Bird 65th
Lee Bird, son of Elmer and Bernice Bird and Lee’s wife Helen, daughter of Charles and Dora Dorfshaffer, will celebrate their 65th anniversary on Dec. 14, 2006.
Both were born and raised in Great Bend. One week after Pearl Harbor, they married in the Randolph Field Air Base Chapel, where Lee Bird was completing his flight training in the Army Air Corps before duty as a B-17 bomber pilot in the South Pacific.
The Bird’s eldest daughter, Sue, was born while Lee Bird was overseas.
He came home with the rank of Captain after the war, but remained a pilot in the Air Corps.
The Bird family moved, as Mr. Bird’s assignments changed.
Their second daughter, Beth, was born in Nebraska, their son Steve, in Alaska, and their youngest son, Stan, was born after Mr. Bird was transferred back to Texas.
When Captain Bird resigned from the Air Corps, the family moved to their roots in Great Bend, where they farmed for six years before Mr. Bird was hired as an airline pilot for a commercial airline based, once again, in Alaska.
Through the above moves, and others later, these children of Great Bend have had many experiences – most good, some not so good – as is always the case.
They are thankful to still be together after all of these years and would love to get a card from anyone who remembers them.
Cards may be sent c/o Sue Johnson, 895 Stillwater Drive, Coos Bay, OR 97420 or e-mail correspondence to bdjsey@aol.com
