Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, at 10:30 a.m. Interment in
Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Shelley Anne Gehlen, 18, died Sept. 27, 1997, at Dodge
City.
She was born August 1, 1979, at Kiowa, the daughter of
Arnold C. and Sharon Maddox Gehlen, they survive. A life-long
Sharon resident, she was an assistant manager at Pizza Hut,
Dodge City.
She was a member of the National Honor Society.
Survivors include: three sisters, Angela Miller and Amy
Gehlen, both of Kalispell, Mont., and Sherry Gehlen, Sharon;
and grandmother, Dorothy Peel, Clearwater.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at
First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Tom
Walters presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine
Lodge.

Robert L. 'Bob' Howell
Robert L. "Bob" Howell, 67, died Oct. 28, 1997, at John McClellan
Memorial Hospital, Little Rock, Ark.
He was born April 28, 1930, in Harper County, the son of Theodore
E. and Lida Luella Burke Howell. A Jasper resident, formerly of Harper,
Corpus Christi, Texas, and San Diego, he was a retires U.S. Naval
Master Chief Petty Officer, serving for 26 years.
He belonged to Harper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 11449.
In December 1953, he married Naomi Davis. In July, 1972 he married
Peggy McFarlin. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Raymond, and Duane, both of
Escondido, Calif.; a daughter, Elaine Stauffer, Jasper; a step-daughter,
Vickie McFarlin, Jasper; four brothers, Ted, Rogers, Ark., Lee, Tucson
Ariz., Bill, Choctaw, Okla., and Ray, Attica; seven sisters, Helen Harkrader,
Tucson, Frances Scott and Virgie Cushenbery, both of Kingman, Mae Newberry,
Chandler, Ariz., Joann War, Ponca City, Okla., Donna Smithhisler, Harper,
and Jean Kimball, Medicine Lodge; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, at Elliott Funeral
Home, Harper, with th eRev. Bob Winslow presiding. Burial was in Harper
Cemetery with military graveside rites.

William C. 'Bill' Halsey
William C. 'Bill' Halsey, 74, died April 29, 1997, at Alva,
Okla.
He was born Oct. 10, 1922, at Shook, the son of Andrew Clyde and
Jessie Caroline Williams Halsey. An Anthony resident, he was a retired
routeman for Rainbow Bread Co.
He was a member of Christian Church, American Legion, Odd Fellows
Lodge and Quails Unlimited, all of Anthony, and American Bowling
Congress.
On Oct. 25, 1941, he married Anna L. Lukens at Medicine Lodge. She
died Aug. 30, 1995.
Survivors include: a son, William Michael, Wichita; a daughter,
DiAnna Waldschmidt, Alva, Okla.; two brothers, Jack, Kingman, Ariz.,
and Wayne, Wichita; a sister, Irene Dilts, Littleton, Colo.; and
four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 1, 1997, at Elliott
Mortuary, Anthony, with the Rev. John Schnelle presiding. Burial was
in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Anthony.

Esther A. Larson
Esther A. Larson, 92, died Oct. 26, 1997, at Attica Nursing
Home.
She was born Dec. 29, 1904, at Concordia, the daughter of David
and Annie Barleen Thomas. She attended Cloud County Schools and
graduated from Concordia High School. Later, she attended Concordia
Business College and then taught for several years at Sibley rural
School northwest of Concordia. She worked on her husband's farm
and operated The Knit Shop, in Concordia, with Gladys Travis.
She belonged to the Baptist Church, Concordia, teaching Sunday
school and serving on various church committees, was a member of
the Cloud County Farm Bureau Board, the extension board and the
4-H Club, all at Concordia.
On Oct. 9, 1928, she married Wilbur F. Larson at Concordia. He
died Jan. 19, 1997.
Survivors include: s son, Bob, Medicine Lodge; three daughters,
Emalyn Wartman, Johnson, Joyce Hansen, Colby, and Janet Henning,
Berryton; 1- grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at Pleasant
Hill Cemetery, Concordia, with the Rev. John Wilkens presiding.
Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Beulah M. Page
Beulah M. Page, 72, died Nov. 5, 1997, at Kiowa District Hospital
in Kiowa.
She ws born Jan. 23, 1925, at Waggoner, Okla., the daughter of
William A. and Dora M. Dunovan Harding. A resident of the Kiowa
area since 1950, she was a Kirby vacuum dealer, a homemaker and
farmer.
She married Nobel Green. On Oct. 25, 1960, she married Richard
Liggenstoffer at Medicine Lodge. He died Dec. 18, 1985. On Aug. 15,
1987, she married John Page at Kiowa. He died July 26, 1992.
Survivors include: a son, Gary Green, Kiowa; two brothers, Jack
Harding, Redding, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, at Congregational
Church of Christ, Kiowa, with the Rev. Virgie Davis presiding. Burial
was in Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa.

Valeta 'Skeet' Parker
Valeta 'Skeet' Parker, 87, died Nov. 17, 1997, at Kiowa.
She was born Dec. 20, 1909, in Alfalfa County, Okla., the
daughter of Alpha and Myrtle Mott Mitchell. A lifetime area
resident, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the
Order of Eastern Star, both at Kiowa.
On Sept. 26, 1929, she married M.A. 'Windy' Parker at
Medicine Lodge. He died Nov. 17, 1986.
Survivors include: a sister, Ruby Circle, Kiowa; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at the
United Methodist Church, Kiowa, with the Rev. Bill Dyar presiding.
Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa.

Kenneth Milton Weaver
Kenneth Milton Weaver, 68, died Nov. 14, 1997, at Cedar Crest
Manor.
He was born Sept. 27, 1929, at Flint, Mich., the son of Lloyd
S. and Lucy Sargent Weaver. A Medicine Lodge resident for nearly
40 years, he was a truck driver.
He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of the Korean War.
On Nov. 17, 1977, he married Doris D. Gideon at Great Bend. He
survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Randy Weaver, Medicine Lodge;
four stepsons, Mark Ukens, LaCrosse, Kenneth Ragan, Ellinwood,
Kelly Small, Centerville, Iowa, and Lloyd Wood, Great Bend; two
step-daughters, DeEtta Komarek, Great Bend, and Lorinda Hoffman,
Wamego; three half-sisters; and 20 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home Chapel, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Russell
Stolp presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.
Edra Lucille Cheshire
Edra Lucille Cheshire, 81, died Nov. 16, 1997, at Via Christi
Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Jan. 1, 1916, at Coats, the daughter of Edward Z.
and Winnie M. Cooke Larkin. A lifetime Medicine Lodge resident,
she was a nurse.
She belonged to the United Methodist Church, the Community
Club and the Order of Eastern Star, all of Medicine Lodge. She
had received her 50 year pin from Eastern Star.
On Dec. 17, 1938, she married Griffin D. Cheshire at Medicine
Lodge. He died June 16, 1955.
Survivors include: two sons, Ed, Bushton, and Bill, Kansas City,
Mo.; a sister, Kittie Robbins, Medicine Lodge; eight grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home Chapel, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Jim
Godbey presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Virginia Anne Chance
Virginia Anne Chance, 64, died January 3, 1998, at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 28, 1933, at Montezuma, the daughter of Benjamin
and Edith Woodward Mullikan. A lifetime Medicine Lodge resident, she
was a retired Barber County deputy register of deeds.
She belonged to Medicine Lodge Presbyterian Church and the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Medicine Lodge.
On September 4, 1948, she married E.P. Bill Change at Medicine Lodge.
He died January 4, 1991.
Survivors include: two sons, Tim and Jerry, both of Medicine Lodge; a
daughter, Lurinda Gehlen; a brother, Ben Mulikin, Corpus Christi, Texas;
a sister, Phyllis Inslee, Ada, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 6, 1998, at Larrison-Forsyth
Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Tom Walters presiding. Burial
was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Bess Irene Frei
Bess Irene Frei, 98, died Dec. 5, 1997, at Kiowa District Hospital.
She was born Aug. 5, 1999, at Springfield, Mo., the daughter of
T.A. "Artie" and Melinda Sharp Blair. A lifelong Hardtner resident,
she was a homemaker and farmer.
She belonged to United Methodist Church, Hardtner, and the Hardtner
Legion Auxiliary.
On March 4, 1953, she married Bob Frei at Oklahoma City. He died
July 1, 1963.
Survivors include: a daughter, Norma Jean Pshigoda, Hardtner; and
seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tueday, Dec. 9, 1997, at Hardtner United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding. Burial
was at Hardtner Cemetery.

David Delray Fain
David Delray Fain, 38, died January 1, 1998, in Enid, Oklahoma.
He was born June 26, 1959, at Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of
Dale M. and Janice Fain. He attended school at Chisholm and North
Enid and graduated in 1977. He received his Bachelor of Science
Degree from SWOSU in 1981, and graduated from Dental School at the
University of Oklahoma in 1985. He had his dental practice in Kiowa.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was also a
Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed collecting, tennis, snow skiing,
church activites, studying the Bible and spending time with his
family.
On June 4, 1988, he married Nancy Bentley. She survives in Enid,
Oklahoma.
Other survivors include: a son, Doug, Enid; two daughters, Dalayna
and Dedee, both of Enid; parents, Dale and Janice Fain, Enid, Oklahoma;
and a sister, Julie Fain, New York.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 5, 1998, at the First
Baptist Church, Enid, Oklahoma, with Dr. Richard Dunn and Rev. Tom
Clifton presiding. Burial was held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid.

Catherine Marie Fischer
Catherine Marie Fischer, 91, died Oct. 19, 1997, at Friendship
Manor.
She was born April 22, 1906, at Howells, Neb., the daughter of
Jospeh and Anna Aschauer Schnittker. A longtime Pratt resident, she
was a retired laundress at Pratt Hospital.
She belonged to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pratt, and the Alter
Society.
On Jan. 27, 1927, she married Albert William Fischer at St. Leo.
He died Dec. 22, 1957.
Survivors include: a son, Larry Fischer, Coffeyville; seven
daughters, Vanita McGoffin, Lafayette, La., Geraldine Spicer and
Carol Malashchuk, both of Wichita, Georgetta Paskoff, Cary, N.C.,
Eula McKedy, Colorado Springs, Colo., Lyola Hatfield, Pratt, and
Charlene Rinke, Medicine Lodge; two sisters, Josephine Arnold,
Denver, Colo., and Dorothy Wamsley, Liberty, Mo.; 24 grandchildren;
and 43 great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass was held Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, Pratt, with Father Jim Dieker presiding. Burial was
in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Madolin O'Brien Gordon
Madolin O'Brien Gordon, 92, died Nov. 9, 1997, at Friendship Manor,
Kiowa.
She was born Nov. 26, 1904, at Kiowa, the daughter of Ernest N.
and Margaret Jane Anthony O'Brien. A lifetime Hardtner resident, she
was a nurses aide, hairdresser, seamstress and homemaker.
She belonged to United Methodist Church, Hardtner.
On June 15, 1924, she married George R. Gordon at Alva, Okla. He
died Jan. 31, 1985.
Survivors include: a son, Alan, Ft. Dodge; a daughter, Gail Clovis,
Hardtner; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Graveside service was held Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at Hardtner
Cemetery, Hardtner, with the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding.
Darren L. Garner
Darren L. Garner, 35, died Dec. 4, 1997, at University Hospital,
Oklahoma City.
He was born April 26, 1962, at Kiowa, the son of Cecil Dwane and
Shirley L. Pollock Garner. He graduated from Kiowa High School. A
longtime Kiowa resident, living in Enid, Okla., for the last five
years, he was a heavy-equipment operator.
He belonged to First United Methodist Church, Kiowa, and had been
an Eagle Scout.
On Oct. 8, 1988, he married Brenda Greer at Alva, Okla. She survives.
Other survivors include: three daughters, BreAnna, Harlowton, Mont.,
Brittany and Sierra, both of Enid; three sisters, Cherly Zappia, Avon,
Colo., Leta J. Phillips, Kiowa, and Deidre Graves, Medicine Lodge,
mother, Kiowa; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at First United
Methodist Church, Kiowa, with the Rev.Bill Dyar presiding. Burial was
in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton.

Jack D. Groves
Jack D. Groves, 76, died January 6, 1998, Wichita.
He was born January 31, 1921, in Depew, Oklahoma, the son of William
and Bessie Landre Martin Groves. He was a former resident of Medicine
Lodge and Anthony. He was a retired Sedgwick County Security Officer.
On July 16, 1943, he married Mary Ann Protheroe. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Eric R., Wichita; two daughters,
Sheila Diann Kendall, Renton, Washington, and Elaine Jones, Wichita;
two brothers, Gerald Groves, Huntington Beach, California, and James
Groves; a sister, Donna Boettcher, Wichita; three grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 9, 1998, at Resthaven
Mortuary Chapel, Wichita.
John A. Hunt
John A. Hunt, 80, died Nov. 20, 1997, at Attica.
He was born June 13, 1917, at Medicine Lodge, the son of
John Washington and Clara Bell Wingfield Hunt. He was retired
from Central Subbly Aerojet, California.
He belonged to University United Methodist Church, Topeka.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Sept. 29, 1941, he married Regina M. McDaniels at Pratt.
She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, John Aaron Jr., Antioch,
Calif., and Roderick Lynn, Shingle Springs, Calif.; two daughters,
Cecile Jean Smalley, Attica, and Deanna K. Wright, Topeka; a
brother, Lawrence E., Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.

Ruth O. Hunter
Ruth O. Hunter, 89, died Nov. 25, 1997, at Friendship Manor,
Kiowa.
She was born Oc. 16, 1908, at Perth, the daughter of Bert Milton
and Mary Ellen Hart Whaley. A lifetime Hazelton area resident, she
was a homemaker and seamstress.
She was active at Community Baptist Church, Hazelton.
On Sept. 15, 1932, she married Hugh Richard Hunter at Anthony. He
died Jan. 30, 1985.
Survivors include: two sons, Richard, Medford, Okla., and Clifford,
Attica; a daughter, Ellen Ruiz, Hazelton; a sister, Lois Miller, St.
Louis; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Community Baptist Church,
Hazelton, with the Rev. Bradley Daniels presiding. Burial was in
Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton.

Philip W. Harding
Philip W. Harding, 87, died Nov. 30, 1997, at Augusta Medical Complex
L.T.
He was born Jan. 27, 1910, at Medicine Lodge, the son of Charles
Franklin and Rilla Elizabeth Highfill Harding. A longtime Augusta
resident, he was an inspector and engineer for the city of Augusta.
He belonged to First Church of God, Augusta.
On Sept. 17, 1930, he married Mary Lavina Gillette at Pratt. She
died in 1971.
Survivors include: three sons, Forest, Arkansas City, Gerry, Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., and Clint, Augusta; a daughter, Kathy Howerton,
Augusta; a brother, Guil, Coats; a sister, Marjorie Eubanks, Sawyer;
and 18 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Dunsford
Chapel, Augusta, with the Rev. Bill Jeffress presiding. Burial was in
Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Robert Lynn 'Bob' Nelson
Robert Lynn 'Bob' Nelson St., 44, a Clinton businessman, died Sept.
15, 1997, at Presbyterian Hospital, Oklahoma City.
He was born Oct. 13, 1952, at Medicine Lodge, the son of Lonnie L.
and Alice Ruth Devore Nelson. He graduated from Medicine Lodge High
School in 1970. He ran an iron yard and worked for the Medicine Lodge
Police Department before moving to Clinton in 1980. He owned and
operated a used car lot and had operated Nelson's Iron Yard since
1990.
Survivors include: parents, Clinton; two sons, Robert Nelson, Jr.,
Clinton, and Matthew A. Nelson, Arapaho, Oklahoma; a daughter, Kelly
Jo Metheny, Clinton; a sister, Linda Nelson, Burrton; and a granddaughter, Allison Paige Nelson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Nelson.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 29, 1997, at the First
Church of God, Clinton, with the Rev. Roy Dobbs presiding. Burial
was in the Clinton Cemetery.

Delmar R. Schrock, 87, died December 3, 1997, at the Apostolic Christian
Home, Sabetha.
He was born November 29, 1910, at Hazelton, the son of Benjamin and Minnie
Bauman Schrock. A farmer and stockman, he had moved to Sabetha in 1986.
On February 14, 1939, he married Emmaline Struder at Hiawatha. She died
September 30, 1974.
Survivors include: a son, Mark Schrock, Manhattan; two daughters, Scharmal
Schrock, Hammond, Louisiana, and Sheryl Schorck, Thun, Switzerland; and two
grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Monday, December 8, 1997, in Riverview cemetery,
Kiowa, with Jeff Bahr presiding.

Charles H. Scott
Charles H. Scott, 73, died December 10, 1997, at Kiowa District Hospital.
He was born August 5, 1924, at Hardtner, the son of Sam and Matilda S.
McMinn Scott. A lifetime Hardtner resident, he was the caretaker for Hardtner
Cemetery and was a city employee.
He belonged to First Christian Church, Kiowa, and the American Legion,
Hardtner. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran.
On August 5, 1971, he married Ada Belle Winn at Kiowa. She died September
13, 1993.
Survivors include: a stepson, George Beck, Kiowa; a step-daughter, Cynthia
Hancock, Hobart, Oklahoma; three sisters, Iris Snead, Dixie Grant and Ann
Eshleman, all of Hardtner; and five step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 13, 1997, at United Methodist
Church, Hardtner, with the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding. Burial was in
Hardtner Cemetery.

Albertha E. 'Jimmie' Adelhardt Spear, 74, died December 15, 1997, at St.
Joseph's Hospital, Atlanda, Georgia, after a short illness.
She was born March 10, 1923, at St. Leo, the daughter of George and Katie
Simon Adelhardt. A Marietta resident since 1977, formerly of Sharon, she
was a homemaker.
She belonged to Holy Family Catholic Church and was treasurer of Autism
in Atlanta.
On May 27, 1947, she married Charles F. Spear at St. Leo. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Robert, Clarksville, Georgia; a daughter,
Marjorie Truax, Marietta; a brother, Bill Adelhardt, Zenda; two sisters,
Cecelia Batt, Zenda, and Geraldine Rausch, Sharon; and five grandchildren.

Alma May Snyder
Alma May Snyder, 85, died December 27, 1997, at Kiowa District Hospital.
She was born August 29, 1912, at North Platte, Nebraska, the daughter of
Charles M. and Annie M. Olinger Ward. A longtime area resident, she was
a homemaker.
On September 19, 1932, she married Fred F. Snyder at Alva, Oklahoma.
He died March 15, 1973.

Fay Wheeler
Fay Wheeler, 88, died Nov. 19, 1997, at Parkwood Village.
She was born June 14, 1909, at Hugoton, the daughter of William
and Blanche Cook Kinser. A former Haviland resident, she was a
retired minister, pastoring at Belvidere Community Church, Modoc
Friends Church near Miami, Okla., Friends Chapel near Coyle, Okla.,
and Spring Grove Friends Church at Osawatomie.
She belonged to Haviland Friends Church.
On Sept. 26, 1928, she married Leslie Andrew Wheeler at Dodge
City. He died Nov. 7, 1986.
Survivors include: a son, Lyle, Pratt; seven brothers, Elrie
Kinser, Haviland, Rovert Kinser, Hutchinson, Arlie Kinser, Keyes,
Okla., Leslie Kinser, Hugoton, Floyde Kinser, Waterford, Calif.,
Loyde Kinser, Center, Colo., and Trulin Kinser, Medicine Lodge;
four sisters, Stella Barton, Guymon, Okla., Hope Harris, Hugoton,
Loene Barry, Durango, Colo., and Fern Elam, Kenai, Alaska; four
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at Haviland
Friends Church, with Pastors Everett Jantz, Merle Kinser and
Chaplain John Havens presiding. Burial was in Haviland Cemetery.

Melba N. Wilkerson
Melba N. Wilkerson, 72, formerly of Liberal, died December 8, 1997, at
Cedar Crest Manor, Medicine Lodge.
She was born February 27, 1925, at Beggs, Oklahoma, the daughter of
Arthur and Nora B. Phaup Cox. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include: a brother, Charles Butler, Sanford, Florida; and
three sisters, Doris Goodhart, Farmington, Arkansas, Betty Shoemaker,
Big Bow, and Earnestine Butler, Aledo, Texas.
Graveside services were held Friday, December 12, 1997, in Liberal
Cemetery, Liberal, with Charles Brisendine presiding.
Miller Mortuary, Liberal, was in charge of arrangements.
Dollie Ash
Dollie Ash, 92, of Canon City, Colorado, did January 30, 1998. She was
born February 1, 1905, in Frontenac, Kansas, to M.A. and Ida (Harvey)
Fillman.
Mrs. Ash was a homemaker and affiliated with the Christian Family
Fellowship Church.
She had lived in Lamar during her school years. After her marriage, she
and her husband moved to Kansas until 1951 when they moved back to Colorado.
She had lived in Canon City since 1968.
Dollie and her husband had a great friendship with the Navajo Indians and
were very involved in helping them. Mrs. Ash also helped in Reach for
Recovery, Meals on Wheels and assisting shut-ins.
In December, 1923, in Lamar, she married Elmer Ash, who preceded her in
death January 31, 1975.
Mrs. Ash is survived by a daughter, Ruth Miller of Canon City; and two
grandsons: Kelly Miller of California and R.C. Miller of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and two sisters.
Memorial service was held Tuesday, February 3, 1998, at Holt Family Chapel
of the Garden with Pastor Roy Knowles officiating. Private famly interment at
Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the

Gladys A. Alexander Adams
Gladys A. Alexander Adams, 95, died Nov. 5, 1997, at Winfield.
She was born Sept. 7, 1902, in Woods County, Oklahoma Territory,
the daughter of Howard Fred and Mary E. Nichelson Utt. A former
resident of Hazelton and Kiowa, she was a teacher and homemaker.
On March 31, 1930, she married Carl Alexander. He died June 17,
1964. In March, 1970, she married Ralph Adams. He died June, 1990.
Survivors include: a son, Dean Alexander, Hazelton; two daughters,
Shirley Hart, Sunnyvale, Calif., and LaDonna Long, Haysville; a
sister, Lois Elson, Wichita; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997, at Community
Baptist Church, Hazelton, with the Rev. Bradley Daniels presiding.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton.

Nettie Mildred Bell
Nettie Mildred Bell, 97, died Nov. 2, 1997, at the Odd Fellows
Rebekah Home, Mattoon, Ill.
She was born Nov. 1, 1900, at Simmons Point, Overbrook, the
daughter of Harmon Vedder and Mary Louise Simmons Thompson. A former
Isabel resident, she was a homemaker. She was a substitute teacher
in Isabel School and taught piano lessons in her home.
She belonged to Isabel United Methodist Church, Isabel, Wesley
United Methodist Church, Harlingen, Texas, the American Legion
Auxiliary and the Lorraine Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, both
at Isabel, was a former Worthy Matron and state correspondent
secretary for the Order of Eastern Star, and belonged to the Kansas
State Author's Club.
On Oct. 10, 1925, she married Delano Ray Bell at Jetmore. He died
April 1984.
Survivors include: a son, Don, Pratt; two daughters, Ann Cloud,
Charleston, Ill., and Jane Ford, Topeka; nine grandchildren; and 19
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Wednesday Nov. 5, 1997, at Isabel United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Russell Fincham presiding. Burial
was in Isabel Cemetery.

Pratt.
Floyd Elmer Bowman
Floyd Elmer Bowman, 67, died January 29, 1998, at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus, Great Bend.
He was born October 6, 1930, at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, the son of Ervin
Elmer and Mattie Bell Mumford Bowman. A Great Bend resident since 1974,
moving from Hutchinson, he was an oil-field tester for Sun Testing, Great
Bend.
On June 4, 1971, he married Cora Hoyt at Wintergreen, California. She
survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, William Elmer and Ricky Lynn, both
of Pheonix; three daughters, Barbara Ann Burgess, Phoenix, Dorothy Gail
Irvin, Gilbert, Arizona, and Tammy Sue Wilkins, Rocky Comfort, Missouri;
four brothers, Willie Vaughn, Spivey, Larry, Stratford, Oklahoma, James
Russell, and Roy, Medicine Lodge; two sisters, Maudine Lackey, Cushing,
Oklahoma, and Jonny Sue Logan, Phoenix; and 10 grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Saturday, January 31, 1998, in Great Bend
Cemetery.

Ivan Roy Blake
Ivan Roy Blake, 63, died February 2, 1998, at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born March 22, 1934, at Coldwater, the son of Henry Charles
and Gladys Jarnigan Blake. A lifetime Sun City area resident, he was
a retired rancher.
He belonged to the American Quarter Horse Association and the Rodeo
Cowboy's Association. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
War.
On August 1, 1959, he married Viola Pettay at Wilmore. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Mike, Coldwater, and Tim, Deer
Park, Texas; a daughter, Evelyn Pierce, Sayre, Oklahoma; two brothers,
Bill, Coldwater, and Hank, McPherson; a sister, Nellie Mosher, Coldwater;
and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 4, 1998, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, with the Rev. Jeff Woods presiding. Burial
was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater.

Gale Eugene Blurton
Gale Eugene Blurton, 70, died March 4, 1998, at Medicine Lodge Memorial
Hospital.
He was born September 4, 1927, at Zenda, the son of Mark J. and Mable
C. Newberry Blurton. A resident of Medicine Lodge since 1950, moving from
Attica, he was a mechanic in the oil fields.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus,
both at Medicine Lodge.
On September 26, 1950, he married Leona M. Burenheide at Sharon. She
survives.
Survivors include: a son, Don G. Blurton, Hays; two daughters, Carol M.
Norris, Coats, and Diane K. Greenwood, Valley Center; a brother, Bob Blurton,
Attica; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Holy Rosary Catholic
Church, Medicine Lodge, with Father Anthony Suellentrop presiding. Burial
was in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.

Victor Kent Babcock
Victor Kent Babcock, 63, died May 10, 1998, at Kiowa.
He was born March 31, 1935, at Crisfield, the son of Kenneth and Doris
Whaley Babcock. He worked for the Harper County Road Department.
He belonged to Faith Baptist Church, Attica.
On July 23, 1955, he married Loretta Shumaker at Anthony. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Patricia Babcock, Justin, Tedas,
and Patsy McKeever, Attica; a sister, Kay Jones, Wichita; two granddaughters;
and a step-great-grandson.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Williams Funeral
Home, Anthony, with Pastor Bobby Franklin presiding. Burial was in Attica
Cemetery.

Esther Anne Crocker
Esther Anne Crocker, 89, died January 16, 1998, at Cedar Crest Manor,
Medicine Lodge.
She was born June 27, 1908, at Friesprings, Missouri, the daughter of
William and Elizabeth Bargfrede Winter. A Medicine Lodge resident for
the past 14 years, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, Medicine Lodge.
On December 24, 1942, she married Jess Crocker at Nashville, Kansas.
He died October 22, 1997.
Survivors include: a stepson, Robert Crocker, Medicine Lodge; a brother,
Alvin Winter, Douglass; and a sister, Hulda Lampe, Nashville.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 19, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran
Church, Medicine Lodge, with the Rev. Paul Beyer presiding. Burial was in
the Attica Cemetery.

Steven M. Carriker
Steven M. Carriker, 84, died February 1, 1998, at Medicine Lodge.
He was born August 5, 1913, at Deerhead, the son of Sidney M. and
Alice Faye Bales Carriker. A lifelong Barber County resident, he was
a gas station owner and used car dealer.
He belonged to Hardtner United Methodist Church.
On December 30, 1939, he married Deloris L. Hoagland at Medicine
Lodge. She died June 28, 1992.
Survivors include: two sisters, Pauline Morris and Florence Landwehr,
both of Wichita.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 5, 1998, at Hardtner
United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lew Van Der Wege presiding.
Burial was in Lake City Cemetery.

Alaine Chain Cargill
Aline Chain Gargill, 87, died February 15, 1998, at Friendship Manor
Nursing Home, Pratt.
She was born July 21, 1910, at Oakwood, Oklahoma, the daughter of
George F. and Bessie Henderson Chain. An Isabel resident for 55 years,
moving from Sharon, she was a retired school teacher. She had graduated
from Northwestern University, Alva, Oklahoma.
She belonged to First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge; and Garden
Club, the Extension Homemakers Unit, and was a 4-H leader, all in Isabel.
On July 3, 1938, she married Hillmon Cargill. He died in 1979.
Survivors include: a son, Colin H., Isabel; two daughters, Dovie A.
Martin, Isabel, and LaDene I. Blankenship, Wichita; a brother, Loren
"Bud" Chain, Grants Pass, Oregon; a sister, Iona Nodland, Medicine Lodge;
four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 18, 1998, at First Christian
Church, Medicine Lodge. Burial will be in Isabel Cemetery.
