Helen Irey
Helen G. Irey, 90, Gardner, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Olathe Medical Center. She was born April 18, 1910, in New Hampton, Mo., to Robert E. Maple and Orpha Young Maple. She moved to Gardner in 1987. She was a cook for Canteen Corp for two years; at Reece Hospital, Gardner; at Nike Junior High School for two years; and at Osawatomie State Hospital. She owned and operated a small Tavern in KC during the 1950s. She was married to Samuel S. Stevens; they were later divorced. She also was married to Charles Graham and John Irey; both preceded her in death. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gardner, and was a member of its Altar Society. She also was a member of Kitchen Workers Auxiliary at Osawatomie State Hospital. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Garland Maple. Survivors include three sons, Robert Stevens, New Hampton, Mo., Samuel Stevens, Parker, Kan., and Max Stevens, Polo, Mo.; an adopted daughter and caregiver, Sharon Lee, Eudora; her family, Gary Lee, Gardner; Teresa Anderson, Gardner; and Trenda Garrett, Eudora; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with the rosary at 7 p.m., today at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gardner. Burial will be at Antioch Cemetery, Spring Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Homer Irvin
Homer "Sonny" Wayne Irvin, 69, Belton, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center, Spring Hill. He was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Homer E. Irvin and Nellie Viola Powell Irvin. He had lived at the Beverly Health Care Center in Spring Hill for the last nine months. He previously had lived in Belton, Mo., for five years and before that, he had lived in Overland Park. He was a self-employed brick mason in Kansas City, Kan., for Local Union 18 since the 1950s. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Local 18 Bricklayers, and of the Eagles Club in South Park, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda Jackson. Survivors include two sisters, Delores G. Willford, Prairie Village, and Susan Laverne Stone, Spring Hill; and two brothers, Darrel and Keith Irvin, both of Louisburg. Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 23, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Stanley. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Bruce Funeral Home, Spring Hill. Russell Jacob
Russell Lloyd Jacob, 89, of Emporia, Kan., died March 5, 2001, at Vintage Manor, Emporia, Kan. He was born on Nov. 19, 1911, in Emporia, Kan., the son of Samuel C. and Minnie M. Richter Jacob. He married Arline G. Pedersen on June 2, 1935, at St. Mark's Lutheran, in Emporia. He was a farmer for 65 years. His memberships included Charter Member Rinker 4-H, 4-H Leader, Lyon County Farm Bureau, Lifetime Emporia Kansas Resident, Member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Clinton and Walter Jacob. He is survived by his two daughters, Geneice Linsey, Olathe, and Avis Jacob, Emporia, Kan.; one sister, Nora M. Waterman, of Emporia; two grandchildren, Laura Brosseau and Marilyn Rogers; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Emporia, with interment at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Memorial funds may be made to the St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

Marshall G. "Jake" Jacoby, 78, Kansas City, Kan., died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at his home. A memorial visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Jerry James
Jerry Williams James, 56, Olathe, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at his home. He was born Dec. 19, 1943, in Gardner, the son of Kenneth and Viola (Hillman) James. He had lived in Olathe over 30 years and worked for Olathe Ready Mix, Century Concrete and Quick Silver. Mr. James was a member of the Friends of the Kansas City Zoo and the Olathe Eagles Club Aerie No. 700, which he served as a former president. He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two sons, Rick James, Olathe, and Shane Hendrix, Holt, Mo.; three daughters, Tracy James, Debbie Williams and Shannon Hendrix, all of Olathe; a sister, Shirley Sanchez, San Diego, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the W.L. Frye and Son Funeral Home, Olathe. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Antioch Cemetery, Gardner. Zollie James
Zollie Thomas "Tommy" James, 73, of Ardmore, Okla., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore, Okla. He was born June 22, 1927, in Howe, Okla., the son of Zollie and Deenie James. He attended schools at #10 Howe, and Hutchison, Kansas, Business College. He was employed by general dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas; manager of Champlin Oil Company in Kansas City, Kan.; and owner/operator of Olathe Texaco Service Station. He was a veteran of World War II and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry James; a brother, Cecil James; and two infant sisters. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. James, Ardmore, Okla.; son and daughter-in-law, William and Debbie James, Olathe; grandson, Michael James, Olathe; grand-daughters, Shannon and Molly James, Olathe; two brothers, Archie James of Mecosta, Mich.; Curtis James of Poteau, Okla.; and four sisters, Jewell James, Poteau, Okla.; Leona Tell of Ardmore, Okla.; Cassie Jones, Oklahoma City; Lebrica Binns, Poteau, Okla. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, Okla.

Alan S. Jaskunas
Alan S. Jaskunas, 47, Olathe, died Saturday, Jan. 22, at Olathe Medical Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1952 in Chicago, Ill. He had lived in the Kansas City area since 1991. He was manager of the Mortgage Department for Peoples Bank in Overland Park, having been with the bank for several years. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and its Knights of Columbus Council. He was also a member of Mortgage Bankers Association. He was preceded in death by his father, Alphonse Jaskunas, in 1970. Survivors include his wife, Linda S. Jaskunas, of the home; one son Curt Taylor, Blue Springs, Mo.; two daughters, Rebecca Taylor and Laura S. Taylor, both of the home; his mother, Eleanor M. Jaskunas, Overland Park; and one brother, Thomas M. Jaskunas, Charleston, S.C. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 16000 W. 143rd street, Olathe. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 143rd and Blackbob Road, where rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Cremation will be the manner of burial.

Edward Jennings
Edward Lee Jennings, 78, of Spring Hill, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Medical Lodge Nursing Home, Gardner. He was born July 19, 1922, in Lexington, Okla., the son of James B. Jennings and Edith DeNayer Jennings. He had lived in Spring Hill for the last five years after living in Wellsville for 17 years. He married Betty J. Payne Jennings on March 20, 1943, in Butler, Mo. He was an operations manager for Spring Hill Grain Co. for 30 years. He retired in 1982 for health reasons. He also worked for Frisco Railroad for 15 years. His hobbies include camping and fishing. He was a member of the Spring Hill Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Jennings, and two sisters, Blanche Dighero and Edna Lifer. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; daughters and sons-in-laws; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and companion, Heidi. The visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday before the 2 p.m. funeral service at Bruce Funeral Home, Spring Hill. Burial will be at the Spring Hill Cemetery. Lloyd Johns
Lloyd Arthur Johns, 56, of Olathe, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Olathe Medical Center. He was born Oct. 8, 1944, in Winter Park, Fla. He had lived in Olathe for the past two years, having moved from Phoenix, Ariz. He was an army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Hyon Suk Johns, of the home; two sons, Patrick Johns, Vancouver, Wash., and Lloyd L. Johns, Olathe; two daughters, Sarah Marie Johns and Angela Christina Johns, both of Dallas; his mother, Belva Johns, Titusville, Fla.; a brother, David Johns of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Alice Pierce of North Carolina, and Barbara Tanner, Titusville, Fla.; and two grandsons. Gloria Johnson
Gloria Violet Vaunn Leonhardt Johnson, 84, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Olathe, died July 1, 2000, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa. She was born Oct. 2, 1915, in Stafford, Kan. She was a 1933 graduate of Pratt High School, and attended Emporia State University, where she studied journalism and mass communications. During the Depression, she was an overseas operator in the White Westinghouse Building in New York City. She married Menford "Joe" Johnson in 1939, and they moved to Fort Scott, Kan., where she assisted him in his duties as city jailer until his death in 1968. She worked with several Lutheran charities, including volunteering at nursing homes and crocheting for hospitals, as well as fund raising for charities for the elderly while she lived in Olathe. She recently had moved to Mesa from Olathe. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Johnson, Mesa, Ariz., and Keith Johnson, Pittsburg, Kan.; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

Jesse Johnson
Jesse Floyd Johnson, 16, Olathe, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at his home. He was born Dec. 28, 1983, in Overland Park, and had lived in Olathe for most of his life. He was a sophomore at Olathe South High School, where he was a junior-varsity letterman in football and was a part of its 1999 Sub-State Championship Team. He work-ed part-time at Jumpin' Catfish restaurant in Olathe. He was a member of the Johnson County Credit Union and was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Olathe. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Morgan D. and Christine L. Johnson, of the home; his mother and stepfather, Katherine Dawn and John R. Inman, Cordova, Tenn.; a sister, Randi Renee Johnson, Cordova; two stepbrothers, Chastin M. Lollas and Brock A. Lollas, both of the home; a stepsister, Carrie D. Inman, Cordova; his grandparents, John Johnson, Pleasanton, Kan., Carol Strode, Stilwell, and Terry and Sharon Pribble, Lakeland, Tenn.; two great-grandmothers, Mary E. Pribble, Peoria, Ill., and Millie Carlson, Memphis, Tenn.; and a step-great-grandfather, Carl Carlson, Memphis. Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Grace United Methodist Church, 115th Street and Ridgeview Road, Olathe. The funeral will immediately follow at 3 p.m. at the church. Mondessa Johnson
Mondessa Johnson, 77, of Olathe, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at the Olathe Medical Center. She was a former member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Olathe and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Gardner. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Blanche Johnson and Suzanne Hamilton; and three sisters Jane Boatwright, Quinn Beith and Doris Neal. Survivors include her husband, S. Patrick Johnson Sr., of the home; three sons, Saint Patrick "Skip" Johnson, Overland Park, Art Johnson, Kansas City, Kan., and William Barrow Johnson, Gardner; a daughter, Phyllis Hammond, Edwardsville; two sisters, Blanche Horn, Maud, Okla. and Billie Jones, Catoosa, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Olathe. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Olathe.

Dewey Jones Sr.
Dewey R. Jones Sr., 68, Olathe, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at his son's home in Shawnee. He was born June 10, 1931, in Kansas City, Kan., to Roy A. and Myrtle M. (Haling) Jones. He served in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Marine Corp. He married Geraldine Norris on Aug. 2, 1955, in Leavenworth. He was a heavy-equipment operator for Civil Service at Fort Leavenworth for many years, retiring because of disability in 1970. He then became a policeman in McLouth, Oskaloosa and later Nortonville, Kan., for a total of 21 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine, in 1999; and by a brother, Hank Jones. Survivors include three sons, Dewey "Lucky" Jones Jr., Shawnee, Michael Jones, McLouth, and Andrew Jones, Lansing; three brothers, Harry Jones, Shawnee, Marvin Jones, Leavenworth, and Rick Jones, Lansing; two sisters, Elizabeth Harris, Leavenworth, and Shirley Zink, Tonganoxie; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, at the chapel. Burial will follow at Fall Creek Cemetery, Jarbalo, Kan. The family requests memorial contributions to Hospice of Olathe.

Floyd Jones
Floyd "Bud" J. Jones, 79, Gardner, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Olathe Medical Center. He was born June 25, 1920, in Camargo, Okla., the son of Alvin Lamarr Jones and Mary Lue Etta (Evans) Jones. He moved to Gardner in 1958 as a soldier stationed at the Nike Missile Site, moving from his duty station in Seattle, Wash. He served 20 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1962. He was a World War II veteran, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and a Korean War veteran. He met his wife, Hildegard B. Hirsch, during WWII in Germany, and they were married in 1948 in Reno, Nev. He was a custodian for the Olathe School District for 19 years, retiring in 1989. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hildegard, in 1997; a brother; and five sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Grace Zander, Gardner; and two sisters, Jane Hunter, Fort Supply, Okla., and Mary Williams, Las Vegas. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 13, at the Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Gardner Cemetery, with a military graveside service. The family suggests memorial contributions to Olathe Hospice, in honor of his wife's care in 1997.

Frances Jones
Frances H. Jones, 89, Parsons, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons. She was born Oct. 15, 1910, at Tonkawa, Okla., to John and Cora (Ward) Glendenning. She attended school in Virgil, Kan., and graduated from high school in 1929. She attended Bethel College in Newton for one year. She married Nicholas W. Jones Jr. on Aug. 22, 1932, in Virgil. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Parsons, where she had lived since. Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1975. She was a poet and had had several poems published. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, three brothers and seven sisters. Survivors include two sons, Lewis Jones, San Diego, Calif., and Dale Jones, Osawatomie; five daughters, Mary Jo Spurgeon, Clearwater, Fla., Rose Briner, Hemet, Calif., Wilma "Billie" Hinman, McCune, Kan., Lois Anderson, Kansas City, Mo., and Janet Post, Olathe; a sister, Wilma Owen, Marion, Ind.; 24 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorials contributions to the Church of the Nazarene or the American Lung Association. Arrangements are by Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Parsons.

Harold Jones
Harold Clifton Jones, 82, Wellsville, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Milo, Mo., the son of Obrey Dickson Jones and Myrtle R. (Rapp) Jones. He married Marjorie Louise Oman on April 21, 1946, in Lee'Summit, Mo. He had moved in April to Wellsville from Gardner, where he had farmed many years. He was a dairy farmer all his life. He was a member of the Gardner Friends Church, Gardner. He also was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Dairy Herdsmen Improvement Association in Johnson County. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie C. Jones and Leon Jones; and a granddaughter, Jennifer. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Jones, of the home; a son, Russell C. Jones, Olathe; two daughters, Betty Frazier and Norma J. Shadoin, both of Gardner; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Gardner Friends Church. Burial will be at the Gardner Cemetery. Leland Jones
Leland V. Jones, 64, Bonner Springs, died Saturday, Jan. 29. Jones was born May 4, 1935, in Lachute, La. He worked as a youth minister for 13 years. He was a sheet metal worker from the age of 17 until his retirement. He also served in the U.S. Air Force. His hobbies included gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He and his wife Christine have lived in the Bonner Springs area for the past 19 years. Survivors include his wife Christine Jones, of the home; three sons Terry Fraker, Shawnee, Travis Fraker and Timothy Jones, both of the home; four daughters Teresa Lawrance, Indiana, Tampara Young, Tonganoxie, Jean Webber, Kansas and Wendy Gray, Missouri; three brothers Emmit Jones, Raymond Jones and Lamar Jones, all of Louisiana; three sisters Wanda Kent, Susie Fiuet and Janet Jones, all of Louisiana; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A family grave-side service will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 pm. - 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, with a memorial service held at 8 p.m., at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave., DeSoto, Kan.

Reba Jones
Reba M. Jones, 93, Chanute, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Park Place Rehabilitation Center of Chanute. She was born on Sept. 26, 1906, in Chanute,the daughter of Charles E. and Lizzie M. (Rowand) Harmon. She attended Chanute schools. She married Lester Herder; the couple lived in California, then later returned to Chanute and divorced. She later married Theodore Paul Jones, who preceded her in death on March 22, 1958. She worked at Baker Dress Factory and Burlington Overall Factory, and was a chiropractic assistant to Dr. E.O. Morris. She was a treasurer of the Chanute Genealogy Society. She compiled a book of all Neosho County marriages, and cataloged all of Neosho County and its graves; the Neosho County Cemeteries Book was dedicated to her in 1978. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary 1654, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineman Auxiliary. She was a member of, and taught junior-high Sunday School at, the First Assembly of God Church, Chanute. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two stepsons, T.P. Jones Jr. and Jim Jones; a stepdaughter, Leona Boub; three sisters, Salome Harmon, Reka Byers (a twin), and Dorothy Phillips; and two brothers, Bill Harmon and Robert Harmon. Survivors include two sons, George Herder, Virginia Beach, Va., and Joe Jones, Chanute; a sister, Lael Willis, Chanute; two brothers, George "Bud" Harmon, Chanute, and Harley Harmon, Shawnee; nine grandchildren, including Sherrie Lee, Olathe, and Reba Lucky, of the Olathe District Schools; several stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at the Chapel of Johnson Mortuary, Chanute. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute. Memorial contributions may be made to Horizon Hospice or the Cherry Street Youth Center, both in care of Johnson Mortuary.

Mary Jung
Mary Virginia Jung, 79, Olathe, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of James W. and Emma (Baucom) Hunter. She married William L. Jung Jr., who died in 1995. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 52 years. Survivors include a son, William L. Jung III, Pomme de Terre, Mo.; two daughters, Marilyn K. Heider, Olathe, and Sandra L. White, Grandview; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons, Johnson County Chapel in Overland Park. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Holly Justice
Holly Anne Justice, 17, Olathe, died Thursday, Nov. 30, due to a condition related to Marfan's syndrome. She was born in Dallas, and lived in the Pittsburg area for six years, before moving to Olathe. She attended Olathe South High School. She worked as a nanny and worked part-time in business with her mother at Belinda's Tropical Paradise. She is survived by her mother and father, Belinda and Carl Marley, of the home; grandparents, Ed and Ann Marley, Topeka, and Ilene and Richard Turner, Grove, Okla.; and many aunts and uncles and cousins. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 4, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Olathe. The visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and from 8 a.m. until service time on Monday, Dec. 4. The family suggests contributions to the Marfan Association, 328 Main Street, Port Washington, N.Y., 11050-3121.
