Janice Marie Effertz
1956 - 2008
Janice Marie Effertz, 51, of Great Bend, died Jan. 26 at her home. She was born Sept. 15, 1956, at Williston, N.D., the
daughter of Henry Louis and Sharon Joan Grisius Effertz. She was a caregiver for Sunflower Diversified Services. She
was a resident of Great Bend since 1990, coming from Wichita.
Survivors include her father, Henry Effertz, and wife Diane, of Great Bend; her mother, Sharon Servi of Littleton,
Colo.; three brothers, Steve Effertz and Douglas Effertz, both of Great Bend, and Anthony Effertz of Kansas City, Mo.;
a half brother, Jon Servi of Madison, Wis.; and a half sister, Jackie Zube of Littleton, Colo. She was preceded in death
by a son, Jason Effertz, an infant brother, Danny LeRoy Effertz, and an infant sister, Patty Jo Effertz.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place. Donations to a
memorial fund for the Golden Belt Humane Society may be made in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Joseph M. Lichter
1922 - 2008
CENTRALIA, Ill. — Joseph M. Lichter, 85, died Jan. 29 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, Ill. Born Dec. 23, 1922, in
Olmitz, he was the son of John Lichter and Lillian (Mauler) Lichter. He married Irene M. Sell on Feb. 20, 1950, in
Timken. A resident of Centralia for 35 years, he retired in 1982 after 36 years as a foreman with Natural Gas Pipeline
Company of America.
Mr. Lichter served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of
Columbus and American Legion Post No. 446.
Survivors include his wife, Irene M. Lichter of Centralia; a daughter, Carol Siesener and husband, Robert, of St. Louis,
Mo.; a brother, Alvin Lichter of Olmitz; two sisters, Rose Mary Linn of Albert and Mary Evelyn Linenberger of Great
Bend; three grandchildren, Stephen Siesener and wife Monica of St. Louis, Mo., Angela Wilhite and husband Daniel of
O’Fallon, Mo., and Amy Siesener of St. Louis, Mo.; and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Elizabeth, Logan and Daniel
Wilhite. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John R. Lichter and Henry Lichter.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary’s Church in Centralia, Ill., with Father Michael Mbonu
officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Centralia, Ill. Friends may visit after 9 a.m. on Saturday at St..
Mary’s Church. Military rites at the graveside will be accorded by the Centralia Veterans of Foreign Wars and
American Legion posts. Memorials in his honor may be made to St. Mary’s School in care of Garnier and Sons Funeral
Home.

Joe E. Hastings

CANON CITY, Colo. — Joe E. Hastings, 74, died Jan. 28 at St. Marys Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo. He
was born July 24, 1933, in Red Cloud, Neb., to Frederick L. Hastings and Nancy “Benton” Hastings. He married
Wilma M. Klusener on Oct. 23, 1955, at Dubuque. She preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1992. A former resident of
Hoisington and Jewell, he was a resident of Canon City, Colo., for the past 10 years. He was a retired City of
Hoisington employee, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Hastings was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.
7428 in Hoisington.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Hastings and wife Joyce of Canon City, Colo.; and two sisters, Violet Thompson of
Lawrence, and Elsie. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emery Hastings, and a sister, Rosenia Padgett.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with Pastor Amy Austin,
PMA, officiating. Burial will be at the Dubuque Lutheran Cemetery in Russell County with military graveside rites by
VFW Post No. 7428 and American Legion Post No. 286. Friends may visit from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to
service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Dubuque Lutheran Cemetery in care of
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

HOISINGTON — Mildred N. Johnston, 86, died Jan. 29 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born April 8,
1921, in Coffeyville, the daughter of Forest B. and Alta Mae “Mills” Manley. She married Alva G. Johnston on April
21, 1940, in Oswego. He died Jan. 9, 2001. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Assembly of God Church, Hoisington.
Survivors include a daughter, Maybell Smith, Rockford, Ill.; a brother, Gail Manley, Hoisington; three grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Delbert Manley, and a sister, Dixie B. Manley.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Dwight Dozier
officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, all at the funeral home. Memorial donations to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice may be made
in care of the funeral home.

1926 - 2008
LINCOLN — May Louise Judd, 81, died Jan. 28. Born May 23, 1926, in Lincoln, she was the daughter of Clinton and
Cora (Chard) Howard. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944. She married Lloyd Franklin Judd on Oct. 27,
1946, in Salina. She was a retired beautician.
She and her husband enjoyed many years of boating, camping and traveling with friends in their Winnebago clubs. She
will be remembered for the many hours she volunteered working with the church youth group as well as the AFS Club.
Among her favorite pastimes were drawing, painting and sewing.
May Louise was a charter member of Eta Tau chapter of ESA sorority. She belonged to the local chapter of PEO and to
the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin, of Lincoln; three daughters, Linda Bray of Great Bend, Connie Liggitt and
husband Del of Lincoln and Kelli DiMarino and husband Rocky of Oakland Park, Fla.; a brother, Larry D. Howard and
wife Pat of Emporia; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a
son-in-law, Steve Bray.
A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hall Chapel in Lincoln. Friends may visit from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the Lincoln Carnegie
Library or the Lincoln Art Center in her memory.

Wayne Leroy Kirkman

WICHITA — Wayne Leroy Kirkman, 75, died Jan. 25 at his residence in Wichita. Born March 20, 1932, in Great
Bend, he was the son of Leroy Kirkman and Hazel Evers. On Dec. 23, 1997, Wayne and Joy Kirkman were united in
marriage at Wichita. Together they celebrated 10 years of marriage.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Kirkman; a son, Michael Kirkman; two daughters, Kristie and husband Sheldon
Peacock and Kathy and Dave Herman; two stepdaughters, Kim Maples and Karma Lamping; a stepson, Kyle and Gail
Antenew; a sister, Wanda Hoberecht; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
No funeral services are planned. A memorial has been established in his loving memory with Hospice Care of Kansas.

WICHITA — William T. “Bill” Roat, 60, died Jan. 28 surrounded by his loved ones. Born Aug. 1, 1947, in New
Albany, he was the son of Gilford G. and Florence May (Russell) Roat. He was a 1965 graduate of Fredonia (Kansas)
High School. He was the manager of Bud Roat Towing Service and also worked at Safelite and various Bud Roat
service stations.
Survivors include three brothers, Jim and Doris of Great Bend, Bud and Lois of Wichita, and Butch and Karyn of
Edmond, Okla.; two sisters, May and Larry Joe Shinkle of Haysville and Marie and Garry Starmer of Fredonia;
adopted family, Billy, Heather, Dustin and Miah Konklin of Mulvane; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Culbertson Smith Mortuary, Wichita. Graveside service will be at 3:30
p.m. Friday at Weakley Cemetery in New Albany. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today with family present
