William L. 'Lou' Daniels
SOUTH HUTCHINSON - William L. "Lou" Daniels, 93, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Mennonite Friendship Retirement Community, South Hutchinson.
He was born June 11, 1907, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Claude C. and Dollie E. Stump Daniels. A longtime Hutchinson resident, he was a retired elevator superintendent for Smoot Grain Co. at Hutchinson and Des Moines, Iowa.
He belonged to First United Methodist Church and Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 AF & AM, both at Hutchinson, the Wichita Consistory and the Midian Shrine, both at Wichita, and the AARP.
In 1956, he married
Bertha M. Ward at Cherokee, Okla. She died Oct. 21, 1997.
Survivors include: two daughters, Bette Nelson, Topeka, and Lillian Newborne, Bedford, Mass.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mennonite Friendship Retirement Community Chapel, South Hutchinson, with Dr. D. Allen Polen presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with Masonic graveside rites performed by Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 AF & AM.

HAVEN - Marvin J. Cupps, formerly of Haven, died June 6, 2000, at Sandpiper Bay Health Care Center, Wichita.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Van Campen Funeral Home, Haven.
Dorothy Louise Meier
HAVEN - Dorothy Louise Meier, Ph.D., 66, died June 4, 2000, at Santa Monica Medical Center, in California.
She was born Jan. 2, 1934, at Haven, the daughter of Walter H. and Helen Barber Meier. A former resident of Haven, she was a graduate of Haven High School, earned her B.A. from the University of Kansas in 1956; her M.A. from Northwestern University in 1957; and her Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1961. A resident of Malibu since 1968, she taught sociology at California State University at Northridge.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Haven, and Phi Beta Kappa.
She is survived by her former husband, Clarence H. Bradford, Malibu; and cousins.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery, Haven, with the Rev. Donald Adolf presiding. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Van Campen Funeral Home, Haven, to sign the register. The casket will remain closed.

Harry L. Smith
HAVEN - Harry L. Smith, 81, died June 24, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born March 28, 1919, at Burns, the son of Forrest H. and Ethel Marguerite Winegarner Smith. He graduated from Haven High School in 1937. A resident of Haven for the past 16 years, formerly of Alaska, California, Nevada and Oklahoma, he was a heavy equipment mechanic, working on the ALCAN Highway and specializing in diesel equipment during his time in the service. He was also a mechanic for Ford dealerships in the area and received the Gold Medallion Award for outstanding ability from the Ford Motor Company. He was a part-time employee of the city of Haven.
He belonged to Operating Engineers Union Local No. 101, the AARP and was active in the Haven Senior Center. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands.
Survivors include: two sisters, Donna Grass, Broomfield, and Winifred Priddle, Haven.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis Gene; and a sister, Winona Manning.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Van Campen Funeral Home, Haven.

Lillian Rose Epp
BUHLER - Lillian Rose Epp, 75, died May 30, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson.
She was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Freeman, S.D., the daughter of John W. and Eva Becker Schroeder. She worked at Grace Children's Home, Henderson, Neb. A longtime Hutchinson/Buhler resident, she was a volunteer at Central Christian School, Hutchinson.
She was a member of Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, Buhler, and a past president of the Herwanna Club.
She married
Harold R. Epp Dec. 30, 1954, in Henderson, Neb. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, David Epp, Sayre, Okla., and Paul Epp, Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Beverly Sullivan and Nancy Belknap, Hutchinson; two brothers, Edward Schroeder, Omaha, Neb., and Loyd Schroeder, Golden, Mo.; three sisters, Emma Dyck, Burnaby, B.C., Wanda Teichroew, Frazier, Mont., and Olivia Carlson, Hibbing, Minn.; and 11 grandchilren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy Schroeder.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, Buhler, with Pastors Nick Rempel and Brent Warkentin presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Buhler Mortuary, Buhler. Burial will be in Buhler Municipal cemetery.

Anna Schmidt
BUHLER - Anna Schmidt, 83, died May 22, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.
She was born March 24, 1917, in McPherson County, the daughter of Solomon P. and Agnes Friesen Ediger. A longtime resident of Buhler, living the past two years in Inman, she was a former employee of Heidebrecht Meats for several years, and also served as a volunteer at the Et Cetera Shop at Hutchinson.
She was a member of Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church in rural Inman and belonged to Happy Hour Sewing Circle.
On Dec. 15, 1939, she married
Arnold B. Schmidt in rural Inman. He died Jan. 7, 1998.
Survivors include: two sons, Larry and Arlo, both of Moundridge; two daughters, Marilyn Flaming, Peabody, and Judy Goering, Hillsboro; two sisters, Linda Guhr, North Newton, and Esther Nikkel, Moundridge; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Dick, Pete, Jake and Frank; an infant sister; and a granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Friday in Hoffnungsau Mennonite cemetery, rural Inman. Memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, with Pastor Dean Linsenmeyer presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Buhler Mortuary, with the family present for friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jean M. Conrad
BUHLER - Jean M. Conrad, 86, of Buhler, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Buhler Sunshine Home.
She was born Feb. 23, 1914, at Lewis Springs, Ariz., the daughter of William Fred and Jessie M. McCord Rather. She graduated from high school at Gate, Okla. A Hutchinson resident since 1986, moving from Kiowa, she worked as a timekeeper at Boeing, Wichita, during World War II and for nine years at Sam P. Wallingford Grain Co., Wichita, before retiring as a bookkeeper from First State Bank in Kiowa. She later worked as a receptionist at the Kiowa Clinic.
She belonged to Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson, and served as a WAC Private in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
On June 6, 1954, she married
Marvin D. Conrad at Kiowa. He died June 24, 1977.
Survivors include: two stepsons; a stepdaughter; a sister, Hazel Christiansen, Buhler; three nephews and a niece.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Rather.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mount Zion cemetery, Burlington, Okla.

William R. Schmutz
BUHLER - William R. Schmutz, 81, died June 6, 2000, at his home.
He was born Nov. 29, 1918, in California, Mo., the son of Frederick and Mable Lovick Schmutz. He attended schools in California, Mo. A resident of Buhler since 1993, moving from South Hutchinson, he was a truck driver for Graves Truck Line, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union.
He married
Karren Mead at Lyons on Oct. 10, 1987. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Billy, Wichita, and Paul, Hutchinson; and a sister, Frieda Hurt, Lyndon.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cora Ann Gilmore Schmutz; two brothers; and a sister.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Johnson & Sons Memorial Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Bob Brown officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park, Hutchinson.

Francis H. 'Curly' Sickmon
ARLINGTON - Francis H. "Curly" Sickmon, 91, died May 23, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born July 9, 1908, at Sego, the son of Ray E. and Lydia Moore Sickmon. A lifetime Arlington-Sego community resident, he was a maintainer-operator for the Kansas Department of Transportation, retiring in 1974.
He belonged to Arlington United Methodist Church, Cable Masonic Lodge No. 299, A.F. & A.M., and the Ninnescah Senior Citizens Center, all at Arlington.
On Oct. 19, 1933, he married
Genevieve "Tiny" Feese in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Darrel, Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Marjorie Rickett, Wichita, and Patricia Kelman, Arlington; a sister, Pearl Edith Coons, Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy.
Funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. today, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Revs. Elaine K. Lord and Dennis Wallace presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time today at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Sego cemetery.
