Samuel Everett 'Rocky' Hagerman 1921-2001
WALDPORT, Ore. - Samuel Everett "Rocky" Hagerman, 79, died March 2 at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, Ore. He was born Aug. 22, 1921, in Walsh, Colo., the son of Samuel and Lucy Campbell Hagerman. He attended school in Stafford. He married Colleen Drumm Sept. 9, 1944, in Auckland, New Zealand. A resident of Waldport, he was retired from Massey-Ferguson and also worked for J.I. Case. Hagerman was a member of American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend and St. Matthews Catholic Church in Elk City, Okla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the U.S.S. Honolulu in Hawaii during the Pearl harbor bombing. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Raymond Hagerman of Sheboygan, Wis., and Roger Hagerman of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter, Debbie Schram of Yachats, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services were held March 6 at the church in Newport. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport, Ore.

Lillian Yvonne Durant 1934-2001
MEDICINE LODGE - Lillian Yvonne Durant, 66, died March 14 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. She was born Sept. 27, 1934, in Galatia, the daughter of John E. and Elizabeth Wilhelm Kaiser. A resident of Medicine Lodge for 34 years, she was a community-living instructor at Arrowhead West. Survivors include two sons, Robert Durant of Albuquerque, N.M., and Russell Durant of Medicine Lodge; two sisters, Joyce Schiller of Great Bend and Donna Kaiser of Barstow, Calif.; and one grandchild. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Larrison-Forsyth Funeral Home in Medicine Lodge with the Rev. Tom Walters officiating. Burial will be at Highland cemetery in Medicine Lodge. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Arrowhead West, in care of the funeral home.

John Harry Ward
John Harry Ward 80, died March 16, 2001, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Wilmore, the son of Ollie Harry and Cora Elizabeth Carter Ward. He married Lilla Hazel Liggett on June 4, 1950, in Fayetteville Ark. He retired from Esfeld engineering in 1985 and moved to Great Bend from La Crosse. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Justin Ward of Wichita, one brother, Ralph Ward of Hazelton; and three grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by four brothers Floyd Ward, Loyd Ward, Merton Ward and Paul Ward. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend with the Rev. David W. Beeson officiating. Friends may call from 1- 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until noon Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home. Memorial are suggested to the family.

Leonard V. "Brushie" Stos
OLMITZ - Leonard V. "Brushie" Stos, 80, died March 15, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Otis, the son of Joseph and Julia Axman Stos. He married Helen Budig May 18, 1943, at Great Bend. He was a lifetime resident of the Otis-Olmitz area, a farmer and oilfield worker. He retired in 1985. Stos was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Olmitz. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Leonard J. "Butch" Stos of Heizer, Randy Stos of Otis and Timothy Stos of Olmitz; two daughters, Karolyn Schaffer of La Crosse and Debra Stos of Otis; one brother, Bernard Stos of Otis; one sister, Mary Schiller of Odin; five grandchildren; one step grandchild; and four step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph V. Stos and his twin, Leo Stos. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Wake service will be at 7:30 tonight, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Friends may call from 1-9 tonight. Lane F. Keenan
OVERLAND PARK - Lane F. Keenan, 52, died March 15, 2001, at St. Joseph Health Center. born Nov. 29, 1948, in Larned, he was the son of Ora and Marieda Keenan. He was a general sales manager for various liquor companies for 20 years as well as a sponsor for Kansas City Chiefs Ambassador. Survivors include his wife, Karen; one son, Troy; one daughter, Amy; three grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry Keenan, Don Keenan and Mark Keenan; and two sisters, Mary Elliott and Anne Steinbacher. Rosary will be at 6 tonight at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road in Overland Park. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Church of the Nativity, 3800 West 119th Street in Overland Park. Burial will be at Resurrection cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. today. William J. Schoendaller
LA CROSSE - William J. Schoendaller, 71, died March 15, 2001 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born April 9, 1929, in Liebenthal, the son of John and Anna Catherine Kruetzer Schoendaller. He married Edna Werth Oct. 25, 1948. He was a lifetime resident of Rush County, working as the general manager of the Farmer's Co-op of La Crosse for 27 years. He was also employed by the Farmer's and Merchants State Bank, the Home State Bank of La Crosse and The Commerce Bank of Hays. Schoendaller was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society and the Knights of Columbus all of La Crosse. He was also a former city commissioner and mayor of La Crosse. Survivors include his wife; three daughters Ann Saindon of Ellis, and Sharon Webster and Cecelia Morse, both of La Crosse; one brother Robert Schoendaller of Wichita; three sisters, Louise Horning of Ransom, Irene Steckline of Hays and Georgia Steckline of Wichita' and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three, sisters Caroline Schuckman, Minnie Stump and Eva Heigert. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse with the Revs. Benjamin Martin, Ken Schuckman and William Miller officiating. Burial will be at at La Crosse City cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. The Rev. Delmer James Harders
BENTON - The Rev. Delmer James Harders, 70, Benton, died March 15, 2001, at his home. born April 25, 1930, at Great Bend, he was the son of Frederick and Anna Hemken Harders. He married Leila Marie Barger Oct. 2, 1949, in Great Bend. He was employed by Parkersburg Rig and Reel and later studied for the Lutheran ministry. He served congregations in Canton, Moundridge, Pittsburg and Colome, S.D. He was youth counselor for many years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Wichita. He was an Air Force veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Dale Harders of Roseville, Ill., and Scott Harders of Moundridge; two daughters, Michele Parker and Lisa Standfast, both of Benton; three bothers, Marion Harders and Robert Harders, both of Great Bend, and Allen Harders of Sun City, Calif.; two sisters, Marjorie Murphy and Gladys Brack, both of Great Bend; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Sue Harders; and two brothers, Martin Harders and Ralph Harders. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Joel Frank and Jonathan Rockhoff officiating. Burial with graveside military honors by the 184th Bomb Wing Honor Guard of the Kansas Air National Guard will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call from 4-9 today at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Eve Rickenbrode
Eve Rickenbrode, 92, formerly of Bushton, died Feb. 23, 2001, at her home in Robbindale, Minn. She was a clerk at the Bushton Post Office for many years. She was a member of Bushton Untied Methodist Church, Methodist Women and Double Seven Club. Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Weinmeister; three grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral was March 1 at Pilgrim Methodist Church in Plymouth, Minn. Gill Brothers Funeral Home of Minneapolis, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.

Everett Watson, 92
HAVILAND - Everett Watson, died March 15, 2001, at Kiowa County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born Jan. 5, 1909, in Kiowa County near Haviland, the son of Jesse Gilbert and Laura Watson Larkin. He married Viola M. Myers Nov. 11, 1934, in Wichita. He was a lifetime resident of Kiowa County and a farmer. Larkin attended Kansas State University and was a member of Haviland United Methodist Church, IOOF Lodge, Kiowa County Historical Society and a former member of Kiowa County Farm Bureau and Brenham Cooperative. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Raymond Larkin of Hoisington; one daughter, Nancy Larkin of the home; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Marie Prince; and three brothers, Otis Larkin, Loren Larkin and Willard Larkin; and one sister, Blanch Hesston. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Gene Slack officiating. Burial will be at Haviland cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. today at Fleener Funeral Home in Greensburg. Memorials are suggested to the church or Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, in care of the funeral home.

Jessie E. Woods
Jessie E. Woods, 92, Great Bend, died March 17, 2001, at IHS of Great Bend. She was born Jan. 27, 1909, in Stafford County, the daughter of William and Clara Miller Schulz. She married James H. Woods Aug. 28, 1928, in Wichita. He died Feb. 6, 1958. Woods was a pioneer aviatrix and she and her husband founded the Flying Aces Air Circus, the longest running air circus in U.S. history. She was named pilot of the year by the Washington State Pilots Association in 1967 and was an employee of Washington state. Woods was a member of the Ninety-Nines International Women Pilots, OX 5 Pioneers, received the OX 5 Aviation Pioneer Woman award and was elected to the OX 5 Aviation Pioneers Hall of Fame in 1985. In 1991, she received the A.E. Aviation Award from the Zonta Club of St. Petersburg, Fla., and in 1994 she was named to the Pioneer Women in Aviation Hall of Fame in Orlando, Fla. Also in 1994, she was the only woman to be honored as an eagle at the Gathering of Eagles at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. Survivors include one niece, Marjorie L. Phillips of El Cajon, Calif. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John with the Rev. Dr. Tom Keith officiating. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Bryant Christians Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Jessie Woods Space Scholarship Fund.

Lawrence A. Bates 1916-2001
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Lawrence A. Bates, 84, died March 15 in Columbus. He was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Stockton. He was a 1940 graduate of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. He married Frances Evelyn Allen. A resident of Columbus, he was retired from the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. Bates was a member of United Methodist Church in Hoisington. Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Anita Bates of Gahanna, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Laree and Larry Morgenstern of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Gladys Bates White of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Miller Chapel at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. Inurnment will be at Gypsum Hill cemetery in Salina. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Wesleyan Athletic Department, in care of Schoedinger Northeast Chapel in Gahanna, Ohio.

Allen L. Prosser 1949-2001
RUSSELL - Allen L. Prosser, 51, died March 18 at Gatewood Care Center in Russell. He was born Sept. 28, 1949, in Great Bend, the son of Jospeh T. and Emma J. Reif Prosser. He was a resident of Russell for nine years, coming from Hoisington. Prosser was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Hoisington, and St. Marys Catholic Church in Russell. Survivors include his father, of Kinsley; two brothers, James J. Prosser of Springfield, Mo., and Steven C. Prosser of Wichita; nine sisters, Joyce E. White, Bonnie J. Schremmer, Celeste M. Meitner, all of Hoisington, Lois A. McClain of Goddard, Rita J. Solorio of Emporia, Nona S. Parli of Marion, Nancy D. Yackshaw of Norfolk, Va., Patti L. Myers of Borger, Texas, and Annie A. Holmes of Wellington. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Prosser. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all at Nicholson Ricke-Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church in Hoisington with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiaiting. Burial will be at St. John cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Gatewood Care Center or St. John cemetery, both in care of the funeral home.

Mary Margaret Hebrank 1908-2001
COUNCIL GROVE - Mary Margaret Scott Hebrank, 93, died March 18 at Wharton Manor Nursing Home in Manhattan. She was born Jan. 25, 1908, at the family homestead southeast of Council Grove, the daughter of Robert and Johanna Wodke Scott. She was a 1925 graduate of Council Grove High School. She married Albert E. Hebrank on June 12, 1929 in Wilsey. He died July 21, 1967. A resident of Council Grove since 1967, coming from Wilsey, she was a homemaker and a teacher for four years in Council Grove. Mrs. Hebrank was a member of the United Methodist Church of Council Grove, Sunday school teacher, and 4-H leader. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Hebrank of Manhattan; one daughter, Mary Weil of Great Bend; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Scott, and three sisters, Ann Scott, Rosalie Wallace and Stella Revere. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Council Grove. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery in Council Grove. Memorials are suggested to the Church, in care of the Kendall Funeral Chapel in Council Grove.

Elmer E. Cross 1916-2001
PRATT - Elmer E. Cross, 84, died March 17 at Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was born July 19, 1916, at Winfield, the son of Earl F. and Delia Kimberline Cross. He was a graduate of Emporia State University. He married Helen McGovney Dec. 28, 1941, in Cunningham. She died Nov. 10, 2000. A resident of Pratt, he was a high school teacher at Pratt and also a Pratt County juvenile officer. Cross was a member of First United Methodist Church, Optimist Club, Elks Lodge and Retired Teachers Association, all of Pratt. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. Survivors include five sons, John Cross of Great Bend, Larry Cross of Denver, Colo., David Cross of Shorncliffe, Queensland, Australia, George Cross and Steven Cross, both of Pratt; three daughters, Carol Freund of Cunningham, Kathleen Pugh of Sylvia and Susan Parsons of Pratt; one sister; Leona Burger of Chautauqua; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo Cross and Otis Cross; and one grandson, Eric Cross. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the church with the Rev. Kendal Utt officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to the church, Pratt Community College or Emporia State University, all in care of Larrison Mortuary in Pratt.

Alice D. Swanson 1915-2001
BUSHTON - Alice D. Swanson, 85, died March 19 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 3, 1915, at Sumner County, the daughter of W.D. and Ethel Lula Frey Hull. She married Paul Swanson Sep. 22, 1937, in Lyons. He died May 9, 1988. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Bushton, she was a former school teacher. Mrs. Swanson was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Sew & So Club, Double 7 and women's Bible class; a teacher of Menninger Bible Class, a 4-H leader, and chairperson of the church memorial committee, all of Bushton. Survivors include one son, John O. Reynolds of Great Bend; one daughter, Nancy Herman of Great Bend; one sister, Helen Stapleton of Lyons; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Bushton with the Revs. Barbara Parker and Mark Pennington officiating. Burial will be at Geneseo cemetery. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at Sillin Funeral in Lyons. Memorials are suggested to the church or Golden Belt Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Alice Mary Stegman 1922-2001
HOLCOMB - Alice Mary Stegman, 78, died March 17 at her home in Holcomb. She was born Nov. 2, 1922, in Kinlsley, the daughter of Phillip and Eva Adams Frick. She attended Kinsley schools. She married Julius Stegman Oct. 14, 1943, in Offerle. He died Aug. 5, 1989. A resident of Holcomb, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Stegaman was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, all of Garden City. Survivors include four sons, Allen Stegman, Mike Stegman and Scott Stegman, all of Holcomb, and Greg Stegman of Delray Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Diane Florio of Branchville, N.J.; two brothers, Elmer Frick and Lester Frick, both of Kinsley; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m.Wednesday at the church in Garden City with a Daughters of Isabella Rosary following. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be at Valley View cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 5-8 today and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, both at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Alice Stegman Scholarship Fund for the Holcomb Booster Club, both in care of the funeral home.
