Opal Abbott
Opal Leona (Ramsey) Abbott, 101, of Osawatomie, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Miami County Medical Center. She was born April 10, 1899, on her parents farm in Uniontown, Kan. Her grandfather, Austin Ramsey, was a veteran of the Union Army during the Civil War. She married James W. Abbott on June 11, 1919. She had lived in Osawatomie since 1988. During her lifetime, she had lived in Washington, Oregon, and Oklahoma. Her hobbies included being a seamstress, gardener, and Christian. She was a member of the Uniontown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; children, Julia "Jerry" G. Burt, and James R. Abbott; and one grandson. Survivors include son-in-law, V.L. Burt; and daughter-in-law, Judy Abbott, both of Osawatomie; three grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Missionary Baptist Church, Unionville. Burial will be in the Unionville City Cemetery.
Alzada Adams
Alzada Mae Adams, 73, Olathe, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at her home.
She was born Aug. 15, 1926, the daughter of John and Maude Cartwright. She attended Lincoln Elementary School and Olathe High School, and was a member of the Church of God in Christ.
During World War II, she met Joseph Adams; they were married Aug. 5, 1944. After the war she moved to New Jersey, where she spent the next 25 years of her life. For the First Baptist Church there, she was superintendent of the Sunday School, a member of the senior choir, chairman of the Building Committee, and an assistant to the pastor.
During the Civil Rights movement, she was a spokesperson for the Legal Defense Fund, Burlington County Branch of the NAACP; attended the historic march on Washington, D.C.; and was the first black woman to be PTA president at Central Elementary School, in the Pennsauken public school system. She also was a member and past president of the Delair Civic Association.
She moved back to Kansas in 1973 and became a member of the Second Baptist Church. In September 1983, she became a member of the New Light Bethel Baptist Church, Olathe, where she was a Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and an usher until an illness in 1998.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Adams, in 1967.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Adams Jr., Daytona Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Sandra Taylor and Jo Ann Semien, both of Olathe, and Stephanie Smith, Pennsauken, N.J.; three brothers, Earl Cartwright, Charles Cartwright and Clifford Cartwright; six sisters, Margaret Lattimore, Martha King, Ethel Clay, Jean Miller, Evelyn Bates and Barbara Cartwright; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the New Light Bethel Baptist Church, Olathe. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. today at the church.

Edith Adams
Edith Elizabeth Adams, 91, Olathe, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Center for Long-term Care in Olathe.
She was born Sept. 6, 1908, in Edgerton, the daughter of George and Adele (Jackson) Wheeler. She married William C. Adams in 1930; he preceded her in death in 1944. She lived in the area most of her life and was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Olathe.
Survivors include three sons, William C. Adams Jr., Ottawa, Dean Adams, Oklawana, Fla., and Jerry Adams; a daughter, Mary Homansky, West Springfield, Pa.; a sister, Nellie Baker, Topeka; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 am. Tuesday at the W.L. Frye and Son Mortuary, Olathe. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Olathe.

Marion Adams
Marion Adams, Las Vegas, Nev., formally of Olathe, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at University Medical Center Hospital in Las Vegas.
He is preceded in death by his father, Alfred A. Adams; his mother, Merntha Johnson Adams, Gardner; a brother, Alfred Adams, Olathe; and a sister, Carol Roberts of Gardner.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Adams of Las Vegas; a son, William Adams, Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Kimberly Madsen, Mishawaka, Ind., and Cindy Shuff, Kansas City, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion. He was a real estate broker and builder in and around Johnson County for 20 years.
Friends may call between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday at W.L. Frye and Son Mortuary and Crematory in Olathe. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the mortuary. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth.

Thomas Adkins
LEAVENWORTH - Thomas J. Adkins, 64, of Olathe, died April 4, 2001, in Leavenworth. He was a resident of Olathe for seven years.
He was born August 21, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa. He served in the United States Air Force. He was married to Francis Adkins, who preceeded him in death. He also was married to Patricia (Burke) Parnell. He was the son of the late Carren and Walter Holder and also the late Harold Adkins.
He is survived by four children, Tom Adkins, Julie Warren, David Adkins, and Michelle Adkins; a brother, Leonard Adkins; a sister, Mavis Kvidera; and seven grandchildren.
Burial services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Chapel, 143rd and Black Bob Road, Olathe.
Rita Adler
Rita Christine Adler, 50, of Olathe, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 200, at Lee's Summit Hospital, Lee's Summit, Mo.
She was born Dec. 26, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a Lee's Summit resident for 19 years before moving to Olathe. She worked at Unity School of Christianity for 21 years and served as a copy writer at her time of death. Her hobbies included singing, dancing and writing.
She is survived by her husband, Terry Adler of the home; one son, Kevin Bryan Elam, Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Katie Elam, Lee's Summit, Mo.; one stepson, Marc Adler, Gardner; one stepdaughter, Hollie Penninger, Olathe; three sisters, Madonna Petro, Alta Loma, Calif.; Gladys Phelps, Upland, Calif.; and Barbara Germani, Cleveland, Ohio; and one granddaughter.
The visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit, Mo. Memorial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Silent Unity Chapel, Unity Village, Mo.

Frances Alberty
Frances C. "Connie" Alberty, 71, Forest Grove, Ore., died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at her home.
She was born July 2, 1929 in Humboldt, Kan., the daughter of John F. and Frances H. (Flynn) Koppers. She was raised and received her education in Olathe. Following high school, she attended the University of Kansas for two years.
She was married to Owen "Nelson" Alberty June 9, 1952 in Salem, Ore. They lived in San Diego, Calif., and then moved to Corvallis, Ore. They also lived in Beaverton, Ore., until 1991 when they moved to Forest Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 4, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her father. She had worked as a medical technologist, but focused her life on being a wife and mother.
She was a member of the Catholic Church. She attended Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverton and St. Anthony's Parish in Forest Grove.
She is survived by two daughters: Elaine Cline, Vancouver, Wash., and Anne Rogers, Cashmere, Wash.; a son: Eric Alberty, Kennewick, Wash.; her mother, Frances H. Koppers, Olathe; two sisters: Judith Janes, Kansas City, Mo., and Louise Stewart, Garnett, Kan.; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 1660 Elm Street, Forest Grove. Burial rites and inurnment will follow at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Pearl Allenbrand
Gertrude Pearl Allenbrand, 87, Olathe, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe.
She was born July 23, 1913, in Darlington, Mo., the daughter of Curtis Franklyn Smith and Mary Ann (Ashlock) Smith. She was a 1930 graduate of Darlington High School.
In 1939, she and her husband, A.C. Allenbrand, moved to a farm north of Olathe, where they made their home and reared their children.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Olathe and an active participant of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She also was the Sunday School pianist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A.C. Allenbrand, in 1988; four brothers, Oren, Ernest, Clarence and Fred Smith; and four grandchildren.
Survivors include seven sons, Fred Allenbrand, Curtis Allenbrand and Kenny Allenbrand, all of Olathe, Roger Allenbrand, Spring Hill, Woody Allenbrand, Grain Valley, Mo., Leland Allenbrand, Paola, and Dennis Allenbrand, Pittsburg; six daughters, Merilyn Sevein, Gig Harbor, Wash., Nell Ann Gaunt-Dean, Osage Beach, Mo., Patsy Jackson, Merced, Calif., Leila Chance, Richardson, Texas, Judy Roberts, Olathe, and Mary Jo McDaniel, DeSoto; two sisters, Lucille Saunders, Savannah, Mo., and Betty Woods, Salina; 32 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Ambrosen
Lloyd G. Ambrosen, 71, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center, Olathe.
He was born on April 12, 1930, in Helena, Mont., the son of Adolph and Anna (Madsen) Ambrosen. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in Germany with the 717 Bomber Squad, 28th Bomber Group, and he studied Behavioral Sciences at the University of California. He was a carpenter and mechanic and also worked as an aid in a mentally handicapped facility.
Mr. Ambrosen is preceded in death by his father, mother and a brother, LeRoy Ambrosen.
Survivors include a sister, Ada Holman, Dodge City, Kan.; and a brother, Lorence Ambrosen, Conifer, Colo.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Memorial Chapel of Olathe, 143rd and Black Bob Road. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kan.
Archie Anderberg
Archie Arthur Anderberg, 78, Edgerton, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at his home in Edgerton.
He was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Miller, S.D. He married Sheryl A. (Hutchinson) Anderberg on Aug. 28, 1948, in Huron, S.D. They were married 53 years.
He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D. He lived in South Dakota and Minnesota before moving to Kansas City in 1967. He moved to Edgerton in 1975. He worked as an accountant at the Amoco Oil Co. He served the company in many areas of the country and retired out of the Kansas City Regional office in 1980 after 32 years.
He attended the Edgerton United Methodist Church. He served in the Army during World War II, and spent time in the Pacific with the 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment Co. C. After leaving the service, he was the reunion coordinator and secretary for the 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Reg. Co. C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nels Arthur Anderberg and Elvira Fisher Anderberg.
Survivors include two sons, Marc Reed and wife Rafelina Anderberg of Austin, Texas, and John Charles Anderberg of Edgerton; a brother, Alvin Anderberg, Harligen, Texas; three sisters, Lucille Goertler, Chula Vista, Calif., Ilene Grogan, Miller, S.D., and Jean Anderberg, Portland, Ore.; and one step-grandson.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Edgerton United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Carrie Andrews, 89, Gardner, died May 22, 2001, at her home.
She was born Dec. 8, 1911, in Chaney, Mo., the daughter of Charley and Martha Fleetwood. She had lived in DeSoto for 49 years. She had made her home in West Plains, Mo., before moving to Sunflower, Kan., in 1951. She worked for Hercules Powder Co.
She was a member of the DeSoto Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ray Lane Jr.; four sisters, Lucille Fleetwood, Irene Fleetwood, Leona Dowling and Maggie Collins.
Survivors include a son, Mike and wife Jean Lane, Stockton, Mo.; a daughter, Ruby and husband, George Thorp, DeSoto; two sisters, Lola Dowling, Elwood, Ind., and Lorene Marsh, Gladstone, Mo.; two grandchildren, Danny Lane, Olathe, and Martha Longstreth, Lenexa; four great-grandchildren, Kirk and Bryan Lane, and Niki Fulls, all of Olathe, and Tricia Longstreth, Bolling Brook, Ill.; a stepgrandson, Terry Johnson, Oklahoma City, a stepgreat-grandson, Jessie Johnson, Oklahoma City.

Helena Andrews
Helena Andrews, 80, Olathe, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Royal Terrace Nursing Center, Olathe.
She was born April 21, 1921, in Deepwater, Mo., the daughter of Harry and Violette (Hurst) Sanders.
She graduated from Deepwater High School in 1939. She married Michael G. Andrews on June 29, 1946, in Clinton, Mo. She was a food worker of Olathe District Schools for 12 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, in 1997; a brother, John Sanders; and a sister, Retha Andrews.
She is survived by two sons, Gary M. Andrews, Olathe, and Terry D. Andrews, Barnhart, Mo.; three daughters, Sandra T. Edgington, of Pittsburg, Mo., Linda L. Andrews, Olathe, and Cheryl A. Andrews, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Harry J. Sanders, Pittsburg, Mo.; and three grandchildren.

Jacob Archer
Jacob L. Archer, 74, Olathe, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Olathe Medical Center.
He was born March 30, 1926, in Cottonwood Falls, Kan., the son of Jackson Leroy and Gertrude (Selves) Archer.
He had been an Olathe resident since 1954. He worked at Delco Battery General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Olathe General Baptist Church, United Auto Workers, and the local credit union.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine (Wright) Archer, of the home; a son, Doug Archer, Littleton, Colo.; three brothers, William Archer, Cottonwood Falls, Leroy Archer, Council Grove, Kan., and John Archer, Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Pat Johnson, Matfield Green, Kan.; Betty Meyer, Topeka, and Fern Moore, Diamond, Mo.; and a granddaughter.

Marie Arnett
EUDORA - Marie L. Arnett, 78, Lawrence, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the Eudora Nursing Center.
She was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Fredonia, Kan., the daughter of William and Bertha (Schiemann) Taeschner. She grew up in Fredonia. She graduated from Fredonia High School in 1939. She married Lewis Arnett in 1939 in Fredonia. She moved to Lawrence in 1965. She was a baker for Naismith Hall and Watkins Hospital at the University of Kansas until she retired July 30, 1986. Her hobbies included sewing, crochet and writing.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; a son, Mark Arnett; and a daughter, Sandra Hurney.
Survivors include three sons, Carl Arnett and Bob Arnett, both of Lawrence, and Alvin Nelson, Saint Charles, Mo.; a brother, Alvin Taeschner, Soldotna, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association or the Lawrence Humane Society.
Judy Arterburn
Judy Arterburn, 63, Olathe, died April 25, 2001, at her home.
She was born Sept. 5, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of William and Hazel (Gardner) Cook.
She lived in Olathe for the past 28 years, coming from Kansas City, Kan. She was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1955. She married her high-school sweetheart, John Arterburn, on Oct. 5, 1956. She worked at Santa Fe Trail Junior High School as a library clerk for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, John, of the home; two sons, John D. Arterburn Jr., Olathe, and Joseph D. Arterburn, Overland Park; one daughter, Jeanne R. DuPont, Olathe; two brothers, William Cook, Alaska, and Dale Cook, Oregon; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Norma Atwater
Norma Jean "Schlesener" Caswell Atwater, 64, Olathe, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
She was born June 1, 1936, in Williamsburg to Pearl Eva Walgomott Hammer.
After moving to Louisburg, she married Roy R. Caswell Sr. on June 14, 1951. Roy preceded her in death on June 23, 1977.
On Nov. 11, 1978, Norma married Robert W. Atwater in Louisburg. They moved to Olathe in 1988.
She worked as a bank teller for 20 years, most recently at the First National Bank and Trust in Olathe.
She was a member of the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Olathe. She enjoyed shopping, getting together with friends to play bunko, traveling and spending time with her loved ones.
Besides her mother, Pearl, and her first husband, Roy, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harvey Schlesener and one infant brother Ronald Ray Schlesener.
Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Atwater, of the home; six children, Linda Towne and her husband Mike, of Manhattan; Barbara Crust and her husband Bud of Harrisonville, Mo.; Kathy Johnston and her husband Jerry of Amsterdam, Mo.; Roy Caswell, Jr. and his wife Carrie of Greenville, Ky.; Michael Caswell and his wife Debbie of Louisburg; Debbie Reitinger and her husband Jim of Paola; one sister, Frances Kelly of Stillwell; one aunt, Elsie Flake of Block; Harry Schlesener of Olathe; one sister-in-law, Freda Schlesener of Osawatomie; 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Eva Azmy
Eva Marie Azmy, 57, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee.
She was born March 21, 1943, in Fargo, N.D. She was a graduate of East High School and the University of Wisconsin, both of Superior, Wis. She was a substitute teacher for the Olathe District Schools from 1979 to 1994.
She married Nabil Shoukry Azmy on Aug. 7, 1971. She was an active member for 21 years of the First Presbyterian Church, Olathe, where she sang in the choir. She was a former member of the Olathe Community Orchestra and Delphi.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Eva Marie Krumbein, and a brother, Robert Carl Krumbein, both in 1984; and her father, Carl Krumbein, in 1988.
Survivors include her husband, Nabil Azmy, Olathe; a daughter: Nancy Azmy, Olathe; and a sister: Carol Jacobsen, Minneapolis, Minn.
