Virginia “Faye” Carpenter

LARNED — Virginia “Faye” Carpenter, 91, died Jan. 31 at Larned Health Care Center in Larned. Born July 7, 1916,
in Pawnee County, she was the daughter of Henry and Sara McClernon Bird. She attended Garfield Public Schools.
She married George Simmons on Nov. 11, 1937. He died on July 18, 1980. She married Howard Carpenter on Oct. 25,
1986. He survives. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, she was a retired activity therapist at Larned State Hospital.
She had traveled all 50 states and seven continents.
Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both of Larned.
Survivors include two daughters, Susann Cooksey of Littleton, Colo., and Elizabeth “Liz” Brickey of Arkansas City;
eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Simmons; a
brother, Harold Bird; two half brothers, Eldred and Cecil Bird; a sister, Grace Simmons; and a grandchild.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned with Father Bernard Felix as celebrant. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday, and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be sent to the Make a Wish Foundation or the donor’s choice, both in care of the mortuary.

Willie Jones, Jr.
1930 - 2008
Willie Jones, Jr., 77, of Great Bend, died Jan. 30 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 2,
1930, at Abilene, the son of Willie and Blanche Patterson Jones. He was a maintenance worker for Vernon Nuss and
Von Hampton. He was a resident of Great Bend most of his life.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, baptized into Christ Jan. 16, 1966, at Trinity Lutheran Church by Pastor
K.W. Behnken, and he served on the Altar Guild for 32 years, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Cleo Jones, Wichita; one daughter, Darlene Faye Jones, Wichita; one brother, Donald Jones,
Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sisters, Marcella James and Blanche Robinson, both of Great Bend. He was preceded in
death by a daughter, Diana Jones, eight brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. James A. Strasen
officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral
Home, Great Bend. Donations to a memorial fund for Trinity Lutheran Church may be made in care of the funeral
home.

Makinna Ann Krebaum, 2, Great Bend, died Jan. 31 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born Dec. 21, 2005.

Sharon K. Roach
1942 - 2008
Sharon K. Roach, 65, of Great Bend, died Jan. 30 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. Born Aug. 21, 1942,
at Garden City, she was the daughter of Emanuel and Evelyn Bruce Foos. A resident of Great Bend most of her life,
she was a homemaker, partner in farming operations and owned Country Corner Salon. She married Alan Maurice
Roach on Nov. 18, 1957, in Lyons. He died Oct. 15, 2006.
Mrs. Roach was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose and Altar Society.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Roach and Bradley A. Roach and wife T.J., all of Great Bend; a daughter, Cheryl
Keener and husband Tom of Great Bend; a brother, Larry Foos and wife Lorraine of Olympia, Wash.; two sisters,
Sandra Wilhelm and husband Wayne of Seward and Nancy Dunaway and husband Gary of Kilgore, Texas; five
grandchildren, Chris Keener, Kevin Keener, Sierra Jones, Sasha Kirksey and Tucker Roach; and three great-
grandchildren.
Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral
home. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Father Reginald A. Urban officiating.
Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sister Mary Eleanor Penka
1916 - 2008
Sister Mary Eleanor Penka, 91, of Great Bend, died Jan. 30 in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.
Born June 14, 1916, in Odin, as Dorothy Penka, Sister Mary Eleanor was the daughter of the late Emil and Hedwig
Heger Penka. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ community July 18, 1931, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 20,
1934. She celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 2004.
Sister Mary Eleanor spent most of her ministerial life as a religious in domestic capacities. Early in her religious life
she was a homemaker on the sisters’ missions. She worked in the kitchens of St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend (now
Central Kansas Medical Center), and St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City. Since 1952 she had lived and worked in
Great Bend, serving at St. Rose Hospital and later at CKMC as sacristan, supervisor of housekeeping, aide, ward clerk
and in Central Service. Before her last illness (1993) she worked in the medical center laundry and at the convent as a
seamstress.
Sister Mary Eleanor is survived by one brother and one sister: Julius, and Helen Kalina, both of Hoisington; and her
Community of Dominican Sisters.
Sister Eleanor’s body was brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great
Bend, at 4 p.m. Thursday, where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the
Rev. Marvin Reif presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection
Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be at the convent. Friends may call at the convent from 9 a.m. until 4:30
p.m. today. Memorials in honor of Sister Eleanor for the Dominican Sisters’ Retirement Fund may be sent to:

Sylvia L. Teichmann
1919 - 2008
HUDSON — Sylvia L. Teichmann, 88, of Hudson, died Feb. 1 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born June 11,
1919, at St. John, she was the daughter of Martin and Myrtle (Wood) Cooper. On Aug. 14, 1937, she married Walter R.
Teichmann at Harper. He preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 2005. A lifelong resident of Hudson, she was a homemaker
and a graduate of St. John High School.
She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ and the Church Guild, both of rural Hudson. On August 14, 1937,
she married Walter R. Teichmann at Harper. He preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 2005.
Survivors include: two sons, Galen R. Teichmann, Great Bend, and Barry B. Teichmann, Hudson; four grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Charles Edward Cooper,
and three sisters Fannie Stull, Jessie Conklin and Nellie Stotts.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peace United Church of Christ, rural Hudson, with Pastor Wade Russell
presiding. Burial will be in the Peace Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel,
St. John. Memorials may be given to the Peace United Church of Christ in care of Minnis Chapel, St. John.

Makinna Ann Krebaum

Makinna Ann Krebaum, 2, of Great Bend, died Jan. 31 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Born Dec. 21, 2005, at
Wichita, she was the daughter of Kyle and Tasha Ann Grossardt Krebaum. She was a lifetime Great Bend resident.
She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s. She was baptized on Nov. 25, 2006, at St. Patrick
Catholic Church, Great Bend.
Survivors include her parents, of the home; grandparents, Jim and Judy Krebaum of Great Bend and Roger and Connie
Grossardt of Claflin; great-grandparents, Evelyn Schartz of Ellinwood and Bertha Kuhn of Great Bend; aunts and
uncles, Kevin and Tammi Krebaum, Kansas City, Mo., Amber Grossardt and Heather Grossardt, both of Salina, and
Brandon Grossardt of Rochester, Minn.; and cousins Kade, Megan, Julianna, Devon and Hannah. She was preceded in
death by her great-grandparents, Raymond and Mable Krebaum, William Kuhn, Malvern Schartz and Walter and
Bernice Grossardt.
A vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m.
Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Reginald A. Urban officiant. Interment will be in the
Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the
Makinna Ann Hope Foundation (to benefit the special-needs children of Barton County).
Makinna was a very special little girl who touched the hearts of everyone she met. She brought much love and joy into
the world. Makinna was such a strong little girl and fought so courageously against all odds. We love you and we will
miss you forever.

Myrna Flora Miller
1940 - 2008
LARNED — Myrna Flora Miller, 67, died Feb. 1 at her Larned home. She was born Feb. 25, 1940, in Denver, Colo.,
the daughter of Clarence and Mabel Batman Thomas. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a retired ALCO’s store
clerk.
She was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Larned Bingo Club.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Dorland, Wichita; two daughters, Elizabeth Rauen, Larned, and Penny Fletcher, La
Monte, Mo.; a brother, Myron Thomas, Larned; one sister, Lanet Farmer, Larned; six grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandsons, Lance and Keith Dorland.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned, with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding.
Friends may sign a register from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral
home. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Larned VFW Bingo
Fund in care of Morell Funeral Home.
