Margaret Banke Longston
TULSA, Okla. -- Margaret Banke Longston, 88, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Tulsa, Okla.
She was born Nov. 19, 1913, at Breezy Hill, to Nicholas Steve and Mary Angelic Krantz Banke.
She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg and then taught school at Chicopee.
On Sept. 5, 1938, she married William Henry Longston at Cherokee. She taught school at Kansas City. In 1970, they moved to the Enid, Okla., area, where she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Oakwood Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Janet Sue Briggs of Tulsa; a son, William Henry Longston Jr. of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Minnie Kazmierski of Pittsburg; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Beasley.
Funeral services were Thursday, Dec. 27, at Oakwood Christian Church, with the Rev. Joe Wilson officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Arrangements were under the direction of Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.
Sister M. Flora Mayer
WICHITA -- Sister M. Flora Mayer, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Mount St. Mary Convent, Wichita.
She was born June 24, 1913, at Neodesha, to Matthias and Marian Mayer. She attended elementary schools at Neodesha and Wichita and graduated Cathedral High School.
Sister Flora entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita on Sept. 4, 1930, and made her final vows Aug. 15, 1936.
Her ministry of education, which was spent entirely in Kansas, lasted nearly 53 years. She taught at St. Mary's Elementary School, Pittsburg; Holy Name Catholic School, Coffeyville; St. Patrick Catholic School, Kingman; St. Andrew's Catholic School, Independence; and St. John's Catholic School, El Dorado. She served as principal of Sacred Heart Catholic School, Pratt; St. Mary's Catholic School, Parsons; St. Andrew's Catholic School, Wright; and St. Mary Cathedral High School, Wichita. She taught art at St. Mary of the Plains High School and St. Mary of the Plains College, both at Dodge City.
Sister Flora was a member of several art associations and art education associations. She judged art shows and lectured on religious art. She retired from teaching in 1988.
Survivors include two nieces and two nephews.
Mass of Christian burial was Friday, Jan. 4, at Resurrection Chapel in Mount St. Mary Convent, Wichita.
Jerry Mack Schirk
SAN ANTONIO, Texas-- Jerry Mack Schirk, 56, of San Antonio, Texas, died at 10:28 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Christas Santa Rosa Hospital, San Antonio.
He was born July 30, 1945, at Pittsburg, to Mack and Leona (Speilman) Schirk.
He grew up at Pittsburg and graduated from St. Mary's High School.
After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy, in which he served for 20 years.
On June 16, 1968, he married Deloris Waltz. They later divorced.
After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Schirk worked for the federal government as an administrative officer for the Immigration and Naturalization Service until his death.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Schirk of San Antonio; four brothers, Jim Schirk of Overland Park, Robert Schirk of Pittsburg, Troy Schirk of St. Louis and Richard Schirk of Pittsburg; one sister, Mary Carol Leabo of Pittsburg; and Deloris Schirk and Joseph Sylvester of San Antonio, who provided for his care.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Schirk has been cremated. Services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at San Antonio. Arrangements are under the direction of Shertz Funeral Home.
Mary Evelyn Stringer
ARKANSAS CITY -- Mary Evelyn Stringer, 67, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City.
She was born June 27, 1934, at Hepler, to William Dale and Angie Jewell Bruce Stringer.
She resided in the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center from 1948 until several years ago, when she began living in the Creative Community Living Center of Arkansas City.
Survivors include a brother, Wayne Stringer of Fort Scott, and a sister, Maude Burns of Iola.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a half-brother, Gene Bauder.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hepler Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery. Services are under the direction of Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, Fort Scott.
Marjory F. Campbell
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Marjory F. Campbell, 83, of Arma, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Carondolet Manor, Kansas City, Mo.
She was born May 7, 1919, at Mulberry.
She had been a Kansas City and Raytown, Mo., resident. She retired in 1985 from Allied Signal (Bendix) Corp.
Survivors include one son, James M. Campbell, of Wellsville; one daughter, Phyllis A. Fanton, of Raytown; one brother, John Goodman, of Princeton, Mo.; one sister, Mary Gesslein, of Arma; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin G. Campbell, in 1956; one brother, James Goodman, and three sisters, Blanche Ziebert, Margaret Krohn and Helen Cox.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sheil Colonial Chapel, Kansas City, Mo. A scripture service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Sheil Colonial Chapel, Kansas City.
Tye Chadwicke Carter
FORSYTH, Mo. - Tye Chadwicke Carter, 32, formerly of Lawrence, died as a result of cardiac arrest, Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Forsyth, Mo.
He was born June 27, 1969, at Lawrence, to Ed and Becky Carter.
He had lived in Forsyth for the past eight years.
He was a graduate of Lawrence High School and was attending college at Springfield, where he received Phi Beta Kappa honors and was named to the National Dean's List.
Survivors include his parents; his wife, Pamela Jackson Carter, of the home, and his children, Kaylin Carter, of Lawrence, and Chessa Carter and Olivia and Chris Jackson of the home at Forsyth; three sisters, Kelli Wenger, Kayla Riley and Rebecca Chavez, of Lawrence; one brother, Hugh Carter, of Denver; his grandmother, Cleo Burgin Walthour, of Pittsburg, and 12 nieces and nephews.
A Christian service will be today at The River Church, Forsyth, under the direction of the Whelchel Funeral Chapel. A private Catholic mass and burial will be held at Lawrence on Tuesday with Fr. Vincent Krische officiating. Friends are invited to join the family in a celebration of his life at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Carter family home, Lawrence. Warren McElwain Funeral Home is in charge of Lawrence arrangements.
Roy Rolland Perry Jr.
Roy Rolland Perry Jr., 82, died at 12:02 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at his home in Pittsburg following a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 14, 1920, at Cherokee, Okla., to Roy and Gladys Wilson Perry.
He was a lifetime resident of southeast Kansas. He was a 1938 graduate of Pittsburg High School. He served in Italy and North Africa during World War II in the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps.
On Oct. 14, 1952, he married Betty Seifert at Pittsburg. She survives of the home.
He worked more than 30 years for Deill Construction Co. as a job superintendent.
Additional survivors include one son, Roy R. Perry III, of Pittsburg; one daughter, Pamela Simoncic, of Pittsburg, and one grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg, with the Rev. Verl Strong officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home after noon Monday. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Homes, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg.
Michael Reineri
Michael Reineri, 60, a former Pittsburg resident, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2002, after a brief illness.
He was born at Pittsburg to Lou and Charlene Reineri. He grew up at Raleigh, N.C.
Mr. Reineri spent the last 46 years as a radio broadcaster, working at Chicago, Atlanta and Jacksonville, Fla., before spending seven years at Cleveland and the past 27 in south Florida. In November of 2001, he was inducted into the Radio and Television Broadcasters hall of Fame and was recognized on the floor of Congress by former mayor of Cleveland, Congressman Dennis Kucinich.
He was active in fund-raising for the Boys and Girls Club, serving on the Board of Directors for several years.
Survivors include his parents of Pittsburg; his wife, Barbara; a son, Mark Reineri; two daughters, Jennifer Goldstein and Lesley Rousso; a sister, Marne Bonomo; and four grandchildren.
Private services were held.
Clifford P. 'Cliff' Wood
PARSONS - Clifford P. "Cliff" Wood, 78, of Parsons, died at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Labette County Medical Center in Parsons. He had been ill for two weeks.
He was born July 29, 1924, at Arma to Orval and Elva (Hefton) Wood.
He grew up in the rural St. Paul area and graduated from Erie High School in 1942.
On March 4, 1945, he married Eileen M. Hayward at Erie and moved to Parsons that year. She preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 2000.
He was employed by Kansas Power and Light Co. for 41 years as a marketing representative. He also was an agent for the Shelter Insurance Co. for 35 years, and owned and managed rental houses and apartments for many years.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Parsons Lodge No. 117 A.F. & A.M. He was a former member of the Lions Club and the Exchange Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Larson of Parsons; one brother, Dean Wood of Frederick, Md.; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a special friend and companion, Mayellen Bayless of Parsons.
He also was preceded in death by a sister, Florine Wood, and an infant son, David Paul Wood.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons with the Rev. Peggy Hillmon and the Rev. Steve Schulze officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Masonic rites will be given by Parsons Lodge No. 117 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Arrangements are under the direction of Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
Norbert J. 'Bud' Beeler
FORT SCOTT - Norbert J. "Bud" Beeler, 75, of Fort Scott, died early Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott.
He was born April 10, 1928, at Kansas City, Mo., to Bernard N. and Lucille Kressig Beeler.
He was a graduate of Butler High School and attended Fort Scott Junior College while working at Cheney's Chapel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was discharged in 1954.
He moved to Prairie Village and worked for Stine & McClure Funeral Home for 20 years. He returned to Fort Scott to manage and later own Cheney's Memorial Chapel. He and his wife sold the business in 1989.
He was a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 796, in which he was a fourth degree knight. He had been a member of the Missouri Jaycees and served as vice president and state treasurer. He was a member of the South Central Business Association and was active in Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce and served a term as vice president. He was past president of Fort Scott Senior Citizens, former president and organizer of Fort Scott Pride, active in the Fort Scott Lions Club for 20 years and served as its president, and was a former member of the Eagles Lodge, serving as president for six years.
He married Pauline G. Stoughton Warren on Feb. 12, 1953, at Fort Scott. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Patricia Morris of Louisburg and Rebecca Beatson of Olathe; two sons, Gary M. Warren of Branson, Mo., and Dr. Stephen Dale Warren of Vail, Colo.; two sisters, Barbara Eddington of Salisbury, Mo., and Mary Louise Neblock of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; two brothers, Col. William Beeler of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert Beeler of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandsons; seven granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel in Fort Scott with William James Schafer of Mercy Pastoral Care officiating. Cremation will follow with private family burial. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. Tuesday until service time at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel.
Francis Earl Davis
GOLDEN CITY, Mo. - Francis Earl Davis, 89, of Golden City, Mo., died at 12:25 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at his home.
He was born March 15, 1914, at Montezuma to Clarence E. and Etrulia (Meyer) Davis.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a longtime Barton County resident and had farmed nearly all his life. He was a member of Golden City United Methodist Church.
He married Frances May Holliday on Dec. 24, 1962, at Golden City. She survives.
Additional survivors include one brother, Myrl Davis of Lamar, Mo.; one sister, Elsie Cooley of Lamar; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Davis, Gerald Davis and Elmer Davis; and one sister, Wanda Blackford.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Golden City with Lamar V.F.W. Post 3691 conducting graveside military honors. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Daniel Funeral Home.
Maxine Myrtle Freed
Maxine Myrtle Freed, 91, of Pittsburg, formerly of Joplin, Mo., died at 4:52 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Medicalodge South in Pittsburg.
She was born Oct. 10, 1912, at Chugwater, Wyo., to John and Ethel May Anglen Freed.
She worked in the housekeeping department at Missouri Southern State University until she retired. She was a member of Family Worship Center in Galena.
Survivors include a sister, Flotilla Arne of rural Asbury, Mo., and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brenner Mortuary Chapel in Pittsburg with the Rev. Jim Turley and the Rev. Kenny Miner officiating. Burial will be in Purcell Cemetery in Purcell, Mo. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Thursday at the chapel. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Brenner Mortuary. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary.
Glen Eldred Hastings
LAWRENCE - Glen Eldred Hastings, 84, of Lawrence, formerly of Golden City, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.
He was a retired vocational instructor for Haskell University.
Survivors include two daughters, Janie C. Hawkins of Lawrence and Diana K. Martin of Frontenac; one sister, Leila B. Owen of Springdale, Ark.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at United Methodist Church in Golden City. Burial was at Mt. Carmel Cemetery near Golden City. Visitation was Friday in Lawrence. Arrangements are under the direction of Pugh Funeral Home of Golden City.
Doris NaDean McCorkle
CARL JUNCTION, Mo. - Doris NaDean McCorkle, 75, of Carol Junction, Mo., died at 8:19 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, after a long illness.
She was born March 18, 1928, at Asbury, Mo., to Truman F. and Retha V. Gasser.
She worked at Elders Manufacturing for several years. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Christian Church of Smithville.
She married Albert E. McCorkle on March 12, 1946. He preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1987.
Survivors include two sons, Bert McCorkle and Chris McCorkle, both of Carl Junction; one sister, Linda Bishop of Pittsburg; her mother, Retha Ward of Carl Junction; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her father and an infant son.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Carl Junction Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Simpson Funeral Home in Carl Junction. Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home.
