Marion Bacon
Marion Lee Bacon, 89, Olathe, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Olathe Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 3, 1911, in Richardson County, Neb., the son of Francis Marion Bacon and Harriett Mae Branaum Bacon. He moved with his family to Johnson County when he was three years old. He graduated from Gardner High School. He was a farmer all of his life. As a young man, he taught first through eighth grades for 11 years in a rural school in Pleasant View.
He married Ruth M. McCulley Bacon, on May 31, 1938, in Olathe.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau. He served on local zoning boards in Gardner and Spring Hill townships. He was a 4-H leader and Trophy Sponsor. He was a member of the Johnson County Water Board No. 5. He served on the Johnson County Fair Board, where he was the secretary and treasurer for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray M. Bacon, Roy Bacon, and Clarance E. Bacon; and two sisters, Mildred McKaig and Bessie Schendel.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of the home; three sisters, Florence Stithem, of Longmont, Colo.; and Nellie Bacon and Bernice Holden, both of Edgerton.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. today at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Stanley.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Gardner Athena Club Scholarship Fund.
Eugenia Bailes
Eugenia M. Bailes, 89, of Olathe, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Royal Terrace Care Center. Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home 143rd and Black Bob, where the family will receive friends following the service. Cremation.
Bailes was born March 20, 1911, in Clinton, Mo., living in Olathe the past 21 years living in the KC Metro area most of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa T. Bailes, in 1978.
She leaves a son: John Raybourn; three daughters, Nancy Glitten of Hermitage, Mo.; Donna Hicks, Stover, Mo.; and Ann Graham of Holts Summit, Mo.; a grandson, Ron Glitten of Olathe; 16 grandchildren; and many great and great-great grandchildren.
Edith Baker
PAOLA - Edith Maebell Baker, 97, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Country Haven Adult Care Center in Paola.
She was born Feb. 16, 1903, in Peculiar, Mo., the daughter of Orlando Leroy and Elizabeth W. (Kuykendal) Mossman.
She had been a resident of the Kansas City area most of her life. As a young woman, she lived in St. Louis. After marriage, she lived on farms near Greensburg and Fontana before moving to Olathe in 1952.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Olathe, the Christian Woman's Fellowship and the Bazaar Ladies - crocheting many items for the fall bazaars.
She liked to garden, was an avid reader especially poetry and enjoyed working crossword puzzles.
As a young woman, she worked as a switchboard operator and enjoyed working at the offices of Purine Mills in St. Louis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Theodore Baker, in 1961; one daughter, Dorothy Baker Henness; four brothers; two sisters; and a son-in-law, Awnee Henness.
Survivors include one son, Homer Baker and wife Sharon of Edgerton; one daughter, Barbara Kern and husband Franklin of Spring Hill; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a. m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at W.L. Frye and Son Funeral Home in Olathe. Visitation will be 10 a.m. Saturday prior to the services at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in Olathe.
Louise Bales
Louise H. Bales, 83, of Olathe, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Olathe Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Slater, MO., and lived there until she came to Kansas City, Mo., in 1939. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Overland Park for 40 years.
She began working out of her home in 1954 as a secretary for Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators and retired in 1988 as executive secretary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Bales, in 1981, after 40 years of marriage.
Survivors include a son, Howard Bales and his wife, Beth, Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Florice Bales, Olathe; three sisters, Florice Hawkins, Kansas City, Mo., Ruth Miller and husband, Dean of Raymore, Mo., and Joan Wood and husband, Leroy of Overland Park; one brother, Jim Ben Hawkins, and wife, Phyllis, of Savannah, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Mt. Moriah and Freeman Chapel, I-435 and Holmes Road. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 5, at the First Baptist Church of Overland Park with burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
The family suggests contributions be made to the National Parks Conservation Association.
Wendell Banning
Wendell G. Banning, 70, of Gardner, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Olathe Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 16, 1930, in Perkins, Okla. He was in the Marine Corp. and U.S. Air Force for 11 years.
Survivors include his wife, Dixie Banning, of the home; two sons, Chrisopher Banning, Gardner, and Terry Banning, of the home; two daughters, Melody Parkison, Kansas City, Mo. ,and Deborah Frost, Gardner; and seven grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at W.L. Frye and Son Funeral Home, Olathe. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Olathe.

Margaret Barclift
OVERLAND PARK, KS - Margaret Elizabeth Bigelow Barclift, 49, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at her home in Overland Park.
She was born Nov. 16, 1950 in Gardner. She was a life-long resident of Overland Park. She was a 1968 graduate of Gardner High School.
She owned a business in Shawnee, Kan., where she worked as a cosmetologist until she retired in 1998. She was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gardner.
She is preceded in death by her father James Vincent Bigelow. Survivors include her mother, Viola Mae Horn Bigelow McConnell, Overland Park; a stepfather, James Edward McConnell, Overland Park; a daughter, Shannon A. Foley, Lawrence, Kan.; a brother, James D. Bigelow, Tulsa, Okla.; and a sister, Rachel A. O'Connor, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gardner. She will be buried at the St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery, Gardner.

Jerry Barnes Sr.
Jerry Neal Barnes Sr., 67, of Satsuma, Fla., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka, Fla.
A native of Oklahoma, he had lived in Putnam County for the past eight years, coming from Ponte Vedra, Fla. He had served for 14 years in the U.S. Air Force and had retired from the U.S. Army. He had also worked as chief of police in Hiawatha, Kan., and as an electrician with the Lockhead Corporation in Jacksonville, Fla. He was also a Catholic.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Edna Barnes, Satsuma; two sons, Neal Barnes of Port Richey, Fla.; and Christopher Barnes of Olathe; two daughters, Elizabeth Rau of Portland, Ore.; and Susan Webb, Olathe; three stepsons, Rick Pearce of Olathe; Steven Darr of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and David Darr of Jacksonville, two stepdaughters, Vivian Brown of El Paso, Texas; and Jeannette Sexton, St. Louis, Mo.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Private services will be held by the family.

Margie Barnette
Margie Faye Barnette, 80, Jacksonville, Texas, died Friday, June 1, 2001, in Jacksonville.
She was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Bryans Mill, Texas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, W.E. "Jack" Barnette, of Jacksonville; a son, Harold Barnette, Olathe; two daughters, Neatha Ann Cagle, Jacksonville, and Carolyn Barnette, Olathe; a sister, Annie Lee Betts, Naples, Texas; a sister-in-law, Margaret Hobbs, Beaumont, Texas; a granddaughter, Annette Fox; and two great-granddaughters.
Funeral services are at 3 p.m. today at Thompson Chapel in Jacksonville. Burial will be held at Cathedral in the Pines.
Billie Barr
Belton, MO - Billie Irene Barr, 67, Belton, Mo., died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at her home.
She was born Jan. 8, 1934, in Ochletree, Kan. to Floyd and Addie C. Frazer Gillihan.
She was preceded in death by husband Jesse Glen Barr in 1976.
Survivors include two daughters, Deanna and husband Roy Lee Cowan of Belton, and Carol and husband Wayne Combs, Warsaw, Mo.; a sister, Beatrice Triebel of Olathe; sister-in-law and best friend Winnifred Whited of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Mike and John Rickerson, Wayne Combs, Jr., Emillee, Kaylee and Carlee Cowan; and six great grandchildren, Christopher, Shyann, Sean, Nathaniel, Kelsey Leanne Rickerson and Issac Hill.

Clarence Barrow Sr.
Clarence Edwin Barrow Sr., 75, died Oct. 21, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
He was born in Birmingham, Ala., to Myrtice and Robert Barrow, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Barrow, of the home; sister, Alma Hawkins, Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Clarence Barrow Jr., Kansas City, Mo.; and Donald Barrow, Oakland, Calif.; daughter, Rachel Barrow, Olathe; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 400 S. Spruce, Olathe. Services will be at 10 a.m. at the church.
Darlene Barry
Darlene F. Barry, 93, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Indian Meadows Nursing Home.
She was born Nov. 16, 1907, in Pittsburgh, Kan., to William Sharp and Nettie Mae Lovelady Sharp. She was a loving daughter to her mother. She devoted her life to Christ and was a member for many years of Evangelist Temple Church of God In Christ. Darlene was a member of the music department and several other auxiliaries. She was also affiliated with the Second Baptist Church of Olathe. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Barry; three brothers, Clifford Sharp, Wilford Sharp and Curtis Sharp Sr.; and two sisters, Katherine Sharp and Lorine Fowler.
Survivors include her children, Lillie Johnson and Robert Harrison of Kansas City, Mo.; nieces, Nettie Robinson and Bette Karst, both of Olathe; grandchildren, Ervin Johnson, Reuben Johnson, Vicki Johnson, Vanessa Fuller and Aaron Johnson, Cynthia Harrison, Patricia Harrison, Shelia Harrison, Mark Harrison, Enoch Harrison and Sarah Harrison; and a host of great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Watkins Brothers Memorial Chapel. Interment in Girard Cemetery, Girard, Kan.
Herchel Bates Jr.
Herchel L. Bates Jr., 71, of Paola, formerly of Olathe, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at his home.
He was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Herchel L. and Gertrude (Campbell) Bates Sr. He grew up in Fairway where he attended Shawnee Mission High School, graduating in 1946.
He married Patsy Joan Jackson in 1946. They had three children, Herchel III, Harold and Lucinda. Their marriage later ended in divorce. After their marriage, the family lived in and around the Fairway area before moving to Olathe in 1963.
In 1958, he started working for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Kansas City as a sales manager and eventually became plant manager in 1968. He retired in 1986.
He married Rosemary Poirier in 1973 in Olathe. They lived in Olathe until moving to Paola in 1976. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed horses and boating.
He was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Rosemary, on Oct. 7, 1995; and a sister, Iva Grant.
Survivors include two sons, Herchel L. Bates III, Olathe, and Harold Bates, St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Lucinda Bates, Paola; his mother, Gertrude Tolliet, San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Betty Hamlin, San Diego, Eva Pohl, Vista, Calif., and Doris Thompson, Los Angeles; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a lifelong friend, Jean Longshore, Osawatomie.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the First Christian Church, Osawatomie.

Marion Batson
Marion Carl Batson, 89, Spring Hill, formerly of Independence, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Beverly Nursing Home.
He was born April 24, 1911, in Bois D' Arc, Mo., and lived in Independence, Mo., for more than 50 years. He had worked for Corn Productions Co., North Kansas City, Mo., until his retirement in 1975. He had moved to the nursing home in March 1999 to be closer to his wife, daughters and family.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Batson; a grandson Robert M. Batson; and a granddaughter, Julie R. Kontovlas.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Leone M. Batson, Spring Hill; two daughters, Iva McCullough, Olathe, and Mary Kontovlas, Spring Hill; three brothers, Ray and Stanley Batson, both of Raytown, Mo., and Denzil Stanley, Republic, Mo.; and a sister, Pauline Robertson, Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Sheil Colonial Funeral Chapel, Raytown. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be at the Lee's Summit Cemetery in Lee's Summit, Mo.

Ferrol Baxter
Ferrol L. Baxter, 87, Overland Park, formerly of Lane, Kan., died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Windsor Court Assisted Living Center, Overland Park.
He was born July 3, 1913, at Pomona, Kan., the son of John and Lula (Karnes) Baxter. He began school at Boyd Rural School near Pomona and later moved with his family to Lane, where he graduated from Lane High School in 1931.
On Feb. 15, 1936, he married Creta Lee Bump at Santa Ana, Calif. She preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2000.
He and his wife resided in Compton, Calif., for 10 years after their marriage, where he worked as a truck driver for Helms Bakery. He later worked at the Nixon Grocery Store. He and his wife moved back to Lane where he worked as a milk hauler at Bennett's Creamery in Ottawa for many years. He operated a road maintainer for Franklin County for 10 years until his retirement in the early 1980s. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending time gardening and fishing the area rivers for flathead catfish. He was also an avid hunter in his younger days. He resided in Lane from 1946 to 1999.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Jackie Baxter; a daughter, Nancy Baxter; and three brothers, Jack, Kenneth and Max Baxter.
He is survived by three daughters, Candace Humerickhouse and her husband, Rick, Olathe, Susan Hiett and her husband, Bob, Olathe, and Patricia "Trish" Manos and husband, Anthony, Spring Hill; a brother, Marlin Baxter, Sun City, Ariz.; and five grandchildren, D.J. Hermreck, Lauren Hermreck, Sheena Humerickhouse, Ashley Humerickhouse and Shaun Manos.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lane Cemetery with Pastor Dennis M. Baxter officiating.
