Dodie Shreckengaust
1922-2004
Bonner Springs
Eldora "Dodie" Shreckengaust, 82, of Bonner Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Parkway Care Home in Edwardsville.
She was born Feb. 7, 1922, on a farm near Hastings, Minn. Her father, Carl A. Swanson, immigrated from Sweden and married Henrietta Anderson. Six children were born of this union, five boys and Dodie.
Life on the farm could get rough back in those days, and Dodie quickly learned to cook, clean, sew, and mend. She also spoke frequently about being able to keep up with the boys by learning to hunt, fish, garden, and care for the family's livestock.
She left the farm and married World War II veteran Clifford Shreckengaust. They owned The Ranch House Restaurant in Kansas City, Kan. for several years until his untimely death in an auto accident that nearly took her life as well.
She then moved to San Antonio, Texas. She became interested in becoming a barber, and graduated from barber school to open her own business in San Antonio.
After the death of her stepfather, Axel Holmgren, she returned home to Hastings to live with her mother. She purchased a large barbershop in Hastings and worked there for many years. With her Minnesota family, she enjoyed fishing year-round, camping, growing exceptional flowers in the summertime, and an occasional highball.
In the late 1980s, she returned to Kansas to be closer to her brother, Dale "Sharkey" Swanson, and his family. Dodie bought the barbershop in Edwardsville from Stan Head and ran a booming business in that location until shortly before her death.
In 1992, Dodie's niece, Wendy Peterson, and her husband, Brett, bought her a home in Bonner Springs, where she lived the next 12 years. She grew beautiful flowers, crocheted, and made many gallons of wine as well as Swedish delicacies for Christmas.
