Laura Jarred

Laura Katherine Jarred, 79, of Butler, Mo., died Jan. 21, 2005. Service was Jan. 24 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler, with Pastor Geoff Bare officiating, and Tuesday at Kechi cemetery, Kechi.

She was born Jan. 27, 1925, in Amoret, Mo., the daughter of William McKinley Scybert and Serena Belle Braden. She married James Loran Jarred on March 1, 1944, in Mound City. She worked as a sales clerk for an aircraft manufacturing plant in San Diego. In 1965, she began working for TG&Y in Park City. She moved to Butler in 1996. She was a member of Amoret Christian Church. She enjoyed quilting, reading, crossword puzzles, vegetable and flower gardening and crocheting afghans. She also enjoyed cooking while spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a daughter, Carolyn Louise West.

Other survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James “Buddy” and Colet Jarred of Adrian, Mo.; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Ron Halliburton of Butler, Lorna and Chuck Hockanson of Wichita, Mary and Jim Trebilcock of Winston, Ga.; sister, Norma Belle Johnson of Kent, Wash.; stepmother, Eva Scybert of Emmett, Idaho; four half-sisters and spouses, Wilma and Tito Gonzalez, Lena May and Paul Wyant, Gerry and Bob Rains, Margaret Sanisteven, all of Emmett; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Josephine Dawson

Josephine E. Dawson, 74, of Aitkin, Minn., mother and mother-in-law of Tom and Peggy Dawson and Vicki Smith, all of Valley Center, died Jan. 22, 2005. Service was Jan. 26 at Holy Family Catholic Church, McGregor, Minn., with Fr. John Fleischhacker officiating.

She was born July 17, 1930, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Sylvester Graff and Mae Aldrich. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Dawson, in 1996; a son, Jim; a sister; and her father.

Other survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Winnie Dawson of Aitkin, Bill and Sarah Dawson, John Dawson, all of Wisconsin; daughter and son-in-law, Sherrill and Joe McDonald of Duluth, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 10 siblings; and many nieces and nephews.

Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin, had charge.

Lloyd Scott

Lloyd Linnear Scott Jr., 83, of Wichita, retired Veteran’s Administration loan officer, died Jan. 12, 2005. Service was Jan. 16 at First United Methodist Church, Valley Center.

He was born June 19, 1921, in Douglass, the son of Lloyd Linnear Scott Sr. and Margaret Freu Shannon. He was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claire M. Scott; daughter, Linda Sue; brother, Bill; sister, Suzie; and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; son, Skip Scott of Stevenson, Wash.; daughter, Becky Howe of Oklahoma City, Okla.; stepson, Roger Swilling of Columbia, Mo.; stepdaughter, Nancy Koch of Salina; brother, Jim Leayman of Douglass; sisters, Nancy Gilbert of Winfield, MaryLou Hall of Phoenix, Ariz., Betty Stipp of Phoenix; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the Lloyd L. Scott Jr. Scholarship Fund in care of the church. Baker Funeral Home had charge.

Terry Taylor

Terry T. Taylor, 79, formerly of Park City, father of Scottie Ivy and Tinia Grigsby, both of Park City, died Dec. 24, 2004. He was a retired toolmaker and salesman in the aircraft industry. A memorial service was held Jan. 7 at Advantage Funeral and Cremation, Wichita.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Wichita; sons, Craig, George of San Diego, Calif.; daughters, Glenna Druif of Lowdon, Tenn., Debra Dawson of San Diego, Calif., Deana Barbeau, Jacy Linker, both of Wichita; stepson, Charles B. Fox III of Greenwood, Ind.; stepdaughter, Tamra R. Grinage of Coppers Cove, Texas; 16 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Roberta Mendez

Roberta L. “Nana” Mendez, 47, of Wichita, sister and sister-in-law of Cherie and Troy Lenox of Valley Center, died Jan. 5, 2005. She was a homemaker. Service was Jan. 10 at Cochran Mortuary.

Other survivors include her husband, Javier Mendez; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeremy Allred and Irma Diaz, Jared Mendez, all of Wichita; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer Ruth, Tiffany and Gary Carter, Andrea and Jeremy Hersh, Mariah Mendez, all of Wichita; parents, Karen and Tommy Ruth of Wichita; brothers and sister-in-law, Michael and Judy Ruth of Derby, Ronald Ruth, Marc Ruth, Roger Ruth, all of Wichita; sister and brother-in-law, Alberta and Kenny Bishop of Wichita; four grandchildren, Miranda Ruth, Edward Leecy, Gariston Carter, Tevin Allred; seven nieces; and four nephews.

A memorial has been established with the Roberta Mendez Memorial Fund, TECU Credit Union, 6300 W. 21st, Wichita 67205.

Nelda Bowen

Nelda Claire Bowen, 65, of Park City, property manager, died Jan. 5, 2005. Service was Jan. 10 at Resthaven Mortuary, Wichita.

She was preceded in death by a son, Rick Bowen.

Survivors include her son, Darrel of Wichita; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Steve Baily of Weatherford, Texas; brothers and sister-in-law, Roy and Verna Morgan of Wichita, Leon Morgan of Alabama; sisters and brothers-in-law, Geraldine and Merle Wilcox of Wichita, Mary and Verdie Allen of Knobnoster, Mo.; grandchild and spouse, Steve and Stacie Baily of Ft. Worth, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Tyler.

M. Virginia King

M. Virginia Atha King, mother and mother-in-law of Jarene and Jacques Fluker of Valley Center, died Jan. 1, 2005. Service was Jan. 4 at Cherryvale Christian Church with Pastor Geral Zuck officiating.

She was born Aug. 29, 1923, on a farm near Girard, the youngest of five children born to Cleo Atha and Christene Cleland. After graduating from Girard High School in 1940, she was employed by the Corps of Engineers at the Kansas Ordinance Plant in Parsons. She married Evert Eugene King on May 19, 1945, in Enid, Okla., where he was serving as a flight instructor. He survives. After active duty discharge, the couple made their home in Cherryvale where they operated King Brothers Grocery for several years. The King family began farming in 1954. She worked many jobs most of her life to help sustain the family. She was a member of the Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron, and volunteered with Red Cross blood drives and at the local nursing home. She was an active member of the church.

Other survivors include her children and their spouses, Roger and Merle Jean King of Cherryvale, Christena LaForge of Parsons, Vickie and Doug Rike of Parsons, Kevin and Lois King of Cherryvale; her 104-year-old sister-in-law, Anna Atha of Detroit, Mich.; 11 grandchldren; and 15 great-grndchildren.

Memorials have been established with the church and the American Diabetes Association.

Kenneth Moore

Kenneth Marlin Moore, 84, of Emporia, brother of Ila Blenkinsop of Valley Center, died Jan. 5, 2005. He was a retired Santa Fe Railroad employee.

He was born July 12, 1920, in Strong City, the son of Lanious Wilson Moore and Essie Ann Lester. They preceded him in death, as did his wife, Katy Moore; son, Marlin Moore; brothers, Melvin, Oscar and Paul Moore; and a sister, Doris Hicks. He served in the U.S. Army.

Other survivors include his brother, Herbert Moore of Crawford, Colo.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with VFW Post #1980, 932 Graphic Arts Road, Emporia 66801.

Dean Schraw

Dean Martin Schraw, 54, of Rock Hill, S.C., died Jan. 9, 2005. Service is at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, Rock Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Glenice; sons, Glendon, Kendall; daughter, Deanette Schraw; two brothers; two sisters; and two granddaughters.

Darrell Harris

Darrell Gene Harris, 60, of Park City, retired concrete finishing crew foreman for MacDonald Construction Co., died Jan. 10, 2005. Service is at 1 p.m. Monday at Baker Funeral Home.

He was born Sept. 1, 1944 in Independence, the son of Woodrow D. and Frances Harris. They survive. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1963 and Cowley County Community College in 1965, and was a member of the schools’ tennis teams. He worked for MacDonald Construction Co. from 1967 to 1988, retiring early due to health concerns. He enjoyed fishing and helping others.

Other survivors include his brothers, Ronald L. Harris of Junction City, Doyle K. Harris of Wichita; nephew, Brian Harris of Lawrence, uncle and aunt, Ed and Eva DeGroot of Simi Valley, Calif.; and friends, Gene and Ellie Wolthausen of Wichita.

Chester Lacy

Chester D. Lacy, 67, of Cheney, brother of Frank Lacy of Valley Center, died Jan. 7, 2005. He was a self-employed contractor. Service was Jan. 10 at Cheney Baptist Church. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Norwich.

He was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Wichita, the son of Jesse E. Lacy and Pearl I. Dauster. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Other survivors include his wife, Barbara; son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Judy Lacy of Norwich; brothers, Jim of Kansas, Mo., Danny of Gilbert, Ariz.; sister, Georgia Buckner of Wichita; grandchildren, Ashley and Dale Coehn; and great-grandchild, Courtleigh Hargis.

Memorials have been established with Hospice of Kansas and Valley of Hope.

Albert Sanders

Albert C. “Pappy” Sanders, 83, of rural Sedgwick, formerly of Valley Center, died Jan. 7, 2005. He was a Missouri Pacific truck driver. Service was Jan. 11 at Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead, with Fr. Thomas Wai officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Valley cemetery, Bentley.

He was born July 28, 1921, at Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Joe C. Sanders and Leta Winkle. They preceded him in death, as did his daughter, Mary Susan Bushey; brothers, Robert, Leonard and Lee Sanders; and sisters, Maurine Orr, Dorothy Lahr and Jane Boyington. He married Evelyn Jane Potter on June 21, 1979, in Wichita. She survives. He was a member of the Derby VFW Post #7253, and Teamsters Local #795 of Wichita.

Other survivors include his son, Ron Sanders of Wichita; stepson, Alfred Parker Jr. of Atoka, Okla.; stepdaughter, Sandy Loveall of Wichita; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Caring Hands Humane Society in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.

Donah Robertson

Donah J. Robertson, 68, of Mountain Home, Ark., mother and mother-in-law of Doyle Jr. and Sheryl Robertson and Liz and Wendell Chance, all of Valley Center, died Dec. 27, 2004. She was a former Wichita resident and manufacturing assembler and press operator. Service was Dec. 31 at Baxter County Funeral Home and Cremation Society, Mountain Home.

She was born May 13, 1936, in Medford, Okla., the daughter of Lee McClaflin and Pauline Collins. She married Doyle L. Robertson on Nov. 30, 1956, in Newkirk, Okla. He survives. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister.

Other survivors include her son, Mark Robertson of Wichita; daughter, Tina Thome of Wichita; mother of Arkansas City; brother, Bobby McClaflin of South Dakota; and sisters, Carolyn Patterson of Mountain Home, Kay Porter of Arkansas City.

Don Goering

Don Goering, 54, of Goddard, died Dec. 24, 2004. He was a Valley Center High School graduate. Service was Dec. 29 at Central Christian Church, Wichita. Burial was at Greenwood cemetery, Newton.

He was a farmer, craftsman and former eighth-grade science teacher at Goddard Middle School.

He married Valley Center High School graduate Susan Mendenhall. She survives.

Other survivors include Craig and Amber of Wichita, Brian and Erika of Dallas, Texas; mother and stepfather, Grace Goering-Voth and Marvin E. Voth of Moundridge; brother and sister-in-law, Ivan and Linda Goering of Sedgwick; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Glen Buller of Freemont, Calif.; grandchild, Isaac Goering of Dallas, Texas.

A memorial has been established with His Helping Hands Ministry, in care of Central Christian Church, 2900 N. Rock Road, Wichita 67226. Downing & Lahey Mortuary had charge.

Jay Woodside

Jay Woodside, 65, of Wichita, father and father-in-law of Ronda and Guy McKay of Kechi, died Dec. 25, 2004. Service is at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday) at Lakeview Funeral Home, Wichita.

He was born Jan. 6, 1939, in Dodge City, the son of Claude and Harriet Woodside. They preceded him in death. He was a computer programmer at Boeing, and was a retired race car driver.

Other survivors include his wife, Pat, sons, Rocky, Randy, both of Wichita; stepsons, Jason Bedient, Eric Bedient, both of Wichita; stepdaughter and spouse, Sheila and Maurice Boucher of Graham, Texas; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his cat, Whiskers.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Hospice and The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, in care of Wells Fargo Bank, Jay Woodside Benefit Fund, PO Box 269, Knoxville, Iowa 50138.

Beverly Armstrong

Beverly Elizabeth Lehman Armstrong, 71, of Valley Center, retired Tierney Metals Sales and Valley Center Chamber of Commerce secretary for 20 years, died Dec. 3, 2004. Service was Dec. 6 at First United Methodist Church. She was the first person to be buried in the new Valley Center cemetery, Valley Center.

She was born July 3, 1933, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Bernice Danner Cochran and Hobert Paul Lehman. They preceded her in death. She married Carlos “Corky” Armstrong on May 5, 1953, in Valley Center. He survives.

Other survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Andrea “Andi” and Eldon Miller, Carla and Denny Farrell, all of Valley Center; sister, Nancy Scriven of Valley Center; brother, Larry Lehman of Littleton, Colo.; granddaughters, Paris and Jackie Farrell, Aubrie and Bailey Miller, all of Valley Center.

Memorials have been established with the Miss Bevie Scholarship Fund through the Valley Players, in care of Baker Funeral Home, and with the church music fund. Baker Funeral Home had charge.
