Fred L. Souchek, 77, of Salina, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at Kaye Pogue Hospice Hospital in Salina.

He was born Sept. 29, 1930, in Abilene, the son of Fred P. and Edna Landes Souchek. The family lived in Abilene, Missouri, Lucas, Jewell and Salina. He graduated from high school in Salina.

He married Martha Dawdy on Sept. 17, 1950, in Jewell.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janet Pearson, Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Alan Souchek, Concordia; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A celebration of life service is set for 10 a.m. today (Saturday, June 21, 2008), at First Christian Church, Concordia. Burial is in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church of Hospice Hospital of Salina, in care of Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.

Lester 'Gene' Roberts

HERINGTON — Gene Roberts, 71, of Herington, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at the Herington Municipal Hospital.

He was born June 6, 1937, in Ozarks, Mo., the son of Lester Everett and Joy E. (Deeds) Roberts.

He married Lorraine K. Rohloff on Nov. 26, 1976, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Mr. Roberts worked as power plant operator for the City of Herington’s Water and Light Department. He also worked for Welch Manufacturing and later for Oswald Manufacturing and was a handyman/repairman.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of Herington; one daughter, Lori Roberts of Herington; one brother, Eddie Roberts of Ozark, Mo.; and four sisters, Joy Ingram of Yakima, Wash., Rose Mell of Long Beach, Calif., Grace Stevens of Ozark, Mo., and Marie Van Camp of Ava, Mo.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Penny Hankins, in May 2008.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Herington with Pastor Troy Slater officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or Southeast Dickinson County Special Olympics and sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS 67449-3038.

Leland Mick

NEWTON — Leland A. Mick of Newton died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008.

He was born May 29, 1939, the son of Lawrence F. and Wilma (Greiner)?Mick on a farm near Tipton. He graduated in 1957 from Tipton High School and from Creighton University in 1961.

He married Doris Koenigsman of Tipton on Aug. 20, 1960.

Mr. Mick worked as a one-room school teacher, was a manager with Bell Telephone, owned a manufacturing company and later worked for Collins Bus Manufacturing, Hutchinson and Keyes Manufacturing in Newton.

He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was a religion instructor. He also coached numerous youth baseball and softball teams.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, after 41 years. He later married Annie Stephenson and they spent most of their married life at Newton Presbyterian Manor. She also preceded him in death.

Survivors include eight children, Joan Slipke of Bristol, Conn., Tom Mick of Nebraska City, Neb., Doug Mick, Richard Mick and Roger Mick, all of Newton, Chris Bacon of Abilene, Karla McMillan of Lyons, John Mick of Carleton, Neb.; three brothers, Kenny Mick of Omaha, Neb., Larry Mick of Mesa, Ariz., and David Mick of Sand Springs, Okla.; and 33 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton, with the Rev. Jim Mainzer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newton.

A rosary will take place at the church at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Peterson Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the St. Mary’s School Building Fund in Newton or the Alzheimers Association and sent in care of Peterson Funeral Home, 215 N. Main, Newton, KS 67114.

Robert Sexton

Robert B. Sexton, 77, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.

He was born March 30, 1931, at Topeka, the son of Benjamin and Agnes Forrester Sexton. He grew to manhood south of Abilene and graduated in 1949 from Abilene High School.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1957 from the engineering school.

Mr. Sexton began his working career with Westinghouse in Tennessee and later worked for the Ampex Corporation in California.

Survivors include one daughter, Marta Masotti of Bologne, Italy; two sons, Andrew Sexton of Cleveland, Ohio, and Michael Sexton of Portland, Ore.; and one brother, Bruce Sexton of Abilene; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be at a later time. Danner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sophie Murray

Sophie Murray, 83, of Abilene, Kansas, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at her home with her family at her side.

She was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Langencels, Germany, the daughter of Jeffin and Angelika Manukowski. She grew to womanhood in Germany and attended local schools and graduated from High School.

She was united in marriage with John Patrick Murray. They made their home in Chapman, Kansas, until 1981 moving to Abilene to make their home. He preceded her in death on July 6, 1983.

She had worked at the Chapman Valley Manor prior to moving to Abilene. Sophie had an engaging personality and sparkling blue eyes. She loved to travel, garden and share time with family and friends. She Will Be Missed.

Surviving are five daughters, Kiescha Gormley, Abilene, Kansas, Sheila Wagner and husband Claus, Coberg, Germany, Cindy Ross and husband Dale, Abilene, Kansas, Kathy Garcia and husband Randy, Wakefield, Kansas; and Sue Patterson and husband Rich, Topeka, Kansas; four sons, John Murray and wife Suzanne, Lewiston, Idaho, Mike Murray and wife Brenda, Wichita, Kansas; Jim Murray and wife Kathy, Abilene, Kansas; Dan Murray and wife Jeanne, Upland, Kansas; a sister, Martha Ehrsam, Bieberbach, Germany; 18 grandchildren, Don, Zackery, Sophie, Alexandra, Daniela, Melissa, Gina, Matt, Kris, Jesse, Rikki, Ty, Nicole, Amber, Sean, Rhiannon, Randi and Emily; 17 great-grandchildren, Cameron, Julia, Randy, Cody, Adriana, Leonhard, Florentina, Hunter, Katie, Dalton, Katie, Christian, Breanna, Christian, Tyler, Kayli and Christina.

Besides her husband John Patrick, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son William Glen Murray; a daughter, Patricia Marie Watland; a sister, Maria Crews; and a brother, Heinz Dlugos.

Funeral services will be held at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, Kansas, Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Todd Britt officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Riley Post Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., where friends may call until time of service.

Jane Richardson

AUGUSTA — Jane (Taylor) Richardson, 80, of Augusta, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 1, 1927, to Millard Victor and Ella May (York) Taylor in Junction City. She grew up in the Pearl community and graduated from Chapman High School.
She married Warren Earl Richardson on Sept. 16, 1950, in Enterprise. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, P.E.O. TOPS, Library Brown Baggers, Republican Woman, Outlook Club, served on the Augusta Housing Authority, volunteered at Robinson Elementary, for Meals on Wheels, the Bloodmobile and was an longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross Disaster Services.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Marcis of San Ramon, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Lee Richardson; and a brother, York Taylor.

Funeral services were Friday, June 20, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Relay for Life in care of Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, 201 E. Fifth, Augusta.

James A. Young

AUGUSTA — James A. Young, 89, died Friday, June 20, 2008, at the Enterprise Estates Nursing Home.

He was born Aug. 23, 1918, in the Vine Creek Community, the son of James Alexander and Louella Edith Pero Young.

He married Joan Ditsler. Most of their married life was spent in Longford. They moved to Abilene in 2000.

He had been employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, the Duckwall-ALCO Warehouse and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Mr. Young was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Jean of Abilene; one son, Jamie Young of Abilene; one daughter, Evelyn Johnson of Abilene; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008, from the Danner Funeral Home, Abilene, with the Rev. Gene Langhofer officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Meron Cemetery, north of Longford.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, Abilene.

Bernice A. Knopf

SALINA — Bernice Arlene Knopf, 92, of Salina, died Thursday, June 19, 2008.
She was born Bernice A. Shirack on Sep. 22, 1915, in Dickinson County. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Laverna Leach of Virginia Beach, Va. and Norma Provance of Abilene; two sons, Dale Knopf of Salina and Gerald Knopf of Gypsum; one sister, Ardis Londeen of Abilene; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Sam” Knopf, in 1985; three sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2008, at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Abilene. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Abilene.

Memorials may be made to Faith Free Will Baptist Church or the Hospice of Salina, in care of Roselawn Mortuary, 1307 S. Santa Fe, Salina, KS 67401.

Eleanora Runft

Eleanora Agatha Runft, 90, of Abilene, died Monday, June 23, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

She was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Havecock, Neb., the daughter of Fredrick and Christina (Dumbler) Reissig. She grew to womanhood in Herington, attended local schools and graduated in 1936 from Herington High School.

She married Lyle T. Runft on Dec. 21, 1936, in Herington. They made their home in Seattle, Wash., Wichita, New Orleans, La., and Everett, Wash., prior to retiring and moving to Abilene in 1982.

Mrs. Runft was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, Abilene.

Survivors include one daughter, Georgia J. Lowman of Fort Meyers, Fla., two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, on May 12, 1990, three brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the Abilene Cemetery. Pastor Justin Panzer will officiate.

Friends may call at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 N.W. Third, Abilene, until time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church, Abilene, and left at the funeral home.

James A. Young

Dennis Schubert

CHAPMAN — Dennis Wayne Schubert, 56, of Chapman, died Monday, June 23, 2008, at his home.

He was born March 5, 1952, in Leesville, La., the son of Thomas Francis and Flaudia Mae Moore Schubert. He attended grade school in Killeen, Texas, and graduated in 1974 from Killeen High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1974. After his discharge, he lived in various places and received several college associate degrees. He moved to Chapman in 2003.

He married Leslie Sue Williams on April 4, 2004, at their home in Chapman.

Mr. Schubert was owner and manager of Bar S Construction and managed 15 rental properties.

He was a member of the Chapman American Legion Post #240, the American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie, of the home; three sons, Stephen Michael Schubert and Junior Schubert, both of Chapman, Thomas Wayne Schubert of California; two stepsons, Ricky and Robbie Uselton of Ohio; one daughter, Amanda Dawn Schubert of Chapman; his parents, Thomas and Flaudia Schubert of Livingston, Texas; two sisters, Debbie Schubert of Bryan, Texas, and Jimmie Lou Dowden of Colorado; four brothers, Jimmy, Danny, Richard and Richard Dale Dowden; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Latisha Mae Schubert.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at St. Michael’s Parish Center, 216 E. Sixth Street, Chapman. Pastor Stan Norman will officiate. The Chapman American Legion, American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard will provide the funeral detail. The body will be cremated following the service.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the parish center.
Memorial contributions may be made to the D. Wayne Schubert Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.
