Mrs. ETHINGTON, Aged 78, is Dead
Mrs. Elizabeth J. ETHINGTON, aged 78 years, 4 months, and 15 days, died yesterday at 9:25 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie REA, 557 South Fifth Street. Death was caused by paralysis. Mrs. ETHINGTON was taken ill Wednesday evening, December 20th. The funeral well be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from MEINEKE'S Chapel, conducted by Rev. J. Hybert POLLARD, of the Baptist church. Interment will be made in Neodesha cemetery. Elizabeth Jane CARTER was born in Fountain County, Indiana, 12-Aug-1938 and was married at the age of 20 to Scott S. ETHINGTON. After several years residence in Shawnee, Wabaunsee and Greenwood Counties, this state, the ETHINGTON family moved to Neodesha twelve year ago where Mr. ETHINGTON died in 1905. The deceased was the mother of seven children, two dying in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Dora (* I believe this is supposed to be Laura) MOSS, died at the age of 22 while a resident of Kansas City. The surviving children are Mrs. Ollie MALLORY (my GGrandmother), of Allen, Kansas; Mrs. Sarah BALDWIN, of Arkansas City and Mrs. Annie RAE and W. S. ETHINGTON (William), of this city, all of whom are expected here for the funeral services today. The deceased was a member of the Adventist church and was a woman who enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaitances.
J. M. FISHER, Mexican War Veteran Dead
Neodesha, Wilson County, Ks. - 27-Dec-1916
James FISHER, aged 91 years, a veteran of the Mexican War, died Christmas Day at his home in Duck Creek township. The funeral services will be held today from the family residence. The deceased came to this country in 1870 and had been active in church and public work during his long residence in Wilson County. At 20 years of age, Mr. FISHER enlisted in Captain WALKER's second Indiana Volunteers and was in Matomoras, Mexico, during the Mexican War, when discharged on account of illness. S. H. RENFRO, aged 89 years, who lately moved to Wichita and Samuel McFALL, 93, who lives southwest of Neodesha, are believed to be the only two remaining residents of Wilson County who saw service in the Mexican War.
Larry Edwards Buckley
Larry Edwards Buckley, 60, Little River, Kansas, died Thursday, August 17,
2000, at Lyons District Hospital, Lyons, Kansas.
He was born July 17, 1940, at McPherson, Kansas, son of Earnest N. "Jack"
and Mercedese Edwards Buckley. He was a 1962 graduate of Bethany College,
Lindsborg. A Little River resident since 1964, formerly of Canton and
Lindsborg, he was a music teacher in USD 444, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, Little
River.
On June 18, 1990, he married Cheryl Miller Robinson at Kinsley. She
survives.
Other survivors include: a son, George, Little River; a daughter, Jennifer
Buckley, Little River; two stepsons, Troy Robinson, Hutchinson, and Jon
Robinson, Little River; four stepdaughters, Christin Hogsett, Granby,
Missouri, Sheri Albright, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Dawn Lagergren, Alma,
and Jene' Kingsolver, Little River; and 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2000, at the
United Methodist Church, Little River, with the Revs. Ted Weis and Marc
McDonald officiating. Burial was in Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River.

Rev. Eugene K. Nelson
Rev. Eugene K. Nelson, 86, Lindsborg, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at Bethany Home, Lindsborg, Kansas.
He was born on April 9, 1914 at Marquette, Kansas, son of Carl Johann Algot and Augusta Mathilda (Johnson) Nelson. He
was a resident of Lindsborg since 1965, moving from Norwalk, California.
He received a Bachelors Degree in History and Political Science from Bethany College, Lindsborg, in 1937. He graduated
from Seminary at Rock Island, Illinois in 1941.
He was a retired ELCA Minister, serving at Algona, Iowa for 4 1/2 years; Holderidge, Nebraska for 9 years; Boone, Iowa
for 2 1/2 years; Norwalk, California for 9 years; and in Lindsborg, Kansas he served the Messiah and Freemount
congregations from 1965 until his retirement in 1979.
He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Rotary Club, Bethany College Alumni Association, and was an
Honorary Bethany College Football Chaplain, all of Lindsborg.
On June 15, 1940, he married Barbara F. Lacquement at Canton, Kansas. She passed away on May 20, 1994.
He was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.
Survivors include: two sons, C. Birger Nelson, Gig Harbor, Washington, and David E. Nelson, Kansas City, Missouri; a
daughter, Ingrid Kidd, Long Beach, California; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000, in Presser Hall Auditorium, Bethany College,
Lindsborg, with Pastors Dr. Victoria Brundage and Vance Eckstrom officiating. A private family burial was held in the
Freemount Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lindsborg, prior to the memorial service.

Henry G. Klein, 86, well known Marion, Kansas resident, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at St. Luke Hospital,
Marion.
He was born December 2, 1913 at Durham, Kansas, son of George and Anna (Geis) Klein, and grew up in the Durham
community. He was married to Olinda Brunner on February 12, 1936 at Durham.From 1943 until 1967, they lived and
farmed south of Marion. In 1967 they moved to Marion. In addition to farming,
Henry worked at Lynn's Equipment as ASCS office. Henry was a lifelong Lutheran. He was confirmed on May 6, 1928 at
Trinity Lutheran Church, Durham, and at the time of his death was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion, where
he was an active member. He had served in various church offices over the years and was a loyal member, helping whenever
he could.
His favorite hobby was horseshoes, a game he had enjoyed for years.
He also enjoyed sports on television.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lester, William, Edward and George; and two sisters Inez Meier
and Lillie Hiebert.
He is survived by his wife, Olinda, of the home; four daughters, Joan Bowers, and Kathleen Goentzel, both of Marion,
Arlene Bowers, Augusta, and Henrietta Chestnut, Marquette; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion, with Pastor John
Ryding officiating. Casket bearers were Michael Bowers, Linda Deiter, Jock Bowers, Jeffrey Goentzel, Christopher
Stinchcomb, and Blaine Stinchcomb Jr. Honorary casket bearer was Troy Bowers. Burial was in the Marion Cemetery.

Duane B. Brunk
Duane B. Brunk, 84, Hutchinson, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2000, at
the Hutchinson Hospital.
Duane was born August 11, 1916, at Marquette, Kansas, son of Alfred and
Ellen (Carlson) Brunk. He was a 1935 graduate of Marquette High School and
a 1938 graduate of Brown's Business College. On January 1, 1939 he married
Juanita I. Hines at Wichita. He had been a Hutchinson resident since 1942.
Duane was a route salesman for Produce and Dairy for 23 years. He was also
a Club Steward for the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #982 for 16 years and had
owned and operated Brunk Mowing and Yard Care Service for over 15 years.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #982, Hutchinson, and Fraternal
Order of Eagles Aerie #2550.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Eugene, and one sister,
Cleta.
Survivors include: his wife, Juanita Brunk, of the home; one son, Gary
Brunk, Sapulpa, Oklahoma; one daughter, Janiece "Jan" Rich, Hutchinson; six
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at
Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with Pastors John Schroeppel and H.O.
Lindeblad officiating.

Velma Jean Nelson
Velma Jean Nelson, 71, Lindsborg, formerly of rural Marquette, passed away
Thursday, September 14, 2000, at the Salina Regional Medical Center-Santa Fe
Campus.
Velma was born July 27, 1929, at rural Marquette, Kansas, daughter of
Mauritz and Katie (Smith) Johnson. She married Norman Lee Nelson on January
26, 1952, at Marquette. He passed away on July 15, 1989.
Velma was a homemaker and spent most of her life on the farm. After
Norman's passing, she moved to Lindsborg where she had lived for the past 10
years. She was a member of the Elim Lutheran Church, the WELCA
organization within the church, the Langley Empire Homemakers (L.E.H.) Club,
and the Quilt and Embroidery (Q & E) Club, all of Marquette.
Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters: infant Irene
Johnson, Dora Gile and Marie Gomer; and three brothers: Richard (Rick)
Johnson, Archie Johnson and Leslie Johnson.
Survivors include: one son, Deryl Nelson, El Reno, Oklahoma; one daughter,
Kathy Ponton, Delphos; one sister, Pauline Nelson, Lindsborg; and four
grandchildren, Randi and Bailey Ponton, Rowdy Nelson and Alichia Nelson.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 18, 2000, in the
Elim Lutheran Church, Marquette, with Pastor Larry Cross officiating.
Burial was in the Marquette Cemetery, north of Marquette.

Elizabeth A. Murray
Elizabeth A. Murray, 78, Augusta, formerly of Mankato, passed away Tuesday,
September 5, 2000, at Augusta Medical Complex Long Term Care.
Elizabeth was born June 28, 1922, at Langley, Kansas, daughter of Charles
and Myrtle (Oney) Johnson. She was a medical records technician, working
for Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield, and Republic County Hospital,
Belleville, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Free Methodist
Church, Winfield.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and two sisters, Eleanor Johnson,
and Edith Van Norman.
Survivors include: three daughters, Elaine Thomas, Mankato, Patricia Powell,
Colony, and Terry Standley, Augusta; three sisters, Edna Rush, Wynoka,
Oklahoma, Ethyle Hulse, Marquette, and the Rev. Eunice Davidson, Miltonvale;
eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 7, 2000 at
Melby Morturay, Mankato. Burial was in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato.
Raymond Rock accompanied Ethyle and Lawrence Hulse to Mankato on Thursday,
September 7 for the funeral and burial of Ethyle's sister Elizabeth.
Mae Nelson
Mae Nelson, 87, Lyons, passed away Friday, September 8, 2000, at the Lyons
Good Samaritan Center, Lyons, Kansas.
Mae was born May 25, 1913, at Memphis County, Missouri, daughter of James
and Nettie (Easly) Tucker. On April 30, 1930, she was united in marriage to
Ely E. Nelson at Hutchinson. He passed away May 16, 1974.
Mae was a homemaker and resident of Lyons since 1985, moving from Sterling,
Colorado. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Geneseo.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; one daughter, Beverly
Ann Nelson; three grandchildren, Edie Gustus, Philip Rinehart, and Reba
Nelson; two brothers, Lowell and Mark Tucker; and four sisters, Edith
Brayton, Zell Hayden, Velma Schafer, and Ethel Oden.
Survivors include: eight sons, Calvin Tucker, George Nelson, and John
Nelson, all of Lyons, Kenneth Nelson and Robert Nelson, both of McPherson,
Donald Nelson, Marquette, Charles Nelson, Tujunga, California, and Richard
Nelson, Springfield, Missouri; one daughter, Sandra Wingert, Hutchinson; one
brother, Dick Tucker, Lyons; one sister, June Revel, Hutchinson; 32
grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2000, at
Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson, with the Rev. Robert Friesen officiating.
Burial was in the McPherson Cemetery.

Harry Clarence Johnson
Harry Clarence Johnson, 88, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at
Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, Montana.
He was born May 13, 1912 in Marquette, Kansas to Erik and August (Jonsson)
Johnson, the youngest of 8 children, yet especially close with his sister,
Ethel, who was 12 years his senior.
Harry graduated from Marquette High School and from Kansas State University
with a B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1934. On October 15, 1939 he married
Margaret Johntz, the editorial director for Hallmark Cards, in Kansas City,
Missouri. The couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where Harry worked for
Montana Flour Mills. During World War II, they were transferred to the
company's home office in Great Falls, Montana. They remained in Great Falls
from 1944 to 1980, raising four children. In addition, the family also
hosted two Norwegian Exchange students. In 1968, ConAgra bought out Montana
Flour Mills and Harry retired from ConAgra in 1978 as Director of Montana
Operations.
In addition to traveling throughout the United States for business, Harry
and Margaret visited Norway. Vacations were spent visiting family or
relaxing in Montana. Harry collected duck stamps and barbed wire. He also
enjoyed football, tennis, and cross country skiing.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Kalispell, and served on
the Board of Elders and the Board of Trustees in Great Falls. He was a
member of the Great Falls Country Club, Director of the National Feed
Manufacturers Association, and a 50 year member Kiwanis. In 1981, he and
Margaret moved to Peaceful Bay at Lakeside, Montana, then to the Fairway
Blvd. Townhomes in Kalispell and eventually to the Immanuel Lutheran Home in
1997.
Harry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; three sons, Jim
Johnson, Attorney, Kalispell, Robert Johnson, Professor of Linguistics at
Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., and Dennis Johnson, Attorney and
Accountant, Portland, Oregon; one daughter, Signe Johnson, Manager of
Training and Organizational Development, Department of Consumer and Business
Services, Salem, Oregon; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the
First Presbyterian Church, Kalispell, with Pastor Glenn Burfeind
officiating.

CONCORDIA - Sister Marilyn Foote, 67, Concordia, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Nazareth Motherhouse, Concordia. Sister Foote was born
Dorothy Kathryn Foote in Black Wolf. She was a registered nurse at St. Mary?s Hospital, Manhattan; St. Joseph Hospital, Concordia; and St.
John?s Hospital, Salina. She served as executive counselor for the Sister of St. Joseph, Concordia, and later as administrator of Medaille
Center, Salina. She was a staff member at Manna House of Prayer, Concordia. Survivors include three sisters, Barbara Steiner of Great Bend,
Margaret Fox of St. Joseph, MO; and Kathleen Triplett of Junction City; and a brother, Thomas Foote of Bloomfield Hills, MI. The funeral was
at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Nazareth Convent Chapel, the Rev. Stephen Muth officiating. Burial was in Nazareth Cemetery. A wake was held

Salina, KS - Ivagene Humbargar, 72, died August 31, 2000 at her home in Salina, KS.BornClara Ivagene Andrews on August 30 1928 at
Salina. She had been a Salina resident her entire life. She had worked for the former St. Johns Hospital as a nurses aide and then for the former
Asbury Hospital as a nurses aide for over 30 years. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, the Silver Needles Club, the
Christian Womens Club, the F. E. C. Club, the Pennys for Friendship Club, and the Golden Years Center all of Salina, KS. She is preceded in
death by her husband, Milford L., who died in January 2000. She is survived by one son, Timothy, of Salina. Three daughters, Kay Dorit, of
Phillipsburg; Susan Roudybush of Holyrood; and Jane Burch of Salina. Three brothers, William Andrews and Thomas Andrews both of
Salina and Robert Andrews of Tescott. One sister, Myrtle Werner of Salina; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday,

Wendell P. Stull
1919-2000
CHAPMAN - Wendell P. Stull, 80, Chapman, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at Geary Community Hospital, Junction City. Mr. Stull was born
Nov. 26, 1919, at Palco and was a resident of Chapman since 1961. He coached and taught at Holyrood for 13 1/2 years and at Chapman High
School, where he was coach of the 1965 state championship basketball team and athletic director until retirement in 1985. He was an Army Air
Forces veteran of World War II and member of Plainville Masonic Lodge, Holyrood Order of the Eastern Star, Chapman American Legion Post
240 and Chapman United Methodist Church and was a life member of the National Education Association. Survivors include his wife,
Dorothy of the home; a son, Ronald of Topeka; a sister, Wanda Braun of Russell; a stepsister, Janice Sage of Granbury, Texas; and three
grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Chapman United Methodist Church, the Rev. Kenneth Trickle, Jr. officiating. Burial

Frances E. "Barney" Chiles

Holyrood - Frances E. 'Barney' Chiles, 91, formerly of Holyrood, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Wilson Nursing Center. Mrs. Chiles was
born Frances E. Barons on March 4, 1909, at Natoma. She was an office manager with Western Belfour in Denver and was a partner with her
husband in promitional advertising. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Holyrood and the church Ladies Aid and the American
Legion Auxiliary. Her husband, James, died in 1952. Survivors include a stepson, James T. Chiles, Jr. of Garland, TX. The funeral will be at
10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, Pastor John Sharp officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lyons

Bishop Robert Mize, Jr.
1907-2000
Salina - Bishop Robert Mize, Jr., who founded the Saint Francis Academy (then the St. Francis Boys Home) in 1945 in Ellsworth, KS, died on
August 17 in Fresno, California. He was 93. Mize was born February 4, 1907 in Emporia, to the Rev. Robert Mize, Sr., and wife Margaret. Mize
received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas, 1928, and went to the General Theological Seminary in New York City.
There he received a Master?s of Divinity in 1932. He later received a Doctor of Sacred Theology degree in 1960. He was ordained to the
Priesthood in November 1932 by his father, the then Bishop Mize. In 1945 he founded the St. Francis Boys Home and established Therapy In
Christ: a therapy founded on unconditional love, forgiveness, honesty, and starting and ending each day wth God. He served as director of
the Ellsworth and Salina campuses from 1945 to 1960. The Saint Francis Academy has grown to a national ministry of 30 programs in nine
states. After much thought, Mize answered a call to the Province of Southern Africa in 1960 and was consecrated Bishop of Damaraland. He
served in this capacity unil 1968 and remained as an assistant to his successor until 1970. The following three years, Mize was Vicar of Trinity
Marshall/St. Mary?s in Fayette, MO. From 1973 to 1976 he again lived in South Africa as a missionary to the Diocese of Botswana. He was
Vicar at St. Raphael in Oakhurst, CA, from 1977 to 1981. He was also Assisting Bishop. Mize has been a Collegial Bishop since 1970. He was
an associate with the Society of St. John the Evangelist and belonged to the Episcopal Synod of America. Memorial services will be held at St.
James Cathedral in Fresno, CA, Sunday, September 24, at 3 p.m.; and at Christ Cathedral in Salina, KS, Friday , September 29, at 11 a.m.

Freemount Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lindsborg, prior to the memorial service.

Henry G. Klein
Henry G. Klein, 86, well known Marion, Kansas resident, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at St. Luke Hospital,
Marion.
He was born December 2, 1913 at Durham, Kansas, son of George and Anna (Geis) Klein, and grew up in the Durham
community. He was married to Olinda Brunner on February 12, 1936 at Durham.From 1943 until 1967, they lived and
farmed south of Marion. In 1967 they moved to Marion. In addition to farming,
Henry worked at Lynn s Equipment as ASCS office.Henry was a lifelong Lutheran. He was confirmed on May 6, 1928 at
Trinity Lutheran Church, Durham, and at the time of his death was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion, where
he was an active member. He had served in various church offices over the years and was a loyal member, helping whenever
he could.
His favorite hobby was horseshoes, a game he had enjoyed for years.
He also enjoyed sports on television.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lester, William, Edward and George; and two sisters Inez Meier
and Lillie Hiebert.
He is survived by his wife, Olinda, of the home; four daughters, Joan Bowers, and Kathleen Goentzel, both of Marion,
Arlene Bowers, Augusta, and Henrietta Chestnut, Marquette; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion, with Pastor John
Ryding officiating. Casket bearers were Michael Bowers, Linda Deiter, Jock Bowers, Jeffrey Goentzel, Christopher
Stinchcomb, and Blaine Stinchcomb Jr. Honorary casket bearer was Troy Bowers. Burial was in the Marion Cemetery.
