BAZINE – Emma Schneider, 93, died
Nov. 22 at Naples, Fla. She was born
Nov. 19, 1914, in Sutton, Neb., the
daughter of John and Mary Schmidt
Bahm. In 1916 she moved with her
family to Alamota, Kan., where she grew
up. On Dec. 15, 1940, she married
Palmer Schneider and moved to Bazine.
He preceded her in death on Feb. 24,
1984.
Emma was a homemaker, she was an
active member of the United Methodist
Church and was also very active with the
Golden Years Senior Center in Bazine.
Survivors include one son, Duane
Schneider and wife Nancy, Jackson,
Wyo.; one daughter, Diane Stites and
husband Donald Miller, Naples, Fla.; one
brother, Reuben Bahm, Dighton; and two
grandchildren, Kristina Eklund and Dustin
Schneider, Chicago, Ill. She was
preceded in death by three brothers,
John (Johnny), Henry (Hank) and
Herman Bahm; and five sisters, Katie
Kuehn, Marie Schmalzried, Amelia
Neiman, Naomi Bauer and Barbara
Hinkle.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the United Methodist Church
in Bazine, with the Rev. Joel Maiorano
officiating. Burial will be in the Bazine
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. Monday at Fitzgerald Funeral
Home, Ness City, with the family present
to greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be sent to
the American Heart Association or the
Bazine Golden Years Senior Center, in
care of the funeral home.

Betty J. Shull
1923 - 2007
BUHLER – Betty J. Shull, 84, died Nov.
23 at Buhler Sunshine Home. She was
born Nov. 3, 1923, at Braman, Okla., the
daughter of Lorenzo Arthur and Elizabeth
Patton Sturm. She was a 1942 graduate
of Blackwell (Okla.) High School. She
married W.A. “Bill” Shull on Sept. 5,
1942, at Blackwell. He died Dec. 30,
1998. She was a retired custodian for
Great Bend Unified School District 428.
Mrs. Shull was a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church in Great Bend and the
Golden Belt Rockhound Society.
Survivors include a son, Kevin R. Shull
and wife Kim, Buhler; daughter-in-law
Linda Shull, Great Bend; 10
grandchildren and 14 great-
grandchildren, with three more on the
way. She was preceded in death by a
son, William R. Shull; brother, Ralph E.
Sturm; and three sisters, Verna Penick,
Verda Rumbaugh and Barbara
McClarnon.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m.
Tuesday at Blackwell Cemetery with Stan
Rumbaugh officiating. Friends may call
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Monday
at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson.
Memorials may be sent to the American
Diabetes Association in care of the
mortuary.

Ida Mae "Pinkie" Boyd
1919 - 2007
OMAHA, Neb. — Ida Mae “Pinkie” Boyd,
88, died Nov. 19 at her home in Omaha.
She was born April 12, 1919, at Flat
River, Mo., the daughter of Charles and
Alpha Lewis Giffard. She was married to
Melvin Boyd. She was a Great Bend
resident for more than 45 years, moving
to Omaha in 1990. She was a registered
nurse for St. Rose and the Great Bend
Manor, both of Great Bend. Words used
to describe her by those who knew were:
strength, courage, surprising wit, lover of
people and life.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara
Boyd, Omaha; two sons, Tom Boyd and
wife Kate of Houston, Texas, and John
Boyd of Omaha; one sister, Caroline
Beard of Austin, Texas; five
grandchildren, Byron, Pearl and Rose of
Omaha and Alex and Michael of Houston;
and one great-grandchild, Annie Boyd of
Omaha. Ida was preceded in death by
her husband and a son, Melvin Boyd Jr.
A memorial graveside service will be at
11 a.m. Friday in the Great Bend
Cemetery, Great Bend, with Pastor
Chuck Marshall officiating. Inurnment will
take place. There will be no visitation, as
cremation has taken place.

Leland J. Luther
1923 - 2007
Leland J. Luther, 84, of Great Bend, died
Nov. 20 at Hutchinson Hospital,
Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 18, 1923,
in rural Edwards County, the son of
Dillard J. and Gertrude Miller Luther. He
married Shirley M. Campbell on April 8,
1948, at Great Bend. She survives. He
worked as an oilfield production
supervisor for Campbell Drilling and
Production Company. He later operated a
motel in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and
operated an exotic animal farm. He was
a lifetime resident of Great Bend.
He was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church, Great Bend.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the
home, include his beloved baby camel,
Holly, of the home, and five nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by
three brothers, Dillard Luther, Lowell
Luther and Warren Luther, and a sister,
Bonnie Crawford.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m.
Saturday at First Presbyterian Church,
Great Bend, with the Rev. Hal Staats
officiating. Interment will be at the Great
Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9
a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with the family
present from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at Bryant
Funeral Home, Great Bend. Donations to
memorial funds for the Barton County
Humane Society or Barton County Relay
for Life may be made in care of the
funeral home.

Kenneth Marvin Drake
1919 - 2007
Kenneth Marvin Drake, 88, of Great
Bend, died at his home Nov. 21. He was
born Oct. 29, 1919, in Quincey, to Ernest
and Anna Bones Drake. He received his
education in Quincey and married Arlene
Riebel on Nov. 18, 1947. They made
their home in Great Bend. Kenneth
worked for Peters Drilling for 30 years.
He was a life member of the VFW,
American Legion, and a member of the
Elks Lodge for 38 years.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene, of
Great Bend; two sons, Robert Drake of
Great Bend and Wayne Drake of
Lawrence; a daughter, Janice Rosenholtz
of Overland Park; a sister, Geraldine
Smith of El Dorado; eight grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren.
Viewing and visitation will be from 4 to 8
p.m. Sunday. The family will receive
friends at 6:30 p.m. followed by a vigil
service at 7 p.m., all at Charter Funerals,
Great Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated by Father Wesley
Schawe at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick
Catholic Church, Great Bend. Interment
will follow at the Great Bend Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Catholic
Youth Group and Masses.

Sylvia J. Weltmer
1915 - 2007
Sylvia J. Weltmer, 91, of Great Bend,
died Nov. 20 at Great Bend Health and
Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec.
14, 1915, at Wilsey, the daughter of
Frank and Virginia Ice Platz. She married
John Weltmer on Oct. 20, 1935, at Great
Bend. He died on Aug. 14, 1980. She
was a secretary for Weltmer Plumbing,
Inc. She was a resident of Great Bend
most of her life.
She was a member of the First
Congregational United Church of Christ,
Great Bend.
Survivors include her son, Prentice
Weltmer and wife Carol, Great Bend; a
daughter, Kathleen Weltmer, Great
Bend; five grandchildren, Lori Feck and
husband Monty of Winfield, Janel Unrein
and husband Chris of Wichita, Wayne
Gregg and wife Rosie of Madison, Ala.,
Bonnie Chaney and husband Sid of Baton
Rouge, La., and Connie Ogden and
husband Richard of Ellinwood; and seven
great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by nine brothers and four
sisters.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m.
Friday in Great Bend Cemetery with the
Rev. Diana Coberly officiating. Visitation
will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today, 3 to 7
p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday
all at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.

Jeannetta L. "Jan" Cornwell
1941 - 2007
HOISINGTON — Jeannetta L. “Jan”
Cornwell, 66, died Nov. 20 at Clara
Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was
born Feb. 26, 1941, at Meade, the
daughter of Milton Karl and Hildred
(McGinity) Harris. Jeannetta Louise
Harris married James Monroe Cornwell,
Sr., on June 14, 1958, in Kiowa. He
survives. She was the director of
Hoisington Emergency Medical Service,
taught CPR classes in the community and
was a nurse aide at Hoisington Lutheran
Hospital. She was a resident of
Hoisington for 49 years.
She was a member of Concordia
Lutheran Church, Hoisington, the VFW
Auxiliary, Hoisington, a food bank
volunteer and an American Red Cross
member.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, of
the home, include two sons, James “Bo”
Cornwell Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Findley,
Ohio, and Brett M. Cornwell and his
companion Kathy of Mt. Vernon, Ohio;
two daughters, Terri Szendrodi and her
companion Martin Wohlford of Copperas
Cove, Texas, and Sherri Jackson and her
husband Danny of Hill City; one brother,
Billy J. Harris of Temple, Texas; two
sisters, Glenda F. McNutt of Borger,
Texas, and Rhonda G. Harris of Amarillo,
Texas; and 13 grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a sister, Hazel
Harris.
A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home,
Hoisington. Funeral service will be at
10:30 a.m. Saturday at Concordia
Lutheran Church, Hoisington, with the
Rev. Mark Lovett officiating. Burial will be
at Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa. Visitation
will be from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday,
with the family receiving friends from
6:30 to 8 p.m., all at the funeral home,
and from 9 a.m. until service time
Saturday at the church. Memorial
donations for the Hoisington Ambulance
Service may be made in care of the
