 1999, at the Clearwater
First Christian Church, with Rev. Jerry Muncy officiating. Interment
was in Clearwater Cemetery.
Four memorials have been established in her name and memory; First
Christian Church Building Fund; Association for Retarded Citizens of
Sedgwick County; Hospice, Inc.; and Angel Truman Trust Fund.

Kathryn W. Walters
Kathryn W. Walters, 98, died Aug. 3, 1997, at Attica.
She was born April 2, 1899, at Medicine Lodge, the daughter of Francis and
Sarah Howard Romig. She was a nurses aide.
She was a member of Christian Church, Attica.
On June 18, 1919, she married Roscoe Walters, at Anthony. He died March
9, 1983.
Survivors include: two sons, Mervin, DeSoto, Texas, and Dale, Wichita; two
daughters, Marlene Dinkmeyer, Gladstone, Mo., and Phyllis Wilye, Manhattan;
nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at Attica Cemetery,
with the Rev. Paul Banister presiding.

Frederic Donald Wieland
Frederic Donald Wieland, 88, died Aug. 26, 1997, at Medicien Lodge
Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 22, 1909, at Wichita, the son of Frederic G. and
Retta Monroe Wieland. He attended Missouri Military Academy and graduated
from Wichita State University in 1934. A Medicine Lodge resident since
1947, moving from Alva, Okla.
He was a banker at Sharon Valley State Bank. He had worked for Allison-
Chalmers, was associated with a Pontiac-GMC dealership, was office manager
at Medicine Lodge Sale Co. and sold Moorman Cattle Feed.
He belonged to the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, where he
held several offices. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Medicine Lodge,
Midian Shrine Temple and Scottish Rite, Wichiat Consistory, Barber County
Shrine Club and was a DeMolay Advisor and Rainbow Dad.
On Nov. 28, 1937, he married Fern Mildred Worden at Wichita. She died in
1974.
Survivors include: a companion, Norma Jean Fincher, Medicine Lodge; three
sons, John F., Broken Arrow, Okla., Curtis M., Buffalo, Okla., and Kent W.,
Rockford, Ill.; a sister, Freda Biddle, Ketchum, Idaho; two grandsons; and
a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at the church, with
the Rev. Jim Godbey presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine
Lodge.

Grace E. Wolgamott
Grace E. Wolgamott, 87, died Aug. 30. 1997, at her rural home.
She was born Jan. 30, 1910, in Woods County, Okla., the daughter of
David D. and Pearl Smith Arndt. A lifetime area resident, she was a
homemaker.
She was a member of Hardtner United Methodist Church, and the
Rebekah Lodge of Hardtner, and was a charter member of the Happy Hour
Home Demonstration Unit in Woods County, Okla.
On Dec. 11, 1935, she married Claude Wolgamott in Woods County. He
died Nov. 11, 1991.
Survivors include: a son, David, of Hardtner; two daughters, Cleta
Ann McMurphy, Alva, Okla., and Pearl Myers, Kansas City, Kan.; two
brothers, Arthur and Maynard Arndt, both of Alva; three sisters, Edna
McOsker, San Antonio, Hazel Farney, and Thelma Tavis, both Mesa, Ariz.;
eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at the church, with
the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding. Burial was in the Hardtner Cemetery.

Eugene Crites
Eugene Crites, 69, died Sept. 30, 1997, at his home in Sharon.
He was born May 7, 1928, at Rover, Ark., the son of Benjamin
H. and Myrtle Short Crites. A resident of Sharon since 1959,
moving from Medicine Lodge, he was a machine operator at the
Kiowa Co-op.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
On April 26, 1955, he married Peggy J. Rutan at Medicine Lodge.
She survives and two grandchildren, Luke and Natasha of the family
home.
Other survivors include: seven sons, Bill, Colorado, Jerry, Russell,
Larry, Dardanelle, Ark., Terry and Lonnie, both of Sharon, and Rick
and Toby, both of Medicine Lodge; a daughter, Gina Barkley, Argonia;
two brothers, C.L. "Pete", Russellville, Ark., and Joe, Dardanelle;

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at Assembly of
God Church in Medicine Lodge, with Pastor Arthur A. Sorg presiding.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Mildred M. "Millie" Belden Colle
Mildred M. "Millie" Belden Colle, 74, of Hutchinson, died Oct 4,
1997, at Hutchinson Hospital.
She was born May 28, 1923, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Joseph
Earl and Blanche Calhoun Miller. A Hutchinson resident since 1991,
formerly of rural Nickerson and Sylvia, she was a retired registered
nurse, having worked at Hutchinson Hospital, Stafford Districh
Hospital and the former St. Elizabeth Hospital, Hutchinson.
She belonged to Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson, and was a
former member of the Extension Homemakers Unit, Sylvia.
On March 9, 1946, she married William E. "Bill" Belden. He died
March 8, 1969. On June 1, 1985, she married Gene Colle. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Greg Belden, Liberal, and Gary
Meggers, Sylvia; two daugherters, Darlene Meggers, Sylvia and Robin
Belden, Liberal; two stepsons, Dennis Colle, Medicine Lodge, and
Tony Colle, Nicherson; two stepdaughters, Camille Colle, Medicine
Lodge, and Jane Colle Nickerson; four brothers, Don and Ronnie Miller,
Hutchinson, Walter E. "Bud" and Jerry Miller, Sylvia; three sisters,
Wanda Hofen and Pat Parker, both of Hutchinson, and Betty Coons, Newton;
five grandhcildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at Elliott Chapel,
Hutchinson, with David Tappe and Richard Foster presiding. Burial was
in Peace Creek Cemetery, rural Stafford.

John Mark Henderson
John Mark Henderson, 42, died Sept. 21, 1997, at his home.
He was born Sept. 14, 1955, at Sedan, the son of John M. and
Joyce Thompson Henderson. He was a 1973 graduate of Hutchinson
High School, a 1978 graduated of Hutchinson Junior College and
attended Brite Divinity, Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from
Texas Christian University in 1981. From 1972 to 1984, he was
employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone, Co., and was Hutchinson's
first male telephone operator. He was the administrator at Twin
Oaks Boys Home in Hutchinson from 1988 to 1994. A Sharon resident
for the past three years, moving from Hutchinson, he was pastor
of the Community Church of Sharon and was a paraprofessional at
Medicine Lodge High School.
He belonged to the Community Church of Sharon.
On Dec. 28, 1979, he married Alice Carole Van Zandt at Dallas.
She survives.
Other survivors include: his parents, of Hutchinson; two sons,
Scott A. and Timothy Joel, both of Sharon; a brother, David,
Hutchinson; two sisters, Pamela Saffle, Wichita, and Lisa Vieyra,
Hutchinson; and grandfather, Loel E. Thompson, Dexter.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, at First
Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Tom Walters
presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Lela E. Hutchison
Lela E. Hutchison, 84, died Sept. 24, 1997, at Columbia Wesley
Medical Center, Wichita.
She was born Feb. 3, 1913, in Woods County, Okla., the daughter
of Willard and Berniece Gurnsey Littell. a former resident of Kiowa
and Medicine Lodge, she had lived in Haysville for six years and
was a homemaker.
She belonged to the United Methodist Church, was a charter member
of the Busy B Club and a member of the Extension Homemakers Unit
and the Leisure Time Center, all at Medicine Lodge.
On Feb. 4, 1931, she married Paul E. Hutchison at Alva, Okla. He
died June 10, 1974.
Survivors include: four daughters, Billie Hutchinson, Lola French,
Cathy Carter and Judy Angle, all of Wichita; a brother, Eldon Littell,
Los Angeles; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-
great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, in Riverview
Cemetery, Kiowa, with Robert Kinney presiding.

Peter 'Pete' Schlegel
Peter 'Pete' Schlegel, 87, died Sept. 25, 1997, at Friendship
Manor, Kiowa.
He was born Dec. 7, 1909, at Otis, the son of John P. and Lydia
Moore Schlegel. A lifelong Kiowa resident, he was a carpenter and
farm laborer.
He belonged to the United Methodist Church, Kiowa.
On Nov. 7, 1931, he married Bertha A. Hoffman at Fort Morgan,
Colo. She died June 13, 1997.
Survivors include: two brothers, Sam Otis, and Leslie, Colorado
Springs, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Richard Stricker, Andover,
Michel Pete Stricker, Wilmer, Texas, Robert Scott Stricker and
Lori Ann Jones, both of Wichita.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at the church,
with the Rev. Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.

Dean Schmidt
Dean Schmidt, 77, died Oct. 8, 1997, at Medicine Lodge.
He was born Dec. 2, 1930, at Anthony, the son of Edward and Beulah
Churchill Schmidt. He was a farmer.
On Sept. 2, 1951, he married Peggy Meador at Anthony. She survives
at the home.
Other survivors include: two sons, Don, San Antonio, and Carl,
Cleburne, Texas; a daughter, Dottie Waldron, Freeport; and 10 grand-
children.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at the United
Methodist Church, Anthony. Burial was in Freeport Cemetery.

Dearld Duane Brooks
Dearld Duane Brooks, 36, died Oct. 7, 1997, of injuries sustained in
an auto accident, west of Greensburg.
He was born Sept. 23, 1961, at Greensburg, the son of Larry Dean and
Mary Jane Randel Brooks. He attended school in Mullinville and had lived
in Oklahoma, Illinois and Greensburg. He had farmed and worked in Oil-
fields and had recently become co-owner with his brother in a siding
business, Contemporary Home Improvements at Pratt.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts, and the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes.
On Aug. 1, 1979, he married Cassie Neelly.
Survivors include: twin sons, Aaron and Ryan, Greensburg; his mother,
Jane Randel, Ford; father, Larry Brooks, Hutchinson; stepfather, Richard
Diesselhorst, Illinois; a brother, Gerald, Pratt; a sister, Deana Moore,
Dodge City; and maternal grandfather, Alva Randel, Greensburg.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 10, 1997, at the First Christian
Church, Greensburg, with Father Jerry Stein presiding. Burial was in
Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg.

Byron Fitzgerald Bliss
Byron Fitzgerald Bliss, 84, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, in
Wichita.
A former Kiowa and Medicine Lodge resident, he was a retired
stockman/farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Bonnie Beth
Slack of Wichita, and Byra Lynn Ramsey, of Starkville, Miss.;
and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997, 10:30 am
at Hillside Funeral Home West, 2929 W. 13th., Wichita.

Nathan Daniel Aaron Buddington
Nathan Daniel Aaron Buddington, son of Wallace and Felicia (Wilson)
Buddington, was stillborn on Sept. 24, 1997, in Southwest Medical
Center.
He is survived by his parents of LIberal; grandparents Richard and
Sheral Wortman of Liberal, Danny and Tana Wilson of LaPorte, Texas,
and Ron and Joan Mace of West Virginia; great-grandparents Richard
and June Wortman of Medicine Lodge, and Gladys Wilson of LIberty,
Texas; and great-great-grandmother Thelma Wortman of Medicine Lodge.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at the Kitch
Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith Bryant officiating.
Lewis W. "Doc" Doolittle
Lewis W. "Doc" Doolittle, 89, died Nov. 9, 1997, at Wm. Newton
Memorial Hospital, Winfield.
He was born April 6, 1908, on a farm near Harper, the son of
George Frederick and Anna Allender Doolittle. He was reared and
received his education in the Zenda area and began farming in
that are as a youth.
He was well known locally as a water well driller, and he had
been employed in Cowley County oilfields for many years. He lived
and worked at Zenda, Corbin, Chrisfield, and Medicine Lodge before
moving to a farm near Udall. He lived on this farm for nearly 50
years, moving to Winfield in 1993 following retirement.
On Sept. 8, 1928, he married Aletha Dorles Hoyt at Attica. She
survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Paul Doolittle and wife, Zoe,
Winfield; two daughters, Stella Thompson and husband Roy, Udall, and
Wilmeta Ruiz and husband Ruben, Winfield; a daughter-in-law Lola
Doolittle, Wichita; two brothers, Truman Doolittle, Winfield, and
John Doolittle, Norwich; a sister, Veda Kilmer, Belle Plaine; 14
grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at Miles
Funeral Service, Winfield. Interment was in the Wilmot, Kan. cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his name for Home Health Care of
Wm. Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield. Contributions may be mad through

Merle Fluke
Merle Fluke, 84, died Oct. 2, 1997, at Stafford District Hospital,
Stafford.
He was born June 20, 1913, at Lerado, the son of Alfred J. and
Nona Lawson Fluke, he was a lifetime resident of Turon. He was a
retired farmer and custom cutter.
He was a member of Turon Community Church and Turon Senior Citizens.
On Jan. 5, 1937, he married Ruby Fern Branscom in Hutchinson. She
preceded him in death Nov. 7, 1988.
Survivors include: three sons, Merlin, Medicine Lodge, Bob, Ottawa,
and Kenny, Olathe; a brother, Roy, Turon; three sisters, Marie Reavis,
Phoenix, Ariz., Ruth Ramsey, Kingman, and Erma Swingle, Zenda; eight
grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at the Turon
Community Church, Turon, with Rev. Ron Dykes presiding Burial was in
Lerado Cemetery, Lerado.

Flora J. Ohlson Haskard
Flora J. Ohlson Haskard, 82, died Oct. 6, 1997, at Wesley Towers,
Hutchinson.
She was born Nov. 4, 1914, at Gypsum, the daughter of Elmer and
Alma Achenbach Ohlson. A former Hardtner resident, she has lived in
Hutchinson for 43 years. She was a homemaker.
She belonged to Grace Episcopal Church.
Survivors include: two daughters, Vicki Rogg, Lawrence, and Pam
Hornbeck, Hutchinson; a sister, Lois Ohlson Platt, Hardtner; and
four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at United
Methodist Church, Hardtner, with the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding.
Burial was in Hardtner Cemetery.

Dessie Stalnaker
Dessie Stalnaker, 90, died Sept. 15, 1997, at South Central Kansas
Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
She was born on a farm south of Geuda Springs to A.O. and Iva
(McCormick) Stalnaker. She was raised in the Gueda Springs and Arkansas
City areas, attended Crescent Country School and graduated from Arkansas
City High School in 1926. In 1930 she graduated from Southwestern College.
She taught in various small communities in Kansas for several years,
then at Medicine Lodge for the last 25 years of her career. She retired
in 1969 after 38 years of teaching.
She was a member of the Medicine Lodge United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women, and the Arkansas City Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include one brother, Raymond Stalnaker of Newkirk, Okla.; a
sister-in-law, Gladys Stalnaker, Arkansas City, and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 19, 1997 at the Rindt-Erdman
Funeral Home Chapel in Arkansas City. Burial was in the Hope Cemetery.

Donna M. Savina, 45, died Novc. 2, 1997, at Wichita.
She was bonr Nov. 8, 1951, at Nashville, Kan., the daughter of
Leonard and Mary Helen Panek. She was a plumbing inspector fo the
city of Wichita.
Survivors include: her husband, Rivard Savina, of the home; a
daughter, Nichole, of the home; parents, Kingman; three brothers,
Michael Lubbers, Lenexa, Larry Lubbers, Cimarron, and Tim Lubbers,
Andale; and two sisters, Shirley Bayer, Kingman, and Mary Jane
Duncan, Wichita.

Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Wichita, with Father James
Billinger presiding. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.

Karyl Lee Casper
Karyl Lee Casper, 51, died Oct. 11, 1997, at her Rogers home after a
brief illness.
She was born March 31, 1946, at Pratt, the daughter of Clyde J. Phelps
and the late Gladys Gould Phelps. She attended Pratt schools, graduating
from Pratt High School in 1964. She had been a Wal-Mart associate for 20
years.
In 1964, she married Steven S. Casper. He survives.
Other survivors include: father, Pratt, two daughters, Kim, of the
home, and Michelle, Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, Clyde J. Phelps Jr., Denver;
three sisters, Deltha "DeDe" Payne, Rogers, LaDonna Chase, Pratt, and
Selena Chalker, Medicine Lodge; two uncles; and an aunt, Ruth Gowens,
Hutchinson.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Backstrom-
Pyeatte Funeral Home, Springdale, Ark. Cremation is planned.

Church, Pratt.
